00:20Thank you very much!
00:22Oh!
00:24Hello!
00:26Hello, everybody!
00:28Good evening!
00:30You are so welcome to the show!
00:32Yes, Autumn is here, and like a misty September morning, I'm back.
00:36Cool, grey, and just a little bit damp.
00:39Anyway, we've got a great line-up for our first show of the season.
00:42Look over there, singing for us later, it's the fabulous Ray!
00:45CHEERING
00:47Love Ray!
00:49She'll be performing her new single, Where Is My Husband?
00:52But more to the point, where are my guests?
00:55Let's get them on!
00:56First off, we loved him as the Prince Off and Dicker in Grantchester,
01:00and we loved to hate him as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley.
01:03Now he brings us the epic succession drama, House of Guinness.
01:06It's our good friend, James Norton!

01:29His latest book, Poems and Prayers, is already a Sunday Times bestseller,
01:33while he returns to our screens in a heroic true story, The Lost Bus.
01:38It is a warm welcome back to Matthew McConaughey!

02:21And as The Rock, he conquered the wrestling world before turning action movie star,
02:28with roles in it's like Jumanji, Moana, and the Fast and Furious franchise.
02:32Now earning rave reviews for his performance as champion wrestler Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine,
02:38it's the mighty Dwayne Johnson!
02:40CHEERING
02:42Hello, Dwayne Johnson!
02:44How are you doing?
02:45How are you doing?
02:46How are you doing?
02:47Lovely to see you!
02:48Lovely to see you!
02:49Thank you!
02:50Hey!
02:51Welcome along!
02:52What a couch!
02:53Sit down, sit down, sit down!
02:54Lovely!
02:55Welcome along!
02:56Thank you very much for being here.
02:57Lovely to see you all.
02:58Thanks so much for having us!
02:59Cheers!
03:00Cheers!
03:01Cheers!
03:02Cheers!
03:03Cheers!
03:04Cheers!
03:05Cheers!
03:06Cheers!
03:07Cheers!
03:08Cheers!
03:09Cheers!
03:10Cheers!
03:11Okay!
03:12Yeah!
03:13If you're wondering, tequila!
03:14Now, some of you know it to...
03:15James, I've got to ask, are you alright because you injured yourself?
03:17You injured yourself. Are you all right? Because you don't know anyone?
03:22I know you
03:25And you've met the other packs we had a lovely time with yeah, this is tequila and other things yeah
03:34I am fine. I was this is the thing that's all now King of Conqueror which on BBC one on Sunday nights. Yes
03:39I I fell off the horse
03:41Yeah, I fell off horse and I broke my collarbone now
03:44In Iceland now, I was thinking oh that must be terrible to fall of a horse quite a distance
03:49And then I saw a picture of you with the horse and you are taller than yes
03:56Surely a pony
03:58Okay, yeah, so Iceland have a protective order on their horses
04:01You cannot import a horse because they have this kind of gene pool and it doesn't it can't be polluted
04:05And so we we having committed to shoot the whole thing and I said and I was a producer on the show as well
04:09So I we were tasked with finding the biggest Icelandic ponies we could find and they were
04:14But that was the biggest we could find
04:16Even though it was it was that small. I still broke my collarbone from falling from that great height. So yeah
04:21When did it happen?
04:22It happened at the very beginning of all the stunt sequences. That's fun. Yeah starts though
04:27If you have one of those scenes where you might get injured, it's a good thing to schedule those at the end of the show
04:32Yeah
04:34Yeah, it was rehearsal
04:36Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, well producers producers will do that
04:40They'll put the big stand but he's producing
04:41It was like he's a producer
04:44I learned a lot I learned a lot
04:48But also looking at that I'm thinking Dwayne never do an historical epic in Iceland because that pony would not survive
04:54No, by the way
04:56Does a regular horse make a noise when you get on it?
05:00Like does it go
05:02Me? Yeah, why?
05:04Because there's a lot of muscle mass there
05:06I mean that
05:08A horse would be going oh Jesus look at this
05:10Oh my god
05:12Many things groan when I get on it
05:14I'm writing that down
05:22I'm writing that down
05:24Thank you
05:26All right
05:28Let's get on with our first film tonight
05:30Dwayne and Emily are together in The Smashing Machine
05:32It's in cinemas from the 3rd of October
05:34And here's just a little taste of what to expect
05:38Don, can you take this picture for me?
05:40Yeah
05:42It's simple
05:44Am I going to hurt him before he hurts me?
05:46Yes, there was a light
05:50I will show you the light
05:56This ran for you to crown the greatest fighter in the world
06:02He has come back from the break
06:04Let's see if he can pull out a victory over Mark Coleman
06:08Have you spoken to either about finding such a good friend
06:12Or a life-changing amount of money?
06:16I just need you to let me in
06:18Always about you
06:20Only about fucking you
06:22Everything is about you!
