Anthony Albanese on Anti-Semitism: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to eradicate antisemitism and introduce legislative changes following a deadly attack in Sydney that killed Jewish worshippers.

Speaking as funerals for the victims began, Albanese condemned extremist violence and said hatred inspired by groups such as ISIS had no place in Australia. The prime minister visited injured victims in hospital and met with families of those killed, including Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a prominent leader in Sydney’s Jewish community.

The government is under pressure to respond amid rising antisemitic incidents linked to global tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza war. Health officials say dozens remain hospitalised as investigations continue.

00:00We need to learn any lessons that are learnt from this, undertake stronger action, undertake
00:16any legislative change, undertake any powers, additional powers that are needed across the
00:23board.
00:24To work with the Jewish community, we want to stamp out and eradicate anti-Semitism from
00:30our society.
00:31We want to also stamp out the evil ideology of what would appear to be, from the investigators,
00:41an ISIS-inspired attack.
00:43That has no place.
00:45That's sort of hatred.
00:46We're continuing to work through a whole range of the measures in the Segal Report, of course,
00:51on anti-Semitism we are already implementing.
00:56If there's a need for, as well, to examine, this isn't a set-and-forget report.
01:02This is something that will be an evolving position.
01:05Anti-Semitism has been around for a long period of time.
01:09Many nations, such as the United States, have had special envoys in anti-Semitism for a long
01:14period of time.
01:16My government is the first to appoint one.
01:19Well, I pay tribute to Boris and Sophia Gurman, who – Boris attacked one of these terrorists
01:31as he got out of the car.
01:33And that caused Mr and Mrs Gurman, who had been married for 60 years, to lose their life.
01:40To Reuven Morrison, who threw bricks and took action to try and stop this occurring, also
01:49murdered by these terrorists.
01:53These are Australian heroes.
01:55Our thoughts are also with the families of funerals that will begin today.
02:02I met with Rabbi Eli's family yesterday.
02:05They are going through an extraordinarily difficult time.
02:12Rabbi Eli was clearly much loved in the community, not just by his family as well.
02:20And I think all Australians' thoughts are and hearts are with those families as they go through,
02:29fair-willing their loved ones.
