00:00It's almost like a little dollhouse.
00:02Caitlin dreams of a house in the Chicago area
00:04that's tiny and a little precious.
00:06The secret room.
00:07Wow.
00:08There's just one thing standing in her way,
00:10her husband, Kyle.
00:12Oh my gosh, look at this place.
00:15He wants a literal Tudor castle.
00:18This house is a fairy tale driving in.
00:20We can throw the grand ball of Barrington in this house.
00:24And since he works from home, he wants turnkey.
00:27Too bad for him, he's married to an interior designer
00:30who wants to rip apart everything they see.
00:33It's definitely a full gut.
00:35This would be a full gut.
00:37Oh, wow.
00:37This is like a dungeon.
00:39Would this work for?
00:40Not to burst your bubble, this is also another full gut.
00:45Oh my.
00:57Hey there.
01:03How are you?
01:04I'm good.
01:05How was the train ride?
01:07You know, it was hot out there to walk,
01:08but it's so nice to be able to walk five minutes.
01:11I'm Caitlin.
01:12I'm an interior designer.
01:13I'm Kyle.
01:13I work in tech sales.
01:15And we're currently living at my parents' house
01:17in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
01:19Looks like we have the house to ourselves.
01:21Kyle and I met in high school.
01:23We strictly were just friends.
01:24Kyle was in a band, and I would go to his shows.
01:28Caitlin was kind of more edgy.
01:31She had a lot of piercings, kind of more of the goth look.
01:35Purple hair.
01:36I thought Kyle was a little too clean cut for me.
01:40We've been married for eight and a half years now.
01:44Lisa and Jesse are going to be over soon.
01:45After we got married, we bought a condo in downtown Chicago,
01:49and we lived there for five years.
01:51We decided we wanted to give suburbs a try.
01:53So we ended up buying my parents' house.
01:57It was a pretty remote area, so it felt very lonely at times.
02:03Moving somewhere, walking distance to shops and restaurants
02:07became important to us.
02:09Hi.
02:09Hey.
02:10Hi, guys.
02:11Hi.
02:11How we doing?
02:12Good to see you.
02:12So our house went on the market,
02:14and it sold within one day.
02:15So we need to find a house so that we can get out of living
02:20with Caitlin's parents.
02:21So what kind of house are you thinking?
02:23Are you thinking new construction, something a bit older?
02:26When I grew up, we lived across the street
02:29from this beautiful Tudor house.
02:31And for me, I think I'm gravitated towards that kind of style.
02:34I would love an old Cape Cod.
02:37Having this history and old charm inside, it tells a story.
02:42I would love a moody kitchen with some dark cabinetry,
02:46a dark marble island.
02:48I prefer a white kitchen.
02:49I love that clean look.
02:51So what are you thinking for bedrooms?
02:52I know you had so many in your old house.
02:54Way too many bedrooms.
02:56It was way too many spaces to design and worry about and clean.
03:00Just have it be, you know, one for us, one for a future nursery,
03:04and one for a guest.
03:06I think I want a bigger house.
03:07We entertain a lot.
03:09I play the drums and would love to have a music room.
03:12I also work from home.
03:14So I think we definitely need to be around, like,
03:17the four to five bedroom mark.
03:19Unfortunately, that means a higher price tag.
03:22We are approved to spend over a million.
03:25And so I think we should be looking at the 800K range
03:30so that we can find something that's going to be
03:33a good base to work with.
03:35Yeah, of course we can buy a million-dollar home,
03:38but I want to be able to make it a million-dollar home
03:43and show that creating a space that's well-designed
03:48can add so much value and earn it for a profit
03:52if we do decide to sell in the future.
03:54I think working from home, it makes it challenging
03:57to be in a construction space.
03:59You might need to get some noise-canceling headphones in.
04:06I think this is such a great location.
04:08We are right near the downtown.
04:11It's just that you can't walk to the train.
04:14Yeah, yeah.
04:14I know that this house is listed at $899.
04:19Concerns me a bit.
04:20True.
04:21At that price point, we may have to do this in phases
04:24if it needs work.
