00:00there's a magical place where the spirit of Christmas is all about woofs and walkies
00:13and even the grumpiest Grinch can't help but smile there's nothing better than having a dog
00:25at Christmas time dogs definitely love Christmas as much as we do we're a dedicated team try to find
00:35every dog a new family are we feeling festive yeah this could be the start
00:54of a really beautiful relationship this year we're all invited to some very furry festivities
01:02as woodgreens dogs steal the hearts of a new set of owners all they want for Christmas is someone
01:12to love and to love them in return
01:13do you think the dogs notice everyone's a bit giddy at Christmas so I think the dogs feed off that and
01:32they're probably like whoa my dogs have a stocking every year I'm 27 years old and I still wake my
01:38mom up at 6am look what Santa's got you I put lasagna on Christmas Day much to the horror of my family
01:47in fact my darn need refusing to come around for Christmas dinner
01:50Christmas Day gets to that point and it's like you can even watch a film you can have a two hour bath
01:59this is gonna make your Christmas isn't it yes what is a dog that sneezes what what do you call
02:21magician's dog a labracadabra dog hoping Santa is really gonna slay this year is the Johal family
02:31Merry Christmas Merry Christmas the party's arrived absolutely so are we feeling festive yeah so talk to
02:42me about your Christmas Day run me through your day we wake up and we get presents we go downstairs for
02:47presents first a few we don't have two presents each we have Christmas songs on oh yes a bit of
02:52caroling what was my caroling cattle wobbling we're not actually Christian but no but we still love
03:00Christmas we're all Sikh that's our religion really Christmas is not our thing huh I didn't know that
03:10Sikhs didn't celebrate Christmas we embrace everything we'll take everything on board and do all of it
03:15pick and choose the nice bits that we like do you want the lights on best Christmas jumper ever
03:24first weekend of December the Christmas tree arrives then it's full steam ahead then boom then we're in
03:30Christmas mode tinsel tinsels a bit tacky oh shots fired not on my tree I try to find new decorations
03:40every year but since the certain departments door closed down my life is very sad so obviously you're
03:53for a dog yes we are yeah potentially dad something so negative is he normally like this yes but listen I
04:04don't think we should keep you waiting any longer so make yourself come first someone will come down
04:08and have a chat with you good boy what would you like for Christmas good morning you're free to
04:24you good boy she's just really submissive and petrified we get stray dogs in all year round it seems more sad
04:40when they come in at Christmas because Christmas is a time of goodwill and they should be being loved
04:46not abandoned out on the streets some people find Christmas time really stressful and maybe sometimes
04:56people just can't cope and the dogs are the ones that pay the price hiya member of a public called our
05:10kennels and said that they'd found a pair of dogs tied to a post in an alleyway I popped down to come
05:20and pick them up can't find any my pictures that's where we are now the one on the right here looks
05:26pretty scared we'll take them down to the kennels cool no problem good you want picking up
05:32good let's go
05:40come on then I know it's a bit worrying when we get stray or abandoned dogs come in one of the first
05:56things we do is we give them a name Jenny this black one she seems quite happy Doria thinks a little bit
06:03more nervous she's been panting a bit kind of pasted in her kennel they're a little bit dirty and a bit matted
06:09some places a little bit skinnier there aren't you lady we can definitely get you looking better can't we
06:17if we get a pair of dogs we can't just take for granted that those dogs are best of friends so we have
06:24got to monitor them quite closely so that we can assess their needs going forward good girls yeah
06:30we'll leave them to settle yeah we'll leave them to settle in now well done ladies
06:45how are you Merry Christmas Merry Christmas I like your jumper oh I'm Angel Mel and I'm Sue I'm Sue
06:52Hi Angel hello Jessie I'm Paminda I'm Mia Mia I'm Arjun Arjun I'm Keira smiles all round I see
07:01have you as a family had a dog before no no they've had dogs 96 I I got a pedigree Rottweiler Leon
07:10I picked him out from the litter so I brought him home in like a shoe box this was one of the earlier
07:17pictures we had Leon and I taken they just had this great bond you know he made me my I made him
07:24and we just kind of were the same losing him was the hardest thing I've ever had to do what was Leon
07:32like don't stop it spoiled me for other dogs does that make sense hopefully okay why have you decided
07:42that now's the time for a dog because I've been wearing them down for eight years and they finally
07:48said yes the every Christmas my Christmas is dog clothes dog toys subtle hints like that