06:26Let's fucking go
06:28Extra man, I love you
06:34Extra man, I love you
06:40So good
06:42Thank you man, thank you, thank you
06:44Thank you brother
06:46It is phenomenal
06:48It's a true story
06:50Mark Kerr, he was sort of the first star to come out of the MMA UFC world
06:54He was, yeah, for a lot of you who don't know him
06:56And a lot of people don't know him
06:58Mark Kerr was the first
07:00He was one of the pioneers of, there he is right there
07:02Of MMA
07:04And he was at one time
07:06He was the greatest fighter on the planet
07:08Heavyweight fighter
07:10There was no regulations
07:12And MMA was different
07:14And there was no infrastructure around it
07:16There was no financial planning
07:18There was just fighters
07:20And Mark fought his way to the top
07:22And he struggled
07:24And he struggled like a lot of fighters do
07:27Unfortunately though
07:28He struggled under pressure
07:29And the pressure in many ways got to him
07:31There was addiction involved
07:32And he wound up overdosing twice
07:34And he was lucky to be alive
07:35But he's here today
07:36And not here in the audience
07:38But he is alive
07:40Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Kerr
07:42But he is with us today
07:43And he had this unbelievable life
07:45And he had this volcanic relationship
07:48With his girlfriend
07:50Who eventually became his wife
07:51And they have a beautiful son named Bryce
07:53So it was really the role of a lifetime
07:56So Emily, tell us about Dawn
07:58Yeah
07:59I mean, she's an extraordinary person
08:01You know, and I found her
08:03When I spoke to her
08:04Sort of simultaneously heartbreaking and fierce
08:06And I think it is a very complex relationship
08:11To be in when you're with a very dedicated athlete
08:16Whose life is on the line constantly
08:18Yeah
08:19Through his own addiction
08:20Through actually being in the ring
08:21And they did have this rather hazardous relationship
08:25But I think the movie is less about
08:28You know, it's set to the backdrop of this 90s machismo
08:32But it's so about vulnerability and the brokenness
08:35And like how you never really know what's going on in someone's life
08:37You know
08:38Yeah
08:39And the image of invincibility is not really the truth
08:41You know
08:42And we've got to talk about the Venice Film Festival
08:44Because you took actual Mark Kerr with you
08:46Yeah
08:47So, I mean, obviously emotional to watch it
08:49But to watch it with him
08:50There he is
08:51To watch it with him
08:52That was the first time he'd seen it, right?
08:54It was the first time he'd seen it with an audience
08:56So, we get to the Venice Film Festival
08:58Which we're there for competition
08:59And we're sitting there and watching it
09:01I sit next to Mark
09:02Mark's a big guy
09:03And I could feel him
09:05And he's shaking
09:06He's shaking the entire movie
09:08Especially the fight scenes with him and his girlfriend
09:10Who eventually became his wife Dawn
09:12He's shaking
09:13Every once in a while I reach over and grab his knee
09:15And towards the end of the movie
09:17Where we have the big scene
09:19Yeah
09:20With Emily and I
09:21Don't ruin it
09:22I won't ruin it, no
09:23Don't hope a bitch
09:24I won't
09:25I won't
09:26I won't
09:27I won't
09:28I won't
09:29I won't
09:30So, anyway, you'll never guess what happens
09:31And then he is really shaking and crying
09:35And then I look over and Benny Safdie's holding his hand
09:38And, you know, in Venice Film Festival
09:41It's very ceremonial, right?
09:42Yes
09:43As we know
09:44And it means a lot
09:45Films mean a lot to people in Venice
09:47Yeah
09:48And at the Venice Film Festival
09:49And before the credits came up
09:51Um
09:52The audience erupts
09:54And they give us a fifteen and a half minute standing ovation
09:58And Mark Kerr
10:00Is sobbing
10:01Which makes us all cry
10:03Yeah
10:04Benny as well
10:05And it was just beautiful
10:06We've got a little bit of footage of the ovation
10:08Yes
10:09And I say
10:10It goes
10:11I mean, it's incredible
10:12Look at me
10:13By the way
10:14Yes
10:15Let's wait till this is over
10:16So I can embarrass you
10:17Because this is
10:18I know
10:19He's beside yourself
10:20Yes
10:21Mark Kerr's beside me
10:22That's Mark
10:23So there I am
10:24Right
10:25I'm
10:26Very emotional
10:27The house lights come on
10:28Before they're expected
10:29I'm crying
10:30And I'm trying to wipe my tears away
10:32To try and still stay cool
10:34And this one is like
10:35Can you believe that we did that thing
10:37Whatever the fucking joke was that she said
10:38No I didn't
10:39You can't believe
10:40What are you talking about
10:41You can see in the clip
10:42That he's crying
10:43And I went
10:44Do you remember on Jungle Cruise
10:45When you said you never cried
10:46I'm in a moment
10:48I'm in a moment
10:50I'm in a moment
10:51It's like the British thing
10:53No I think it's the British thing
10:54Like where
10:55It's like
10:56It's a long time
10:57For people to be clapping
10:58And I start to get embarrassed
10:59Yeah
11:00So I started making jokes
11:01Because I was like
11:02Oh God
11:03This is so much
11:04Yes
11:05Humble and grateful
11:06Yes
11:07It's quite hard
11:08Yeah it's hard
11:09Thank you so much
11:10And here's the thing
11:11You know
11:12Just watching the trailer there
11:13You know
11:14That idea of Dwayne Johnson
11:16Disappearing into any role
11:17You kind of think
11:18How can you transform
11:19But you do
11:20What
11:21What
11:22And it's not just the physical thing
11:24Because it's obviously this hair
11:25But other things went on
11:26It was
11:27About 22 prosthetics
11:29We had Kazuhiro
11:30Who's our Oscar winning prosthetic artist
11:32And he helped me transform
11:34There was also vocal transformation too
11:36But the idea I think of transforming for me
