00:00on the curse of folk island all right well this is the neighborhood guys i mean this is treasure
00:05central there's mounting evidence of something happening here long ago hopefully there's some
00:12old gold and silver look at that we've got a stone structure here somebody piled those stones so
00:19somebody put this here somebody went to some trouble it could be a 1500s hand cannon we're
00:25right here there is an island in the north atlantic where people have been looking for an incredible
00:36treasure for more than 200 years so far they have found a stone slab with strange symbols carved into
00:45it man-made workings that date to medieval times and a lead cross whose origin may be connected to
00:53the knights templar to date six men have died trying to solve the mystery and according to legend
01:03one more will have to die before the treasure can be found
01:18jerry bring me up to speed buddy where are we okay we're on g4.5 uh right now we're down 168 feet
01:30below break seems you dropping in there quite well yeah okay a new day of excitement and exploration
01:38has begun on oak island for brothers rick and marty lagina and their team for as far as our activities
01:46in the solution channel we're just getting started we got 168 all the way to 215 in this one steve
01:52212 maybe 212 the bottom of here yeah okay today they are drilling a new borehole called g4.5 on their
02:01strategic grid in the money pit area the team believes the treasure could have fallen deep below ground here
02:09into a water and mud filled cavern known as the solution channel there was great treasure in the
02:17money pit and there still is a great treasure in the money pit the clues are that there have been
02:22collapses in the past and it fell down into the solution channel i am more optimistic than ever that we
02:29are going to find it all right well this is the neighborhood guys yeah if there was ever anything in the
02:37money pit and i'm becoming a believer that there was with the pit blado coin yeah the team was
02:44recently presented with a 14th century silver portuguese coin possibly connected to a branch of the knights
02:51templar and reportedly found in the money pit by drilling foreman james pit blado in 1849
03:00now the team hopes to find many more of these coins as they drill in this area
03:09we've made significant discoveries island-wide but it's the treasure component that has made this
03:15mystery endure for 230 years we're all here because we're solely dedicated to solving the mystery of
03:22that is oak island i want to know that last page on the reader's digest article i want to know what
03:29happened here what is the story we're on track right now to get down into the zone of interest
03:36yeah and how soupy is it so far because you know what i'm looking for yeah there's no there's density
03:42here uh there's a little bit of water but basically there's more rock and rubble than there is water
03:47we could get into better stuff oh no question but we're just getting started okay i want to find where
03:53it's as unconsolidated as can be where something can easily you could picture it falling right in
03:59there yeah well from the human heart hope springs eternal and it's springing right now i mean this
04:07thing should open up we'll see in this next one hopefully we'll get into that slushy zone okay now we
04:13wait treasure central right here as the drilling operation continues in the money pit area
04:23you know i'm always happy to be back in the lab because we learned so much here
04:27but particularly invested in this one because the item before us billy gary and myself we found that
04:35and we found it in one of my most favorite places the swamp rick lagina and other members of the team
04:44join laird niven and emma culligan in the oak island lab we found the item before us in a very
04:51interesting place uh right across from the paved area so i look forward to uh learning more about it
04:58emma and laird have just finished analyzing a possible fragment of a firearm found one week ago on
05:07the western side of the swamp just a few yards from a paved stone feature uncovered back in 2019
05:16and that the team believes he's up to 800 years old when it first came out i'm thinking some kind of
05:23weight and then when it started drying out and you see the way it tapered down i'm hoping it's some kind
05:30of weapon well it was presented to us as a hand cannon i guess which is a precursor to flint locks
05:38and match locks and wheel locks that's going to make it pretty old is it not it it could if that's what it
05:44is right dating back to as early as the 12th century the hand cannon or handgon was invented
05:56in china and is considered to be the world's first true firearm by the 14th century variations on the
06:05weapon were developed in the middle east and europe until they were replaced by flintlock hand muskets
06:11and other firearms in the 15th century maybe we talk about the metallurgy first sure okay so it's
06:22always hard to get a swamp artifacts base metal because of all the minerals that kind of really
06:26mold with or just embed itself with the iron or the corrosion but i did get a few good points and from
06:36that composition it's looking fairly clean like i'm not seeing the wide range of impurities
