00:00I need officer assistance with the possible kidnapping and murder.
00:11Is somebody dead in that house?
00:12Yes.
00:14Do not come out of that room, okay?
00:16My focus were those kids.
00:18I could feel it through the phone line.
00:20They were absolutely terrified.
00:23Ma'am, can you get up?
00:24I need an officer!
00:27One, don't like me.
00:28You know, he's laying down next to the seat.
00:30I felt like it looks unconscious.
00:33It could be a matter of life and death.
00:35It's going to be tight!
00:41Yeah, I'm dropping! Come outside!
00:58Hey, it's Rachel with State.
01:03Hey, 3532. He is off-duty right now.
01:07Someone came up to his door knocking on it advising that they need officer assistance with the possible kidnapping and a murder.
01:16with the possible kidnapping and murder.
01:22They said the corner of Stinson and James.
01:25Wait, what was that last location?
01:29Stinson Avenue and James Avenue.
01:32Wait, what's going on here, Rob?
01:34An off-duty state trooper has just called 911,
01:38saying a distressed woman has seen a dead body in a house
01:41and claims another woman is still trapped inside.
01:46Deputy Jeff Fentress is nearby.
01:49We respond to everything as it's real.
01:52That's our job.
01:53But going to a run like that is something you don't think
01:57is ever going to happen in your hometown.
01:59So you tense up and you get ready to go to work.
02:08We're standing outside the street on Stinson,
02:10watching the house.
02:11Wait for the people to get here.
02:12Also on scene is Officer Edward Kitzinger.
02:23The atmosphere of the officers at this time
02:26was just to make sure to get in good positions
02:29and to have somebody watching every angle of the house.
02:36Okay, where are you?
02:37I'm on the northwest corner.
02:40As units surround the suspect's house...
02:42I'm sitting on the back side of this house on the side
02:45to watch the back.
02:48Yeah, we got it.
02:50Detective Oakley arrives at the front
02:52and locates the woman who first alerted the police.
02:57What's your name?
02:58My name's Cynthia.
02:59Cynthia, what's going on here?
03:01I was hanging out with this girl
03:03that I was supposed to be working with
03:04and she brought me over here to help her clean her house.
03:07Heidi, Heidi Hammond is her name.
03:10I ask you a question.
03:11Let's be straight up with me.
03:12Have you guys been using drugs in the house?
03:14It's not to get you in trouble.
03:15I have not.
03:17We don't know at that time
03:18if she's involved in this situation.
03:20Just because she's rambling,
03:21that could be her body's way of processing it
03:24as a victim or as an offender.
03:26Okay, so what happened?
03:28And then he invited me to the back room
03:30to sit down and eat.
03:31Who did?
03:32That Carrie guy.
03:34I was going to sit down to eat the pizza.
03:37And it was an account.
03:40Like, I felt hair when I went to sit down.
03:43It felt funny to sit down
03:44and then I went like that.
03:45My hand slipped.
03:46It looks like a blade came off.
03:50Do what?
03:51Say it with me.
03:52Oh, f***ing head came out with me.
03:54Came out of what?
03:55The blanket.
03:59She sat down on what she thought
04:01was a rolled-up rug
04:02that she soon found out
04:04was a deceased individual.
04:08It's shocking.
04:09And it is like, okay,
04:11is she telling the truth?
04:13You know?
04:13I mean, it doesn't sound believable at first,
04:16but she seems like she is in a panic,
04:18but you don't know if it's real or not.
04:21They just act like everything was just a normal day.
04:24Carrie lives here.
04:26The boy.
04:26Yeah.
04:27He's a guy.
04:27Which is Heidi's boyfriend.
04:28Heidi's boyfriend.
04:29He's the one that was the aggressor.
04:31He's the one that had the gun.
04:32He's the one that had the baseball bat.
04:34What gun?
04:35You didn't say anything about a gun or a baseball bat?
04:36There was a male inside.
04:40We knew who he was,
04:43that he was possibly armed with a weapon,
04:46and that he had already killed one person.
04:48So in my mind,
04:52I'm thinking, like,
04:54is there anybody else that's in the house
04:55that we need to be able to get out of this house?
05:00Then I heard that girl yelling,
05:02just let me pee.
