00:00Hello.
00:02These days I spend more and more time in my Wiltshire home.
00:06And the pub I own.
00:08Thinking about all the big problems in the world.
00:12And some smaller ones that annoy me.
00:16Luckily there's a place I can go to solve them all.
00:20Or at least try.
00:22My shed.
00:24Right.
00:26It's here that I have the tools.
00:28Let's just saw some wood up.
00:30The tea.
00:32And a couple of other highly competent blokes.
00:36Very good. Brace yourself.
00:38Who've agreed to help me rid the world of problems.
00:40Is she getting a ticket out?
00:42Great.
00:44And small.
00:46The cereal has gone soggy.
00:48I'll also have to take on other people's problems.
00:50What is wrong with Peter?
00:52He used to make a sound.
00:54And now he doesn't.
00:56The locals at my pub.
00:58Who are always bringing me stuff to bend.
01:00Is it a train set?
01:02So join us.
01:04And our excitable crew.
01:06Who will capture our endeavours.
01:10That was epic.
01:12As we create.
01:14Make.
01:16That feels like a terrible thing we've just done.
01:18Repair. So it's never worked.
01:20My life time.
01:22And repurpose.
01:24In my shed load of ideas.
01:28What do you think?
01:30This is just brilliant.
01:32What do you think?
01:34What do you think?
01:40Here I am.
01:42Apparently driving for pure pleasure.
01:44Through the glorious Wiltshire countryside.
01:46In my mini.
01:50Actually.
01:52And despite the vacant expression.
01:54I'm thinking about one of those little problems.
01:58That really bother me.
02:04The weekly shop.
02:06And what a senseless waste of life that is.
02:08Because you drive to the supermarket.
02:10You park your car.
02:12You go and find a trolley.
02:14You take your trolley around the supermarket.
02:16You put all your shopping in it.
02:18So you can pay for it.
02:19And then it gets put into bags.
02:20And then you put the bags back in the trolley.
02:22Then you wheel the trolley back to the car park.
02:24And you take the bags out of the trolley.
02:26And you put them in your car.
02:27And then.
02:28Unless you're a blight on society.
02:29You go and put the trolley away.
02:30In the trolley parking place.
02:31Then you drive home.
02:32Then you unload the bags.
02:33And then you put it all in your house.
02:35I mean for a start.
02:37It's un-environmental.
02:38Because we're told.
02:39We're not supposed to use our cars.
02:41For short local shopping journeys.
02:43And you use all these bags.
02:45And these are plastic.
02:46And that is BAD.
02:49Despite bag charges.
02:51And reusable bags for life.
02:53We still use over 400 million.
02:56Single-use plastic bags per year.
02:58And make lots of shopping trips.
03:00In our cars.
03:02Something needs to be done.
03:04And.
03:05We.
03:06Have an idea.
03:08What if we got rid of the need.
03:11For bags and cars.
03:12When we go shopping.
03:14The answer could be surprisingly simple.
03:16Combine.
03:17One of my favourite things.
03:19The bicycle.
03:20With one of my least favourite things.
03:22The shopping trolley.
03:24And to make the world's first supermarket trolley bike.
03:27I'm going to need these two.
03:30My engineer.
03:31Simi.
03:32So I've got this plan.
03:34Who collects vintage socks.
03:36We'll heat it up a little bit.
03:38To anneal it.
03:39And then we'll hammer it out.
03:40And the incomprehensible Tony the tool.
03:43That's canny far that.
03:45Who's good with wood.
03:48And always ready with a power tool.
03:51And of course our up for anything crew.
03:54Woo.
03:55Who are also along for the ride.
03:57Sorry Lottie.
03:58So here is the supermarket trolley.
04:01We've also got a couple of bicycles.
04:03That I've recovered from the recycling centre.
04:06And we've got to combine the two.
04:08Such that you ride your supermarket trolley.
04:12To the supermarket.
04:13Around it.
04:14And back out again.
04:16Without getting off.
04:17It's quite a challenge.
04:18Because A this is surprisingly heavy.
04:20And as we know.
04:22Supermarket trolleys do not.
04:24Steer.
04:25So I've heard.
04:26I've never actually driven one.
04:27Let me have a go.
