00:01:31They're considered to be gateways to places not of this earth.

00:01:44It is perhaps the most sacred site in all of humanity.

00:01:50The place where three of the world's most prominent religions,

00:01:56Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, all converge.

00:02:02It is the heart and soul of what is called the Holy Land.

00:02:09Temple Mount, Old City, Jerusalem.

00:02:14And this 35-acre plateau, surrounded by ancient walls,

00:02:20has been considered sacred for thousands of years.

00:02:23The Temple Mount is sacred to Jews and Christians because it's at this spot

00:02:29that Abraham bound Isaac and prepared to sacrifice him in Genesis 22.

00:02:38For Muslims, this site is sacred because it's from the rock,

00:02:43where the Dome of the Rock today stands,

00:02:45that Mohammed ascended into heaven.

00:02:48What we have on the Temple Mount really is a mixture of three religions.

00:02:55And each one of them has got an aspect to it which makes the place even more important.

00:03:01But in Origen, really what we have is a place where God touched down on planet Earth.

00:03:07And ever after, this is the place where communications with the afterlife or the divine realm is to be made.

00:03:13Each year, millions of pilgrims come to Temple Mount to worship God and celebrate holy occasions.

00:03:21But why?

00:03:26In the 10th century BC, King David and the Israelites chose this rocky high ground to build a great temple.

00:03:35According to the Bible, King David, who had just made Jerusalem his capital,

00:03:40wanted to build in it a house for the Lord.

00:03:43But for reasons that aren't entirely clear, he didn't do so,

00:03:47and it was his son Solomon who built the first Jewish temple.

00:03:52Completed in 957 BC by David's son, King Solomon,

00:03:57the temple was said to house the Ark of the Covenant.

00:04:02It was very highly advanced architecturally,

00:04:05catching certain kinds of light, being very precise in its astronomical alignment.

00:04:10And the question for modern scholars and architects is,

00:04:16what was the level of technology available to King Solomon

00:04:20that allowed him to design and lay out the temple according to these principles?

00:04:25There's a text, as a matter of fact, called the Testament of Solomon,

00:04:30that suggests that Solomon didn't only use mortal builders and architects,

00:04:35but he brought in demons.

00:04:37He forced them to do some of the labor, because demons are especially strong.

00:04:42After King Solomon's temple was destroyed in the 6th century BC by the Babylonians,

00:04:51a second temple was built on the same site,

00:04:54in the 1st century BC by King Herod the Great.

00:05:00According to the New Testament,

00:05:02it was the second temple that played a significant role in the life of Jesus of Nazareth,

00:05:07because it was here that Jesus chased out the moneylenders,

00:05:13an event which led to his crucifixion and death

00:05:16at the hands of both the Jews and the Romans.

00:05:20And it was also nearby, on the Mount of Olives,

00:05:24that Jesus reportedly rose from the dead

00:05:27and ascended bodily into heaven.

00:05:29When we get to the story of Jesus,

00:05:34we find that his disciples believed that he ascended into heaven

00:05:39and then someday he would return.

00:05:43So this idea of the extraterrestrial reality of which Jesus is part

00:05:48is something that the biblical tradition says,

00:05:51yes, you can buy that.

00:05:54But might Jesus, like King Solomon before him,

00:05:57really have been connected to an otherworldly reality,

00:06:02as ancient astronaut theorists suggest.

00:06:05The topic of ascension when dealing with extraterrestrial contacts

00:06:09is a common one because we have Jesus ascending in the New Testament.

00:06:14These stories give credence to the fact that

00:06:17there is some type of technology

00:06:18that is lifting up human beings into a craft,

00:06:22into a waiting ship.

00:06:24nearly six centuries after the second Hebrew temple

00:06:30was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD,

00:06:35Persian invaders built yet another holy shrine on the site,

00:06:39the Dome of the Rock,

00:06:41known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

00:06:44This magnificent 7th century architectural monument of Islam

00:06:52was built over a huge outcrop of bedrock,

00:06:57which, according to Muslim tradition,

00:06:59was the site from which Muhammad had been taken up into heaven by God.

00:07:04In fact, there is a hole in the rock

00:07:08showing the exact route that Muhammad took

00:07:10when he ascended into heaven to Allah

00:07:13to have a vision of the divine

00:07:16and to return back once again to this very site.

00:07:20So for Muslims,

00:07:22the Dome of the Rock is a very significant

00:07:23and a very sacred place.

00:07:28According to the Islamic Quran,

00:07:30the rock from which Muhammad ascended

00:07:32is called the Foundation Stone.

00:07:35This rock is believed by religious scholars

00:07:38to have also been the very stone

00:07:40beneath the Ark of the Covenant

00:07:42and the Holy of Holies in Solomon's Temple.

00:07:47This is where God came down to earth

00:07:50and where certain people actually are set

00:07:53to have made contact with God.

00:07:55So this is a piece of rock

00:07:57which is of such importance

00:07:58because of the fact that something of the divine

00:08:01manifested itself there.

00:08:04That stone signifies the coming together

00:08:07of the kingdoms of heaven and earth.

00:08:10The problem is,

00:08:12we've forgotten that whoever visited us in the past

00:08:15wasn't God.

00:08:17But it was extraterrestrials.