07:55Keira's commitment is quite impressive so I've been trying to put off here having a dog trying to protect
08:04her from that pain that comes from when you have to say goodbye maybe it's you know the dad in me to
08:11protect her maybe it's the Rottweiler in me trying to protect my daughter what breeds are you open to I
08:19like a cocker spaniels and breeds like like that because then you can do like agility with them you
08:25can go they like playing fetch you can train them do lots of things and they're like a good size okay
08:29so quite a clever dog then we're looking okay yeah so we need intelligence yes fizzy energy fizzy fizzy energy
08:37fun playful hyper hyper is a stretch so you want a fun fun buddy basically yeah right let's see if we
08:48can make your Christmas see you in a minute thank you family of five they're looking for something in
08:59the region of a perhaps a spaniel size so there's a little mushy know what you're getting with a
09:09three-year-old don't you yeah yeah yeah do you think Milo he's super fun or Luna hmm she's a labradoodle so I
09:22think that's gonna really match well with what Kira is looking for that spaniel-y energy she's not
09:30enjoying life in kennels she's just gone really withdrawn I've seen the other side to her her
09:37personality she's cheeky fizzy funny trick training that's brilliant in dogs who are a little bit more
09:44nervous so if that's something that Kira is looking to do hmm I think that will really really help Luna
09:51settle into a home I think she's a good little match I just don't think first impressions are gonna be great
10:00okay okay so we have found you the very pretty labradoodle
10:09her name is Luna now Luna's having a really hard time here in kennels and she's gone into a shell
10:27and done this she may struggle initially so in order not to overwhelm her what we'd like to do
10:38is start with you two it's essentially got the experience and it's your dog yeah would you like to
10:46meet Luna absolutely so just Kira and I get to decide whether they get to meet the dog oh I'll take
10:53dad and Kira you lead the way Kira mom he's gonna be so cute and her name is Luna Merry Christmas Luna
11:01come on then Luna's not always happy and goofy with Luna's previous home she wasn't able to go out of
11:10the house much and she didn't get many of the opportunities that sort of a young puppy would
11:14normally get which has resulted in her becoming more nervous and timid of new things we just need
11:21someone to be really patient with her and give her the time and the space to come out of her shell
11:25on her own terms when you're in her club she'll be your best friend forever excited you like the
11:40idea of the name Luna yeah I do I don't think there's anyone who's done her homework more than
11:46Kira has she's clued up on dogs she knows all the breeds she's got a lot of compassion oh my god it's
11:52so cute I took it across she couldn't stop smiling everywhere she looked because there's just dogs
12:00everywhere she came back so happy she could be our dog I want to try and get my dog to be able to do
12:11lots of tricks you're you're you're teaching this dog something you know you're you're showing this
12:16dog that you know you you can help it do stuff I'm helping the dog learn something new nice and brave
12:23she's looking all right positive mental attitude come on put it there so we could watch it like that
12:32eight years in the waiting eight years dad eight years good girl be brave
12:39oh god Oh my god
12:52Christmas oomies
12:59look at all this presents
13:01what film should we watch this year?
13:04Oh, that's potentially a winner.
13:07Oh, a great Christmas gift.
13:10This is Luna. Good girl.
13:13She can be a little bit nervous to start with.
13:16Oh, my God.
13:17Plucking up the courage to meet Ciara and her dad, Jessie,
13:20is one-year-old labradoodle, Luna.
13:23I think Luna, the name, suits her.
13:25It does, doesn't it?
13:27Oh, my God, she's so cute.
13:34Ciara learned to control herself.
13:36I'll give you her lead just so she doesn't try and follow me out.
13:39You're going to be OK? Yeah.
13:45Come here. What's this?
13:51So this is what I was worried about.
13:53She's gone all frightened now.
13:55Erm...
13:57Body's gone all tense, the tail's tucked.
14:00She's not feeling relaxed.
14:05Oh, you're very nervous, aren't you, darling?
14:12How sad that she's so upset.
14:19What's this?
14:22Come here.
14:26It's OK.
14:27It's OK.
14:30Yeah, she's not interested.
14:32I kind of feel bad.
14:33I've got some mistletoe with you.
14:34What?
14:35That's a hard pass.
14:36No mistletoe needed, huh?
14:38No mistletoe needed, huh?
14:39No mistletoe needed, huh?
14:40No, that's it.
14:41Oh, you're trying to wheel your hair back in now, are you?
14:42Getting your little underbite out.
14:43That's not happening, sister.
14:44Oh, well, thank you.
14:45You knew what that meant.
14:47Oh, yay!
14:48Yay!
14:49Yay!
14:50Yay!
14:51I've got Christmas kisses!
14:52Yay!
14:53Yay!