04:28This.
04:29This is completely.
04:31It's random.
04:32He can tell he never ever shopped in his life.
04:35Obviously normally my butler does the shopping.
04:37So I've got no idea how a supermarket trolley.
04:39How it works.
04:40Could you make it a sidecar?
04:43I hadn't thought of that.
04:44I'll be honest.
04:45It's a good reason.
04:46Yeah.
04:47It's going to be a bit too wide.
04:48Why?
04:49Have you ever ridden something with a sidecar?
04:51Yeah.
04:52It's very odd.
04:56Where's the break?
04:59Nice idea Tony.
05:00But we can eliminate it.
05:02We gather around the whiteboard.
05:04For one of Simi's excellent engineering drawings.
05:07So in my head.
05:09That is our trolley.
05:11Axle.
05:12Yeah.
05:13Some kind of pivot from this point.
05:16Anywhere between here and here.
05:18Going back up to our frame.
05:20Which will be seat.
05:22Post.
05:23However that's attached.
05:25So you've got your pedals.
05:27And then your back wheel.
05:30The clever bit will be that pivot there.
05:33Whether it's underneath the axle.
05:35Or somewhere back here.
05:38I'll just turn this upside down.
05:40Because we can.
05:41And it will stand up.
05:43So in effect.
05:45That's chopped off there.
05:47So the trolley is in effect sitting on here.
05:51Yes.
05:52So the trolley can do.
05:53Ah.
05:54So this is just an elaborate steering mechanism.
05:57Do we have to ride it upside down?
05:59Only in Australia.
06:00It's fantastic.
06:01You get on this.
06:02Outside your house.
06:03Or in your garage.
06:04Or your shed.
06:05Or whatever.
06:06You set off.
06:07And you don't get off again.
06:08Until you're back at your house.
06:09With your shopping.
06:10If your house is the right shape.
06:11You could ride it into your kitchen.
06:12Right.
06:13Cup of tea.
06:14And when I say a cup of tea.
06:15I of course mean a pint of beer.
06:16In a very nice pub I know.
06:17Morning.
06:18And I know it's very nice.
06:19Because it's my pub.
06:20And my regular customers know that I'm always up for taking a look at their broken odds
06:25and sods.
06:26As I have a bit of a reputation for mending stuff.
06:29And sure enough.
06:30No sooner have I sat down with Sim.
06:31Then local Amy turns up with a precious family heirloom.
06:34Hello.
06:35Hello.
06:36Are you Amy?
06:37I am.
06:38Ta-da.
06:39I am.
06:40Ta-da.
06:41I am.
06:42Ta-da.
06:43I am.
06:44Ta-da.
06:45I am.
06:46Ta-da.
06:47Hi.
06:48Hi.
06:49Hi.
06:50Hi.
06:51Hi.
06:52Hi.
06:53Hi.
06:54Hi.
06:55Hi.
06:56Hi.
06:57Hi.
06:58Hi.
06:59Is it a train set?
07:01It is.
07:02Do sit down and be prepared to sit down for a long time.
07:05This is far too old to be yours.
07:07He says diplomatically.
07:09Because this is from the 50s.
07:11Yes.
07:12It's my dad's.
07:13What is wrong with it?
07:15The Transformer.
07:18Seems to be the problem.
07:20It smokes after it's done a couple of rounds.
07:23Does it?
07:24So you've set it up?
07:26Not for about ten years.