11:40Was something that
11:41You know
11:42I didn't know that I was
11:44I didn't know that that was for me
11:45And I wanted to do that
11:47Because a lot of times
11:48In the movies that I've made in the past
11:49The bigger movies
11:50They're big and they're fun
11:51And I've liked them
11:52From Jumanji to Moana
11:55And I'll go back to those
11:56But there was something about this opportunity
11:58Where there was a little
12:00There was a voice behind my ribcage
12:02That was just telling me
12:03Right
12:04So like
12:05Yeah
12:06And I'd share this with Emily
12:07For years
12:08Like it's just
12:09It's gnawing at my gut
12:10To do more
12:11And challenge myself
12:12And grow
12:13And do something
12:15Where I'm not
12:16Chasing box office
12:17But I'm doing it for me
12:18Yeah
12:19And it wound up being
12:20The most greatest
12:22Most gratifying thing
12:23And I've said this before
12:25And I mean it
12:26Smash the Machine
12:27Changed my life
12:28Well you so pulled it off
12:29Thank you very much
12:30You really did
12:31It really is phenomenal
12:32And Matthew
12:33I'm interested because
12:34You had a kind of
12:35Similar career pivot
12:36Yeah
12:37To what Wayne's doing now
12:38Yeah
12:39Where you had this
12:40Incredibly successful career
12:41With rom-coms
12:42And you went
12:43No I'm gonna search out
12:44Different sorts of parts
12:45More meaningful parts
12:46How hard was it
12:47To turn your back
12:48On that
12:49Incredibly successful career
12:50So similar to what
12:51Dwayne said
12:52I had that 4am
12:53In my solitude
12:54On my own
12:55Truth that hit me
12:56It lands like a butterfly
12:58And strikes like a lightning bolt
12:59At the same time
13:00That truth that you go
13:01Okay tomorrow
13:02When the sun comes up
13:03And I'm back in the masses
13:04And all the world's coming at me
13:05And all those offers
13:06I need to remember this truth
13:07Now
13:08I've been trying to get
13:09Dramas
13:10And was even offering
13:11Huge pay cuts
13:12And they're like
13:13No stay in your lane McConaughey
13:14You're the rom-com guy
13:15Mind you I enjoyed him
13:16But I was wanting to do
13:17Something different
13:18Because I couldn't do
13:19What I wanted to do
13:20I said I gotta stop doing
13:21What I'm doing
13:22So I said no more
13:23No more rom-coms
13:24Called the agent
13:25Said let the town know
13:26It's not gonna happen
13:27I went to Texas
13:28Camilla's pregnant
13:29On the ranch
13:30Quiet down there
13:31Camilla says to me
13:32Look you don't know
13:33How long it's gonna be dry
13:34How long you're gonna
13:35Not go with work
13:36This could go on
13:37But this is non-negotiable
13:38We're not going back
13:39I was like not going back
13:40Now
13:41A year goes by
13:42Nothing
13:43Nothing
13:44Matthew I haven't even heard
13:45Your name in six months
13:46I'm like okay
13:47I may have just wrote
13:48Myself a one way ticket
13:49Out of Hollywood
13:50I start to think about
13:51Other vocations
13:52School teacher
13:53Wildlife guide
13:54Maybe I'll go back
13:55To law school
13:56Alright
13:5718 months go by
13:58I really think I've done it
14:00I'm out
14:01I get this romantic action comedy
14:04It comes with an 8 million dollar offer
14:06I read it
14:07I pass
14:08I say no thank you
14:09Comes back with a 10 million dollar offer
14:10I said no thank you
14:11Comes back with a 12 million dollar offer
14:13I said no thank you
14:14It comes back with a 14.5 million dollar offer
14:17I said
14:18Let me read that thing
14:19Yay
14:21Same words as the 8 million dollar offer
14:23But it was better
14:24I can see myself
14:26This could work
14:27Right
14:28But I ultimately said no
14:30That must be so hard to say no
14:32It was
14:33But
14:34Saying no to it
14:35Thank you Hunter Lotus
14:36I think sent a little invisible message to Hollywood
14:39Oh McConaughey's not bluffing
14:40We were talking about not flinching
14:41Yes
14:42Not asking permission
14:43Oh he's playing offense
14:44He's not just doing nothing
14:45He's playing on
14:46He's
14:47He's on to something
14:48And
14:4920 months
14:50Two months after I turned that down
14:52The offers came in
14:54That I was looking for
14:55And they came in in droves
14:56It went Killer Joe
14:57Mud
14:58The True Detective
14:59Dallas Buyers
15:00Magic Mike
15:01They came in
15:02Everything I was looking for
15:03And I would not have
15:04They would not have come in
15:05If I wouldn't have unbranded
15:07For that 20 months
15:08Yes
15:09Alright
15:10Now Duany you didn't have to unbrand
15:11You had enough steam going
15:12I can make whatever choice I want
15:13And I'm going to make this happen over here
15:15It was a time for me
15:16Where I had to unbrand
15:17And it took 20 months
15:18But
15:19Then I was doing
15:20And all of a sudden
15:21My work was challenging
15:22The vitality I liked
15:23And I was like there we go
15:24So cool
15:25I know
15:26Absolutely
15:31And it's one thing that they
15:32Every actor they want to be successful
15:33But then you don't want to be typecast
15:35And James
15:36You know you were
15:37So good
15:38As Tommy Lee Royce
15:40In Happy Valley
15:41You had that kind of psychotic
15:43Faggot
15:48Like
15:49Were you just offered lots of
15:51Psycho villains after that
15:52Or
15:53Or
15:54Yeah
15:55Yeah
15:56I seem to get offered roles where
15:58They present as nice
15:59And kind of civil
16:00And then underneath
16:01They have a heart of stone
16:02And I don't know what that says about me
16:03But
16:04Yeah
16:05I mean
16:06I haven't
16:07I haven't had to rebrand
16:08Which is lovely
16:09I've been lucky
16:10I've been able to kind of
16:11Twist and turns
16:12And I think that's the way you keep learning
16:13And keep it fresh
16:14That's what every actor wants
16:15And
16:16Yeah
16:17I mean the villains are also really interesting
