U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a major executive order directing the federal government to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, marking one of the most significant shifts in American drug policy in decades. The order instructs Attorney General Pam Bondi to fast-track marijuana’s move from Schedule I to Schedule III under the DEA, dramatically easing restrictions on scientific and medical research.

While Trump emphasized that the move does not legalize recreational marijuana, it opens the door to expanded studies, medical innovation, and regulatory reform. The decision builds on unfinished efforts from the Biden administration and reflects growing pressure from states that have already legalized marijuana, highlighting a widening gap between state and federal law.

00:00Today I'm pleased to announce that I will be signing an executive order to reschedule marijuana
00:04from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule 3 control substance with legitimate medical uses. We have
00:11people begging for me to do this, people that are in great pain. For decades this action has
00:21been requested by American patients suffering from extreme pain, incurable diseases, aggressive
00:27cancers, seizure disorders, neurological problems and more including numerous veterans
00:32with service-related injuries and older Americans who live with chronic medical problems that
00:38severely degrade their quality of life. Some GOP lawmakers have written to you in recent
00:43days saying they're concerned this executive order could normalize drug use for youth.
00:47How would you respond to them? You're talking about this particular today? Well, I think
00:51I'd let one of the doctors respond to it because they could do it a lot better than me, but
00:55I can only tell you that when you see polls of 82% of the people want this, when I have
01:01friends that are really, really sick and they've gone through, I guess you could say, fortunately
01:06I don't want to become too involved in it because I don't want it happening, but these are people
01:11that really know what's going on. Very smart people. This is one of the most successful
01:14people in the country and a very brilliant guy and when they go through this horrible ordeal of cancer or other things and
01:25they realize that this is something that makes them feel better without all of the side effects of some of the drugs
01:32where you're just totally knocked out and out of it. But I'd like to have one of the doctors maybe respond because you people do it better than anybody.
01:39I'm happy to respond. I mean, and my answer is we have had cannabis scheduled for how long and it hasn't
01:46protect neither the adolescents nor the adults. We have 20 million people in the United States with a cannabis juice disorder.
01:52This is not legalizing it. It's making it easier to do research so that we can use it when it is indicated and
02:00optimally.
02:01So it's also a big part of this is research. In other words, you'll now have a much larger sample
02:08and you'll be able to see if it's as good as many people say it is. I mean, people say it is
02:13beyond good and you'll be able to find that out now.