14:54Chico.
14:55Don't know what to expect.
14:56It's like Blind Date, but for doggies.
14:57He's going to love it.
14:58He's going to love it.
14:59American Bulldog, Chico, is looking for a beard.
15:00I'm going to go away back in now, are you?
15:01Getting your little underbite out.
15:02That's not happening, sister.
15:03Oh, well, thank you.
15:04You knew what that meant.
15:05Oh, yay!
15:06Yay!
15:07Yay!
15:08I've got Christmas kisses!
15:09Yay!
15:10Yay!
15:11Chico.
15:12Don't know what to expect.
15:13It's like Blind Date, but for doggies.
15:14He's going to love it.
15:15American Bulldog, Chico, is looking for a beard.
15:17He's going to love it.
15:18He's going to love it.
15:19He's going to love it.
15:20He's going to love it.
15:21He's going to love it.
15:22He's going to love it.
15:23He's going to love it.
15:24He's going to love it.
15:25American Bulldog, Chico, is looking for a big, slobbery Christmas kiss.
15:30People tell him he's handsome, and then he smiles back at them as if to say,
15:34yes, I know I am.
15:35He just takes it all in.
15:37He loves it.
15:38It's like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth.
15:42Chaperoned by devoted dog dads, Darren and Alan.
15:46Merry Christmas!
15:47Merry Christmas!
15:48That's Chico.
15:49Oh, my God.
15:50You're gorgeous, ain't ya?
15:51He's just cheeky.
15:52And that's what he gets called.
15:53Cheeky Chico.
15:54Cheeky Chico.
15:55Cheeky Chico.
15:56I love that!
15:58Come for a pal, or is it a date?
16:01Well, I think it might be a date.
16:03He's had a bath and everything.
16:04I'm going to say, has he got a bit of that doggy aftershave on?
16:07Black Cherry.
16:08Black Cherry.
16:09Apparently that's the one that does it.
16:10I need to have a sniff of him.
16:12And I say hello.
16:14Oh, delicious.
16:17Do you smell lovely?
16:19Do you reckon he kisses on first date?
16:21He goes mental when he meets other dogs.
16:23Does he?
16:24Yeah.
16:25Well, I'll be honest with you, he smells better than most men that I've met.
16:28So I think he's got a shot at ya.
16:34You're enough.
16:35You're a good girl.
16:36You okay?
16:37Keira's a bit distraught.
16:40No, she's not.
16:41She's all right.
16:42Mum, look at Keira's face.
16:43I know.
16:44What's this?
16:50Yeah, do you smell the trees?
16:52Nothing's gonna change until somebody has at least got hold of the lead because then there's that connection.
17:07So I want this to work for her.
17:09Good girl, Luna.
17:11Good girl.
17:13I think now is the right time for her to have a dog.
17:17She's definitely matured enough.
17:19She's just gonna get so much out of it because she'll put everything into the dog.
17:24Whether it's love, whether it's enjoyment.
17:27It'll help her grow as a person.
17:29And if she has half of what Leon and I had, I'll be over the moon.
17:34Hello.
17:35Come in.
17:36Come here.
17:37Good girl.
17:38It's okay.
17:39It's okay.
17:40It's okay.
17:41Good girl.
17:42Good girl.
17:43Go on, Keira.
17:46Should we stand up?
17:47Should we stand up?
17:48Come on.
17:49Good girl.
17:50Good girl.
17:51Okay. It's okay. It's okay.
17:55Good girl. Good girl.
17:58Go on, Keira.
18:04Should we stand up? Should we stand up?
18:13Come on. Good girl.
18:21Good girl.
18:25This little girl is absolutely amazing. Yeah.
18:29Good girl, Luna. Good girl.
18:33The movement is important. You are just out together.
18:37It's been a long time. She's having a good sniff.
18:39You're just there.
18:41She's then like, oh, we had a good time, didn't we?
18:45Walk a little bit faster. She's going to get confident.
18:47She sees you more confident. That's it.
18:49Good girl. We can do it. Good girl.
18:51Dad is right.
18:53Yay!
18:55You know what they do in the crafts when they show the audience?
18:57Come on then. Like they do at crafts.
18:59Like they do at crafts.
19:01Come on. Come on.
19:03That's it.
19:05Yay!
19:11Good girl.
19:13She's snuggled into her.
19:15I think we're going to get a belly rub.
19:17Please.
19:18Oh, come on.
19:19Come on.
19:20Oh, we're going to have it.
19:21Hi.
19:22Look, there it is. There it is. There it is.
19:25Good girl. Good girl.