16:19The one I'm playing right now
16:20Is a beast
16:21Yes
16:22So you know I get to
16:23I get to play
16:24And yeah
16:25But I have to say I've cited you
16:26As someone who has done it
16:27And you know
16:28Now you as well Dwayne
16:29Like someone who has done it
16:30So elegantly
16:31You managed to
16:32Go against the grain
16:33Because the producers
16:34They want their job to be done easily
16:35You know
16:36You want your actor to have to go on
16:37These massive transformative journeys
16:38Because it costs money
16:39And you have to get dialect coaches
16:40And everything else
16:41You want the actor to walk in
16:42As the character
16:43And actually what we want to do
16:44Is go on those journeys
16:45Which you guys have just described
16:46So beautifully
16:47So yeah
16:48It's a tough kind of struggle
16:50Yeah
16:51Talking of returning to our role
16:52We've seen a lot of paparazzi pictures
16:54Of Miss Emily Blunt recently
16:56Because you
16:57Are you still filming
16:58Are you still filming
16:59The Devil Wears Prada 2
17:00Yes
17:05It must be lovely to be making something
17:06That people are so happy about
17:08They are so excited about it
17:09It is incredibly sweet
17:11I mean
17:12We're trying to keep as much of it
17:13Under wraps as we can
17:14But
17:15It's not just the paparazzi
17:16It's the fans
17:17Outside
17:18I've never experienced this
17:19Where it's just thousands of people
17:20Waiting outside the sets
17:21And
17:22I think when we made the first one
17:24Like we thought it was funny
17:25We were like
17:26It was really funny
17:27And then
17:28It comes out
17:29And I was a kid
17:30You know when it came out
17:31I mean it's 20 years ago
17:32And
17:33I remember my agent calling me
17:34Going
17:35You know this
17:36This is the opening weekend
17:37I was like
17:38Is that good
17:39Like I didn't know
17:40What was success was
17:41And
17:42And so it had this meteoric life
17:44And it's
17:45It's amazing
17:46To come back to it
17:47And because
17:48To make the second one
17:49Obviously they needed the four of you
17:50You standing
17:51Yeah
17:52So did the four of you
17:53Have a lot of say
17:54In what the story was going to be
17:55We did
17:56I mean I think they were very collaborative on it
17:57And you know
17:58They wanted everyone to be
17:59Happy
18:00They wanted us in cahoots with them
18:02Yeah
18:03It was really really cool
18:04Well we look forward to that
18:06But before then
18:07Do I urge you
18:08Go see Emily and Dwayne
18:09Give extraordinary performances
18:10In
18:11The Smashing Machine
18:12In cinemas
18:13From October the 3rd
18:14Very good
18:15Thank you
18:16Good day
18:17Thank you
18:18Okay
18:19Next up Matthew McConaughey
18:22He brings us the latest offering
18:24From director Paul Greengrass
18:26It's called
18:27The Lost Bus
18:28And it's out now
18:29In selected cinemas
18:30Then on Apple TV Plus
18:32From the 3rd of October
18:33Before we talk about it
18:34Here's some of the trail
18:36At approximately 6.30am this morning
18:39A fire entered the town of Paradise
18:45Where do you need to get to?
18:46My son's up there with his grandma
18:49It's too late
18:59I'm too late as a father
19:08It's not too late
19:16Wowza
19:19That was so cool
19:22I know
19:24And again
19:26This is another extraordinary true story
19:28Yeah
19:29These awful awful California wildfires in 2018
19:32And this kind of reluctant hero
19:34Tell us about Adam McKay
19:36Kevin McKay
19:37Kevin McKay
19:38Sorry
19:39In our story he's come home
19:40Because his father died
19:41And he's there to take care of his widowed mother
19:44And reconcile our relationship with his son
19:46From an earlier divorce in his life
19:49He's got a part time job
19:50As a school bus driver
19:52On this particular day
19:53Took the kids school
19:54Dropped them off
19:56Was out and about
19:57And fires were coming across the canyon
19:59They did that
20:00It happened all the time
20:01No one even got alarmed
20:02They always the first responders
20:03Head up there and put them out
20:04But on this day
20:05The winds came
20:06And the fires jumped the canyon
20:07So the first responders were stuck
20:09And while they were stuck
20:11They called it a mandatory evacuation
20:14Out of the town of Paradise
20:17When that happens Kevin McKay
20:18Has just made the decision
20:20I'm going to go back and get my mom
20:22And my son who cannot drive
20:24I'm going to save them
20:25Evacuate them
20:27Not two minutes later
20:28It comes through dispatch
20:29I've got 23 kids stranded
20:31On the east side of town
20:32Does anyone on that side of town
20:33Have an empty bus?
20:34Well guess who's got an empty bus?
20:38Do you pick that up and say yes?
20:40Or do you go get
20:42Yeah
20:43Your mom and your son?
20:44He picked it up
20:45And he said
20:46I got him
20:47He picks him up
20:48There's a teacher with him
20:49Mary Lugwig
20:50Who's played by America Ferreira
20:52And this is the story
20:53About the next six, seven, eight hours
20:55Of what happens
20:56Wow
20:57And you mentioned the personal side
20:58Of the idea of being attacked
20:59Yeah
21:00And of course
21:01That's incredibly present in this film
21:03Yeah
21:04Because it is a family affair
21:05Yes it is
21:06Check this out
21:07Ha ha ha
21:09I go home and pitch the script to my family
21:12As I always do
21:13Here's what it's about
21:14You know
21:15And if it's too R-rated
21:16You've got to kind of do it in a parable form
21:18Kids were old enough
21:20I told them that straight
21:21This one was about straight
21:22I get to the part about my son
21:25And my son Levi
21:26Who's 15 at the time goes
21:27Is that part cast yet?
21:28I said no
21:29He goes
21:30You think I can read for it?
21:31Oh my god
21:32And I just kind of look at him
21:33Huh?
21:34Have you ever read for anything before?
