00:00Police interceptors are all I for.

00:04And you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:07Speed 120.
00:09Ace Pursuit drivers.
00:11Contact, contact, contact.
00:13With air support.

00:19If you leave, you will get hit.
00:23They bring down the bad guys.
00:25I believe you'll want it, mate.
00:27Keep the streets safe.
00:34And battle 24-7.
00:37Get down on the floor.
00:38In the war on crime.
00:40Crash, crash.
00:42Overflow, wow.
00:43This is what it is, isn't it?
00:44We find them, we lock them up.
00:49Coming up.
00:53A dangerous driver and his wanted passenger.
00:57Go for a spin.
01:00You've got two red dots on you.
01:01If you pull them, you come out of them, you're going to get tased.
01:04A shocker in Northampton.
01:06Stay back.
01:07Stay back.
01:08Stay back.
01:09Stay back.
01:10And a donut at the Holiday Inn.
01:15Get his just desserts.
01:19There he is.
01:206-1.
01:21Contact.
01:22Contact.
01:23Contact.
01:24A shadow is approaching the sunny town centre.
01:39One of West Mid's most wanted has been spied on North Hans Patch.
01:44Wanted for suspected kidnap, stalking and assault, he's believed to be in a silver A-Class Merc.
01:54Yeah, I've got a eyeball.
01:55It's going wrong side to keep the left bollard on Weedham Road.
01:57I have to try.
01:58I have to try.
01:59I have to try.
02:00I have to try.
02:01I have to try.
02:02I have to try.
02:03I have to try.
02:04I have to try.
02:05To try.
02:06To try.
02:07To try.
02:08To try.
02:09To try.
02:10An unmarked armed response unit is tracking the Merc.
02:13Uh, vehicle is passing the material bingo on the near side.
02:18And it's eyes down for a full house because the driver...
02:22..seems up for a game of chase.
02:26The Merc's two up.
02:28To try.
02:29To try.
02:30To try.
02:31With the suspect believed to be the passenger.
02:33It looks like this driver wants to join him on the wanted list.
02:46Another unit joins the pursuit.
02:55And a growing convoy hurtles towards the M1.
03:03Cops need to stop him reaching the motorway, and they're booked in at the traffic.
03:21Lady Luck saves something for the bad guys.
03:24But they'll need more than luck to lose the four cops on their tail.
03:28Especially elite driver Paul Bertie Bertram in a Beamer M340i.
03:34The plan is to perform a box as Bertie takes the lead.
03:41He's on the Merc's bumper and just needs to get past.
03:44Bertie's a wizard at the wheel.
03:53A T-pack trained advanced driver with over 20 years worth of tricks up his sleeve.
03:57Including misdirection.
04:03He sells a dummy, then unleashes the 368 of the Beamer's horses.
04:07Merc is now the filling between an Interceptor sandwich.
04:20But this driver seems a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
04:23As he makes contact with the two-tonne ARV.
04:30And nearly loses it into the central reservation.
04:35The pursuit is now only a few miles away from reaching the M1.
04:40But will the Interceptors be able to stop him before there's mayhem on the motorway?
04:44The Interceptors are after a runaway Mercedes in Northampton.
05:05The passenger is wanted for suspected kidnap, stalking and assault.
05:17Bertie's pulled ahead of the Merc, which is caught between two cop cars.
05:22They need to stop it...
05:24..before it hits the M1.
05:26But with no way past Bertie's smart car at the front, they plan to turn the score from behind.
05:37Then slow the whole thing down.
05:41The runaway's not shy of a game of bumper cars.
05:48But he's playing with the wrong drivers.
05:50As Bertie continues to block, the ARV goes for the bash.
06:09The armed response coppers on scene have come prepared.
06:13Don't move, but you get tased, fella!
06:18Get your hands up!
06:19The passenger and driver...
06:28..feel the full force of the law.
06:33The passenger is confirmed as their suspect, and both blokes are going in bracelets.
06:38Calm, calm, calm, calm. I don't know about it.
06:40Right, you're under arrest. First, start dangerous drive.
06:43First, say anything, man.
06:44Make sure you don't have a question.
06:46Tell us an out loud.
06:47If you do say, man, give it an evidence.
06:49With the Mert driver willing to smash into the cop cars...
06:55..the only way to bring this pursuit to an end was to slow him down with the block.
07:01And finish with a perfectly executed tactical contact.
07:07What's your name?
07:10Sorry?
07:12Right, you'll come to no harm if you're compliant.
07:14Do you understand me?
07:15OK, OK, OK.
07:17Just behave yourself from now.
07:18Let's go.
07:19Despite risking their own lives, the lives of the interceptors and innocent members of the public, the driver thinks it's all a big joke.
07:29Bear in mind what you've done.
07:30Bear in mind what you've just done.
07:31Do not laugh.
07:32Do not laugh.
07:33It's going to kill people.
07:34You know that.
07:36But the repercussions of his actions aren't so funny.
07:40You'll go to prison for that.
07:42The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without a license or insurance.
07:50He received a 15-month suspended sentence, a 24-month driving ban and had to pay over £1,000 in costs.
07:58No action was taken against the passenger for the alleged kidnapping.
08:02However, for stalking and assault, he received a 12-week suspended sentence and a five-year restraining order.
08:09Give us two seconds.
