00:15de Emmett Till.
00:16Il y a un jeune homme en Mississippi.
00:18Il y a 15 ans,
00:20et quelqu'un qui a écrit une chanson sur lui.
00:22Il y a une grande signification pour moi.
00:24D'ailleurs, j'étais singe un petit rythme et blues.
00:27Ça n'a rien à faire avec la politique.
00:29Ma conscience switched
00:31to issues in the world.
00:32And there was one right there
00:34in my country, Mississippi.
00:50My first civil disobedience,
00:52we were told in high school,
00:55at a certain point in the day,
00:57the iron would go off.
00:58We were supposed to go home
00:59because it would replicate
01:02Russia sending a missile
01:04to our high school.
01:06And I knew that was ridiculous.
01:07How long would it take
01:08to get a missile from Moscow
01:10to Palo Alto High School?
01:12They said,
01:13I don't think there's time for us
01:14to go and hide, you know?
01:16So anyway,
01:17I stayed in school to protest.
01:19And then I was by myself.
01:20I felt that I was doing the right thing.
01:23And I kind of led my life like that.
01:27Non-violence is the only method of change
01:30that ever made any sense to me.
01:32And it's the most difficult
01:34because people don't understand it.
01:36And they think it's weak.
01:39they think it's,
01:41if you don't have a gun,
01:42it's hard for people
01:43to realize you're fighting.
01:45Do you understand that
01:46maybe people want to be more violent?
01:49I think it's easier
01:51to be violent.
01:52I think that's,
01:53it's just easier.
01:54So this is a fight
01:56where you are willing
01:57to accept suffering,
01:59but you're not willing
02:00to put suffering on somebody else.
02:03So you don't get to kill anybody.
02:04I have those paintings hanging up on my street
02:07in the trees
02:08so that the people who disagree with me
02:11can't find them.
02:12They can't reach them.
02:14I continue to write poetry.
02:16And I, of course,
02:17go on the big marches
02:18because there's so much terrible stuff
02:21going on in the world.
02:22How do I serve somebody else?
02:24And I can appreciate life
02:27and at the same time
02:29find a way to be of service.
02:31That's the best thing to say.
02:33People write songs.
02:34They write good songs.
02:35But there's a time period
02:37where people are waiting.
02:38They're waiting for
02:40We Shall Overcome.
02:41We're waiting for, you know,
02:44hundreds of thousands of people
02:46to be together.
02:47And you can't make that happen like that.
02:49What we do during this time period
02:52builds what's going to come
02:55when there's time for a real movement.