19:27Good girl.
19:28Good girl.
19:33Oh, my goodness. Yay.
19:35Good girl.
19:36There you go.
19:37Now, go get it.
19:38She's a playboy.
19:39Great girl.
19:40Yes!
19:41He's bounding all over the place.
19:44Look at her.
19:47She's so cute.
19:48Oh, this could be the start of a really beautiful relationship.
19:52Oh, my God, isn't it just?
19:54That was huge.
19:55Good girl.
19:56Good girl.
19:59It's just me.
20:00She's on the bench between them.
20:02Oh, my God.
20:03Lou, Lou, Lou, Lou, Lou.
20:05I kind of felt victorious.
20:07I'd won the trust of this little dog.
20:13When I could see the connections and the little sparks between Luna and Keira, it was brilliant.
20:20The only reservation is she's not going to just come in and all of a sudden be everybody's friendly dog.
20:25We've got to make sure that we fit Luna as well, what she needs.
20:30I like Luna.
20:31I think we should adopt her.
20:34That's up to them.
20:37I also think we should adopt her.
20:38I second that.
20:40There's two votes.
20:41Anyone else?
20:46You're really rocking the Christmas tootie.
20:49Oh, Chico time.
20:50If I move over.
20:51Oh, I like that you have to move over to one side.
20:52That's what happens at home.
20:53So I'll be sat on the couch, really comfortable and he'll just go, stare at me and sometimes I'll end up on the floor.
21:10What's he looking for, the sister, a girlfriend?
21:13He's thinking girlfriend.
21:16Character or looks?
21:17Chico?
21:18I think he wants both.
21:19I'd say someone that can put him in his place when he's getting too in their face.
21:24He had a sister, Holly, quite dominant over him and stuff as well.
21:28Yeah.
21:29So he knew his position.
21:32So this is Holly and Chico on Christmas Day.
21:37So Holly was a diva.
21:39Very stroppy, very demanding.
21:42Chico and Holly, they seem to compliment each other.
21:44She brought out the best in him and him in her as well.
21:50We lost her last October.
21:52Oh, I'm sorry.
21:53She was a Dorset old time bulldog.
21:55It sounds like she was a very big personality in his life.
22:00It's affected him.
22:02It's heartbreaking, isn't it, when he makes that little sound.
22:06So are you looking for another bulldog or are you open to other breeds?
22:11I am definitely a big bulldog fan.
22:14Bulldogs are the ones I look at first.
22:16OK, we'll go and work on it.
22:18See you soon.
22:20Good boy.
22:21Get me a doggie.
22:22Good boy.
22:25Prance like Prancer.
22:27Need some antlers and then you'll be a reindeer.
22:30We'll be all right.
22:32Good girl.
22:34After arriving together as strays, the Woodgreen team have been assessing Jenny and Dory's behaviour.
22:40We're seeing more reactivity from both of them, kind of feeding off of each other.
22:47Good girl. What's in here?
22:49So we do think splitting them is going to be better for both of them.
22:53Get you settled.
22:55So although it is initially sad, when you know, kind of, that they're going to move forward a lot quicker apart, that does make it a little bit easier.
23:03I think you'll be absolutely fine.
23:05Good girl.
23:07Well done.
23:09See you later.
23:13Good girl, Jenny.
23:18Hello.
23:19Hello.
23:20I would feel like I've let you down if I didn't tell you that we do have a bulldog.
23:30Yeah.
23:32You know, she would be very much a close replica to the dog that you've lost.
23:38She's six years old, very affectionate, and she'd be a great dog for Chico.
23:42And her name is Queen.
23:44My God.
23:46You've gone on a date, Chico.
23:49Queen is definitely the sassy Queen.
23:53Definitely got a swagger going on.
23:56She kind of gives that side eye, but it's like a regal, yeah, I know that I'm good.
24:03Queen has not been lucky in love so far.
24:06You just want to sit there and look gorgeous.
24:08Yeah.
24:10It's really hard for Queen to be in kennels because she is so affectionate.
24:15She's just so lovable. How can you not love this little face?
24:19Think this will be your time to shine?
24:21Sunshine.
24:35What song is guaranteed to get your dog's attention this time here?
24:41I have no idea.
24:43Oh Christmas Treat.
24:46Oh my God, that's terrible.
24:47You've got to make it to town.
24:50Now you're ready for your date, Chico.
24:52She's called Queen, so you need to treat her like one.
24:59If we got a dog ready for Christmas this year, it would be the best present for Chico.
25:06Since Holly went, he looks so sad.