21:35No
21:36No
21:37So this surprises me
21:38But I kind of just give him a shoulder
21:39And like yeah right
21:40He comes back
21:41Next day
21:42The next day he badgers me four times
21:43I said okay
21:44Alright
21:45First off, sit down
21:46We're going to talk about what this acting gig is
21:48I said this ain't modeling
21:50This ain't no attitude
21:51Alright
21:52This is a frickin' rodeo
21:54And you got to go with soul
21:55And no bullshit in your bone
21:57So
21:58He goes well I already got a scene
21:59Worked out I want to shoot
22:00So I pulled out my camera shot
22:01And I was like first take
22:02I was like okay
22:03Kids got present
22:04He was able to behave honestly
22:06In front of the camera
22:07And I was like
22:08That's for starters
22:09You need that
22:10We did two takes
22:11I sent it to the casting director
22:12With a note saying
22:13I think this is good enough
22:14For a call back
22:15She writes back and says
22:17I think it's good enough
22:18To send it to the director
22:19Paul Greengrass
22:20I said great
22:21And it dawned on me
22:22Wait a minute
22:23Do me a favor
22:24Can you pull his last name?
22:25If he gets it
22:27Is he going to have an inkling
22:29That the last name helped him?
22:31Oh I don't want that happening
22:32So she pulled the last name
22:33Goes into Levi
22:34Paul sees it
22:35Director
22:36Looks like this
22:37This is the kid
22:38She said well you know
22:39That's actually Matthew's son
22:40In real life
22:41He goes even better
22:42Oh that's so cool
22:43And then so it's lovely
22:44Your son's in it
22:45Your mom's in it
22:46My mom's in it
22:47Mom's in it
22:48Tell them who she plays
22:49Tell them who she plays
22:50No she plays
22:52My mother
22:54There she is
22:56Kate McCauley
22:57She's been three years young
22:58Oh my gosh she's gorgeous
22:59Right
23:00No but look at your stomach
23:01Wow
23:02So
23:05What we're going through
23:07Paul and I would get together
23:08Every week
23:09And kind of just go over
23:10The last week
23:11How are we doing?
23:12Are we missing anything?
23:13Is there anything we want to do?
23:14Anything special?
23:15And the news was always good
23:16We were always happy
23:17With everything that was going
23:18But he said
23:19About four weeks in
23:20He goes I got one problem
23:21He goes I think I miscast the mother
23:22And I either misdirected it
23:23Or we got to rewrite this scene
23:24Do you know
23:25Do you have any idea
23:26I said let me think about it
23:28Next day he goes
23:29What about your mom?
23:30Wow
23:31They're making this family affair
23:32Pa said hang on a second
23:33He goes let's just cast her
23:34I said hang on
23:35Aw
23:36Hang on before we just cast her
23:37Let me get her in front of you
23:38And I said mom
23:39Can you send me
23:41A minute video
23:42On your phone
23:43Of why you love being a mom
23:44She sends me
23:45An eight minute video
23:46Of why she
23:47I show that to Paul
23:48He's like yes
23:49That's her
23:50Wow
23:51What was that conversation like
23:52When you told your mom?
23:53She was already into like
23:56Let me check with my agent
23:57Which she didn't have
23:58She was already like
24:02Yeah
24:03Well let me think about it
24:04Yeah
24:06That's awesome
24:07That's awesome
24:08This is all sounding very familiar
24:09To James Norton
24:10Because your dad
24:12Has he been in every single thing
24:13You've done?
24:14Dad?
24:15Has he?
24:16My dad has been in nearly everything I've ever done
24:18Yeah
24:19I'm terrified of him watching this
24:20Because I know I'm going to get a text saying
24:21Why can't I play your dad?
24:22I want to
24:23I want to
24:24You know I've got my notes ready
24:25He mostly does kind of supporting background work
24:27Yeah yeah
24:28He does a day as an essay on everything I do
24:30So here he is in the house of Guinness
24:32This is your current project
24:34Oh god
24:35There he is
24:36But we have found footage of him
24:38From War and Peace
24:39This is
24:40It's over
24:41Is it ten years ago?
24:42More than ten
24:43At least he flew himself out to Lithuania to shoot this
24:44He flies across the world
24:45I did
24:46I did wonder
24:47How the hell he ended up in Lithuania to be in this
24:49So he flew himself
24:50He loves it
24:51Yeah yeah
24:52Okay
24:53He gets a free haircut
24:54He kind of struts around the set like a peacock
24:56Gets you know
24:57You're not in this scene
24:59But keep an eye out
25:01I'll show you
25:02James out here
25:03I mean blink and you might miss him
25:05But here we go
25:06A warm peace
25:07It's all going very well
25:08Lovely
25:09Very dramatic
25:10And look
25:11Who's that in the moustache?
25:12There you go
25:15Did he keep the moustache?
25:17Yes
25:18He loved it
25:19Did he keep the moustache?
25:20He didn't keep the moustache
25:21No
25:22It's a new one in House of Guinness
25:23It's a new one in House of Guinness
25:24Yeah in House of Guinness
25:25He had to throw a bottle at me
25:26And he's not the most coordinated
25:27And it was a stunt sequence
25:29And he had to throw the bottle
25:30Multiple times
25:31But yeah no he loves it
25:32So when he comes out
25:33Is it specifically for one scene?
25:34Or does he just lurk around for many background scenes?
25:37No no no we make sure that he's only on for one scene
25:39I mean he would
25:40He would if he had the choice
25:41Get an agent
25:42I mean I'm terrified
25:44But has he never asked for lines?
25:45Has he never asked for
25:46He had a line in one thing
25:47Oh it was terrible
25:48He had a
25:49I'm sorry dad
25:50Dad?
25:51He had a line in Lady Chatley's Lover
25:53And I remember him
25:54It was um
25:55The director said
25:56Hugh let's give you a line
25:57And he improvised something about the state of the coal mine
26:00And he looks at me goes
26:01What the fuck?
