00:00Previously, on The Last Woodsman...
00:16Heads up!
00:20After a two-week scramble to fund access to the forever claim...
00:24We have to get every load we can get.
00:27Jared surpasses his $200,000 goal.
00:32We've worked really hard to make this deal.
00:34Everything is lining up perfectly.
00:37But the celebration is short-lived.
00:40You've got to be kidding me.
00:42Somebody beat me.
00:44Who?
00:45Looks like John Muhammad.
00:49I don't want to see people lose their jobs.
00:52I can't.
00:53If this doesn't happen, I'm...
00:57Is that right?
00:58Yes.
00:59Take it, right?
01:00It's the only case.
01:01I'm trying.
01:02It's not a dream.
01:03But this does not happen.
01:04It's the only case.
01:05It's about 3D.
01:06Did we pull this?
01:07We're gonna do some more.
01:08It's about a train.
01:09I will trip it out, of the way.
01:10It's about a train.
01:11It's about a train, you know.
01:13Help me!
01:15Yes, I will.
01:16I will trip it and it'll go in the water and it will deal with this.
01:29I'll put the grapple up though.
01:31Yeah.
01:33Not getting forever claimed is devastating.
01:36We are five weeks away from ending the operation in FloatCam.
01:48I got nowhere to go.
01:51This could be catastrophic for my business.
01:57This was the hill to die on for me, my company.
02:00This was the end-all be-all.
02:02I'm gonna have to come up with some kind of deal that John can't refuse.
02:07I'm gonna have to go see him in his office and try to make something out of this
02:13that's gonna save my company right now.
02:23Feeling a little rough this morning.
02:27Some crazy times, eh?
02:29Yeah.
02:32To the top.
02:45John Muhammad is a very big juggernaut.
02:49Everything from his own logging companies down to a huge log trading business that he owns.
02:55Hey John, how you doing?
02:57Good, Jared. Good to see you. How are you?
02:59Good.
03:00Yeah, how it sinks?
03:01Oh, you know, hanging in there.
03:03Times are tough, right?
03:05I don't have to tell you that.
03:06Yeah.
03:07You got the bid on the forever claim.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Yeah, I'm happy I got that.
03:13I was surprised you bid it actually.
03:14I know.
03:15You know, I really needed that for future expansion for my business.
03:19Wondering if we can somehow work out a deal or work together on it or...
03:26Well, I know I had plans for it, Jared.
03:28Like we gotta make sure we get that wood delivered on time for the customers we've committed it to.
03:33You had anybody lined up to do that work?
03:35Yeah, we were, I mean, we were looking at several options.
03:38Well, you know, I've got the equipment and I've got all the people to do it.
03:42So, I confronted all the startup costs, everything like that.
03:45And...
03:52I need to make this happen.
03:53So we, can you work with me?
03:57Well, I respect that you're a businessman and you want to grow your business.
04:01I've been there.
04:02I'm surprised you came here.
04:04But, you know, I need cash back on this for this season.
04:08How soon could you start there?
04:10I could pretty much start immediately.
04:15I could do something maybe...
04:19Per barge.
04:23120,000 in royalty per barge.
04:28Okay, that's a big number.
04:33I was thinking like 80.
04:36Yeah, that's not gonna work, Jared.
04:39Can we meet in the middle? 100?
04:41If I agree to 100 and you default, I need some backup.
04:48If you've defaulted on any payment of the royalties, no questions asked, I repossessed the float camp.
04:53Well?
04:54Yeah.
05:03Yep.
05:04You got one shot at this.
05:05I know.
05:06The minute I leave this office, I'll be going out there to get started.
05:10But I will ask, would you consider selling the forever claim to me at the end of the season?
05:15I mean, you're getting ahead of yourself.
05:17I mean, you're getting ahead of yourself.
05:18Let's focus on the production and the season first.
05:24I won't say no.
05:29But, I mean, I bid it hard to get it for our business.
05:34But I can't lose money on it, Jared.
05:36So, my number's gonna be, you know, aggressive.
05:42If I were to agree to sell it to you, the number's gonna be $2 million.
05:47$2 million, okay.
05:48That's, uh...
05:54It's good wood.
05:55It's good wood.
05:58Okay.
