00:19who's making these purchases escalates to murder
00:24there's somebody blew my brother the vicious bombing sets off a lengthy investigation
00:34we did an undercover operation could she be involved in a love affair
00:39and an international manhunt they couldn't find him where was he
00:44that all lead back to a narcissistic sexual con artist a killer relationship it shattered my world
00:53good looks good money and good personality marcus tony has all three in spades with an accountant
01:16for mom marcus learns the value of a dollar early on by his early 30s he already owns
01:23several income properties but his world is turned upside down when all of a sudden his stellar
01:30credit score plummets and his bank accounts are drained someone is stealing his money
01:36his identity and eventually his life
01:40chicago emergency death was blown in the house i need emergency right away
01:59on the 15th of february just before 11 o'clock at night calls for the fire department and police
02:06department were ringing off the hook there seems to be like an explosion or a house on fire
02:11everyone's saying they heard an explosion
02:13that house just blew up it's that fire it blew up
02:17concerned neighbors they see the windows are blown out
02:21they didn't know what it was
02:22it could be something accidental it could be a natural gas explosion fireworks a stove blowing up
02:32could be anything
02:33i'm in the fire department overhead now there's people in here smoking i can't get in
02:38okay we got the fire department on the way
02:39first responders find 31 year old alfonzo butler outside with serious burns to both legs
02:50and almost complete hearing loss as he's loaded into the ambulance alfonzo tells firefighters his
02:57best friend mark is still inside the house we did have a uh explosion five million bomb
03:04and then the fire chief himself went in there with one of his firemen
03:11and they surveilled the area found blood
03:17and then they saw the body its head against the wall and the arm was missing
03:23and the fire chief saw that he recognized as a piece of pipe with two ends on it just laying there
03:39he knew it was something dangerous this was no accidental gas explosion there's a pipe
03:46bomb coming out there was another unexploded bomb there too
04:00these were large pipe bombs foot long two inches in diameter galvanized steel
04:07so they called chicago bombing arson to come there the technician was able to render that device safe
04:17with the scene now cleared of any other explosive devices the investigators can safely begin to search
04:23for evidence to understand how and why a bomb detonated in the house the detectives they recover
04:32identification off the deceased so they were confident on a positive identification of the victim
04:39his name is marcus tony
04:47born on january 20th 1963 in chicago illinois marcus is the eldest of three children in the tony family
04:56we grew up on the south side of chicago in the gresham chatham area although his name is marcus we called him
05:04mark he was a great big brother you know he took care of his sisters he always held our hands when
05:10we crossed the street we had fun growing up we were economically okay my mother's a certified public
05:17accountant after high school mark gets a job as a custodian at city colleges of chicago while keeping
05:25his sights set on bigger things marcus was very very frugal if he did have some extra money he would
05:34always save it mark was a hard worker and paid his bills kept his credit good so that he could start
05:41investing in real estate mark bets on himself and it pays off by 31 he owns several properties has a
05:49secure job a close family and loads of friends he's also popular with the ladies my brother always had
05:57a bunch of girlfriends but when he met lisa he just fell in love she was older she had her own place
06:07you know had settled into her career lisa was a play by the rules corporate gal in chicago she worked
06:15at the local phone company in management and human resources my brother was very jovial he was nice
06:25lisa felt that she had got her a gem next thing i know we're having a wedding reception
06:32mark and lisa marry in 1993 soon after they buy a beautiful new home in the south chicago suburb of
06:41dalton the marriage was loving they used to hold hands they used to laugh all the time and they were
06:49like the it couple in the first three four years it was good but then my brother started showing up to
06:56my house he wouldn't go straight home like many marriages mark and lisa had their ups and downs
07:03things started to fray a bit mark still enjoyed the fun times of hanging out with the fellas and i
07:12think lisa was feeling a bit of the strain having a younger husband at a certain point tensions were high
07:19enough that mark decided to move out and give them a separation my brother just got up and left and
07:27moved into one of his income properties he didn't tell me every detail that was going on between them
07:34prior to him moving out of the house through the fall of 1999 mark and lisa live apart but they stay in
07:42touch and see each other from time to time he was under the impression they were going to work it out
07:49but as autumn turns to winter lisa's prolonging their trial separation mark suspects she's become
07:56involved with another man mark thought lisa was stepping out on him possibly having an affair but he
08:04didn't have any proof i said lisa having an affair i was in disbelief and i'm like what that's the first
08:13time i had ever heard him say anything negative about it now with 37 year old mark tony dead and his 31