04:25You know me.
04:26I like instant gratification.
04:28This is really cool.
04:29I love how this driveway is long and windy.
04:32Yeah, it's a grand entrance for sure.
04:34Wow, this property is so amazing.
04:36I'm already getting a little nervous about the size
04:38of this property.
04:39Oh my gosh.
04:40Look at this place.
04:45This is really cool.
04:46Hi, guys.
04:47Hi, Maria.
04:47This house is a fairy tale driving in.
04:49You feel like you're arriving in a castle.
04:52Tudor style, Kyle.
04:53I know, I'm loving it.
04:55Just the overall vibe is exactly what I like.
04:58Right.
04:58Let's head in.
05:01The stained glass is really beautiful, though.
05:03Isn't it gorgeous?
05:04I love this turret.
05:05The limes casing.
05:06It's pretty.
05:06The turret, too, is pretty.
05:08Wow.
05:08Oh, boy.
05:09There's a lot going on here.
05:10There is.
05:11This is a lot to get.
05:12Very intricate.
05:13Just even painting it like a high-gloss black or a dark
05:17gray I think could be really cool.
05:20This is a dining room.
05:21And look at the ceiling.
05:22Yeah, the coffered ceiling is cool.
05:24I actually really like the fireplace, too.
05:26This is one of two kitchens.
05:28Wow.
05:29Oh, my goodness.
05:30It's definitely a full gut.
05:32I would change out the countertops to be a dark marble.
05:38I like the deck.
05:39It seems like a great space to entertain.
05:41It's a little awkward, but I feel like this yard
05:43actually would work.
05:46Beautiful wooden leg, and I love those details.
05:50I kind of love this room.
05:51I think it'd be a perfect opportunity
05:53to knock this wall down and expand the kitchen.
05:57Here, it's got these spectacular windows.
05:59You have these built-in.
06:00I really like the ceiling design.
06:01Yes, the ceiling is beautiful again.
06:03It's a nice detail.
06:05I love this room.
06:06So back in the corner here, we have a full bathroom.
06:10I think I could do this whole bathroom for $5,000.
06:12It's a lot of detail.
06:13Do you see this?
06:14I'm a little overwhelmed.
06:15Look at the...
06:16It's cool.
06:17It's not my style.
06:18It feels like you should rub it and get a wish.
06:22Here's one of the bedrooms.
06:24Kyle, look.
06:25It's set up for your music room already.
06:27I mean, this room is sweet.
06:28It is.
06:29It could be used for the office or the music room.
06:32And then you have a full bathroom in here also.
06:34Wow.
06:35This house just keeps going.
06:38First floor guest room would always, you know,
06:40I think that would be nice to have.
06:45So let's take a look at the room across the hallway
06:49from the primary.
06:50Yes.
06:51This could be a really good nursery.
06:52Yes.
06:53We have the big double doors here.
06:54This is quite the entrance to the primary bedroom.
06:58I love the paneled walls.
07:00The in-light stars are actually kind of cool.
07:03There's a closet in here too.
07:05Is this the only closet?
07:06I think that might be.
07:09What do you think?
07:10Oh, okay. It goes back.
07:11It goes all the way back.
07:12This is a full dressing room.
07:13It's going to cost, you know, $30,000.
07:16You think this room would cost $30,000 for...
07:18To build it out into the closet that we need and want?
07:21Yes.
07:22This house has tons of potential.
07:24I really do like a lot of the details in the home,
07:28and I'd love to play into those vintage accents
07:30and then add some modern touches and make it our own.
07:34They've updated this bathroom a little.
07:36Okay. I like...
07:37And look at this stained glass.
07:39Oh, the stained glass is cool.
07:41I mean, it's pretty spectacular.
07:43It's updated, but it's maybe updated 10 years ago.
07:47Right.
07:48And then we have...
07:49Oh, my goodness.
07:50This sitting area, Kyle's office.
07:52It's like a lofted space, yeah.
07:54And it's just too grand for me.
07:56So this room,
07:58this would be a family room or...
08:01It's just gigantic.
