00:55And I feel like it's getting so much worse
00:57That's how detectives have described a T-side man

01:02After meeting them on dating apps

01:10And sexually assaulting eight of those women
01:12There are rapes, murders, kidnappings
01:17I was dealing with the worst of the worst
01:20I've seen things you can never unsee
01:24This is where Tinder started

01:50This is where we came up with the concepts for Tinder
01:53Every once in a while, lightning strikes
01:55And it's struck here

02:03At that time, we were looking to disrupt things
02:06By going sort of the mobile route
02:08And one of the things that we had noticed
02:10Was that there really isn't a predominant dating app
02:14That basically everything had been web-based
02:17And it was also simultaneously something
02:20That young people had never really adopted
02:23And so we saw this as an opportunity
02:26And we essentially went to where the young people were
02:30Which is on their phone
02:32You know, we launched on August 2nd, 2012
02:35Basically, friends and family were on there
02:38It was not a lot of people
02:41There was no go-to-market campaign
02:44It was just about, let's make this cool thing
02:47And put it out there
02:48Period of the sentence
02:51It didn't have a lot of growth
02:54It was just sort of sat there for a little bit
02:56Like, no one wanted to admit
02:58I was on a dating service
02:59Because it's like you had somehow failed in life
03:01That you needed some service to help you find a mate
03:04We were seriously like pondering
03:07Of like, how are we going to like ramp up Tinder
03:10The very first version of Tinder
03:14Didn't actually have the swipe
03:16It had the part and the X buttons
03:18In the back of my head
03:20I don't know, for weeks or months
03:22I was kind of iterating
03:23Trying to solve various issues
03:25It was where I thought it needed to be used one-handed
03:27On the move
03:28One morning, I woke up with an epiphany of how I would do that
03:36You would have a stack of cards
03:42You would swipe in one direction to put them into the right pile
03:46Or in the other direction for the wrong pile
03:50And so that's really where the swipe was born
03:52One night, when I was fixing some bugs
03:54I went ahead and turns out I was able to add swiping capabilities within a few hours
03:59And I'm not sure if I even told everybody that it was in there
04:02It was never really meant to be some sort of big key differentiator
04:07We didn't tell anybody about it
04:08The magic of it was that it was dating
04:12Made mobile in your hands
04:14The swipe just kept you going
04:16That was the thing that like
04:17Kept our time on site numbers like super duper high
04:20At that point, the marketing really started
04:24That's where we were going out to colleges
04:27Like our first real college marketing
04:30Was at University of Southern California
04:32USC in LA
04:33It's not just a run-of-the-mill state school
04:36It's like a prestigious school
04:38Basically bust in all of these
04:42Sort of who's who, I guess
04:44Of the USC college campus
04:47For this pool party
04:49And require users to have Tinder on their phone
04:53No one had really done college marketing
04:56The way we had it before
04:57We're talking about Tinder
04:59What do you know about Tinder?
05:01It's a dating app
05:02I think people use it to like meet new people
05:05And like hook up or whatever
05:07They launched Tinder by spreading the word among college students
05:10At so-called party schools
05:12I hate to reduce it like this
05:13But it was like basically throwing parties for cool kids
05:16It was pretty exciting
05:19But it was really January 2013
05:21Right after holiday break
05:23That's where things start to blow up
05:26One app that's causing quite the stir on campus is called Tinder
05:29I downloaded a little app that could call Tinder onto my iPhone
05:33A.K.A. the phone
05:34A.K.A. the great Swagoo phone magnificent
05:37Oh my gosh, I just got a message on Tinder
05:40Liking someone on the app is completely anonymous
05:44Unless they like you back
05:45Then it's a match made in Tinder heaven
05:49It's just like ready willing audience
05:52Who is just going to like take this in as their own and adopt it
05:56And then turn around and spread it just to all of their friends
05:59The same company which produced match.com
06:03Created Tinder back in October
06:04It was created to remove the creepiness of online dating for college age students
06:08It was piloted on several college campuses with progressive results
06:12Within the first two months
06:13Tinder served over 1 million matches
06:15Early on seeding it with that targeted, small, fun, like, excited user base
06:23Um, was, it was like, like fishing in a barrel, man
06:27Like, uh, it was just the right thing at the right time for the right people
06:31And they took it and they went crazy

06:52That was, I think, when we knew we really had something

07:08It has attracted more than a million UK visitors in the last 60 days alone
07:13Many of us are spending the day swiping left and swiping right

07:19When I first signed up to Tinder
07:22I was hoping that I would find someone that I would be with forever
07:29So my first time on Tinder, I actually got 200 matches

08:14We were all acutely aware of match
08:17We were kind of, like, the upstart misfits
08:20Going about it in our own way
08:22And match, on the other hand, was very much, like, an established company
08:26I don't even think they understood what they had in Tinder at the time

20:25Who was just so desperate
20:26To be liked
20:28And to be wanted
20:29That was the addiction
20:31And the app was the tool

20:33To fuel that addiction

20:39Is addictive
20:40You know, in itself
20:43It's unfortunate
20:45When somebody isn't able
20:46To manage an addiction
20:49But the same thing
20:51That makes it addictive

22:46Being racially ambiguous
22:48A lot of guys
22:50I'm like

22:51Or do you want to deport me?
22:53You should really go to a school
22:54Or have a module
22:55To know how to deal with dating apps
22:58Because even as a 30-something

23:01I was sort of taken aback

23:03I'd have messages

23:19To grow as a brand

23:37If it weren't for Tinder
23:39As we grew
23:41And we got bigger