08:23year old friend alfonso butler in a hospital in serious condition the detectives will have to let the crime
08:30scene do the talking in this case i was assigned as a homicide detective we called in the atf brought
08:39everybody together formed a team you start forming theories of what was going on of course one of the
08:46theories is that these guys were making a bomb and it went off pipe bombs are not stable but it's not
08:52unusual for pipe bombs to explode unexpectedly since pipe bombs can be built with materials from a hardware
08:59store this could be the work of amateurs the first thing we do is a walkthrough taking in the entire
09:07scene there's a hole in the floor coming through the ceiling of the basement i could see where the
09:15victim ended up he was thrown into a wall and it was with such force that the plaster was knocked off
09:23that tells me these guys were in close proximity to this bomb when it went off walking through the
09:29basement and i'm looking for all that stuff that tells me construction of the bomb occurred in the
09:34house pieces of wire powder that's left behind i wasn't seeing any of that but upstairs as we examine
09:42the scene there was a large amount of packing popcorn and i saw gift wrap paper laying around i saw shreds
09:49of cardboard box things that just screamed out package package delivery and then inside mark's bedroom
09:58i found a fedex label the fedex label was addressed to marcus tony and it looks like it was new it's
10:06obviously something that he recently got it was important to him because he laid it on his dresser
10:12all of this tells me that the bomb in this case was a package that was delivered now there's a suspicion
10:20that this was an intentional bombing and there was a crime that had been committed
10:24it was pretty clear that marcus and alfonzo had nothing to do with building this bomb
10:32now did the person that delivered the bomb make the bomb was it somebody paid to drop off that bomb
10:37this was definitely made by someone who wanted somebody dead
10:47he started getting phone calls from creditors numerous credit cards had been opened in his name
10:54and charges run up someone's stolen his identity tony was receiving threats
10:59you lisa it's about me listening to it it's eerie he's a dangerous person and we needed to get him
11:06in custody they couldn't find him where was he he had disappeared
11:18residents of a quiet chicago neighborhood are reeling after a bomb kills homeowner mark tony
11:24and severely injured his best friend alfonzo butler while alfonzo remains in the hospital in serious
11:30condition detectives have to act quickly and notify mark's family of his death before the local news
11:37gets hold of the story but in south chicago word travels fast my phone started ringing
11:47rita something happened to your brother what you mean something happened to my brother somebody said my
11:55brother was killed in a bomb to deal with that i lost it i'm sorry
12:10by the time the detectives locate his estranged wife lisa family and friends are beginning to process
12:17the shocking news lisa mark's widow she had to be notified i was in the morning i went to her
12:26parents house so lisa was there i checked out her demeanor she didn't seem too upset she didn't appear
12:35to be in shock i've seen people in shock i would think she'd be different although i've seen a lot of
12:40stuff and i asked her what was going on with her husband was anybody after him she just said i don't know
12:54the team examines the label agent widow found inside mark's house they suspect the bomb had been
13:01shipped to him we learned through witness interviews that mark told a lot of people
13:07that he received a gift and it was left on his doorstep it turns out that this package was delivered
13:15days before and marcus did not open it so we decided we got to get postal investigators in on this case
13:25investigators went to work trying to trace back how this package arrived at mark's house
13:30the address it came from was an address in chicago which does not existent the label is a dead end and
13:39there's no leads from lisa so the investigators turned to the other physical evidence for clues to the
13:46bomb's origin after we recovered all the componentry and after it's all been fingerprinted and photographed
13:53you start putting the pieces of the puzzle together we have switches that came from a pull chain fan
14:01wires from model rocket igniters fragmentation from the pipe the power source and we're able to
14:11reconstruct the device and then on top of that we have burnt bits of wrapping paper and we deduce that
14:19the device was inside a box and it was gift wrapped the person's making the bomb they connect the top
14:26and the bottom of the box to these pull chains so when you pull open either the top flap or the bottom
14:31flap it would trigger the device
14:37the autopsy showed that marcus died from one of the end caps of the pipe bomb going right through his heart
14:44he also suffered some additional injuries to his arms and legs from the fragmentation of the galvanized
14:55pipe i had to go to the morgue to identify his body and he was dismembered
15:05and somebody that you grew up in the house with that you went to sleep away camp with you know my brother
15:11was my friend since the package was addressed to mark and delivered to his door the investigators have
15:23reason to believe he was the intended target so they look into his life and find a potential lead in his
15:29financial records for over a year mark got warning signs that something was happening with his credit