07:29and why now suddenly have you decided dad turned 75 this year so i thought it might be quite a nice
07:37thing to um reinstate his childhood train set does he know you're doing this no he doesn't so
07:44if we fail we can just i have to admit this is slightly my specialism mending toys and especially
07:52toy trains so this is post 1959 i know that by the coupling but the track i know is from the late
07:5950s because this is the first series of track that trying made quite possibly in the richmond factory
08:05before they moved to margate i get all the girls um that is the 060 jinty okay these are trying
08:16trains which later became trying hornby and then hornby today's hornby railways are actually
08:22directly descended from these not the hornby of liverpool oh yes that's the automatic hopper so
08:26that goes over a little line side thing and then drops the coal out this will probably be largely a
08:33stripping clean job what we ought to do first simply is find out what's wrong with that because nothing
08:38will happen without that the transformer smokes or did last time you plugged it last time i plugged it
08:43in did you unplug it immediately or did you run around going oh my god it's smoking i unplugged it
08:47immediately excellent so you may have saved the windings by the way the other thing that's very
08:51very encouraging about this is your motion work is intact that little bracket is intact they often
08:57break okay and so i think your father took very good care of this right we are going to plug in
09:06the transformer for those of you who don't know the transformer takes the mains voltage ac transforms it
09:12into a safe 12 volt dc so that it doesn't kill you when you put your fingers on the rails and then that
09:18goes through this control box which is basically a rear stat and that controls the speed of the train
09:24right so if you plug that in and it doesn't go bang or burst into flames we can then check the
09:29output of those which should be 12 volts dc shouldn't it it should be should we go for it yeah correct
09:34bang bang is it humming yes it is right 12 volts dc dc 14.5 14.6 it's about 14 volts that's about
09:47right because there'll be a little bit of loss in here if there's any kind of short in that which
09:51would short that which would make that probably smoke now we're going to see if this which is the
09:57train speed controller works happy yes i'll hold the probes i will get i'll be the quick reacting switch
10:05hang on hang on hang on okay so your your ic switch and viewing display if it starts to smoke i will turn
10:12off yes we've got an output so you've got 14 volts turn the knob just see if that's getting warm there
10:21you go it works yeah so if i now take those two wires and apply them to the two sides of the locomotives
10:28electric motor we might see some life really
10:35excellent that's remarkable god you're good given the amount of dirt in there
10:43what was that that's a pigeon that is more than a pigeon the crow's on the train set
10:52i love my arm oh god
11:00the update is that the transformer and the rear stat works but the train set is now covered in guano
11:05and so is amy's arm but it's a small price to pay and it is considered good luck in some circles for a
11:12bird to crap on your head isn't it so they say
11:25you find us deep in wiltshire in the middle of a groundbreaking engineering project to solve both
11:32the environmental issues and inconvenience of the weekly shop by joining together a bike and a trolley
11:41which we are in the middle of dismantling look what i found conveniently discarded at the back of
11:47my shed i happened upon some wheels which are just the right size chuck it under and that way i reckon
11:54oh that's almost bespoke that is absolutely brilliant just cut these these i'd weld it on first
12:03should we do that let's do that before we weld anything together we're going to have to strip both
12:08our trolley and our bike of anything not strictly necessary i think we'll have a montage here with
12:14some slightly twee doing music from a free music library somewhere tony and i use brute force wall
12:24dispose this bit can go as well and a hammer to get rid of that child seat
12:31job done while simmy preps the bike's headstock ready to see if it will fit nicely onto the trolley
12:41so that's about the right height and with our three-wheeled prototype beginning to resemble simmy's
12:47drawing i think we've just about had enough of this twee music so if we cut this off mount that vertical
12:56does need to be vertical this needs to be vertical because when you ride a two-wheel bicycle when you
13:03go around a bend you lean and you have a thing called rake and trail which is basically the distance
13:10between the center of that and the center of the pivot and that is at an angle but it doesn't want
13:14to be at an angle on something with two wheels at the front otherwise when you turn one wheel will
13:17be trying to lift off the ground so that needs to be vertical if we put a plate on here because all this
13:24is very strong and we attach the fork straight to that plate because these trolleys they're designed
13:30to hold a lot of weight they are a full weekly shop and up to two children yes are you confident