05:59Okay.
06:00I think we can make that work.
06:01$100,000 per barge.
06:03Yeah.
06:04$2 million at the end of the season.
06:06And float camp as collateral.
06:07As collateral.
06:10Okay.
06:11Well, I think we got a deal.
06:12Well, that was intense.
06:27This deal might not be the best deal, but this deal is the only deal I have right now.
06:33If I don't raise this $2 million, at the end of the season, I pretty much worked a whole season for nothing.
06:38And if I do not give John the royalties, I lose the deal.
06:43Not to mention my float camp.
06:45So, I'm in a major rock and a hard spot.
06:49I only have about a month to get Forever Claims started.
06:52To get this operation done quick, I am going to have to get every piece of available equipment that I can find.
06:59I have float camp, the main operation, but I have to split the crew in half.
07:04This is going to be the biggest test that I've ever put myself through.
07:10And this is going to be, for the ages, one of the biggest logging moves ever been done.
07:17The wind's blowing, the tide's ripping, and we got a huge barge to load.
07:36On the outskirts of float camp, Jared's race to ramp up the Forever Claim is at full sprint.
07:43Priority number one, barging every machine they can spare from their current operation, 80 miles up the coast.
07:50Well, you think we got enough gear?
07:57It's a big game of Tetris trying to figure out where everybody's going to fit.
08:03I have a lot of iron.
08:13Moving it is the challenge.
08:18We have to get our equipment farther than it's ever been, across rougher water than it's ever been.
08:24Very tippy, these ones.
08:30It's good.
08:32Logistics for the Forever Claim are a nightmare.
08:36Crazy expensive.
08:40After startup costs, Jared has 600 grand to put toward the Forever Claim buyout.
08:45But to reach 2 million by the end of the season, and hit John Muhammad's royalties in the meantime, he'll need every logging machine he can get.
09:02This is a graph yarder.
09:05Second biggest machine on this barge.
09:08Definitely worried about the ramp, the weight on the ramp.
09:11But we can't hold back now, it's time to go.
09:16What's that?
09:19Put it in there.
09:21I can put that crate truck for the knee.
09:23Do you want to walk this thing up that ramp?
09:26It's driving me insane.
09:30Loading barges is always a stressful time, especially for any owner, because it's very expensive.
09:37Everybody's had that grandpa that was doing a project, and he starts losing it on everybody.
09:42That's what I feel like when I'm loading barges.
09:45Stay out of my way, listen to me, and go give her hell to get this done.
09:50Damn the torpedoes!
09:52But the last machine aboard is the biggest by far.
09:58The 150-foot-tall super snorkel, driven by veteran operator Glenn Baird.
10:07Running the snorkel, it's a delicate operation.
10:11You have to be aware.
10:13You're talking about a couple hundred ton of machine, and it has three inches of clearance.
10:23One mistake in that thing, over it goes.
10:36Fingers crossed.
10:43Fingers crossed.
10:44Fingers crossed.
10:45Fingers crossed.
10:46Fingers crossed.
10:47Fingers crossed.
10:48Fingers crossed.
10:58Before Glenn got to the barge ramp, I noticed right away that his track was skipping.
11:04If those chains broke and that spud lock came off, the machine would just be doing circles, wiping out every single piece of equipment around it,
11:12and maybe toppling off the barge.
11:15So we've got to make sure this track doesn't come off.
11:22What have we got here today?
11:28She's moving already.
11:30Might not have a bunch of time.
11:4280 miles north of Float Camp, at the Forever Claim, the hunt for money trees is already underway.
11:59Get going, old man.
12:00With Fallers Chris Hersix and Brendan Bowman on the front line.
12:10What have we got here today?
12:13It's a nice tree.
12:15Looks like a tarantula.
12:17All these arms and legs off of it.
12:19With this tarantula tree, Brendan's deemed it starting to die from the top down, so might as well harvest this while it's still a good, valuable piece of wood.
12:33Just have to worry about these marms, especially that one on the backside.
12:36Yeah, the one popping off there, yeah.
12:38It ain't going to fall off if you cut it.
12:41Well, if anything, you ought to just pop back out, I would think.
12:44Flick out and take out your chicklets.