05:03Just let me pee.
05:06Cynthia said that there was another female
05:09that was in the back room
05:10that was crying and asking her to use the restroom.
05:13She's panicking.
05:15She's hyper.
05:16She's almost in disbelief.
05:19I really didn't know what to think at that point.
05:22I knew that we had to get her out of the house.
05:26As Cynthia is taken away from the scene,
05:29officers spot some movement outside the house.
05:36On the corner, the White House,
05:37the big White House,
05:38there's someone in that van.
05:40Hey!
05:41Step out!
05:42Come on, son!
05:46An officer saw a female next to the house,
05:49in between the house and a minivan.
05:52We didn't know who she was at the time.
05:56Show me your hands.
05:57Freeze!
05:58Yeah, show me your hands.
05:59Step out of the vehicle.
06:01Someone watch in the back of that house.
06:03Yep, I've got eyes on the back.
06:05I've got eyes on this lady.
06:07See my flashlight?
06:08Come to this flashlight right here.
06:10Turn around.
06:19Come here.
06:23After initially hiding from police,
06:26the woman begins to follow instructions.
06:28But officers are suspicious.
06:32I've got this girl in Kosky.
06:33Who else is in that van?
06:35Over here.
06:37Is she a suspect?
06:38Is she a victim?
06:40We're treating anybody that's near the house
06:42as a suspect until we know different.
06:45Please, I'm over here.
06:46You've got to relax a minute.
06:49What are you talking to?
06:51Come on.
06:51Come over here.
06:52Please, please, please.
06:53Please get in there.
06:54What have you been there?
06:58He's gonna...
06:58He's staying...
06:59Oh, my God.
07:00Who?
07:01What's your name?
07:02Heidi.
07:04Oh, God.
07:05Heidi what?
07:05Heidi.
07:06Heidi.
07:06Heidi, when she came over to the area
07:10where I was with Cynthia,
07:12she was very, very emotional,
07:14but we wouldn't allow them
07:16to get close to each other.
07:17One thing we do as police officers
07:19is we separate witnesses
07:20so that their stories are not tainted.
07:24Is somebody dead in that house?
07:25Yes.
07:28I need to get away from you.
07:30Listen to me for a second.
07:31Take a breath.
07:32Take a breath.
07:32I need to know who is in that house.
07:34There is a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old.
07:39I had a very young daughter,
07:41and my wife was expecting
07:42our second daughter.
07:45When I heard that there were kids
07:46in the home,
07:47I just imagined my kids
07:51in a situation like this,
07:54and my focus were those kids.
07:58Who was supposedly dead?
08:00I don't, um, I don't know his name.
08:03And his girlfriend,
08:03and he can't be,
08:04like, he can't be right there.
08:07He was like...
08:08Carrie Hammond's?
08:10Yes, he's been terrorizing me.
08:12My ex-pat, he won't leave me alone.
08:15Carrie Hammond is a serial offender
08:18with a rap sheet including
08:19drug charges and battery.
08:22Is there any other adults
08:23in that house right now?
08:24There is.
08:25Alive?
08:25Well, I don't know now.
08:27I don't know where she...
08:27Jason Harvey, I think it's been...
08:29Carrie Hammond is a monster.
08:31Jason Harvey's in the house.
08:32Along with the two children,
08:37officers believe there are
08:38three adults also in the house.
08:41Jason Harvey, the children's father,
08:44a woman who is trapped,
08:46and Carrie Hammond,
08:47the armed suspect.
08:49Somebody came out the front door
08:50and went back in when they saw us.
08:52I don't want to go with you.
08:53With children inside,
08:58officers can't risk entering the house.
09:02This has turned into
09:03a barricaded gunman situation.
09:06We're going to take our time
09:07and slowly approach this.
09:10You want to find a way
09:11to get the kids out of the house,
09:12but you also don't want them
09:13coming down the steps.
09:16Does anybody have a car
09:17and a spot where they can get a PA?
09:19And just start calling people out.
09:24Come to the door now!
09:28We started by calling
09:30on the intercom system
09:32to have Carrie come out of the house.
09:34Tell me your hands!
09:36Keep your hands up!
09:36Hands up!
09:41The left floor!
