00:00What if I told you 300 billion euros of Russia's money is just sitting frozen in Europe,

00:05and no one agrees on what to do with it?

00:07When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the West hit back hard by freezing its assets.

00:13We're talking about cash, bonds, yachts, and real estate worth over 300 billion euros.

00:19These frozen assets belong to both the Russian state and sanctioned billionaires.

00:24Most of this money, over 180 billion euros, is stuck at Euroclear in Belgium.

00:28Now, many European countries, like Germany and France, want to use it to help rebuild Ukraine.

00:35They say Russia should pay for the destruction it caused.

00:38But it's not that simple.

00:39Belgium, Italy, Malta, and Bulgaria are saying, not so fast.

00:44Why?

00:45Because using these assets could trigger legal trouble, investor backlash, or even lawsuits from Moscow.

00:51In fact, Russia is already suing Euroclear for 200 billion euros.

00:55The EU did find a loophole, though.

00:57They're now using the profits made off those assets, not the assets themselves.

01:02And in 2024, Ukraine got its first 1.5 billion euros from those earnings.

01:07Meanwhile, Trump's leaked peace plan suggests using frozen EU assets to benefit U.S. companies.

01:13The EU didn't like that one bit.

01:15So now they've indefinitely immobilized the assets to keep control,

01:19and keep them out of American hands.

01:21So the money's frozen, but the politics around it?