26:02Like how do I
26:03What is he doing here?
26:04And then it was
26:05I don't know about you
26:06But you obviously
26:07Your son and your mum
26:08Obviously clearly
26:09Much more talented than my dad
26:10Because he was terrible
26:11And I was standing there
26:12And I'm trying to stay in character
26:13And all I have is this man going
26:14The coal is not coming up the ground
26:17Terrible
26:19Terrible
26:20Really distracting
26:21When you're
26:22A terrible actor
26:24And Dwayne
26:25Your mum
26:26She didn't act
26:27But she has now done some acting
26:29She has
26:30We actually saw
26:31I followed in Matthew's path
26:32And I put her in
26:34I cast her
26:35In live action Moana
26:37So she's in that
26:38Yeah
26:39Does she have lines?
26:40No thank God
26:41Okay
26:42You went the Norton route
26:44No yes
26:45You've talked about her before
26:47But I love the idea of your mother
26:48She enjoys your fame very much
26:50She loves it
26:51She does
26:52My mum's had a tough life
26:53And she
26:54So now she's living like
26:55There she is
26:56She's just living her best life
26:58And she does
26:59She's my biggest fan
27:00And she has this crazy room
27:03That's called the Smackdown room
27:05And in the Smackdown
27:06It's just all me
27:08Everything that I've
27:11I mean every little thing
27:13Anything you can think of
27:14She just shoves it in there
27:15And then there's
27:16Your mum has something like that?
27:17My mum has the same room
27:18She does
27:19It's not of you
27:20But it's of all my stuff
27:21That would be weird
27:23That would be amazing
27:26So your mum is your biggest fan?
27:28Yes but she also
27:29And she is my biggest fan
27:30But she also is very clear to take credit
27:33For all of
27:34Wow
27:35Yes
27:36Every role I've ever played
27:37Here's what she comes up after
27:39She goes
27:40Matt you did so good
27:41I can tell where you got it from
27:44Very proud
27:46But we
27:47That
27:48We're fine now
27:49My ship's stable enough
27:50I'm like
27:51Mum say whatever you want
27:52Whatever you want
27:53Now that she's got a great agent
27:54She's good
27:55Yes
27:56She published a book
27:57Yes
27:58Can you remember what the name of the book was?
27:59Oh yes
28:00Because I'm
28:01She probably
28:02Has already put a sticker of the title of the book
28:04On my truck
28:05It's called
28:06I Amaze Myself
28:10I feel like
28:11Every book
28:12Every book should be called
28:13I Amaze Myself
28:16Chapter 26
28:17Guess what the title is
28:19Some people deserve to be pissed on
28:26What is Christmas like in your mind?
28:31It's wild
28:33Is it novel?
28:34No it's short stories
28:36Some people
28:37It's probably helped out some people
28:38She's very much a
28:40She gets by on positive thinking and denial
28:44And it works
28:46And she's 93 and not shallow and kicking ass
28:48So
28:49Talking of books
28:50I must say
28:51After the success of your memoir Greenlights
28:53You now have a new book
28:55Poems and Prayers
28:56Yeah
28:57Number one in the New York Times
28:58We already know
28:59There's going to be
29:00The bestseller list in Sunday night
29:01Thank you
29:02Thank you
29:03Thank you
29:04And
29:05From what I read
29:06So
29:07A lot of the material in here
29:09You've been working on
29:10Off and on for years
29:11Yes
29:12So this is something you've always done
29:14Yeah I've been writing poetry since 18
29:16Yeah
29:17Yeah
29:18And I think you're going to do one for us
29:20Maybe
29:21Yeah I'd love to read one
29:22Have you got the book with you?
29:23Actually your mum is here
29:24She's here in her two piece bikini
29:27Ready to read
29:28I want to just set up
29:29Ready to be on somebody
29:30Well you've got the book there
29:31Oh you've got the book there
29:32Okay
29:33Why I wrote it
29:34And why I put it out now
29:35Seems to me belief is in short supply
29:39Look around
29:41You turn on the news
29:42You look around
29:43There's not much to believe in
29:44Or reasons to believe
29:46And that's not going to work
29:49Because if doubt wins
29:50We're all going to lose
29:51Alright so this is me looking for belief
29:53Because I found my own self getting cynical
29:55I found my own self objectifying people
29:57And kind of thinking
29:58I guess that's just the way it is
30:00First that scared me
30:01Secondly thankfully it pissed me off
30:03And I said no no no no no
30:04I promise I'll never become a cynic
30:06That's an early death
30:07If you do that
30:08So I wrote this to dive into my own belief
30:11And I've also found a lot of people along the way going
30:13They feel kind of the same way
30:14They're looking for belief
30:15So poems and prayers
30:16Instead of looking to reality
30:17And the evidence for belief
30:19Let's look at our dreams
30:21And our aspirations
30:22And see if we can bring those back down to earth
30:24And that's why I wrote this book
30:25There's a bunch in there
30:26Why don't I read one that's kind of funny
30:28Okay
30:29Alright and not that long
30:30How about that
30:31Alright it's called More Time
30:32I think it was about 2am
30:34The band played the last tune
30:36And I said amen
30:37Went to pay my tab over at the bar
30:39When the main event started tuning their guitar
30:42So I ordered myself another bottle of wine
30:45God I love it when I got more time
30:47Thought it was the year 2010
30:50Not a worrying sight in the fast lane again
30:53Signed all my checks one year tardy
30:56Cause it was 09
30:57And I hadn't left the party
30:59So happy my balance wasn't in the red
31:01God I love it when I'm early instead
31:03Met a woman I liked
31:05And she became my friend
31:07We turned into lovers
31:09And thought we'd make it until the end
31:10But as soon as we lined up
31:12Hand in hand in the queue
31:13My eyes started turning
31:15A lighter shade of blue
31:17Well sometimes love just loses its shine
31:20And sometimes leaving early
31:22Just gives you more time
31:24Come on
31:25Very good
31:26Very good
31:27Very good
31:28Very good
31:29Very good
31:30Thank you
31:31Meanwhile in another part of the forest
31:36James Norton brings us a new epic historical drama
31:40House of Guinness on Netflix now
31:43And here's a taste delicious
31:45The death of your father
31:47The death of your father
31:48Has served to poke a stick in a hornet's nest
31:54A gift from Mr Guinness
31:55And you're gonna start a war
31:57From a representative of the Dublin poor
32:01Children Sir Benjamin
32:02Sir Benjamin leaves behind
32:03Are weak and divided
32:05Now is the time
32:07To use that weakness
32:08Freedom!