06:42i am seeing a natural spike in sulfur content and that's a good sign of you know 1700s or older
06:50because of the minimum impurities like it's not forged in a modern glass furnace and could be european
06:56in origin yeah and we should add that by the 1500s those are going out of fashion wow
07:05is it possible that this hand cannon predates the discovery of the money pit by more than a century
07:14if so just how old could it be and who left it here
07:19is there a touch hole in that so i've done a ct scan this thing right here oh that's a tocho
07:30you're talking about this little hole here exactly a hand cannon had just a little touch hole where you
07:37would you would you would touch it to set off the gunpowder inside and then your projectile would fly
07:43out so it's an unusual artifact found in a very unusual area it's gorgeous and i tell you i've never
07:53been so appreciative of the ct scanner as i am right now in this moment yeah right that is really cool
08:01you were right gary this is something for a firearms expert to weigh in on
08:08so what other secrets are in the bog i don't know but right now we're nowhere near done i look forward
08:15to what else we can learn about it and i'm sure your brother's going to be happy we're
08:20spending more time in the swamp especially now a major find gary yeah we should aim to find mori
08:29i'm gunning for it
08:36all right there let's find some treasure here we go i'll wait until you take a few scoops out okay
08:45following their meeting in the lab gary and billy
08:48return to the western region of the swamp along with derek couch to search for additional clues
08:56what takes is one good find derek one good fun one thing
09:09whenever we've searched in the swamp we have come away with some really really cool old artifacts but
09:17one side of the swamp we haven't investigated a lot is the western side unfortunately no it's uh derek
09:26darn we're gonna have a really good scan around the area and hopefully
09:32winkle out a good find today
09:37right here big rock come on billy bring me a bucket of treasure
09:47hey gary what you seen billy
09:52look at that
09:52what you seen billy just a steak or a stick uh it looks like it could be a steak
10:02on the western side of the oak island swamp
10:05there you go yeah the team has just uncovered new evidence of man-made workings look at there's a log
10:13here yeah yeah can you pry that out yeah
10:22that's in there deep do you want to try scooping it i'll try to scrape back there a little bit maybe
10:29because it's in there
10:42that's it look
10:46there's our piece look it was on top of the clay yeah it's on top of the clay and it's it looks like
10:52it's peeled right the bark is peeled off of it the two ends are cut and the limbs are cut off of it
10:58so somebody might have laid it in there for something yep it actually looks like it can be a road
11:04because there's a lot of cut wood here and there's a lot of rocks underneath it in the clay yeah it's
11:10like a corduroy road yeah a possible corduroy road first designed in europe during the 11th century
11:20a corduroy road consists of logs that are placed tightly together and used to transport wagons and
11:27heavy cargo across marshy environments we know that these logs were laid that way so someone is coming
11:37this way into the swamp right if gary is correct that this feature is a corduroy road just who constructed
11:47it when and what could they have been moving into the swamp we found survey stakes we found the stone
11:54road we found part of the stone path on the edge of the bog we have the so-called vault there's more
12:02rocks here too right yeah perhaps we should follow this new road my hope is that there is another
12:09vault-like structure oh yeah what is that coal coal yeah we found some coal now this is interesting
12:27because the last time we found coal it was on that portuguese stone road on the other side of the swamp
12:34i'm pretty sure i'm pretty sure i found some of the stone path too yeah is it possible that the team has
12:40found another clue that might be connected to the stone road uncovered in the southeastern corner of the
12:46swamp and which may be of portuguese origin rick was interested if we find some coal because we'd be
12:55duplicating what happened across the other side of the swamp okay yep it was just here let me see if i can
13:02find some more that's a big piece yep we got some good samples yeah we got that right mate be interested
13:12to see if that's coal or charcoal as the search in the swamp continues several hundred yards to the west
13:21on lot five what's this exciting thing lard well it's kind of an unusual rock feature and it appears
13:31initially to be circular it is for sure yeah marty joins other team members as they investigate a strange
13:39stone feature found one week ago a feature located in the same area where six ancient roman coins were
13:47discovered in recent years it could be any number of things yeah okay well we've seen things like this
13:56turn into something very important yeah i hope this one does yeah well i think the first order of business
14:03is to clean off the sod and delineate it a little bit more all right well let's get after him give me a