09:42Keep your hands up!
09:44Keep your hands up!
09:47Walk backwards!
09:48You're my boy!
09:49Keep walking backwards!
09:51A male suddenly exits
09:52the front door of the house,
09:54and officers don't know
09:55if he is a victim
09:56or the suspect.
09:58Keep walking!
09:59Keep walking!
10:00Take steps back!
10:02I'm assuming this is the male.
10:04Down to your knees!
10:06There's at least
10:07one more female in there.
10:09He went down to his knees
10:10and put his hands
10:11on top of his head,
10:12and I secured him in handcuffs
10:13and pulled him back
10:14to the rear of the squad car.
10:19What's going on in there?
10:22Got any weapons on you?
10:23No.
10:24Anybody?
10:24I need a gun!
10:25Bring them on!
10:26Justice, the front door!
10:27I'm out!
10:30I looked at him,
10:31and you could see
10:32the fear in his eyes.
10:34Knowing that
10:35he just left his kids
10:37inside
10:38a home
10:40to where he knew
10:42absolute horror
10:45was inside.
10:46is this your house?
10:57Yes.
10:57Okay.
10:58All right.
10:58I know.
11:00With his children
11:01locked in the upstairs apartment
11:03and the armed suspect
11:05just downstairs,
11:06the father of two
11:07snuck out of the house
11:09to get help.
11:10he knew that
11:11that was his kid's
11:12best chance
11:13to make it out alive
11:15is for him to come out
11:16and tell us
11:18what's going on
11:19and where they're at.
11:21We've got movement
11:22on the top floor.
11:24West side of the road
11:25on the second floor.
11:28The father
11:28had told us
11:30that he had
11:31teenagers upstairs
11:32and that they lived
11:34separate from
11:35the suspects
11:36downstairs.
11:38There's a female
11:39up here
11:39in that top window.
11:40Keep going.
11:41Keep going, man.
11:42The father
11:43hands his phone
11:44to Deputy Fentress
11:45to make contact
11:46with his children
11:47inside the house.
11:50Can you hear me?
11:51We're getting on the phone
11:51with him
11:52and telling him
11:52to stay put
11:53to make sure
11:53they're all right.
11:55How do I make this call?
11:57Down here at the bottom
11:58where it says
11:58call with this phone.
11:59Hey, this is Deputy Fentress.
12:12Everything's okay.
12:13I need you to stay upstairs,
12:14okay?
12:14You understand?
12:16You're upstairs
12:16in your room, okay?
12:18Do not come out
12:19of that room, okay?
12:20It's very important
12:20that you don't come
12:21out of that room, okay?
12:23We have your dad.
12:24He's fine.
12:25Everybody's okay.
12:27I could hear it
12:28and I could feel it
12:29through the phone line.
12:32They were absolutely terrified.
12:36Guys, just for information,
12:38the two kids
12:39are in the top floor
12:40Southwest room
12:41where the light
12:43is off in the window.
12:45He trusted me
12:46with talking to his kids
12:47and that's something
12:49I'll never forget.
12:53It would be nice
12:54to the kids upstairs.
12:55Everybody make sure
12:56you got good cover.
12:57Worst case scenario
12:59is the suspect
13:01harms the kids.
13:05They get caught
13:08in crossfire
13:09if anything was to happen.
13:11So it's definitely
13:13nerve-wracking
13:13knowing that you have
13:15them upstairs.
13:17We do have lights
13:19on the back
13:19upstairs on the 4th floor.
13:21There's a 14-year-old
13:22and a 16-year-old
13:22in there.
13:23There's a subject
13:24in there
13:24named Carrie
13:25that does have a gun
13:26inside the house.
13:33Come out now
13:34with your hands up!
13:35Hands up!
13:36Come out now!
13:38Do not reach down
13:39there again!
13:41I don't know
13:41if he keeps reaching
13:42down to the right
13:43of the door, though.
13:43From where I was
13:46standing at the
13:47adjacent house,
13:48I could see
13:49through the front door
13:50and I saw
13:51Carrie Hammond
13:52walking front
13:53near the door
13:55and then he would
13:56retreat back
13:58to where I couldn't see
13:59and he did this
13:59several times.