32:12You think there'll be trouble today?
32:13The man's name is Guinness
32:15Of course there'll be fucking trouble
32:20And here's the thing
32:21Obviously the Guinness family who are kind of fighting for control of the brewery
32:46They're real
32:47Who do you play
32:48And are you kind of an actual historical figure?
32:51So I'm not
32:52I'm made up
32:53The story is a kind of
32:55The father Benjamin Guinness
32:56It's all true
32:57He died in the early 1860s
32:59And he left his power vacuum
33:01It's the kind of big dynasty show
33:03The four children then take over the brewery
33:05I play there
33:07Fixer, caretaker
33:08He runs the show
33:09He's the boss
33:10He's called Sean Rafferty
33:11And he's a badass
33:13Yeah he really is a badass
33:15It's really fun
33:16Yeah and it's by the same guy who wrote Peaky Blinders right?
33:19It's Stephen Knight
33:20Yeah and he is
33:21Oh I love Stephen Knight
33:22Yeah and he's firing on all cylinders
33:24He's in his element
33:25You can tell he had a lot of fun making it
33:28Yeah it's a really
33:29It's a romp you know
33:30It's an amazing period of history
33:31It's when this brand
33:33Guinness became this
33:34You know the biggest beer brand
33:35I didn't realise how famous Guinness was in the 1860s
33:38Yeah
33:39It was global already
33:40Well it was just
33:41This story is the kind of
33:42The moment it exploded into North America
33:44And on the kind of coattails of the Industrial Revolution
33:47And and
33:48But it's sort of
33:49It's smoky and sexy
33:50And it's irreverent
33:51And you know
33:52It's
33:53We have many names
33:54The crown with beer
33:55Subsession it's been called
33:59Subsession
34:00I mean there's many people who have coined it
34:01But yeah it's a lot of fun
34:02It's definitely a fun fun romp
34:03And when I watch something like this
34:05And you know you're in it
34:06And you're doing a really good Dublin accent
34:08Thank you
34:09When you said yes to it
34:10Did you just kind of think
34:11I'm sure I can do that accent
34:12Or did you know you could do a Dublin accent
34:15No I mean I was terrified
34:16You know the Irish are a very
34:18Well you know they're a very proud people
34:20At the right
34:21They'll tell you
34:22They will tell me
34:23They do
34:24They also do
34:25Have you done press in Ireland yet?
34:26I have
34:27You got away yet
34:28It's terrifying honestly
34:29I sat on this couch with Jamie Dornan
34:30And he told us he got crucified by a journalist
34:32For his Irish accent
34:33Yes
34:34And he's Irish
34:35I was in that movie with him
34:36You were in that movie
34:37And we got destroyed
34:38Yeah but he's Irish
34:39I mean
34:40I know he's
34:41But he's from Belfast
34:42Yeah that's true
34:43And they told him his Irish accent was shit
34:45So it was like
34:46I don't know what
34:47I don't know
34:48It was anyway
34:49But no I listen
34:50The accent was terrifying
34:51And I worked really hard at it
34:52Because you know
34:53We all know actors who didn't get it right
34:55And they do get held to account
34:57And did you have any kind of like
34:58Were you given shortcuts into it?
35:00Yes
35:01Yes I did
35:02I had an amazing dialect coach
35:03Called Paul Mousselides
35:04Who basically
35:05Yeah he gave
35:07He gave me
35:08I don't know if you've ever done this for an accent
35:10But he gave me kind of
35:11The vowels broken down into eight sounds
35:13And then these little poems actually
35:15Funnily enough
35:16I could follow
35:17I could follow with one of the poems
35:18But they were kind of ridiculous
35:20And I would listen to them
35:21And look kind of crazy walking around
35:23Can you remember any of them?
35:24I remember
35:25Like the sound
35:27I mean I'm going to butcher it
35:28And the Irish people are going to come
35:29No they're not
35:30They are
35:31You're not upset
35:32No I'm not upset
35:33It was a year and a half ago in my defence
35:34So like the sound like
35:35Wine, light, fine Ireland
35:38It was something like
35:40The prime height for umpours in Ireland is five foot nine
35:44I'm smiling now because of the fine white wine I'm drinking
35:47It makes me feel like I'm a lion flying over a toy
35:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
35:51You know what I mean?
35:52You did that
35:53Yeah, yeah, yeah
35:54You still got it
35:55You still got it
35:56That's one of
35:57That's cool
35:58Yeah, sure
35:59You meant that as an accent
36:00It's very scientific
36:01You break the accent down into these types
36:03Have you ever done an accent Matthew?
36:04Yes
36:05Yes
36:06Yeah, Tim Monick is who I worked with
36:07He's done the same things
36:08He's great
36:09Yeah
36:10Yeah, you give the little limericks and you just find the uh
36:13Actually the rhyme and the vowel sounds along the way and you start
36:18It sort of seeps in
36:19And uh James uh Norton the this is a you know it's a big action uh series a big action role for you
36:26And you know and we've we've had fighting we've had fires you bring us explosions
36:31I do
36:32Now have you ever had to do walking away from an explosion before?