15:43numerous credit cards had been opened in his name and charges run up for hotel rooms trips travel he
15:51started getting phone calls from creditors saying you didn't pay your bill you're like i don't have a
15:59bill oh yes you do that went on for at least about three weeks non-stop soon after that somebody in
16:08detroit was using his name to get credit and then purchased vehicles and gotten uh cash off the credit cards
16:18the credit cards someone's stolen his identity keep in mind he'd have moved out of the house that
16:25him and lisa was living in so the credit cards were still coming to the home address my brother would
16:31call lisa like did you fill out a card a credit card application
16:36mark was trying to take matters into his own hands by calling credit agencies the credit card companies
16:43going to go to an attorney looking for answers it was all very confusing and chaotic with the bills
16:50adding up to more than two hundred thousand dollars mark starts to unravel he was paranoid times infinity
16:58times infinity paranoid mark kept saying stuff like i know my wife is having an affair and this man's
17:07messing with my credit cards and my checking account so i called lisa she says re you know mark is crazy
17:16why would i do that i make more money than he did so she was telling me that he's delusional he's making
17:22it up who's telling the truth with alfonzo butler finally in stable condition detective moss heads to
17:32the hospital to speak with him as the only other person in the room when the bomb exploded alfonzo may
17:38have answers as to who wanted mark dead his legs were covered with bandages naturally he was in pain
17:46but he did say that he was having trouble hearing i said are you able to talk to me tell me what happened
17:52and the interview commenced from there alfonzo told detectives that on february 7th 2000 mark came home
18:03to find the box sitting on his porch and he thought i didn't order anything i don't know what this is
18:16shortly after the package arrived mark peeled back some of the gift wrapping to discover a box
18:22for a brand new video cassette recorder but mark hesitates to open the gift any further
18:31the night after valentine's day mark invites his friend alfonzo to come over and hang out
18:38and they're sitting around having a couple beers mark is clearly upset mark thought lisa was possibly
18:47having an affair but he didn't have any proof and then this box it had been sitting in the house for
18:54more than a week tormenting him alfonzo told me mark was afraid this vcr had a tape in there of her new lover
19:07having sex with his wife what is in the box do i dare find out what's in there can i handle
19:20the truth if i find out what's in that box
19:32after speaking with the sole survivor of the bombing that killed mark tony the detectives follow up on
19:38mark's suspicions that his wife lisa was having an affair and that her lover was the mastermind behind
19:44his financial ruin to sift fact from fiction they bring lisa to the station for an interview
19:53she was charming she was dressed very well and i could see she was kind of nervous
20:00i asked her what was going on with her husband we heard that you had a boyfriend then she went on and
20:06saying we broke up and we're done can you call him up his phone is disconnected she told me that she
20:14hadn't talked to him in a long time she said he's a salesman from michigan so he moves around and i said
20:23how do you not know this guy's name lisa didn't tell detectives anything or give up a name
20:30or details about her lover he was just some guy i could see she wasn't telling me the truth i said are
20:37you hiding this gentleman we just want to talk to him i knew i had to press a little bit harder on her
20:43we had polaroids of the scene
20:48and i put them out on the table in front of her
20:50they showed her mark's dismembered body at the crime scene and she vomited immediately
21:03at that point she broke down i don't know his real name i called shanky she didn't know the last name
21:10so we called shanky's numbers off of lisa's phone all disconnected the police are baffled by lisa's
21:18lack of information on her ex-lover no one in mark's family or circle of friends knows this man's name
21:24either as alfonso begins the long road to recovery the team starts the heavy lifting of searching
21:31criminal records for the name shanky in the hopes that this moniker is actually lisa's lover's real name
21:40just when you think you're not getting anywhere some little bit of information comes through
21:45and the case starts rolling this is inspector fred lorenzana with the postal inspection service
21:51i'm downloading a phone message from victim marcus b tony's cell phone there were saved voicemails
21:59on the victim's phone marcus's phone he had been receiving threatening telephone calls hello market
22:06uh i understand you're trying to cause some kind of trauma over uh your credit report i don't think
22:12that would be actually wise considering i know you like i know the palm of my hand you lisa it's about
22:20me and i've been controlling this situation for quite some time yeah your wife was stupid enough to let
22:24me in the house and you know steal all your these growling voice messages were very scary and very weird
22:32i gave you an opportunity to finally talk to me and you let your voice spell pick up you just lost
22:37your last opportunity my friend and on february 15th 2000 another voice message why don't you just open
22:46up your little gift and uh you know take a look at what i said this is by far not over and your little