25:09I know that he misses her because when I take him out, he'll be all bubbly and excited to meet other dogs.
25:17And then when he gets home, he just looks lonely.
25:20I really think that him getting a new partner will bring out the giddiness and all the things that we love about him.
25:32You're watching the dog now, aren't you? You know what's coming.
25:34This is a really big day, exciting day for him.
25:45This is Queen.
25:47Oh, how beautiful is Queen?
25:48Oh, that's a nice play bow.
25:52Oh, he likes her.
25:55And she's play bowing back, which is lovely.
26:01She's made a brilliant first impression.
26:05Look at her face.
26:07Oh my goodness.
26:09Good boy.
26:10Oh, she's definitely enjoying the interaction.
26:13Confident.
26:14Yeah, definitely.
26:17She's a really nice age, got that life experience, so she knows how to handle herself.
26:24Good boy.
26:27This is brilliant, isn't it? This is exactly what we wanted to see from them.
26:31Good boy.
26:35What do you think we should have for Christmas dinner this year?
26:37Fillet Steak.
26:39Oh, I don't even want turkey and like pigs in blankets.
26:42I can take it or leave it.
26:46Supposed to be a mistletoe.
26:48We're going to have a little kiss under the mistletoe.
26:56We can't have pigs in blankets with fillet steak, can't we?
27:00Oh, you can.
27:01Bringing the festive cheer.
27:03Tracey.
27:04Merry Christmas.
27:05And her husband, Rick.
27:08I love your hat.
27:10It's a Christmas pudding, is it?
27:11It is.
27:12And where's your Christmas hat?
27:13I don't wear a Christmas hat.
27:14I try.
27:15Get him in some antlers.
27:20Are you going to go with the hat, Rick?
27:22There you go.
27:23Look at that.
27:27Stunning.
27:28Gizzle.
27:29Hoo, hoo, hoo.
27:30Oh, humbug.
27:31Is this all the front?
27:32Are you really, really Christmas here?
27:34Is that what's going on?
27:35No.
27:37I get proper into the Christmas spirit.
27:41Driving, singing.
27:42I need to have a bit of Mariah.
27:45Really?
27:46From my youth.
27:47No.
27:48No?
27:49No.
27:50We have good banter together and, you know, we've been together like 20 odd years.
27:56Was it love at first sight?
27:57I think it was for you, wasn't it, Rick?
27:59Sorry, you pursued me.
28:00You pursued him?
28:01Yes.
28:02I did not.
28:03We worked at the same place.
28:04And you followed him?
28:05Yes.
28:06So it was my job to get properties ready for new tenants.
28:10He was a tradesman.
28:11Everyone knew Rick.
28:13She followed me everywhere.
28:14I did not.
28:15Was there a chat up line in there?
28:16Was it literally, why are you following me?
28:18Yeah.
28:25Chico wants to be your friend.
28:28Hello, you.
28:29How are you doing?
28:30Oh.
28:31Chico.
28:32Oh, he loves her.
28:34Maybe a little bit too much.
28:36Chill out.
28:40Just to tell him he's been a bit too intense.
28:44And just to back off a little bit.
28:45That's what he needs though.
28:46Yeah.
28:47He does need a lady to tell him off.
28:50It's just a little bit too OTT on a first date.
28:52He's not very good at playing it cool, is he?
28:54No.
28:55Chico, that's a bit too much.
28:57Oh, okay.
28:58All right.
29:00You know, she's just asserting some authority, isn't she?
29:03He likes to be controlled.
29:04Yeah.
29:05That's what he's used to.
29:07Yeah.
29:09She's getting a little bit fed up now, isn't she?
29:11Yeah.
29:12Come on, you come over here, have a little break from him.
29:15Just take this jumper off.
29:16You can see how desperate he is to make friends.
29:20Yeah, he just wants to be friends.
29:21Yeah.
29:22He's the softest dog.
29:26He needs this.
29:27He needs to have another dog there that can bring the best of him.
29:32Put a smile on his face.
29:34You need to keep your cool, Chico.
29:37He needs to play a bit of hard to get.
29:39He's too eager.
29:41What do you think of Queen?
29:42She's a stunner.
29:43She is.
29:44And she's such a character, isn't she?
29:45She's got a slobber all over her face.
29:47Oh, lovely.
29:48Yeah, she loves the ears.
29:51Are we doing the big tickles?
29:52Is that what you want?
29:54I think they really like her and they desperately want this to work.
29:58It's whether Chico's going to be too much for her.
30:02She's Chico.
30:03Are you more relaxed now?
30:05This is so lovely to see that they're just happy to be around each other.