14:09troll let's go all right there you go even though doing archaeology is not my strong suit nor is it
14:18something i particularly enjoy there you go i'm starting to get intrigued we have found roman coins near it
14:31so finding any construction where we found the roman coins almost by definition is going to be interesting
14:37we have here a bunch of little rocks pointy little rocks what is that telling you to me that's not
14:45field clearing if you're a farmer no you're not doing that they're not plowing that up yeah that's way
14:51too angular yeah we've got this cleaned off so we're ready to remove rocks excellent
14:58it's really amazing for me to think about when i first saw lot five so many years ago and seeing
15:06what it's evolved into right now not only how large and unusual the stone structure is but how unusual a
15:13lot of the artifacts you're finding are like the beads and the buttons it's turned into something
15:19mysterious and amazing to us that's all one rock yeah that's not moving by hand is it no
15:30not even close and it needs to go i think it'd be interesting this oil is covering it i found odd
15:36okay well i'll go i'll go grab the backhoe and see if i can find a way in here okay okay good
15:42the rocks are fragmented they look like they were put in there intentionally to keep this feature very stable
15:49it's gonna be a tight fit
15:54when i first saw this feature i found it very unusual because there's a split stone sitting upright
16:10it's pretty big it's lifting the other one up
16:14i haven't seen anything like the the split stone anywhere else on the island so
16:18to me the only explanation is that it's for marking something or for reference
16:24and it's just adding another intriguing page to the uh the story of lot five
16:36okay it's out we'll have to come in with trowels and just clean it up well these are jumbled up
16:41plenty rocks yep yep like lot 26 very similar to the wall isn't it yeah which is pretty cool all very odd
16:54hand-cut rocks similar to those found in the rock wall on lot 26 it's an intriguing observation for
17:03several reasons first the wall on lot 26 located several hundred yards to the southeast is much
17:12larger than the numerous other stone walls across the island that were constructed by farmers and
17:18settlers after the discovery of the money pit second carbon dating of charcoal found in the wall on lot
17:25that's 26 suggests it was constructed as early as the 15th century the rock wall
17:34and third according to researcher francisco nogaira the wall may have a distinct european origin
17:42this wall appears to be created in the world portuguese style of building rock fences
17:47no way so somebody put this here oh yeah yeah yeah is it possible that the same people constructed
17:58these two features it's worth continuing with our little investigation and it could have been
18:04put there for a reason yep all right let's get back after it okay
18:08as a new morning begins on oak island initial conclusions someone dug a hole propped that rock
18:21up in it and then filled it in with smaller rocks well laird and marty are joined by rick and other
18:30members of the team to continue investigating the strange boulder and stone feature on lot five
18:36so for some reason they needed that showing if you look at the rocks themselves it's that same kind
18:44of rubble that was in the wall in lot 26 that was dated to 1474 by charcoal somebody went to some
18:51trouble yeah what is the orientation really close east west isn't the lot five circular feature east west
18:59yeah the long axis if you know templar freemasonry it's always east west everything is oriented east west
19:09the orientation of the building structure had importance to them on these trips to europe and beyond
19:19every building we've encountered every structure that was templar influence
19:24templar built was oriented east west and laird is saying that this stone-faced is oriented east west
19:39i find that to be quite remarkable exceedingly interesting hey guys hey gotcha terry how are you
19:47terry oh and he's got his pick with him he's got his hammer all right terry we got questions number
19:54one is what do you make of that well something's going on here i would say that somebody piled those
20:00stones that's pretty clear right pretty clear that was flipped up and then they ringed it with rocks
20:06i would say yeah in that they've put that up against the other we've got the stone structure here
20:12did you take measurements here learn yeah it's six feet in diameter yeah six feet is 72 inches right and
20:20we know the rule of 72 goes back into antiquity nolan's cross is based on the rule of 72. that's true
20:30if we remember when john edwards gave his presentation he represented that the templars used the rule of 72. yeah
20:38the way to unlock nolan's cross is built into the cross itself in 2023 researcher john edwards presented
20:49the team with a potential link between the order of the knights templar and the design of nolan's cross
20:55when you go and look at the two arms of the cross it's 720 everything was divisible by 72. numbers used
21:03have to be of significance to whoever built nolan's cross and i'm suggesting it might be the templars