08:03Wow, look at that.
08:04We could throw the grand ball of Barrington in this house.
08:08Exactly.
08:09I don't think we would ever use this room
08:10unless we were entertaining.
08:12I think this would be a perfect place
08:14to watch television and hang out.
08:16I love the tall ceilings.
08:18This is a second kitchen I told you about.
08:20So it's more like even like a service kitchen,
08:23I would call it.
08:24Yes.
08:25It has that Tudor style.
08:27It's got the space.
08:28Putting a couple hundred thousand into this,
08:31I don't want to overextend ourselves.
08:32I don't think this house is as hard of a job as she may think.
08:37This could be a house that we could raise a family in.
08:40It's overwhelming for me.
08:41I'd much prefer something smaller
08:44and a lower price to give us more flexibility
08:46with making those design changes
08:48and not feeling overextended.
08:50So Maria finds a less expensive home,
08:53but Kyle's feeling the difference.
08:55It almost feels like a clown house.
08:57It's like pretty bad.
08:58I do like downtown Barrington.
09:09Yeah, these houses are so adorable.
09:11I could walk to the train.
09:13The house we're going to look at is $4.99,
09:16and it means that we have a lot of room to make renovations.
09:21You know, I understand that that makes you excited,
09:23but working from home, if this house needs a lot of work,
09:25it's going to be tough to take work calls all day.
09:31Looks like a Queen Anne style,
09:32which I wasn't really considering, but I really like it.
09:36Hi, guys.
09:37Hi, Maria.
09:37Hey, Maria.
09:38How's it going?
09:40It's a cool place.
09:41It is a historical home.
09:42It's registered.
09:43It has a lot of really good character.
09:46The roof line, the gables, the shake work on the roof,
09:50it's almost like a little dollhouse.
09:52It's also in the village.
09:53It's a great value in the village.
09:55Yes, definitely.
09:56Definitely.
09:58I love this front porch.
10:00I know.
10:00It's great.
10:02Oh, this has some cool architectural details.
10:05This is really cool.
10:06It's very grand.
10:07I like the staircase.
10:08This almost looks like it's part of the original house
10:11with this millwork detail here.
10:13And this gothic arch leading into the next room,
10:16that's a super cool feature.
10:18Right.
10:18And then the glass.
10:19That leaded glass window is so cool.
10:23I love the tall ceilings, even the archways.
10:26It really has that almost like Tudor feel
10:28that I'm looking forward to.
10:30This is like the dining room area.
10:33Here's a bedroom, actually.
10:35It almost feels like a clown house
10:36with all the different trim pieces.
10:38And it's like pretty bad.
10:40Don't you think this would be a great office, though?
10:42Well, what's back there behind those doors?
10:44This is actually a bathroom.
10:46OK, nice.
10:47And it's a beautiful color of pink.
10:49Wow.
10:51That is pink.
10:51That is a lot of shades of pink.
10:54This would be a full gut.
10:56That is for sure.
10:58It definitely brings me back to the 80s.
11:00All this work makes me really nervous.
11:03I know it's going to be expensive, and it's going to go long,
11:06and I have to work from home.
11:08So it just means longer time.
11:10But then you come into your white kitchen.
11:12Kyle, here's your white kitchen.
11:14Would this work for?
11:15Not to burst your bubble.
11:16This is also another full gut.
11:19If we could get rid of this wall entirely
11:22and open it up to the dining room,
11:23that gives us way more space to kind of relay this out
11:27and make it an incredible kitchen.
11:30Whoa, this is really where you can see the age of the house.
11:34Oh, wow.
11:35This is like a dungeon.
11:39This would have to be completely fixed.
11:42Yes, and then you can have your drums down here,
11:45and no one would bother you.
11:47Yeah, there's a lot to be done, and it's going to be a lot of money.
11:53It has a lot of vintage charm, which is exactly what I was looking for.
11:57It's much bigger and grander than I expected.
12:01This room is great.
12:02I do like the shape of it.
12:04This bed is awful.
12:09I'm not sure if it's big enough.