22:51bitch ass is gonna run we're listening to it it's eerie this is the perpetrator this is the guy we're
22:57going after now we've got to find out who this guy is the investigators are sure that the man who left
23:03mark the menacing voicemails and sent him the package bomb are one and the same but they don't
23:09have proof or even the identity of the suspect luckily investigators get hits on the name cienki
23:17and one man in particular gets their attention his name was shanky not a man he was in prison a few
23:25times this marcus tony identity theft and credit card fraud matched up with cienki lalaman lalaman was
23:33a con man he had been a prior federal felon the team learns that in 1992 lalaman was locked up on
23:42extortion charges and served 18 months in a federal prison when he got out of prison he would meet women
23:50who worked in the banks medical facilities people who knew other people's social security numbers
23:58dates of birth full names and cienki would seduce these women and start getting data and he would
24:06take on these new identities in 1995 lalaman was arrested for attempting to withdraw money with a
24:13stolen identity he spent another year behind bars after his release parole records show he moved home to
24:21chicago in 1998 cienki is 29 years old good looking guy athletic confident the time he's living in his
24:32parents basement in the south suburbs of chicago right across the street from lisa and mark tony's house
24:40cienki saw his next target and it was lisa this is a chance to make money lisa could be an innocent
24:51person being conned by him lalaman did have a history of taking advantage of women he has blackmailed
25:01people to get their money he has assumed their identity to steal their money but how does it go from
25:07that to blowing somebody up with a bomb this is so out of character cienki lalaman has no history of
25:14violence the investigators need to somehow connect him to the bomb we knew that the package was gift
25:21wrapped so we recovered tiny bits of that wrapping paper we put it together where we can get the pattern
25:30we start calling every gift wrap manufacturing company to try and determine where did it go
25:38who sold it we started going to each department store i checked marshall fields and i went in there
25:46i said have you ever seen this pattern and she looked at that photocopy and she goes oh sure that's
25:52colorful circles and i said oh because we're looking for somebody brought a package in here to be wrapped
25:59in this here's a picture you ever seen me like that oh sure that gentleman i recognize him
26:06real nice man neatly dressed and he gave me a tip for wrapping to package he had no problem taking this
26:14box with two pipe bombs in it to a department store to be gift wrapped the chase is on we need to find this guy
26:29on a chilly winter day in late february thousands of mourners gather in south chicago to celebrate the
26:39vibrant and joyful mark tony whose life was cut short by a shocking act of violence
26:46it was over 2 000 people at my brother's funeral all our friends and family lisa's family all his
26:58co-workers they came from out of state from everywhere everybody came to the funeral it was really really
27:04hard somebody's part of your life and you used to being with them and communicating with them every day
27:11so that trauma affected me my body was in shock my mind was in shock it shattered my world
27:22as rita and her family mourn their loss the multi-agency task force pulls out
27:27all the stops to track down the dangerous felon who killed mark we flooded the entire country
27:35what wanted posters of sianki lalaman it has his picture it's got his aliases it's got warnings that
27:42he's armed and dangerous the lalaman family lives right across the street from lisa's house we
27:51interviewed them too we asked have you seen sianki oh we haven't heard from him in months and they
27:57didn't know anything about him with lisa across the street the investigators question lalaman's network of
28:03shady acquaintances and ex-cons once the word got out that we're looking for him his network starts
28:11telling us about him after the bombing he went to detroit and we ran into one person that says he left
28:18three days ago but he did mention a girlfriend in cleveland we show up at the girlfriend's house
28:25we missed him after he went to cleveland he flew to canada
28:29from canada we didn't know where he was for a while he has different identities it's the worst nightmare
28:37for trying to find somebody they couldn't find him where was he he had disappeared
28:43the investigators also keep tabs on lisa they're not yet sure whether she's just another hapless
28:49victim of lalaman's cons or if she was actually involved in mark's murder the answers lie with
28:57seeing gilalaman and so their focus remains hunting the fugitive and then he made the mistake of
29:03reaching out to check in with a friend of his on the computer and he sent a picture and it was him in
29:10jamaica and that's where we went to find him unfortunately we were late he was gone and that's where we lost him
29:19through the early spring lalaman's trail goes cold the investigators continue working other angles
29:28without a history of explosives they are convinced lalaman had help but from who
29:35atf in detroit came up with an informant and one of the things he told us was that sienki and lisa used
29:43to go to detroit regularly and that opened up new avenues to try and figure out where this bomb
29:49came from the confidential informant tells atf agents to look into a 21 year old named jason booker