12:45Due to the many marms, or branches, jutting from its trunk, the 130-foot cedar has an extremely low center of gravity, which makes controlling the direction of its fall far more difficult.
13:04To compensate, Brendan will make an oversized face cut, which should point the tree toward a soft landing.
13:12But doing so will add tension to the marm growing up the backside.
13:17And if it's too much, it could snap back on Brendan with deadly force.
13:24I got faith.
13:25I got faith.
13:30All right, here we go.
13:32How's that look?
13:47So far, so good.
13:48I'm assuming when I cut this thing, it's probably going to, it's probably going to take right off.
13:55So I'm going to try and work around the front here and get as much of this cut up before I cut this back leg off.
13:59My dad was always out in the bush, so I was out there cutting fire with him quite a bit.
14:11I don't know, maybe 13?
14:12And just on the farm, cutting stuff up.
14:14And started hand-following in 1989.
14:18I love it.
14:19I've always loved it.
14:20Kind of master your own destiny.
14:22Either you do it right or you do it wrong, you made the decision.
14:34She's moving already.
14:36Yeah, I think I'll be going up in there.
14:38I think this is just going to tear right out.
14:40I might not have a bunch of time.
14:43All right, here we go.
14:52Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
15:11Ta-da!
15:15Nice shooting.
15:17Yeah, that's a dandy, that one.
15:19Yeah, that's some nice wood in that thing.
15:21It went exactly as planned.
15:23I managed to get it right where I wanted to.
15:25Saved right out to the top.
15:28Very little breakage.
15:29It's perfect.
15:32Yeah, if you add all those marms in,
15:33probably almost highway truck load right there.
15:36Boss is going to make some good money off of this one.
15:38There's so much usable fiber in it.
15:40Go see if there's any more good-paying logs out here.
15:43Further up the mountain,
15:51the race to build roads that will move logs to the water
15:58is already underway, with crewman Will Stratton
16:03and Ian Kennedy leading the charge.
16:05We're the front line.
16:07We're the first heavy equipment crew that comes in.
16:10We got to get in there and build the road as quick as possible.
16:13for the loggers.
16:16So far, Will and Ian are eight miles
16:18into what will be a 12-mile route,
16:21carved through solid rock.
16:25There's a lot of planning that goes into blowing up these rocks.
16:28You want to break it enough that you can use it or move it
16:31or whatever you need to do with it,
16:33but you also need to make sure that it's not going to just
16:36launch it, become a crater or a bigger problem.
16:40Well, I've been doing it for a few years now.
16:41I've had tons and tons of shots.
16:43And my favorite part of road building is basically all of it
16:47because you get to play with heavy equipment, big machines.
16:49I always loved that as a kid.
16:51And you get to do rock climbing and blowing stuff up never gets old.
16:55So that explosion at the end of your hard work just pays off every time.
17:00You leave your radio on?
17:04Oh, me.
17:08You put the detonator inside of the primer.
17:14In this case, we're going to put the primer right down to the bottom of the hole carefully.
17:19Then we'll take our bag of Anfo, put a little bit of Anfo in there.
17:27Once you're done loading the hole, you just grab whatever material.
17:31And what that does is it seals off the explosives so all of the power stays inside of the hole
17:40instead of just rifling a bunch of it out.
17:42Make a big boom.
17:43Make a big boom.
17:47Blasting sand 100, one shot, five minutes.
17:54OK.
17:55Back in the truck.
17:59Sure, that fuse is going?
18:01Yeah.
18:01I can see the smoke coming.
18:03It's still going.
18:12Probably feel the concussion from here.
18:33Wow, you really annihilated that one, didn't you?
18:37Yeah, there's a little bit of power behind it.
18:40There's some rocks to play with.
18:41Yeah.
18:42Jarrod would be happy if we can get this road done sooner than later.
18:5280 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp.
19:02That track's doing its floppy thing.
19:06Jarrod's all-out race to load a fleet of machines bound for the forever claim
19:11has stopped dead in its tracks.
19:13I'll have to get Scotty to get in his .
19:15Way better, Jarrod.
19:17The track's just about to fall off.
19:20That would have been catastrophic walking up here, pinching off the main route for all of our equipment.
19:25So, we decided to get a mechanic here to fix the track problem.