12:11This would be a really great nursery though,
12:13and the baby doesn't need that much space.
12:16With all the other renovations we have to do,
12:19at least this bathroom's functional.
12:21Yeah, and then we have the second bathroom right next to it.
12:24Would this be the primary bath?
12:26Okay.
12:26Yes.
12:26This is a nice surprise.
12:29Yeah, this definitely would work.
12:32Now we head into the primary.
12:34Oh boy, this is a lot smaller than what we're used to in a primary bedroom.
12:39I think we could add a dormer to add head space, making that feel a little bit larger.
12:50I could work with this yard.
12:52It's a really nice size.
12:54I see so much potential, and I think I could make it an amazing home.
13:00I really think that we need to spend on the higher side, more like seven-eighths,
13:05in order to get something that's just, you know, a little bit more done.
13:10But to get a place that's more turnkey in their price range,
13:13they'll have to put up with some quirks.
13:16The floor is going to be vibrating.
13:17Right.
13:27There's a lot of things that are good about this.
13:30The trees and the land is beautiful, but it's so far from a train.
13:34Oh, it's cute. I really like it.
13:35I do too.
13:36It has a Cape Cod feel to it.
13:38Yeah, I do love the dormers on the outside.
13:44I love this front lawn.
13:46I love this barrel vaulted entry here.
13:49Good morning.
13:50Hi, Maria.
13:51It's a nice Cape Cod.
13:53Yeah, I really like it.
13:54There's a really, a lot of nice architectural features to it,
13:58but it's also been redone too.
14:00Yeah, the pictures looked rather updated.
14:02It's really nice and clean.
14:04Wow, yeah.
14:04I love this trim work.
14:05Yeah, it has this vintage feel to it.
14:08The floors are cool too.
14:09I think I would restain them.
14:10This orange oak kind of reminds me of our last house
14:13that we kind of got rid of that color.
14:16This side over here, this would be your formal living room.
14:19Ooh, I like this.
14:20It's a nice room.
14:21We had a living room in our last house and we never used it.
14:24What about making this into an office for you, Kyle?
14:27I think that could work.
14:31This is cool.
14:32Yeah.
14:33It's really unique to have, yeah, this little vestibule here.
14:38And then they really kept all of the heavy wood paneling in here.
14:43Right.
14:43I love this room.
14:46The space feels nice.
14:47I don't know.
14:48I do not like when the range is on the island.
14:52I do not like this color granite and definitely getting rid of that hood.
14:56I do not like when the hoods are floating in the middle of the space like that.
14:59I just feel like it would be nice to not go into a place having construction right away.
15:07I'm almost wondering if there would be a way to open this up a bit.
15:12Yeah.
15:12And make this our family room for a better flow.
15:17I don't know.
15:17To me, that sounds like a lot of money and a lot of work.
15:23Let's head into this bedroom first.
15:26It's kind of a quaint sort of feeling in here.
15:30So this is the bathroom for the bedrooms up here.
15:33Yes.
15:34It's livable.
15:36If I'm going to be walking past this every day going down this hall, I can't stand to look at it.
15:41Okay.
15:41I imagine, you know, this being for future kids and then the whole family is on one floor.
15:48Right.
15:48Let's take a look at the primary.
15:50Okay.
15:51Oh, oh, wow.
15:53Very bright and fresh and clean.
15:55Yeah.
15:55I mean, to have that large of a window in the shower.
15:59All right.
15:59So you have a nice, big...
16:00Very large.
16:01Wow.
16:01This is a lot of real estate for a bedroom.
16:03Also, no carpeting.
16:04Yeah, I do like the wood floors continue on in here.
16:08Right.
16:08Okay.
16:09Let's head down again.
16:12I want you guys to see the basement.
16:17It's kind of a tight space for the drums.
16:20My only concern would be that it might be really loud.
16:23Yeah, I mean, if I'm up in the kitchen and you're playing drums down here,
16:26the floor is going to be vibrating.
16:28Right.
16:34All right.
16:36So today, here it is.
16:37Oh, interesting.
16:39The secret room.
16:40Wow.