13:36of where the plate should go well the box section i'm going to go and cut some box section now
13:41uh we'll measure that and get those in and we'll cut the headstock off
13:47happy yes job is stand on the other end to keep it stable just mind your eyes everybody
13:59this box section cut from simi's old barbecue
14:05will form a frame that the bike's fork will be welded onto all right none more of that simi
14:11angle grinding with his shorts on is slightly not hse no it isn't so please remember to wear the
14:19appropriate protective equipment if you're making a trolley bike at home right the next thing i i think
14:25is we cut this yeah but you haven't got any goggles on so don't get anywhere you want me to put some
14:31goggles yeah put some goggles on thank you right don't mind my eyes then
14:37we're cutting the bike frame so that we can establish the essential geometry between the
14:44headstock and the trolley and also so that there will be room for me to pedal turn over
14:52right nice and solid yeah
15:01that feels like a terrible thing you've just done what chop a bicycle yeah it's only now we're going to
15:07make it better though okay will our cut down bicycle pivot correctly with our stripped back
15:14trolley that is again almost too good to be true you lose a little bit of trolley space but let's be
15:22honest we're men we're going to go and buy three bottles of beer a tin of beans and sausages and some
15:27bread it's very true what that you could fit in a shopping basket yeah or just in your backpack i mean
15:35or your pockets even why are we doing this because it's fun okay
15:51yes innovation is fun but it's also very hard work the summer sun beats down all this grafting makes
16:09for a very hot and sweaty team so i'm wondering if there's a way to cool down that doesn't involve
16:16expensive air conditioning or electric fans but perhaps something a little more
16:21homemade it's very hot today it's about 28 degrees outside it's about well up to 10 degrees hotter in
16:28the workshop and we've been getting very sweaty so what if you could make cooling clothing we have these
16:35packs these are existing commercially available chili bin packs and we also have some sodium polyacrylate which
16:43is basically what goes in here mixed with water and it improves its ability to
16:49hold cold so what we're going to do and by we i mean simi because he can operate the sewing machine
16:55expertly is make a t-shirt for me we're also going to make tony a pair of cooling pants we're going to use
17:03two pairs of these waterproof pants one inside the other skillfully sewn together by simi so that the
17:12whole thing can be filled with the chili medium which is what you're going to make tony is this making
17:19any sense yeah unfortunately yes okay this is not just about humiliating tony we're trying to do our
17:28bit to fight global warming by finding low-fi low energy ways to stay cool as there are quite
17:36fortuitously six of these little ones could i have a six pack all the way around is it that i know you've
17:45never seen one yeah well i've not not in the mirror i haven't no so three there no no no no no no
17:56two two two yes what two two two that's it oh yes that looks like action man's torso yeah
18:05so simi gets to work sewing individual pockets for the ready-made ice packs to sit in come shove it in
18:11yeah that's good okay shall i hold that up and we can see what the effect of the six pack is
18:20excellent that's pretty good excellent i look like one of those you know cartoon superheroes
18:28right so next simi is going to incorporate these larger packs into the shoulders and then we'll put
18:33it in the fridge but first we need to fill tony's pants with our homemade cooling gel
18:39right so tony and i will make up the gel it's 10 grams per liter which doesn't sound like enough
18:45but apparently that's right according to the instructions sodium polyacrylate also known as
18:51water lock should we do one liter first and get a bit of chalk is often used in nappies and fire
18:56retardants because it can absorb up to 300 times its weight in water
19:02wow is it turning into really fat it's used in cool packs because the water gets trapped inside
19:09the gel reducing the rate at which it heats up it looks a bit like um crushed ice doesn't it yeah
19:15it looks like a slushie so it stays cooler for longer than plain ice it's fantastic now we've mixed up
19:23the cooling gel it's time for simi to sew individual pocketed channels into tony's massive pants to
19:30accommodate all the sodium polyacrylate mixture this is wilder stuff there's something slightly
19:38unsavoury about it your pants are also becoming very heavy tony but
19:54what are you doing to me
19:58so we're ready to put our cool clothing in the fridge we'll leave them in there for an hour put them on
20:05and see how good we look and how good we feel and just a few hours later enough time for a walk a
20:12pint and two shakes of a lamb's tail right men it's time to see if our hand-sewn cooling clothing
20:20actually works i'm gonna go first tony if that's okay oh yes it feels cold
20:26just put your hand on there oh that's gonna be nice to wear oh right i'm going to disappear into