30:07Just happy to chill.
30:09You turning on the cuteness even more now?
30:10Yes.
30:12Yeah, you are.
30:15You be friends.
30:16Yeah?
30:17Be friends.
30:18We will go out for a walk and see how they get on.
30:25Go on, Queen.
30:27When Chico was getting told off by Queen, she wasn't subtle with it.
30:32It was, right, that's enough.
30:34You get a treat when you don't bark at Chico.
30:37We want to take a little think about it.
30:40I just want to make sure that it is the right one
30:42and we're making the right choice for him as well.
30:46It feels a bit weird that we're on the date with them.
30:48I know.
30:54Have you considered what type of dog you might be looking for?
30:58No.
31:00I love all dogs.
31:03My issue is how the dog would cope with the wheelchair.
31:08Right, OK.
31:10Unfortunately, Rick had a freak accident.
31:15I fell off the table.
31:17Yeah.
31:19And paralysed from the chest down.
31:21So sorry to hear that.
31:23I was round the next door neighbours and I just happened to be in their garden.
31:29A nice sunny day to see my friend.
31:32Maybank holiday, wasn't it?
31:34Yeah, sitting on their garden table, just swigging my legs.
31:39And then I've had a coughing fit.
31:46Blacked out and fell off the table and gone straight head into the floor.
31:54And I was instantly paralysed.
31:57I couldn't move anything.
32:01It's been a real...
32:07Tough.
32:08Tough time.
32:09It's been tough, yeah.
32:10It's been a tough time.
32:11I'm just grateful that...
32:13that we've got him.
32:15We've still got his cheekiness and his charm.
32:18He's still the same person.
32:19He's still the same person.
32:20He can't walk.
32:21No.
32:24So all four limbs on Rick are affected.
32:27His spinal cord is just really badly bruised.
32:29And I was on the ward.
32:32I moved my big tail on my left foot.
32:35And I was like, wow.
32:37It's been 11 months.
32:39He went through lots of physio.
32:41I moved both arms.
32:43You know, but...
32:45I can't do a lot of else though, can I?
32:47Not at the moment.
32:48Not at the moment.
32:51I miss a cuddle.
32:54And it's something that we're working on, isn't it, with, like, physio.
32:57So he can put his arm round me.
32:59Yeah.
33:01But having a dog...
33:03...snuggle up to you.
33:04Do you have some sofa time with the dog?
33:06You happy with him up on the furniture?
33:07Absolutely.
33:08Oh, yeah.
33:09Up on the furniture.
33:10It'll be spoiled.
33:12I can tell.
33:15Age bracket?
33:17I'd like a younger dog, if possible.
33:20So we can spend more time with it.
33:21So we can spend more time with it, yeah.
33:23Yeah.
33:24We're going to go and have a look.
33:26Thank you!
33:28Oh, Rick!
33:29Oh, right, so we have just met Tracy and Rick.
33:37Mm-hmm.
33:38Tracy and Rick.
33:39Erm...
33:40What are they looking for?
33:41Temperament's got to be the main aspect, because Rick's in a wheelchair.
33:45He had an accident.
33:46I'm wondering about Jenny.
33:51Did you see that?
33:53Jenny came in with Dory.
33:56They've been doing really well now that they're separate.
34:00Jenny, she's really affectionate.
34:02She just loves a cuddle.
34:03She'll lean into you for attention.
34:05It's really, really sweet.
34:09She's ridiculous.
34:11She's really ready for her new home
34:12and ready to bring some Christmas joy into someone's lives
34:16who might have lost a bit of their spark.
34:22Is that a heartbeat I can hear?
34:23Oh, my gosh, guys.
34:27We've had a look.
34:29We've found one that we really like.
34:33It's a little girl called Jenny.
34:35Jenny.
34:36Erm, she's approximately two.
34:38OK.
34:39So it's a nice age.
34:40Perfect.
34:41Yeah.
34:42She's unique.
34:43OK.
34:44And I think that she'll turn heads.
34:46Is she the little dog?
34:47She's no chihuahua.
34:48Right.
34:49Don't worry.
34:50Can't do that to your street cred.
34:53No, no, no.
34:54No.
34:55She loves to have a fuss and snuggle.
34:57Yeah.
34:58You're thinking, well, why is she here?
35:01Erm, she had a tough time.
35:03She was found tied to a tree.
35:06Aww.
35:07And was brought into us to look after and find a new life.
35:13So, here we are.
35:16Want to meet her?
35:17Let's go and meet Jenny.
35:19Yeah?
35:20Yeah.
35:21Awesome.