21:10because they used the latin rule of 72. the latin rule which is also known as specific behavior for
21:17the templar order was written in the early 12th century by ugde pan and bernard of clairvaux two of
21:25the founding members of the templar order the document contained a set of 72 directives that all
21:33templar knights were sworn to live by and curiously john edwards research revealed that the symbolic
21:41number of 72 was incorporated into the designs of numerous templar related structures all across
21:49medieval europe so the fact that it is six feet in diameter it might mean something it might be
21:56meaningful could rick be correct that this feature and nolan's cross represent further evidence of a
22:04templar connection to the oak island mystery there was a purpose here an intelligent design i'm also
22:11thinking how many more of these are around imagine that another puzzle yeah i think what we'll do is
22:17we'll clean out this side a little more and then we'll clean off the rest right on what we should do is
22:24have steve come out take a line i'm quite fascinated with the possibility of numerical relationships
22:30between this and other stone features on the island and to be honest the only way to find out is to do it
22:36correct right so okie doke we'll get on to other things all right later as laird continues uncovering
22:44the new stone feature on lot five i brought a lot of bags mate i'm expecting a good day for artifacts
22:50we'll try to fill them here we go get stuck in over on the western edge of the swamp gary billy
22:58and derek search for more clues that's a little surface nail oh begin to begin again
23:12rock right there i can see the odd clay in the rocks okay i'm gonna have a detect
23:30it's in there
23:35that's a little bit stronger
23:36there you go mate give it some welly
23:55stuck between a rock and a hard place this looks like it's deeper down derek
24:09this has got a chance of being older come
24:14still in there are about to witness a little bit of oak island history derek
24:25i'll try to pinpoint it
24:31it is that the heck is that
24:44the heck is it yeah it's heavy while searching near the log roadway on the western side of the swamp
24:52members of the oak island team have just found another mysterious artifact
24:59a lot of times when we find old iron like this and it's really heavy for for its size it turns out
25:06to be older iron i have no idea what it is billy you know it doesn't just look like a piece of slag
25:12metal either you know you got the sharp angles cut there right like it's a something yeah it's made on
25:17purpose like that that's good we got some old iron coming up yep hopefully there's some old gold and
25:24silver yep we'll put that in the bag anytime you find an artifact on oak island it always has more of a
25:33story to tell see there's anything else there's a lot of iron around it and we've previously recovered
25:43really good artifacts in the swamp hopefully we can find some more
25:57some small yeah
26:03talk about a needle in a clay stick
26:06we ain't missing nothing derrick no definitely not yeah i know it's only a little iron needle but it
26:18can tell a story oh put that in the bag
26:22you guys all right chaps what on earth are you guys doing here we are digging the heck out of this
26:31area and we've got a couple of interesting pieces of iron yeah i'll show you what do you think of them
26:38derrick this one needled him a little bit wow it is a needle isn't it yeah little iron needle wait
26:48wait let me see look how little that is
26:54boy it shows again how good you are at finding stuff you gotta be kidding i don't know it almost
27:01looks like it has a patina too the other one i don't know what to think about now this was great
27:06because it was deep down there we had to dig it out and it's nice and heavy
27:12that is heavy that's cool you generally have an idea you know what the more i look at it to me it
27:19looks like an old iron buckle and that's just one end of it that little area there could come out
27:26these two ends that'd be a big buckle yeah be a big buckle could be off boxes
27:32could gary be correct that he has found an iron buckle that may have once been attached to a large
27:39chest if so was it possibly related to some kind of valuable cargo and could it also help explain
27:48why the nearby corduroy road was constructed well i've always been a swamp skeptic i said for years
27:55that one of the best ways to hide a treasure would be to flood it and flooding it in a you know swamp
28:03like condition would be ideal because there would be absolutely no trace if you did it oh yeah it's
28:09possible that what we seek is in that swamp absolutely possible well that has emma written all over it
28:14doesn't it oh yeah probably a really old piece of iron yeah you know what i'm going to say yeah that's
28:20good but find some more well keep going there's no stone unturned there you go as gary billy and
28:29derrick search for more evidence of treasure in the swamp later that afternoon
28:38okay we got a core coming guys here we go it's perfect timing because big brother just showed up
28:44rick joins marty and other members of the team in the money pit area