20:39the lav and then emerge to gasps of amazement very cold
20:45i've got to say
20:55it's so realistic
20:59that's great i've got to say okay apart from that we've got the six pack a bit low
21:05all right but the sensation is fantastic you look very broad
21:10it's really good this these bits especially because they call down the sort of base of your
21:15neck it's it's really nice it does square your shoulders off as well doesn't it just
21:23how cold is it is it comfortable it's yeah it is actually there's there's no there are no sharp edges
21:29or anything i'm definitely cooler i'm cooling down even as i stand here talking to you and when you
21:35touch it do you actually think you've got abs so you're convincing yourself it's like yeah
21:42just oozing sex appeal
21:50and then we decided it was time for tony to put his pants on oh my god
21:58i'm never gonna keep these on
22:00come on tony
22:08do i have to
22:11you're gonna fall down
22:12are you cooler but mainly my thighs it's all dropped down it looks like you've had a prolapse of
22:32every single organ they're coming down feel it it's not right no no it's horrible okay
22:45i think you should sit down tony so we don't have to look at that
22:52i wish to be able to see less well
22:54um what can we conclude from that as an idea i'm not so sure about the pants but the shirt i think
23:02there's an idea it works if these are a bit thinner and they were more evenly distributed
23:09chuck your t-shirt in the fridge the night before get up slip it on walk out ice cool
23:16oh
23:18oh it's leaking
23:19oh
23:20oh
23:25sorry jesus
23:27it's squeezing on me back
23:35right i think that's the end of that scene
23:39i do hope so
23:46welcome back to wiltshire where we've been tackling climate change by inventing cool clothing
23:55and welding together a supermarket trolley and a bike obviously
24:00and now we're about to attempt to repair a broken train set as a surprise for amy's dad's 75th
24:07birthday no pressure then is everybody ready shall i speak
24:13yeah right the toy trains have been cleansed of bird poo by a very low paid junior researcher
24:21we're now ready to start mending them which in this instance isn't very difficult because
24:27i can reveal that i had almost exactly this train set in fact i still have it they had these two
24:34locomotives the 060 gint and the 462 princess elizabeth i also have the guards van this green
24:45coal truck i have that flat one i have one of these green ones and i did have one of these blood and
24:53custard coaches but my big sister trod on it in about 1969 and i haven't seen her since nevertheless there
25:01is a joy in mending things and there's a particular joy in mending these trains because actually over
25:06the years i've mended hundreds of them they're very very simple mechanisms all of these trying locomotives
25:13were designed to come apart by the removal of one screw down the chimney on these early ones and now
25:19that will pop out there it is so problems with the motor tend to be that the magnet becomes weak
25:29a good test is if you put the motor down and put your screwdriver on it i can sort of pick the
25:34motor up with the screwdriver which is a rough and ready test but it would be remiss of us not to use
25:42the remagnetizer sting the remagnetizer it's in here it's a remarkable thing i do like the uh the use
25:52of the meccano yes it's meccano themed this was made by a man called ronald dodds who's a toy train
25:59mender it's not something you like you to have lying around in the home to be honest in fact i've never
26:04met anybody else in the world apart from ronald dodds who has a toy train magnet remagnetizer using this
26:10compass you establish the north pole of the magnet this isn't absolutely crucial but it means that
26:16the locomotive will run in the correct direction i meant to say actually you shouldn't put anything
26:22like your watch or your mobile phone anywhere near this or really expensive cameras all your expensive
26:28cameras are you ready for remagnetizing makes quite a loud noise so brace yourself
26:35that's it these are basically coils with soft iron bars in them and they become a magnet when you
26:45apply the current and that remagnetizes because it's touching it the magnet in the motor the magnet
26:50in the motor is essential to its operation you can see look they're stuck to it now and doing my
26:55screwdriver test i don't know how that's happened well i've somehow demagnetized it which means it
27:08hang on did i put it in the wrong way around right i think you did yeah but that should just magnetize
27:13it in the other direction how can i have killed a magnet let's try that again that's the one that's
27:25the one yes so the screwdriver test works it's back it's back now let's test the remagnetized motor for
27:36real could you give me some juice on the controller yes look at that
27:48finally an electromotive force that's nice about little sparks and with the sparks flying
27:55it's time for a track test okay simi if you could plug in initiate the transformer please
28:04transformer is on i can hear it the transformer is buzzing so here we go are we ready i'm go i don't
