11:46So I went running over, and they told me I had to stay back, and I said, I can't.
12:16So I went down to his right foot, where I sat on the grass.

12:46I knew he got stabbed, but I didn't know until I looked at him, that it was directly in the heart.

13:13As medics battle to save Isaac's life, officers are still trying to find the assailant.
13:23I was near a witness that had a picture on his phone of the potential suspect.

16:19The suspect, Nicolai Mew, is taken to the St. Croix County Jail for questioning.
16:29One of my first calls was to Lieutenant Hart.
16:33She has a unique ability when it comes to these interviews.

16:49I had no idea what type of person I was going to enter the room and encounter.
16:56I did know at that point that five individuals had been stabbed.
17:02The gravity of that was not lost on me.
17:04I don't know exactly what happened.
17:06I just don't, I can't talk about it.
17:09I need to go one step at a time.
17:11Okay, we have someone in custody, but I think there's always the question, do we have the
17:17right person?

17:20So, I lost his phone.
17:23His phone was in the floor, so he says, well, let's go look for it.
17:27So, I put my smartphone on, and I looked, and these guys found something, and they were talking
17:31about it, and I said, okay.

17:35I went over, and I said, did you guys find the phone?
17:38And if you did, can I see it?

17:41And they started calling me names.
17:43They got off of their tubes.
17:45They came at me.
17:46I said, all I need, and they were calling me all kinds of names, insulting me.
17:53I was so fearful.
17:55One wanted to put my pants down, and I grabbed onto them, and I don't know who that kid was,
18:02but he produced, he had a knife on him.
18:05And then there was another knife, a longer knife, that looked like a kitchen knife.
18:10When the kid attacked me, I took that from him.
18:13The kitchen knife or the other knife?
18:14No, the smaller knife.

18:16What did that knife look like?

18:18I don't even remember.
18:19It didn't make sense.
18:20The injuries, two knives, where are they?

18:31I didn't know that they attacked me, and I was in self-defense.

18:36When they started hitting me, and pointed a knife at me, and another kid pointed a knife,
18:42I thought that was it for me.
18:45Luckily, I took it from one of the young kids.

18:54I took his hand, and I bent it, and I poked him with his own hand.
18:59And then I went and swung like this.

19:04They attacked me.

19:09He did introduce a theory.
19:11Well, they must have been fighting with one another.

19:17And that wasn't really making sense for me at that point.
19:21I just knew there was more to the story than what he was giving me.
19:26The suspect is unaware of the conditions of the victims.
19:30So what happened?
19:32Four people went to the hospital with injuries.

19:50The victim who passed away is 17-year-old Isaac Schumann.
19:55Right when we walked into the door of the hospital, they asked us to come into a family room.
20:00And I said, no, I'm not going into a family room.
20:03Because I know what that means.
20:05So just bring me to him.
20:09But I knew.
20:14You know, his eyes were wide open.
20:20I still haven't made sense of it.
20:25The suspect had made the claim that he had knives pointed at him.
20:30We needed to either prove or disprove that theory.
20:36Our investigators had obtained a video taken by witnesses at the scene.

20:42As part of this investigation, and as a crucial piece of evidence, that video was truly the main linchpin.

20:57The video, it starts with Nick running up on that group of boys. And he doesn't say anything. He doesn't say that he's looking for a phone or what he's doing. He just charges up to that group and grabs onto their tubes. I don't know what Nick's aim was at this point. It seems to be bizarre behavior.

22:04the first time that you watched the video it appeared as though he had been pushed there
22:23was some sort of argument and it really wasn't until we slowed the video down when we saw
22:30firsthand how deliberate his acts were
22:39you see how deliberately he takes the knife out and holds it to his side
22:45he didn't shout at anybody get back I have a knife don't touch me I have a knife he
22:51held it there it seemed until he was ready to use it as he holds the knife out
22:58of sight Nick uses his other hand to hit the woman directly in front of him
23:03which causes the young men to come to her defense
23:10how determined and brash he looked when he stabbed AJ in the abdomen
23:21and then kept going was a complete contradiction to what he had told me about being scared and
23:37fearing for his safety and fearing for his life
23:40he stabbed two other people before he ultimately stabbed Isaac in the bottom of the heart
23:50while Isaac laid there dying others were severely injured for Nick to walk back to his inner tube
24:01watch responders the medics and the crowd work to save lives speaks a lot about his character
24:11his guilt and his disregard for life
24:14that look on his face to me man the outcome was not going to be good
24:22he could have walked away he had an entire river to walk he chose not to
24:31five people suffer serious stab wounds during the frenzied attack four of them survive
24:41Nicolai Mew stands trial at St. Croix County Circuit Court
24:53Nic pled not guilty to all of the charges and claimed that he acted in self-defense
24:59we had the video of my interview with him and we had the video that one of the boys took
25:06and he had to admit that he lied it is absolutely clear that he lied to me
25:12as to count one of the information Isaac Schumann the jury finds Nicolai Mew guilty of first degree
25:19reckless homicide as submitted he is found guilty of first degree reckless homicide
25:26four counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of battery the judge sentences
25:33it causes him to 20 years in prison and six years of extended supervision
25:37people talk about justice and I don't think this brought any justice
25:44that's it certainly didn't bring any justice to Isaac or to AJ O'Reilly
25:49you think about all the people that were on the river that day that can't unsee what happened
25:55there's no justice for any of them
25:57my heart shattered
26:03it's it's a struggle every day every single day
26:10I remember him as just being a kind soul from day one and loving
26:21I'll just remember everything about him just how smart he was and how helpful he was and
26:30how giving he was and and not just to me it everybody that knows him says that
26:37he's just I'll remember him as a mother's dream
26:45everything
26:47I miss everything
26:51I know Isaac can't come back to me physically
26:55but with his spirit I will always feel him with me
27:00a key component of why many of us get into the profession is to help victims seek justice
27:09incidents like this shake the foundation for everything we get into
27:16seeing those that are impacted families friends
27:21I am relieved that Nick cannot hurt anybody
27:26but Isaac's loss it'll forever be there

30:10Officers in Flagler County, Florida are responding to a call about a violent vehicle theft.
30:27So I start driving to the location of the call,
30:40which happens to be very near where I was when it came out.
30:49I see the vehicle driving very erratically, very fast.
30:57So I knew pretty much instantly that this was the vehicle that had just been stolen.

34:03As soon as I lost that visual contact with him, it immediately shifts from an active pursuit to setting a perimeter and making sure that he can't get out of the area that he's in.

34:15He had asked for air support, but the helicopter hadn't had a chance to get overhead. So we were working with limited visibility, so to speak.
34:27But there's also a new threat that has just entered the equation, which is the safety of people in the neighborhood.
34:36Now we have to worry about him potentially committing other carjacking, switching vehicles without us knowing about it.
34:42Officers are now on scene and speaking to the residents who first called police.

40:44with a suspended license.
40:46He is sentenced to 18 years in prison.
40:52In my time here, I would say that he's probably one of the more dangerous drivers that I've
40:58been directly involved in a pursuit with.