14:01One time,
14:02I noticed him
14:03placing the item
14:03down by the front door.
14:05Show us your hands, man!
14:07Get good cover, guys.
14:08I'm thinking,
14:10is this a gun?
14:12Is he strategically
14:13placing weapons
14:14inside the house
14:15in case we do come in?
14:17After more
14:18than 20 minutes,
14:20the suspect
14:20shows no sign
14:22of coming out.
14:23As time
14:24is going on,
14:26tensions are arising.
14:29It was unusual
14:29for me to see him
14:31come to the door
14:32and then retreat back.
14:35I didn't know
14:35what was going on.
14:36His options are
14:38harming the people
14:39inside.
14:40He could harm himself
14:42or he could come out
14:44and potentially
14:44try to harm officers
14:46or just give himself up.
14:54Carrie, come out
14:56with your hands
14:56and hands!
14:58Hands up!
15:03Shots fired.
15:03Shots fired.
15:04Stop, stop.
15:05Everybody,
15:05everybody relax.
15:06Everybody relax.
15:07He came straight out
15:08with the both hands
15:09straight out.
15:10Good over here.
15:12There's two kids
15:13upstairs.
15:13Be advised.
15:16Officers fired upon Carrie.
15:18Multiple bursts
15:19and then silenced.
15:25As he come out
15:27and he's got his arms
15:28out like he's
15:30holding a handgun,
15:32the threat was there
15:33and he was fired
15:35and he was fired upon.
15:36I believe in his mind
15:38he knew that
15:38he was caught.
15:41Carrie Hammond
15:43is declared dead
15:44at the scene.
15:45With the suspect down,
15:47officers move
15:48to make entry
15:49to the house.
15:51Over your shoulder,
15:51over your shoulder.
15:53The whole time
15:54we're on the perimeter
15:56of this residence,
15:57is you're going
15:59through your mind.
16:01What's this home
16:02like inside?
16:04How can we
16:05safely and quickly
16:07go search
16:08for people
16:09who need help?
16:10Let's move up
16:11on the door.
16:13You good?
16:13Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.
16:16Yep.
16:17Okay.
16:18I need a couple more.
16:19Yeah, you stay there
16:22and watch your upper
16:22windows, Ox.
16:25Police, garbage,
16:26you're in the house.
16:27We know.
16:29All right, you guys ready?
16:30Kids are upstairs.
16:31On you.
16:32Far, south, west.
16:37I've got a long haul
16:38and multiple doors.
16:40Ready?
16:41On you.
16:42Go.
16:42Go, go, go.
16:43I've got the long haul.
16:45And I can pause it.
16:46I can pause it.
16:47You guys ready?
16:49Okay.
16:54Clear.
16:55Go, go, go.
16:57Bedroom right here.
16:59It's a strange feeling
17:00to know that someone
17:02is possibly deceased
17:03in this room
17:04that you're in.
17:06You can't do anything
17:07right at that moment
17:08because you still have
17:09the rest of the house
17:10to clear and make safe.
17:13Stairs to the right.
17:15Okay.
17:15Hey, cover the stairs.
17:17I'm going to the way.
17:18Ready?
17:18Go.
17:18You step out.
17:19Cover.
17:20Cover, cover, cover, cover, cover.
17:23Need one.
17:24Need one.
17:25In there, in there, in there.
17:28Back, dogs.
17:31Hold on.
17:31We've got another room
17:32back here.
17:38Get back.
17:44Ma'am?
17:45Ma'am?
17:45Can you get up?
17:47I need it all, officer.
17:55Move, move, move.
17:56Come in.
17:57Where are you at?
17:58Back here, back here.
17:59I got a female down
18:00and I got blood.
18:02Somebody get with her.
18:03Make contact.
18:04Where are you at?
18:06We've got one female
18:07in the house.
18:08What's your name?
18:09I'm in there.
18:10I got blood on you.
18:14He beat me with a baseball bat.
18:16Who did?
18:17Who beat you with a baseball bat?
18:19I don't know.
18:19I don't know.
18:20What's his name?
18:20I don't know.
18:21Okay.
18:22Okay.
18:24Her head's bleeding.
18:27There's blood on the sheets.