28:10want to do this go on it wants to go and yet it doesn't i've got a bad feeling about this repair for
28:24some reason i don't know why it's just oh i should be i've done this dozens of times it doesn't work
28:31time to run some diagnostics first we check the power we've got 14 volts there so we eliminate that
28:40then we check the wiring that connection is good so there's no short then clean the track
28:50and clean the wheels sometimes you get sort of invisible dirt
28:55and finally we've had a bit of a fiddle around and we isolated the problem to the controller the
29:01rear stat we wiggled it and wiggled it and hopefully cleaned it up so it's just dirt and it needs
29:07cleaning like most things in life and it's not really surprising after all those years in the loft
29:12what is it that um benjamin franklin said he who lives by hope alone will die farting
29:19did you say that apparently so right that is running it's buzzing here we go
29:32that's great that is fantastic that's very pleasing i hope amy's father how old is he 75 and a half
29:39you know present it to them and they'll go wow that's amazing take it home and put it back in the
29:45loft again for another half century excellent very good well i enjoyed that
29:57but as much as i'd like to play with dave's train set all day i have more pressing matters over in my pub
30:04we're trying to invent new pub games to entertain the customers so they'll buy more beer and eat more
30:11food and today we have invented a garden game based on an old english idiom this is called two birds one
30:21stone sim if you'd like to activate the mechanism we fashioned two birds out of thin plywood cut out a
30:28small round hole in each and mounted them onto a pivot system as you can see the two birds swing
30:34they've got holes in them the idea is that you have to throw a stone at the point where the holds line up
30:40and it goes through both birds and then you win a prize that's it that's the tweet right who's going
30:48first tony yep there's a there's a jug there full of carefully selected pebbles we need to establish
30:55the throwing distance oh that's good that's canny far that no that's well it can't be too easy
31:04i don't think it's gonna be easy get three shots each okay simmy activate the two birds mechanism do
31:10you think it's over arm or under arm i'm gonna go under on okay rubbish it's harder than you think
31:19nope nope pants oh are you aiming for the hole oh that wasn't that was very low simmy do you want
31:30to go i'll activate the birds because he's selecting his stones very carefully hidden the good stones at
31:35the bottom this is one of those games that i mean it doesn't really mean anything but once it starts
31:53it sort of becomes very important doesn't it like so many things in life timing is everything
31:59i think it starts from when you lift your arms you've got to there it is it's about the rhythm of
32:06the throw versus the bird's movement about understanding space and time oh or it's about
32:16throwing a stone at some birds did that go through i think that went through it was a bit of an in off but
32:23it did go through so you are the first person ever to score at two birds one stone congratulations
32:29thank you very much it's one nil nil to sim with only one stone through the hole we invite members
32:35of the crew and a few locals to play along oh that was very close what's this game called two birds one
32:45stone stone causes i can't do it i obviously can't we even let cameraman will have a go i'll film it
32:53yeah what does this button do rubbish where are you from sir norway norway
33:03norway nilpa turns out to kill two birds in this game takes 12 members of the crew three locals some
33:10bloke from norway and about 500 stones before we eventually hit the target
33:20but it's very satisfying when it's achieved that was that was an almost perfect shot
33:28so it's a fantastic game actually i'm amazed no one's ever thought of it
33:33every pub in england will have one of these soon and that's a promise
33:40in wiltshire we're back in my pub and after a lot of delays cancellations and derailments sim and
33:51i are now ready to hand back this repaired and perfectly running train set that amy brought us
33:57when she heard that the royal oak is a pub of mending so amy who brought us this broken train set a few
34:05weeks ago is now waiting in the bar of the pub with her dad dave who was 75 a couple of months ago
34:13this is actually his train set he apparently hasn't seen it for many many years he certainly hasn't seen
34:20it running for probably decades and this is meant to be a big slightly belated birthday surprise for him
34:29so it will either be very emotional because he loved his train set or he's completely forgotten
34:35about it and wonders what the hell we're doing we're going to find out in about 15 seconds
34:40they're coming there's amy and there's dave her dad i better go hello hello how are you good thank
34:52you how are you very well thank you you must be dave mr may happy birthday belatedly thank you very much
34:59i gather it was a big one we have something over here for you do you recognize it i do and does it work