36:36I'm so pleased we can get to talk about this
36:38Yeah, so we have
36:39No
36:40You you have I know you have because there is a song so we were shooting this scene um in in Liverpool
36:45And and my and Sean Rafferty my my role was made very easy because all I had to do was sort of strut and smoke cigarettes and look kind of cool
36:52And so with one of these scenes I was walking away from an explosion and my business partner and my dear dear best friend
36:57She she texts me in the middle of this this uh scene
36:59She said have you seen cool guys don't look back at explosions the lonely island guys have you seen it?
37:04Yeah
37:05The only sound book which you were in
37:06It's a song and he's cut together
37:08It's so good
37:09He's cut together all the actors and actresses over the over the time in Hollywood who have walked away from an explosion and not turned back
37:15You can't turn back
37:16You can't turn back but you are my inspiration
37:18Oh cool
37:19This is this is what actually in the series this is uh Sean Rafferty walking away from an explosion
37:24I'm not afraid of a bit of progress
37:28And wait for it oh there you go
37:30But then I do I look back do I not?
37:32No you don't
37:33No!
37:34It's so cool
37:35So the rules bearing are you don't look back that's a rule you don't look back
37:38Yeah
37:39And I suppose the other thing would be you wouldn't look sort of pleased with yourself for walking away from an explosion
37:43Oh no
37:44No don't don't look back don't don't look pleased
37:46Don't don't react don't look away
37:47He's just stone cold straight faces
37:49Stone cold straight faces all the way through
37:50Yeah like this is what I do kind of thing
37:52But by the way you're a producer make it happen
37:54Yeah I wasn't a producer on this but I didn't know what you're about
37:56Yeah
37:57So this is this is uh this is a slightly longer this is from behind the scenes of uh Sean Rafferty walking away from the explosion
38:05Oh
38:06So uh here he goes
38:07So there's the explosion not looking back oh he looked back
38:11At least he hasn't looked pleased with himself at all
38:14All right it's time for music the seven time brit award-winning grammy-nominated artist first set the world of light with her debut album by 21st century blues here performing her newly released single where is my husband it's ray

43:24I'm so happy for you
43:25So happy for you
43:26And

43:47Is it true that that's your granny?
43:48It's my grandma, yes
43:50Oh, I don't know if you picked it up
43:51This was right at the end of the track
43:53Your husband is coming
43:55Come on, grandma
43:58That's my best friend
43:59She's my best friend
44:01I call that lady every night
44:02We pray together
44:03We talk about life together
44:04That's my rock
44:05Punny no punny
44:06You know I sang your song today on the radio
44:11You did?
44:12Yeah
44:13What do you mean?
44:14Greg James, I sang it
44:15Like it was a challenge to me
44:16Like the rap portion
44:17Because you know there's like a
44:18Like a rhythm to it
44:20You sang I would like
44:21Yes
44:22It was crazy
44:23Yes
44:24I know I butchered it
44:25But it was terrible
44:27I'll tell her it was terrible
44:29I did
44:30So congratulations on everything
44:32Oh my gosh
44:33I would love to get that footage
44:34Please
44:35One of those life achievements
44:38That is the new single
44:40And it's going to be on the new album
44:42Yes
44:43Now when in the new album coming out?
44:45So you can pre-order it
44:47Great
44:48Pre-order it but it's just not done at all
44:49Like at all
44:50I'm an independent artist right
44:54You've got to get ahead of these things
44:56Okay
44:57We put it out there
44:58I've kind of given myself a rough deadline
45:00I would like to say the first third of next year
45:02Definitely the first half of next year
45:05Okay
45:06So I
45:07Okay
45:08This is not what I thought
45:09Sorry
45:10I thought it was kind of like
45:11Done you were just doing a little polishing
45:13Oh no
45:14No
45:15Yeah maybe add some
45:16Add some horns to that
45:17No
45:18Not at all
45:19So are you writing it right now?
45:20I am
45:21Yeah
45:22So it's a beautiful process
45:24But it does take time
45:26Yeah
45:27Yeah
45:28Yeah
45:29I had it in where is my husband eight days before it come out
45:32Do you know what I mean?
45:33So I'm combing away at it
45:34Chipping away
45:35No this could be better
45:36We should add this
45:37Yeah
45:38When you're writing do you sleep?
45:39Or are you just always churning with it?
45:41No you need rest
45:42Being tired in the studio is the worst
45:44Yeah
45:45Yeah you need to be on
45:46You need to be present
45:47And I think it's kind of like
45:48I imagine in your guys crafts
45:50You know when your heart starts beating
45:52And you just feel like
45:53This adrenaline goes
45:54And you're like
45:55I'm where I need to be right now
45:56I need to chase this feeling
45:57It's that feeling you know
45:58Yeah
45:59Being tired in the studio
46:00Your songs are going to suck
46:01But now
46:02If you're finishing the album
46:04Tell me this
46:05Does the album at least have a name?
46:07Erm
46:08Not really
46:09Kind of
46:10Kind of
46:11Kind of
46:12Kind of
46:13Is the title right now
46:14Oh nice
46:15Nice
46:16Kind of
46:17Yeah
46:18Actually
46:19So if Matthew McConaughey says it
46:20Yeah I need one of them
46:21You know they do quotes
46:22Of like you know
46:23It's just like Matthew McConaughey
46:24Kind of
46:25Yeah
46:26But look
46:27The one thing we do know
46:28Is you are going on tour
46:29Yes
46:30Yes you are
46:31When does that kick off?