28:50that looks like a good recovery or you wouldn't need that as the drilling operation in borehole g
28:584.5 approaches the bottom of the solution channel
29:05that's 208 terry 208 we hit the bottom at 206 206 to 208 to the bottom all right
29:12all right g4.5 is about to tell us everything has got to say
29:27there you go
29:30unfortunately it's uh got quite a lot of solid material in amongst the water this is not the
29:36loose material we're looking for sadly nothing to write home about in particular i guess
29:43who's got the pinpointer inside the box there so we're gonna have to get it on that table
29:49over let's go okay let me pull her back
29:52nothing nope nope
30:04we were hoping for a home run by that i mean we would come up with a coin or something and say oh
30:09there it is there's where the treasure is
30:11anything no no luck sorry rick no joy
30:26but i really like this i called it treasure central i am disappointed here yeah
30:33and i'm frustrated we were very hopeful that the core would retrieve something man-made from those
30:39steps it's very troubling and i wonder if maybe it's gone maybe it's lost forever
30:47i mean uh that's possible at this point we don't know the fact that we didn't bullseye the target yet
30:55is that disappointing yes i don't know what the next ones are they're all still in and around here
31:00right absolutely and i mean we're not done yet we have to find the void nothing fell into this
31:06for right now that's it's general bottom in this area okay on to the next one okay
31:14at the start of a new day on oak island members of the team begin drilling a new borehole in the
31:22money pit area to continue exploring the murky depths of the solution channel
31:27as new ground is broken marty finds his brother more than 500 feet away at smith's cove hey hey
31:38you're looking a little pensive yeah a little bit i happen to come down to smith's cove and i see rick
31:44sitting there kind of looking out over the water he's looking discouraged we were hoping that we'd get
31:49a sliver of a coin or a fraction of a piece of gold or something that would absolutely pinpoint
31:56where we needed to go well we didn't it's nice to take a deep breath once in a while isn't it
32:03are you disappointed a little bit about the um results so far and the drilling in the solution
32:10channel were you disappointed yeah i'm disappointed because i wanted to put you know some something of
32:17supreme monetary value on the table but i think the theory makes sense i think it really makes sense
32:24you know you the early guys find a vault at 90 feet and then everything collapses down a little
32:30bit you know all kinds of things happen then we know that things fell again and we know the money
32:35pit collapsed violently so it would answer everything yeah so i'm probably more hopeful than i've ever been
32:41because i got something in mind that would explain everything the purpose of the of the deep drilling this
32:48year was really come up with a piece of treasure but the second part was to define this solution
32:54channel to figure out where it is big enough and open enough for this collapse to have occurred the
33:01second component is coming in nicely we're defining that thing pretty well we have a theory that makes
33:07sense and is still supported completely by the science that there are precious metals still in the money
33:14pit area a couple those two things together and it's still pretty exciting you know i've always always
33:21believed in a story here yeah certainly and uh i think every year we prove that is probably more
33:29complex and more difficult than we had imagined that's for sure when you get depressed and down you
33:35don't say who gets to do this who gets to take hold of a great treasure story and run with it
33:42well absolutely a couple of youpers trying to do a kind of a cool thing yeah i'll be honest marty is
33:48right we are absolutely committed to defining the solution channel as best we can my hope is that
33:55something can be retrieved in the near term that say you know here we here we are come get us but for
34:04right now i think we should be patient man we've been so blessed with the people we've met the
34:14things we've experienced the things we've done i mean i could i couldn't the last years
34:19these last years i couldn't have asked for anything better i really couldn't have it's been a
34:23unbelievable quest to decipher what the hell happened here
34:29something i want to let's go ain't gonna find itself
34:37later that morning
34:40good morning matthew hi sir rick marty and other members of the team meet via video conference with
34:47maltese military historian matthew balzan to discuss the possible piece of a hand cannon recovered
34:54in the swamp we very much look forward to your analysis of the item that has been found here
35:01and i believe you have the report in front of you that we have done here on the island yes
35:06hey matthew hi how are you good in 2024 rick and members of the team met matthew in malta
35:15while researching potential ties between templar related orders and the oak island mystery and
35:22were stunned by his assessment of a pickaxe that they found deep in the money pit area this was