16:43It's pretty big.
16:43It's almost a full kitchen almost.
16:46I could really see this serve as a guest room when we do have guests come in from out of town.
16:58Yeah, I mean, I love the stone here.
17:00I also really like the shape of the yard.
17:02Mm-hmm.
17:03And it's also super manageable.
17:04Yeah.
17:05Let's head around and we can get into the sun porch.
17:10I like the floor-to-ceiling windows in this.
17:12We would absolutely put a TV in here and cuddle up and watch a movie.
17:16So what do you think of the house?
17:18There are a lot of updates to the house that are nice.
17:20Mm-hmm.
17:21But with all the renovations that I talked about,
17:24Right.
17:24I think we're at about $150K, and that's really putting us at the top of our price.
17:29I mean, for me, I feel comfortable kind of spending at this price point.
17:34It's enough space.
17:35I would just have to think about what's worth it.
17:39Moving into this type of home, it's that Cape Cod style I like.
17:43But, you know, the trade-off is not being close to the train.
17:45Right.
17:46That is true.
17:47And I know we looked at a lot of houses, and you have a lot to look over and think about.
17:52It's a big decision.
18:01I'm going to grab a water.
18:02Do you want anything?
18:03I would love a water, please.
18:05It's time for Kaitlin and Kyle to decide which home is best,
18:08as they look to expand their family and move closer to town.
18:13What did you think of that Tudor house in Barrington?
18:16That driveway was so impressive.
18:18I know it is only a 10-minute drive from the town center of Barrington,
18:22so it does improve my commute by a little bit.
18:25I love that front room with all those windows.
18:28That primary bedroom was pretty insane.
18:31And then it opens up into this grand ballroom.
18:35Not only could it be this super impressive home for us to raise a family and grow into,
18:41but it's also a great investment.
18:43That queen and home needs a lot of work, but I can see it being super cool,
18:49especially the fact that it's right in downtown Barrington.
18:52It had that old character, vintage details.
18:55I loved the white kitchen.
18:57The bedrooms were just a little small.
19:00That primary bedroom, it just doesn't seem big enough.
19:03I really liked the house in Hawthorne Woods.
19:06I thought it had that Cape Cod charm.
19:09It felt updated.
19:10And I loved that space that could potentially become my office.
19:15And then that back room with all the heavy wood, super cool room.
19:20The kitchen wasn't my favorite.
19:21That shower in the primary bathroom was enormous.
19:25I'm not improving my commute time at all.
19:29This decision is extremely difficult.
19:40Let me show you my thoughts for this front porch.
19:44Yeah, I'm really excited to see this.
19:46We chose the Queen Anne in Barrington Village.
19:49It's the perfect place for Caitlin to make this our home.
19:52And it was on the lower side, so it gives us a lot of wiggle room to be able to make these changes.
19:58Because of all the natural light in here, going dark in this room really won't be a big deal.
20:04The house was listed for $4.99.
20:06We offered $4.50, but he came back, and at the end of the day, we settled on $4.60.
20:11This could be a really cool space.
20:13Just even painting it would make a huge difference.
20:16I love the vintage charm of this home and the history.
20:19And we both were really excited about the opportunity to live in the village of Barrington.
20:24What about this part right here?
20:25This is the heart.
20:26So this is meant to mimic whatever the material the mantle is.
20:30With all the renovations that need to take place, we're planning to live with my parents
20:36for the next six to eight months while all of that is underway.
20:39And hopefully be able to move in as soon as we can.
20:43The size is perfect. I thought it was for sure going to be way too small, but the basement is
20:49incredible. It needs to be finished, obviously, but it's the perfect size for us.
20:54I would love to show you the schemes that I have pulled for the rest of the house.
20:58Wow. These are beautiful.
21:00This house needs a lot of renovation, but you know, I think at the end of the day,
21:04it's going to work out great. And I love the fact that we actually are getting the whole thing,
21:09because that means it will be ours.
21:11So here's the dark countertop that I was talking about for the island.
21:16This is special. I know that she's so talented, but to see her do it in our home is so cool.