35:07well let's find out sir if you'd like to take the driver's seat
35:13is this the sort of thing that you thought amy would do for your birthday
35:17i think amy's always had an attachment to junk and and really wouldn't throw anything away and
35:29and she's just a hoarder and um whereas um yeah i i i put it away in the loft and forgot about it
35:40really um do you think when you get home you will simply put it back in the loft probably
35:46i've got i've now got a policy where um nothing goes in the loft um so because if it's in the loft you
35:54don't need it you mean you'll put it in the bin no no but it will be passed on to someone else yes
36:02yeah yeah passed on to the boys well that wasn't quite the emotional reaction we were hoping for
36:09but wait till he sees it go if you'd like to give it maximum berries forward sir which is clockwise it
36:17should there you go when was the last time you saw that going around 40 years really yeah it is
36:35bringing back memories of my childhood and i did spend a lot of time setting it up and going around buying
36:42model kits where you used to blue station buildings together and i mean i i honestly felt that i
36:50wouldn't see it again that's more like it dave oh it's just brilliant it's just really lovely to see
36:58it running after all these years and with the age behind it it was actually a pleasure to make it work
37:03again because as we've been saying there's something about bringing yeah a train set back to life because
37:08you know that you're effectively resurrecting somebody's childhood and the joy of childhood
37:13and the excitement because back when we were young oh god here i go the train set in a new bicycle those
37:20were the top of the day yes exactly you couldn't have a more exciting thing and there it is and it
37:27still works it was future-proofed yeah gosh am i going to get a bill now yes
37:32but it's okay we're going to do it in 1959 money so it's it's two and six
37:43thank you enjoy thank you
37:52and now from one mode of transport to another i set off on a bike ride across the countryside
37:58as i return to the problem of unenvironmental supermarket trips except this isn't just a
38:06normal bike this is a trolley bike the perfect merging of two engineering miracles this is the
38:15weirdest thing in the world expertly combined by me simi and tony to create something that outshines both
38:23it offers the ease and joy of riding a bike straight to your destination with the convenience of a trolley
38:31ready and primed to receive a shed load of shopping ah and in the knowledge that you can do it in one
38:39go without ever leaving the saddle sorry can't stop and here it is in all its glory on its inaugural ride
38:48to a well-known supermarket oh sorry morning yeah yeah and i'm into the supermarket i'm still not off my
38:58bike will it get through the doors yes and we're in
39:08right uh rice and pasta seasonal condiments i hate that word
39:15so it works as a bike morning but now let's see how it fares as a trolley crisps and snacks here we go
39:29peanuts
39:32epic oh look beans and sausages
39:44it's quite fast actually accelerates very well
39:52did a skid coming left thank you pies
40:02chocolate fingers oh they're high
40:05this is just brilliant i mean all i'm doing is going for a bike ride really it just makes shopping
40:19pleasurable um straight line steering is quite good it's got a good turning circle it does misbehave
40:26slightly in corners you have to remember about the back pedal brake so the geometry may need a little bit
40:31of work but the basic idea is good good morning morning and it's proving very popular with happy shoppers
40:39shoppers that's such an old-fashioned idea
40:54look at those people pushing a trolley some people are absolutely stuck in the 1970s
41:09doodal
41:21unfortunately i never passed my bike trolley proficiency test
41:25now all that's left to do is ride this incredible machine to the checkout under
41:31the watchful eye of the crew and Mel
41:37morning oh no I've realized that there's a slight issue with this yes please I've
41:50got I'm supposed to do this without getting off the bicycle
41:58thank you that's all right can I actually hang on no I can reach things look yeah
42:06hi I'm still on the bike I haven't put my feet on the floor no you're fine
42:16so this does slightly depend on very helpful supermarket staff they are and then I pay
42:25and then we just put it back in there yes okay do you like any bags no I would not like any bags
42:32thank you I don't need them that's good that comes the 4142 is that cash or card of course I don't have
42:41cash or a card my butler does this do you need me to say John yes please thanks I'll pay you back
42:49later thank you very much it's been absolutely fantastic bye bye I'm still on the bike
43:01it turns out that this year is the 75th anniversary of the very first shopping trolley being introduced
43:16to the UK 75 years and then all that time no one has thought it could be combined with a bicycle and
43:24this is brilliant you just go for a bike ride and pick up everything you need for a happy existence on
43:29the way it's excellent every home should have one and will
43:36thank you having fun oh yes lovely
43:43thank you