29:59jason's been in jail before he was a counterfeiter and he went to jail for a while
30:05and also as a teenager he was arrested for building pipe bombs
30:11during jason's prison time he met someone who was a mutual friend of sienki lalaman's
30:20so then we started dissecting jason's life and going through his financials and since he had gotten
30:26out of prison jason used his credit card to purchase the same componentry as the bomb purchased the pipes
30:34he purchased the rocker motors they were used as igniters he purchased the ceiling fan switch
30:40the evidence suggests jason bought components to make pipe bombs
30:44but that isn't proof that they were purchased for the device that killed mark tony
30:50in late spring 2000 the team initiates an undercover operation
30:55the confidential informant apparently had a report with jason and they wired him up detectives sent in
31:06that confidential informant wearing a wire and got to speaking with jason about pipe bombing death
31:14of mark tony during that conversation jason said the magic words of i made that bomb
31:22he could hear on tape that jason's pulling the chain of a fan and he says this is what i used
31:30immediately got an arrest warrant for him for building a weapon of mass destruction and using
31:35explosive device to commit murder and i arrested jason booker and normally when you arrest somebody
31:42you try and interrogate him but we had jason cold i told him to get an attorney and made it clear that
31:51we were going to prosecute him for bombing murder unless he cooperated he's facing the death penalty
31:58and jason's attorney said do not hold back tell them everything
32:04the investigators tracking the dangerous fugitive sianki lalaman now have his 21 year old accomplice
32:22in custody with a mountain of evidence tying jason booker to the explosive weapon
32:28that killed mark tony the young bomb maker is in serious trouble our case was strong jason could have
32:37got the death penalty for it and his lawyer very quickly encouraged him to tell us the truth
32:44he sees the writing on the wall somebody died from his handiwork
32:49and he decided to come clean jason tells the investigators that in early january 2000
32:58sianki lalaman approached him to build a pipe bomb he says oh i can do that he agreed jason bought
33:06all the components for the bomb and he gave them to sianki sianki drove back to chicago and in lisa's
33:14kitchen assembled the bomb while talking to jason on the phone jason told us everything told us
33:20exactly about that phone call and of course to verify it we have a phone record of him calling jason
33:27and sianki being in dalton illinois if the bomb was assembled in lisa's kitchen did she know about it
33:35jason tells the team she was not at home that day he continues to be forthcoming with more useful
33:42information one of the things he told us was that sianki checks in with him once in a while
33:49by computer now jason was locked up he couldn't have a computer i became jason they needed him to draw
33:58out sianki who was still a fugitive of justice i have no idea where he was all i have is an email
34:05address but jason would tell me what to write i would write it press send and for a week nothing
34:13happened two weeks nothing happened no response
34:20after nearly four weeks sianki finally replies the response came back sianki writes sorry i haven't been
34:29in touch bro i've been not feeling well and that's all it was but that was enough we got a response
34:36and then we ended up getting that ip address our computer expert at atf told us exactly where that
34:42other computer was the email originates from a computer inside a los angeles residence belonging to
34:49a woman named sandra lavelle sandra lavelle was a 50-something accountant who worked at the tv show cops
34:58she was a divorcee living in los angeles much like lisa a straightforward professional woman in midlife
35:05could lalaman have found a new target in sandra lavelle if so it's only a matter of time before
35:11she finds out he's a fugitive and her life could be in danger the authorities need to act fast
35:19the chicago investigators sent a local team from l.a to go surveil sandra's house looking for sianki
35:26and these marshals ate up they sat on the house they see a tall man exit the house
35:34they radio back to chicago we see a guy but he doesn't look like your guy
35:39i do want to take a chance and i said it's him grab him he was placed in custody
35:49and he admitted he is sianki lalamont
35:54we got him when i interviewed him in the la county jail he did look different he looked like sianki
36:02but he just looked different he looked like he put some weight on or something different in his face
36:06it came to be known that sianki had plastic surgery he had cheek implants and rhinoplasty so he had a new
36:15nose and new cheeks his new girlfriend paid for that whose house he was staying at
36:22so now i'm face to face with him and what was on my mind was how does it go from identity theft
36:29to murder that's a big jump he looked in the eye and said you know it's about the alpha and the omega
36:42i'm like what does that mean and that was it no other comments
36:51charged with capital murder sianki lalaman returns to chicago to stand trial the prosecutor's office
36:58announces it is seeking the death penalty in the murder of mark tony
37:05his lawyers asked if there's any way of getting out from under the death penalty
37:10so we decided that well if he gave us information about what actually happened truthfully and he pled
37:17guilty that we would get to a plea agreement with him he has to tell us everything about the case and