35:23Are you excited?
35:24We're going to meet some new people.
35:32We're going to meet Jenny.
35:34Wow.
35:35Jenny.
35:37Since my accident, I can't do anything for myself much.
35:46The current terms of it has been hard.
35:48Because I'm not sure how you do.
35:53If I'm honest.
35:54You know what I mean?
35:56One minute you're alright, the next minute you're not.
36:00A little lip there, I think.
36:03This was our wedding anniversary.
36:05I think our 18th.
36:07It's very difficult seeing old photographs of us.
36:10Rick was always the loudest guy in the room.
36:14Everything has changed.
36:19Yeah.
36:20Apart from me and you.
36:22Yeah.
36:23That's still, that's still just the same.
36:28Look, I aren't swathing us out.
36:33Some things you say, honestly.
36:36Not weird.
36:37Why?
36:39At the moment, with Rick, he's very withdrawn.
36:46We've got a very diluted version of Rick.
36:51And I want to get some of that old Rick back.
36:57I can't believe someone left her tied to a tree.
37:02So sad.
37:04Rick's mood when he's around dogs just changes.
37:10His little face lights up and it's just a joy.
37:16With a dog, Rick's confidence will grow.
37:20Seeing Rick happy is just everything to me.
37:25Is it you, Scott?
37:26Is it you, Scott?
37:27Is it you, Scott?
37:28Is it you, Scott?
37:30Is it you, Scott?
37:31Oh, fuck.
37:32Oh, fuck.
37:34Oh, fuck.
37:39Should we get your Christmas dinner?
37:40Do you want some?
37:41Sosages?
37:42Pigs in blankets?
37:45Hello, this is Jenny.
37:48She's really affectionate and she loves treats.
37:50Okay.
37:51I'm going to leave you to it.
37:52Okay.
37:54You're welcome.
37:56Jenny.
37:59I love her.
38:01Oh, did he just say I love her?
38:03Did he just say that?
38:04He did.
38:05Yeah, yeah, he did.
38:06Oh, my God.
38:08Hi, little girl.
38:10Where are you going?
38:12Oh.
38:13Shall I find you a treat?
38:15Jenny.
38:17Hi.
38:19Hi.
38:21Hello.
38:22I'm delighted, but obviously we've got to see what she thinks of Rick.
38:25Yeah, it's early day, isn't it?
38:26Yeah.
38:28Because he's not in a position to offer a hand or give her a treat.
38:32Good girl.
38:34Jenny, who's this?
38:37This might be your daddy.
38:41Jenny.
38:43Jenny.
38:47It's almost like she's unsure about Rick just sitting in the chair.
38:54What's this?
38:55What about the boy?
38:56What about the boy?
38:57The dog's primary source of communication is body language,
39:00so they're watching our movements all of the time.
39:04And, obviously, Rick can't move his body.
39:09Do you like it?
39:10It's hard for her to work out.
39:12No.
39:13No?
39:16The only thing is, like, is whether she takes the arts.
39:18I think she's beautiful.
39:20Come on, then.
39:21Come on, little girl.
39:24Let's go and see Rick.
39:26I would say Tracy was an angel sent down to save me.
39:31She's wonderful.
39:33Let's go and see Rick.
39:34And I wish I could do the same for her as she does for me.
39:43For her to be happy.
39:44Do you like a snuggle?
39:46I like a snuggle, too.
39:48See, that's the type of cuddle she wants.
39:50Yeah.
39:52Yeah?
39:53Yeah?
39:54Yeah?
39:55Yeah?
39:57Come on.
39:58Come on.
39:59Good girl.
40:00Come on, Nick.
40:01Let's go and see Rick.
40:02Come on.
40:03Come on, baby.
40:04Jenny!
40:05Oh, Jenny!
40:06What's this?
40:07Come up.
40:08Go on.
40:09Go on.
40:10Go on.
40:11Go on.
40:12Go on.
40:13Go on.
40:14Go on.
40:15Go on.
40:16Go on.
40:17Go on.
40:18Go on.
40:19I would really love to see her get up to Rick's height on that.
40:22Sofa.
40:23Yeah.
40:24Up.
40:25Up.
40:26Up.
40:27Big jump.
40:28Jenny!
40:29Come.
40:30What's this?
40:31What's this?
40:32What's this?
40:33Ooh, what's this, Jenny?
40:34Come on, girl.
40:35I just want the dog to accept us.
40:37That would be the start of a conversation.
40:40Oh, what's this?
40:42Oh, what's this, Jenny?
40:43Come on, girl.
40:45I just want the dog to accept us.