18:31There's dog feces on the floor.
18:34And when I looked at her,
18:40she was so fearful.
18:44She did not want me to get close to her.
18:47She didn't want to see any person.
18:53Before I took her off the bed,
18:54I noticed that her hands were tied
18:57by some type of rope.
19:03But I knew after seeing the wounds on her head
19:05that we had to get her medical treatment
19:07as soon as we could.
19:10Police department,
19:11you're out there.
19:11Get yourself down now.
19:13Guys, you have to remember
19:14what you have to do.
19:16Police department,
19:17if you're upstairs,
19:18let yourself down now.
19:23Keep coming down.
19:24Come out to the stairs.
19:27You're okay.
19:28Come downstairs.
19:28Hands up.
19:31Hands up.
19:32Keep coming.
19:32You're good.
19:33Watch your gun.
19:33Watch your gun.
19:34Watch your gun.
19:34Come on, dude.
19:35Come on, guys.
19:36Come on out.
19:36Keep up to me, guys.
19:37Make up.
19:38Guys, come on.
19:38Make up.
19:39When I first saw the kids,
19:42they were walking.
19:43They were alive.
19:45They weren't hurt.
19:46A lot of weight lifted off my shoulders.
19:50But I was just relieved
19:51to get the kids out of the house.
19:54Guys, just look to the right.
19:55Focus on the right.
19:56Focus on the right.
19:58What's happening?
20:00Focus on the right.
20:10The female victim, Amanda,
20:12is taken to the hospital.
20:13Go.
20:14I suppose we have body
20:15under all this.
20:16Where?
20:17Right here.
20:17Okay.
20:18Hey, kids, you got gloves?
20:19You want to just kind of pull
20:20the cover's back
20:21on body cam here?
20:22Open it.
20:27We got a body.
20:32The body retrieved
20:34is that of Timothy Ivey,
20:36Amanda's boyfriend.
20:40Mail?
20:40Mail.
20:41Looks like it.
20:42He's got raving orders.
20:42No, not for this body.
20:46After the house was cleared,
20:48a female officer responded
20:49to the scene,
20:50and we had the female officer
20:52check Heidi.
20:55What's in your pants?
20:57Is there a gun in your pants?
20:58I said I grabbed the gate.
21:00Don't move.
21:02Don't move.
21:03Why are you...
21:04That's when the female officer
21:11found a gun on Heidi.
21:16Yeah, it's loaded.
21:17It's not my gun.
21:19The fact that she didn't tell us
21:20she had a gun
21:21made us believe that she maybe
21:23is trying to hide something.
21:25So we have to figure out,
21:27is Carrie the only suspect
21:29in this,
21:29or is Heidi involved?
21:30Detective Stephen Toney
21:35interviews Heidi
21:36back at the police station.
21:38So you guys engaged
21:40in some form of sexual activity
21:42between you, Amanda, and Tim?
21:44Yeah.
21:44Right?
21:45Mm-hmm.
21:45Okay.
21:46What happened when Carrie showed up?
21:48He was very mad.
21:50He came in,
21:50he was young,
21:51and just, you know,
21:52he had hit him,
21:53he had hit her,
21:53and he, um...
21:55Hands, fists?
21:57He was using different things.
21:58Weapons?
21:59Yeah.
21:59I mean, what...
22:00What kind of weapons did he use?
22:03You said he used weapons
22:04and all that.
22:05Okay.
22:06And he...
22:07Oh, on both of them?
22:08Yeah.
22:08Okay.
22:08Um...
22:09Okay, when Carrie,
22:12um,
22:14done that to that man, okay?
22:15I was gone.
22:16Done what to that man?
22:17Killed him.
22:19Amanda had met Heidi.
22:21They decided to get together.
22:22They went to Heidi's house,
22:24met her there,
22:25spent time together drinking.
22:27They did drugs.
22:28They began having sex together.
22:31Carrie came into the house
22:33while Amanda and Tim and Heidi
22:35are having sex together,
22:37and Carrie comes in
22:39and becomes just enraged
22:40and picks up a bat
22:42and starts beating Tim,
22:43starts beating Amanda.
22:46Did you ever do anything
22:47to try to stop him
22:48when he was hitting them
22:49with the bat and stuff?