35:29employed in malta for centuries wow now given laird and emma's preliminary analysis on the hand cannon
35:40the team wonders if matthew can help them determine its origin the hand cannon emerged in the 1200s in
35:48european culture it was used in warfare mostly from the 13th to the 15th at most early 16th century
35:59would this be a possible 1200s artifact yes wow what i find interesting and strange however
36:07was i don't know exactly how that fits into your site's history
36:22would this be a possible 1200s artifact yes that i find quite strange because i don't know exactly how
36:30that fits into your site's history in the war room maltese military historian matthew balzad has
36:38just informed the team that the hand cannon found in the swamp could be as much as 800 years old
36:47it's interesting matthew extremely interesting i mean the likelihood of finding a hand cannon
36:53on oak island it sure seems an unlikely thing to find here i will say that
36:57exactly do you know matthew would the portuguese be more likely to use this than the french or is
37:04there any sort of correlation there in the italian legion it was used a lot france as well spain
37:12being an empire use them as well so it was widespread however i did not encounter it in the same time
37:20frame in the americas so that's what makes it quite uh curious yeah we don't know if we try to interpret
37:30this artifact in a different way it might have been used as some sort of apparatus in order to direct
37:38the blast of a gunpowder in a particular way to break the hard bedrock
37:43and mortar we still use explosives to crack rock till this very day
37:51you wonder though in a confined space like say a tunnel would this be more useful
37:57it would probably be more efficient than just drilling a hole in the rock
38:00i'm guessing well it's the old repurposing thing too it's like hey use that you know why not
38:06it's probably quicker yeah the rock breaking thing is a little interesting to me just thinking of
38:11where we found it right the swamp but when you think of the paved area there's so much broken
38:17pieces of rock that really have to be fitted in place when we got the paved area i said you know
38:21you almost wanted a quarry somewhere nearby but if you needed to get certain size rocks to make that
38:25perfectly level you might come with that tool and try to start to blast some rocks up to build your
38:29platforms level right yeah is it possible that the hand cannon was fired at large rocks to break them
38:38up for the creation of the potentially 800 year old paved area if so might the hand cannon also be related
38:48to the other strange structures on the island such as the wall on lot 26 or the rock formation that was
38:55recently uncovered on lot five we've been surprised by just so many things the swamp is being old and
39:02here's another one now that stacks up being way before anything in our history that should be there
39:07right so yeah it's pre-columbus if this is true then it shows that people were crossing the atlantic much
39:13earlier than what we thought look you've come a long way and so is peter so is alex but there's mounting
39:20evidence of something happening here very early where where where are you right now me yeah you can't
39:29discard evidence that you find uncomfortable you can't discard it and there it sits so i think there's
39:36starting to be quite a lot of data that strongly suggests there were europeans here long before history
39:45would suggest they were here yeah but it hasn't been quite proven yet hmm is that fair yeah we need
39:53that smoking gun gun gun fire fire it when people think of a treasure hunt they think that every day
40:02is successful every day is an aha moment that's not true but at some point there will come a moment
40:10where you say to yourself yes it is worth it and this is why the complexity of the oak island story
40:18far and away exceeds my thoughts as a young boy when reading it this was as always really really
40:25interesting yeah yeah matthew we certainly uh appreciate your time uh this was highly informative
40:32it's really quite something a very unique find whatever i can help thank you very much many thanks
40:39very nice to see you again take care see you well we continue to work away then so having said that i
40:47think we all need to get back to work yeah amen
40:49a vast treasure may still lie deep below oak island but once again through faith and persistence rick
41:02marty and their team have found new clues that suggest the incredible truth about this 230 year old mystery
41:10might be revealed much closer to the surface
41:14so as they forge ahead in the murky depths of the money pit they must never stop looking
41:22for what could be hiding in plain sight
41:29next time on the curse of oak island the metal we're seeing in the water is in the solution
41:34channel absolutely there's metal underground that isn't natural we found gold signal
41:40oh yeah what do you got the heck is that doing here this right here is a key to navigation but it
41:46might be a key for the alignment of no one's cross this road goes from the beach to the money pit
41:52we're just under the bottom of the solution channel where are you little gold coin you see it come on there
41:56you go
