00:00As tensions flare between Thailand and Cambodia, questions are also rising about the durability of the recent ceasefire.
00:08Dr. Rostum Bansu from Prince of Songkla University says reaching an agreement is only the first step.
00:14The more vital part, according to him, is to ensure that the root causes of the conflict are addressed for lasting peace.
00:23Of course, both parties of conflict have their own narrative on the root of the conflict.
00:30But for the Thailand side, one root of the conflict is that Cambodia have not stopped in a trade to Thailand's no security, especially the landmine that they plant, they laid down on the border.
00:46And if ASEAN as a platform can put a pressure toward Cambodia to act or to practice, to create or to resolve this landmine or take it away or whatever,
01:10or whatever, you know, that can, can maybe, can, some point can resolve this conflict, yes.
01:22And also, I think we, I observed myself that Prime Minister Anwar, you know, he played a very important role, but for the other ASEAN countries, we, we, we don't observe, you know, much more united, you know, voice toward these conflicts or pressure, you know, toward these conflicts, yes.
01:49I think Malaysia need, you know, need to focus on, you know, the, the, the threat that Thailand or both parties, you know, perceive, you know, okay, we can have a ceasefire agreement.
02:08But if we reach the ceasefire agreement, but the root of conflict, you know, did not resolve, so we can expect that in the near future, you know, the conflicts of the violent conflict, you know, will, will come up again.
02:23So whenever we, we want to reach the ceasefire, we need to, to be sure that those root cause of the conflicts, of what party of conflict are, you know, are more focused or are taken care by, by the, by negotiation platform.
02:48And also, I think ASEAN may work together, not only ASEAN itself, but work together with those superpowers or another regional operation like EU, you know, to, to try to resolve this conflict.