22:50Yes.
22:50Yes, I...
22:51When he...
22:52I was the whole plan
22:53of trying to protect them.
22:56Like, he...
22:56He was...
22:57Detective Tony compares Heidi's story
23:02to the one he got
23:04from the victim, Amanda.
23:06Learning from Amanda that night
23:08what happened to her,
23:09she described it very vividly
23:11in terms of the same way
23:12as Heidi.
23:15But there was also
23:16the big difference
23:17in...
23:17in Heidi's
23:18and Amanda's interview.
23:24Amanda said
23:24she felt someone
23:25grab her
23:26by the back of her hair
23:27and yank her
23:28to the floor.
23:30And when she looked up,
23:31she saw Heidi
23:32pointing a gun
23:33in her face
23:34telling her
23:35that she's going
23:36to do whatever...
23:37whatever we tell you
23:38to do
23:39is what Heidi told her
23:40in that moment.
23:47So there's some things
23:48that Amanda told me
23:50that don't exactly line up
23:52with what you're telling me.
23:53About what?
23:55You helped
23:55restrain her.
23:58You helped tape up Tim.
23:59You encouraged him
24:00while he was raping her.
24:02Amanda, break back!
24:03I didn't hear my
24:04felt.
24:05I believe that you
24:06had that gun in there
24:07and made the threats
24:08that they were both
24:09going to die.
24:10I believe her
24:11when she tells me
24:13that you had
24:15a much bigger part
24:16in all of this
24:16than what you've told me.
24:18Okay, as I found
24:20an opportunity
24:20to keep myself alive,
24:22okay?
24:24It's called survival.
24:26Okay, maybe I didn't
24:26make the best decisions
24:27but I never
24:28wanted no part of that.
24:30100%
24:31you are completely
24:32as responsible.
24:33That's what you
24:33think?
24:34Absolutely,
24:35that's what I think.
24:36That's what I know
24:37based on all the evidence
24:38that we have.
24:41By the end
24:42of that interview,
24:43I knew that Heidi
24:44was telling me
24:44a lot of lies.
24:47Heidi was a suspect
24:48in this case.
24:49She was not
24:50a victim
24:51as the way
24:51she kind of
24:52made herself out
24:53to be
24:53when we initially
24:54found her,
24:54but she was
24:55very much involved
24:56in the crimes
24:58that took place
24:58in that house.
25:00Amanda was raped
25:02multiple times
25:02throughout the day.
25:05Heidi was
25:06coaching Carrie
25:07on what he should
25:08do to her
25:09and how he should
25:09do those things
25:10to her.
25:12Heidi never
25:12talked about
25:13Cynthia in terms
25:15of being involved
25:15in what happened
25:16in that house.
25:17She basically
25:18had invited Cynthia
25:19over to help
25:20her clean.
25:21If Cynthia
25:22hadn't have escaped,
25:23I think there's
25:24probably a good
25:24chance that
25:25Tim, Amanda,
25:27and Cynthia
25:28could have all
25:28been killed
25:29that day.
25:30Heidi Carter
25:31is charged
25:32with aiding,
25:33inducing,
25:34or causing
25:34rape and murder.
25:36She is sentenced
25:37to the maximum
25:38penalty of 65
25:39years in prison.
25:43One thing
25:44that I've always
25:44tried to do
25:45is we always
25:46have to expect
25:47the worst.
25:49A couple days
25:50later,
25:50we met up
25:51and we talked
25:52about it.
25:53Is anybody
25:54struggling
25:54with anything?
25:57To see
25:58something this
25:59brutal
26:00and something
26:01of this nature,
26:02it's something
26:03that sticks
26:03in your head
26:04and it still
26:06sticks into my
26:06head to this
26:07day.
26:09It's not
26:10something
26:11people should
26:12have to see.
26:23question.
26:31One motor
26:3113 central.
26:32Go ahead.
26:33Just signal
26:3414.
26:34There is a boat
26:35doing circles
26:36right next to the
26:38shore.
26:39Central one up
26:39to 20.
26:4020.
26:41Can you take a look
26:42at this
26:42incident?
26:43It also got sent over to the fireside.