19:32So, we're going to have to use that black tank full of nitrogen so we can tighten the track and safely get onto the bar chair.
19:39Otherwise, it could be disastrous.
19:43Thank God we got Scotty here to fix this.
19:45Got her?
19:45Yeah.
19:46I think so.
19:47So, he's going to have to back on the barge.
20:06so he's gonna have to back on the barge
20:15definitely a nerve-wracking feeling
20:36that should hold her
20:38that's a lot of iron, Jared
20:42I'm amazed that we got it on
20:45and now he's gonna go through open water
20:48and rough as seas
20:51this barge should take a day
20:54to get to the forever claim
20:56I'm hoping everything stays on the barge
20:59let's just hope not a bumpy ocean
21:06high above the forever claim
21:14look at the cedar trees there
21:17so much potential for logging up here
21:20Jared arrives ahead of his fleet of logging machines
21:27with the crew spread thin
21:29there's a reported water issue with his secondary camp
21:32that could cripple the whole operation
21:34this whole job's starting to snowball
21:37to a whole bunch of problems
21:38started with a barge problem
21:40now we have a whole bunch of problems
21:41so definitely one of those days
21:43this camp consumes a lot of water
21:52everybody needs to shower
21:54we gotta wash dishes
21:55gotta do laundry
21:56you run out of water
21:58there's barely anything coming in
22:02I gotta go on the boat
22:04go up the creek
22:05we are in the most remote area I've ever been to
22:10that's riddled with grizzly bears
22:12I absolutely hate grizzly bears
22:15and I'm terrified of those things
22:17the water line is like a snickers bar for bears
22:21they love to chew the water lines for whatever reason
22:25I'm a little worried that we're going to encounter some wildlife
22:27on this little mission
22:29but I need to get that water going
22:31what we do here is we hike this big steel intake up there
22:48and we run water line all the way down to the barge camp
22:51seems to be bears chewing on it
22:55I gotta take it apart here
22:59check it
23:00make sure we got some pressure down there
23:02I'm a little nervous to have my head down here
23:06grizzly bear territory
23:07so hopefully I can make this fixed
23:10and make it happen quick
23:11there we go
23:22cleared some out of there
23:24cut myself
23:30probably going to need some stitches
23:32definitely one of those days
23:34further inland
23:47gotta put her in four low
23:50to climb up this slimy
23:51the logging machines arrive later today
23:56so fallers Chris and Brendan
23:58accelerate the hunt for more money trees to haul
24:01interesting
24:05yeah
24:06kind of looks like a crazy old cactus
24:08a big old desert cactus on the west coast
24:11good lean to it
24:14any bears?
24:19no bears
24:20nice straight piece of wood
24:22for the most part
24:23doesn't have those big hooks or nothing
24:25yeah
24:25quick pile of wood actually
24:28yeah
24:28fallen trees personally
24:30it gives me a lot of pride
24:33that I can go out there
24:34and do one of the world's most dangerous jobs
24:38there's nobody in the right line
24:40would want to do what we do out here
24:41I would think
24:42we all got that weird little screw
24:45that's just been loosened off a little too far
24:47I absolutely love
24:50the exhilaration
24:51the rush I get out of
24:53the challenges that I come across
24:55and I need that in life
24:57uh oh
25:00danger tree out in the back there
25:03I have to take a look at that
25:05figure out if it's a problem for this thing
25:08a danger tree is just a dead standing tree
25:12a safety hazard
25:14and working below something like that
25:17it's just not a smart thing to be doing
25:18because they could be compromised at any time
25:21got a big
25:22big crack in here
25:24it's fairly rotten
25:26it could run off of itself
25:28and be a hazard
25:29got a nice opening over there
25:31to slash her into
25:32just easier on a guy's mind
25:35if it's gone
25:35this dead tree is too far gone
25:39to have any value
25:40but if Chris were to leave it standing
25:44by the cactus seeder
25:46any ground disturbance from the fall
25:48could send it crashing down on him from behind
25:50so to hedge his bets
25:52he'll take it down solo
25:54before turning to the main target
25:56it's not gonna hit the ground talking about it
26:01about it
26:06just part bunları
26:10and it's gonna hit it
26:12have almost this
26:13could still hear
26:14and get messed up
26:15but it's gonna hit them
26:16i can't hear
26:17they haven't already
26:19just heard about it
26:20so it's gonna hit them
26:20you know
26:27it was just one little word
26:28Right on, right on.