40:48That would be the start of a conversation.
40:51The start of a happy end to a sad, difficult time that we've had.
40:58Ooh, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
41:00Mmm.
41:01Ooh, Jenny.
41:03Oh, come on, Jenny.
41:05Please.
41:06Please.
41:07Come.
41:08Come on.
41:09Up.
41:10Yeah.
41:11Yes.
41:12Well done, Jenny.
41:16Yeah.
41:21Good girl.
41:22I think she's adorable.
41:23I think she is too.
41:24I didn't have any expectations to walk away with a dog.
41:27We were still thinking about the dog.
41:28Is our life going to support a dog?
41:29Is our life going to support a dog?
41:30You can either just stay flat out and look at the dog or just stay flat out and look at the dog.
41:31Yeah.
41:32Yeah.
41:33Good girl.
41:34I think she's just a little bit of a dog.
41:35I think she's adorable.
41:36I think she is too.
41:37I think she's adorable.
41:38I think she is too.
41:39I didn't have any expectations to walk away with a dog.
41:54We were still thinking about the dog.
41:56Is our life going to support a dog?
41:58You can either just say flat out no forever or you can just gracefully give in.
42:05Luna.
42:06Come on, honey.
42:07Say hello.
42:08Luna is my little bestie.
42:12Spin.
42:13She's so clever.
42:14Good girl.
42:15Face bump.
42:16She knows so many tricks now and her confidence has grown so much.
42:21Come on.
42:22Come here.
42:23Luna loves him.
42:24She's always trying to cuddle up next to him.
42:26Good girl.
42:27Oh, you like that.
42:29The connection that I wanted Kira to have with her dog is there.
42:33Because it's going to be her dog.
42:35It wasn't going to be mine.
42:36Now I have her, it's so much better.
42:39I think she feels completely loved and safe here.
42:44She's literally everything I wanted in her dog.
42:46Everything.
42:48She can't put dog on her Christmas list because she's already got a dog.
42:51No, no, no, she's already talking about getting another one.
42:53Oh, yes, she does want.
42:54We've got one, can't we just have two?
42:57I shouldn't have taken her to Crofts.
42:58There you go.
42:59Smiling beautiful.
43:00I wanted Chico to have a new friend.
43:01I just wanted that spark back with him, that he'd have somebody else that he could bounce
43:13off to give him and you Lisa life.
43:16I thought Queen was adorable.
43:19But she instantly put him in his place.
43:22We both had sort of reservations around if she keep up with him.
43:27We had a long talk about it and then in the end we decided not to.
43:35However, we did find him a friend.
43:38Tammy.
43:39Come here.
43:40Good girl.
43:41Hello.
43:42Hello.
43:43We came across Tammy in our local dog rescue centre.
43:48She was a stray and now she's part of the family.
43:51She's a little softy.
43:53They give each other kisses and they're just really good together, I think.
43:59Good boy.
44:00Good girl.
44:02Her and Chico spend all their time chasing each other, which is what we wanted.
44:05Go.
44:06Go on, then.
44:07Are you tired now, Chico?
44:09Chico's definitely a lot more content.
44:12He's just happier in himself again.
44:14But he's also, it's not like he's obsessed with her either.
44:17He can very much let her go and do her own thing, but he seems more content that she's
44:21in the house.
44:22Definitely Chico time again.
44:24Look at them together.
44:32Before we could even consider taking Jenny, we had to do lots of thinking.
44:36It was a really big decision that we had to make really.
44:41Which took all of about 30 seconds.
44:43LAUGHTER
44:44So, Jenny is now named Dottie.
44:52Dottie!
44:54She's fantastic.
44:56I absolutely worship her little paws that touch the ground.
44:59That's it.
45:00Love at first sight.
45:01Totally.
45:02Dottie's coming out of her shell now.
45:06Oh, she certainly is.
45:08Mmm, Dottie!
45:10She's very mischievous.
45:12She had the builder's lunch away.
45:15Dottie Westies!
45:16Don't like Mr Santa, Dottie, do you?
45:22Like me?
45:23A bar humbug.
45:24Good girl!
45:28You do use your arms more to try and stroke her, don't you?
45:32Yeah, yeah.
45:33Right, Dottie.
45:35That's amazing.
45:37Yeah!
45:38She just makes me happy.
45:40You know, mornings, evenings, jumping on my bed.
45:43It's fantastic.
45:45For me to see you and Dottie together,
45:48your face just lights up Rick.
45:51And it's just priceless.
45:54Just made a massive difference.
45:56Could adopting a rescue dog change your life?