26:46The call is a boat that's going, it seems to be out of control,
26:51just running in circles in Lake Diaz.
26:54So I called Deputy Seltzer and told him,
26:57hey, grab one of the boats, and I'll meet you there.
27:02Our citizen on patrol who called it in
27:05could not see if anybody was in the boat at the time.
27:08Lake Diaz, it's surrounded completely by trees.
27:13It's just a little bit of water.
27:15It's just a little bit of water.
27:17It's just a little bit of water in the boat at the time.
27:20One river, 10 seconds.
27:22Good.
27:23Does anybody ask for air one to check it yet?
27:26Air one's been around.
27:27Yeah.
27:33Lake Diaz, it's surrounded completely by trees.
27:37There's gators there.
27:39There's logs in the water.
28:02Somebody needs our help, and we need to do it fast.
28:05Once we knew that there was somebody on board not responding to our helicopter,
28:22we need to do it fast.
28:23Now things get amped up a little bit.
28:25Time is now of an essence.
28:27We don't just have a runaway boat going in circles.
28:29How big of a boat is it?
28:31It's probably an 18-foot aluminum boat.
28:37Okay, perfect.
28:38Is it somebody that was drunk and passed out?
28:48Is it somebody that had a medical emergency, coma, heat stroke?
28:54Did they have a heart attack?
28:56I don't know what medical conditions he's suffering from.
29:01It could be a matter of life and death.
29:03Hey, we're seeing movement on the boat.
29:06He's moving his arm.
29:08They're trying to get on their PA on the helicopter, calling, hey, if you can hear me, give us a sign.
29:17Tell us something.
29:18There was no sign from that patient on board.
29:21I noticed a lot of emergency vehicles already on scene, patrol deputies, fire department was there, EVAC.
29:37Everybody, unfortunately, is kind of standing around because I'm the one coming with the boat to get us out there.
29:44Uh, fire.
29:45Uh, probably or maybe Brody.
29:46Yeah, Brody's probably coming.
29:47Sergeant Brody Hughes jumps on board to assist with the rescue.
29:48All right, let's go stop him, Matt.
29:49Can we bring those fenders in here a second?
29:52We want to try to hook it or pull up a side?
30:05Do you want to try to hook it or pull up beside it?
30:19I'll be honest with you.
30:20I think the better thing is going to be just to push it into the shore.
30:23If you can get into it and push it into the shore, I think we'll be better off.
30:30I also need medical personnel.
30:32John Kipp was able to get on board.
30:36John is also familiar with boating.
30:39So as we're approaching the boat, we're trying to come up with a game plan.
30:43We're trying to just make an initial assessment on what type of boat it is,
30:47what kind of throttle it's got, where's the victim at inside the boat, what's his position.
30:50The good thing is he was waving his hands and moving around,
30:53so maybe he's just falling and he can't get up.
30:55We were looking to see how can we stop this boat.
31:04Is there something we can grab?
31:06Can we yank a kill switch or yank the throttle?
31:11So you don't want the numbers out?
31:13Well, in a second I will, yes.
31:15Because what I'm going to try and do is go along the outside of him.
31:20Those guys train to work close quarters boating at speed.
31:24Those guys are some of the best boat operators.
31:26I need everybody to hold on because I'm going to do a circle around his to the outside of him.
31:31Outlet's drive.
31:33Don't help.
31:33One must be skimming.
31:35I'm at five and a half feet-ish.
31:37Hold on.
31:39The problem was is that
32:09the unconscious patient, his leg was on the throttle.
32:13So now we couldn't help pull the throttle back to get that boat stopped.
32:20Hey, we can't wait to get this one with the hook.
32:24All right.
32:24Hold on.
32:25Matt, why did you not even have just pushed him into the shore?
32:29Well, I don't know if I'm going to be able to correct his steering
32:32because it's so hard cranked over.
32:35But give me a second and I'll try.
32:37The only, I mean, we got that other big log right there.
32:41We're not wearing a PFD, so we put him in the water.
32:42He's going to be cocky.
32:43Yeah, we've got to get a quick effort.
32:54Can you get on the inside of him?
32:56Yeah.
32:57But it's going to be tight.
32:58I'm okay with tight.
33:01If you put him on the inside, you're going to step out.