26:42That thing was kind of gross.
26:44It's laid out there like a carpet now,
26:48so it makes my brain feel a lot safer now.
26:52Yeah, it'll be a much better work environment.
26:58Further up the mountain,
27:02after having made steady progress on their 12-mile logging road...
27:07Shut it off.
27:10Builders Will and Ian have hit a major barrier on the home stretch.
27:14It's not an everyday occurrence you come across this.
27:19It's a giant mess.
27:21It would be nice just to put the road down here,
27:23but there's that creek and that bridge,
27:25so we've got to build right up there.
27:27So we kind of have to be Ian.
27:29We're going to have to be very careful with how we do this one.
27:38It's going to be an interesting one to drill.
27:40I can't see anything when I'm drilling,
27:42so Ian's going to have to guide me in
27:44and just make sure I'm lined up level
27:46and set my depth and everything.
27:48So it's going to be a challenge.
27:57Hey!
27:58See where you want it?
27:59Yeah.
28:02Guys like Ian and I, we're always under pressure to build road
28:18and get things done as quickly as possible.
28:19to build road and get things done as quickly as possible.
28:23It definitely makes my job quite a lot easier
28:26working with someone that's really experienced.
28:44Well, time to load her up.
28:46Okay, let's get going.
28:50These are the big primers.
28:52They're 2x16.
28:53They're twice as big as the other ones.
28:55It'll give it a little extra kick for this big boulder
28:58because we don't want to come back to it.
29:00Send them to the moon.
29:01We won't have to deal with them.
29:03Yeah.
29:06Okay, I think that should be good.
29:10If you're happy, I'm happy.
29:16Blasting Sand 100, one shot, five minutes.
29:20Always make sure the truck's running before you light the fuse.
29:27There it goes.
29:32You ready?
29:33You ready?
29:34Yeah.
30:03Oh, that was a pretty good bang.
30:14Yeah.
30:16In the hills of the forever claim,
30:18Will and Ian are in the final stage of completing 12 miles of new logging road.
30:24So long as their latest blast has managed to clear their biggest blockage of all.
30:30Oh, it looks good.
30:32This looks good.
30:33It's all fractured up.
30:34We should be able to get it all down, cleaned up, make it look like it was never there.
30:38This shot went exactly how I wanted it to go.
30:44Everything's fractured up.
30:45There's no serious hazards on top.
30:48The roadblocks out of our way and just got to clear debris out from the last boulder and get the road done.
30:56Let's get at her.
31:04Back down by the water.
31:09It's D-Day today.
31:10After a 24-hour voyage, Jared's logging machinery has finally arrived at the forever claim.
31:17A lot of equipment on that barge, so how the snorkel gets off here is going to be very interesting.
31:23I'm a little concerned.
31:25Hopefully your track's not loose again, Glenn, because you've got to come up here and make a hard turn.
31:30That's when you'd lose the track.
31:32A track off anywhere is bad, but right here would be horrible.
31:36The worst.
31:37A barge load of equipment sitting behind it at $500 an hour.
31:44Yes.
31:45Yeah.
31:50I see your operating skills.
32:05You want me to launch ya?
32:07Just pray.
32:08Just pray.
32:26Come on, baby.
32:27No, I won't.
32:28That went pretty good.
32:29Yeah.
32:30Go up there and head to the left.
32:31Right on.
32:32Thanks, Glenn.
32:33Here we go.
32:34But the most difficult machines have no tracks.
32:35A pair of boom boats that are essential for moving logs in the water, but notoriously unstable on land.
32:37Boatways all on.
32:38Boatways all on.
32:39It's definitely maxing out everything that's done.
32:40It's good.
32:41Yeah.
32:42Right there.
32:43We're up there, and heads to the left.
32:44Right on.
32:45Thanks, Glenn.
32:46Here we go.
32:47Thanks, Glenn.
32:48Here we go.