33:03Hold on.
33:05Hold on.
33:13Get closer to the back.
33:16Hold on.
33:16Hold on.
33:17Hold on.
33:17Hold on.
33:17It's all about timing.
33:19I don't want to hit the boat and knock him overboard.
33:22He's going to go in here in a second.
33:47There's a lot of risk in that.
33:58He causes that boat to overturn, and the boat comes back around and hits him with the prop.
34:06At that point, he's certainly going to die.
34:08It was working out very, very well.
34:20Our waves were pushing the boat closer to shore.
34:24We're hoping that the engine will hit a log under the water.
34:29It'll hit sand.
34:30It'll hit shoreline and disable it.
34:32But it started to bounce off the land.
34:45It started to bounce off the shore and come back out.
34:48We're going to walk that boat.
34:53It takes a few longer, so I'll just fly some of you.
34:56Get back.
34:57Get back.
34:57Get back.
34:58Get back!
35:02The next time he comes up right here, just go up and force it into the woods.
35:14Let him go around again, and as he comes around, let's just come up next to him and push him up to that tree.
35:19I'm not getting a good read right now.
35:21Hold on.
35:21I started hitting bottom with my engine.
35:36We're running out of options.
35:40You just did it again.
35:42I can get in.
35:42You got to get ready, though.
35:44I'm just letting you know.
35:45Hold on.
35:47Eventually, my brain was like, we're probably going to have to get on the boat.
35:51And I'm mentally, like, just seeing, like, if I were to jump, hey, where would the perfect timing be?
35:58But if I fall in the water and get run over by a boat, not just one boat with a propeller in it, but now a bigger boat with a propeller in it, and you could end up, you could get killed.
36:07Hold on.
36:07Hold on.
36:08Hold on.
36:08Hold on.
36:09Hold on.
36:11Hold on.
36:13Hold on.
36:14Hold on.
36:15Hold on.
36:16Hold on.
36:17Hold on.
36:18Hold on.
36:19Hold on.
36:20Hold on.
36:21Hold on.
36:22Hold on.
36:23Hold on.
36:24Hold on.
36:25Hold on.
36:26Hold on.
36:27Hold on.
36:28Hold on.
36:29It bounced off the tree just perfect.
36:31It came around.
36:32Our boat was perfectly positioned.
36:34Parallel gunnels.
36:36The speed was right.
36:37Everything was perfect.
36:38Never thought about in my life that I would jump off of a boat onto another boat to stop it.
36:44The boat drifts right into the tree that we tried to stop it into earlier and then just assess the patient.
36:54Hey, just in case, hey, in case that boat don't believe it, we'll transfer it.
37:01Yeah.
37:02Hey, we're going to take him by boat back over there.
37:05Hey.
37:06Is that a boat?
37:07Is that a boat?
37:08No.
37:09Is that a boat?
37:10Oh, yeah.
37:11Is that a boat?
37:12Oh, yeah.
37:13Is that a boat?
37:14Oh, yeah.
37:15Here.
37:16It's a boat off.
37:17Yeah, here.
37:18Go.
37:19Go to the street.
37:20I see it.
37:21good yeah we're good just eyes on him i thought he was deceased
37:27there was a black diabetes kit that we carry on our fire trucks to check your
37:31sugar for your bgl when it's low or high this might be the what's caused his medical emergency

38:13yeah they're good we got medics at the beach taking security coming up
38:18hey you can breathe for me all right
38:24when you're a diabetic and your sugar goes really low you become unresponsive and once it gets low
38:30enough to come unresponsive your body starts shutting down and once it gets low enough you
38:36eventually pass away he actually had a pulse and he was breathing he had shallow shallow respirations
38:43but he was breathing hey he's gonna breathe for me all right we need to get him off the water and
38:51into an environment where we can treat the patient
38:58can you hear me
39:03dirt in that corner and then the right left here everything else is not
39:06you're ready
39:13ready how about three uh

40:36going to make a good recovery we did something really good that day
40:39who knows how long he would have been out there going in circles before his boat either capsized and
40:48he went under or whatever the good lord put the right people in the right place to make a difference
40:54that day and let that gentleman live to see another day i could go the rest of my career and never know