32:49but the most difficult machines have no tracks a pair of boom boats that are essential for
32:58moving logs in the water but notoriously unstable on land boatways all on it's definitely maxing out
33:08everything this machine has
33:10just get that eerie feeling
33:20like that that's not a good feeling
33:27easy
33:40careful now lads watch it don't fall on you
33:43further up the road
33:53with a deadly danger tree now out of their way
33:58get into the big one here
34:00fallers chris and brendan are ready to bring down a red cedar worth upwards of twenty thousand dollars
34:06it's lean more or less straight but if i put it straight it's gonna catapult off that windfall
34:14there and definitely end up on the road so probably want to point it a little higher than normal
34:19it's just more or less worrying about this soft mushy ass ground almost like you're standing in
34:28a swamp roots can pull very easily in this kind of ground they've got the landslide and all the debris
34:34behind us that shows it's been unstable before so something to keep in mind yeah you bet
34:39with an entire fleet of logging machinery already heading uphill for work the last thing they need is
34:52is a shattered tree blocking their path so to counter its downhill
34:56here chris will aim his face cut higher up the bank for a softer landing and hope the whole thing
35:03doesn't uproot from the waterlogged soil first time's a tick in here so i better get this thing on the ground
35:10right now i'm just uh just putting a little cut in here
35:38just splitting this undercut so i could try and get it out make sure i have it lined up properly
35:47a nice clean undercut here
35:56it's pinching me on this side because it wants to go that way that's where all the weight of the tree is
36:01it's going to want to go quick
36:12so
36:28you really have to be careful on what kind of
36:30You really have to be careful on what kind of equipment you buy.
36:44I try to keep it the same, the same brands, the same vintages, the same size tires.
36:50If you can get the same equipment, you have to only stock so many parts.
36:56When you do lose a machine, you can now salvage those parts and they will fit the rest of your fleet.
37:05Also, my mechanics, if they work on the same brand of equipment 24-7, they know the quirks and what goes wrong with that piece of equipment.
37:15So I'm very, very mindful on what I buy, so everything's the same.
37:22The right equipment complement will make you successful.
37:26High in the hills of the forever clay.
37:39Oh, holy .
37:44Well, that's not a bad one, eh, partner?
38:01How's it getter?
38:02All the good wood's still there.
38:06It's not on the road.
38:07Yeah.
38:08As soon as trees hit the ground, especially when it works out for you, you know, your adrenaline's pumping.
38:14You're stoked.
38:15I'm going to say six foot.
38:17Yeah, she's just under.
38:18Nice.
38:19You know, you got a good log out of this thing and it's just, yeah, it's what we live for and why I do it.
38:26That's a beauty piece of wood, though.
38:28Yeah, for sure.
38:29Like, well, it's still holding, like, five feet in diameter up here.
38:32Yeah.
38:33I'll pay some bills.
38:34That's what we're here for.
38:36Now you're just going to show me the money.
38:42Back by the water.
38:43Hey!
38:44Hey!
38:45Watch it!
38:46There he wants it.
38:47Perfect.
39:00Struggling getting the light and water.
39:05I can't imagine what the big one's going to be like.
39:10You can just hear the tightening and the strain of everything.
39:37Fingers crossed.
39:44Come on, baby. Come on, baby.
39:48Good to see the goosebumps.
39:54Nice and gentle.
39:59Woo!
40:02Enough of that poor for today.
40:07Well, Glenn, pretty much gone.
40:10Yeah, right on.
40:11Pretty much done.
40:13Just a bit of scrapings left.
40:15Everything's off and we can get back to making some money.
40:17Yeah, for sure.
40:18Stop spending money and time to make money.
40:21By the end of this season, I gotta get $2 million.
40:25Just one of these trees could be worth tens of thousands of dollars.
40:31But I owe John a warranty.
40:34$100,000 per barge, every barge, without fail.
40:39Well, hopefully we'll get some wood.
40:43Oh, we will.
40:47Next time.
40:49John definitely has the upper hand.
40:53I have all this money out.
40:55This is a huge gamble.
40:57We're definitely on target.
40:58Okay.
40:59Well, I'm looking forward to that barge coming in.
41:01To keep my people employed, I have to make this work.
41:05Anything that can go wrong will go wrong if you let it.
41:08Failure is not an option.
41:10It's not an option.
41:20Oh, ****.