08:14It's been a good result for the interceptors, but they're not only highly skilled in stopping cars...
08:19It's okay here, yeah?
08:20Just wait there for a second.
08:21Okay.
08:22They're also pretty handy at getting them moving again.
08:25Can you just bunch up a little bit?
08:28You come forward.
08:29Then you.
08:30Two minutes.
08:40Take a step back.
08:41The interceptors pride themselves on their negotiation skills.
08:44You can go on to the other side of the road.
08:46I just want you to stay away from me.
08:48There are some confrontations that can't be resolved with talk alone.
08:51Taser!
08:52Taser!
08:53Taser!
08:57And there's nothing like a carefully aimed red dot...
08:59Don't move.
09:00Stay there.
09:01Stay there.
09:02...to end a conversation.
09:04The benefit of having taser rather than spray or a baton is if you've got someone waving a knife or a sword around, you don't want to be that close because in the nicest sense there's going to be bigger than yours.
09:20With taser you've got the distance, so should you need to deal with someone who's uncompliant and is likely to cause harm or injury to someone, you've got a good 25 feet to deal with them.
09:34You haven't got to put yourself in danger basically, whereas the other bits of kit, you're more likely to get injured.
09:39...
09:45Early doors on Thursday morning.
09:47Also be advised yesterday, the call reports that he tried to attack staff with a pair of scissors.
09:54Multiple cars are responding to an assault in a supported housing unit.
10:00unit. And Chris Guttridge isn't far behind. Staff at the unit are worried about the safety
10:12of the other residents. Making threats, I believe, to somebody and trying to break into
10:18a room and causing a bit of damage. So Chris floors his beamer and zeroes in on the address.
10:30Officers already on scene report the suspect has locked himself in his room and may be
10:36armed.
10:38Public safety is the interceptor's top priority and uncertain whether he's got a weapon, they
10:47draw their tasers.
10:50There's no reply, so the team enter with caution with tasers at the ready.
10:59The man has violence markers and they suspect he may be getting ready to defend himself.
11:22How did he speak to you? Come here a second.
11:24He's getting something.
11:25What are you getting?
11:26That's a blade, mate. That's something metal.
11:29The interceptors are on high alert.
11:31What's he arrestable for?
11:32A common assault.
11:33Okay.
11:34See you, Al.
11:35Why, why, why, why is wrong?
11:36Do me a favour.
11:37Why so many people?
11:38Why so many people?
11:39Why so many people?
11:40Okay.
11:41Do you want to just say the word?
11:42You're under arrest, okay, for common assaults.
11:43Okay.
11:44You don't have to say if it would have been harm you to affect you if you don't mention
11:45one question.
11:46Something that you let around the court and if you do say maybe we've given evidence,
11:47all right?
11:48You've assaulted some staff here today as an allegation, so I need to just, we'll get
11:49it sorted, mate.
11:50Just follow my commands for me.
11:51Turn around for me, place your hands on your head.
11:52Mate, please have a taser.
11:53Around 50,000 cops are assaulted in the line of duty each year and Chris has no plans
12:09to be one of them.
12:10But let's just get it sorted, yeah?
12:12Nah, this man.
12:13We're going to take this back now and leave me there.
12:15I don't want to make this any more difficult, right?
12:19You want to make this difficult, right?
12:20You want to make this difficult, you want to make this difficult.
12:23Listen to this.
12:25You're behind me as a taser at the moment, okay?
12:27So I don't want you to do it, I don't want you to do anything silly.
12:31I don't want you to get...
12:32The suspect's not complying and appears to be reaching for something.
12:35Just turn around.
12:36Take your hands out your pockets.
12:37Hands out your pockets, do it now.
12:38Take your hands out your pockets, you've got two red dots on you.
12:41If you pull anything out on you, you're going to get tasered.
12:43I don't want to pull nothing down.
12:44Turn around, put your hands on your bank, do it now.
12:47There you are.
12:48There.
12:49Stay there.
12:50Do not move.
12:51He's got a history of violence and may be armed.
12:54They're running out of options.
12:56Stay back.
12:57Stay back.
12:59Stay back.
13:00Taser, taser.
13:01Taser, taser.
13:02Taser, taser.
13:03Don't move.
13:04Don't move.
13:05Don't move.
13:06Dinger, taser.
13:07Unlock, yes!
13:08C'mon.
13:09Come on.
13:10Don't move.
13:13Hands out your back.
13:1450,000 volts have done their job.
13:17And it's on with the bracelets.
13:19We told you to kick around like this, didn't we?
13:201-1.
13:21Subject secure.
13:23You alright, mate?
13:24You're okay?
13:25Yeah?
13:26I don't know.
13:27You sound.
13:28You sound now?
13:30A taser shock can cause uncontrollable muscle contractions, but the effects soon wear off.
13:36We're going to have to take the barbs out of your face, all right?
13:38Yeah.
13:39Right, ready?
13:40Ready to stand up, mate?
13:41Yeah.
13:41One, two, three, onto your feet.
13:42There we go.
13:43I'll be a little bit sore while we're just taking these barbs out, mate.
13:46A barb from the taser is still in his leg.
13:50Ah, ah, ah.
13:51That one's going to hurt.
13:53Yeah, ah.
13:54And another one's lodged somewhere much more delicate.
13:57Are we going to say leave that one in and HGP do it?
14:00Yeah?
14:01I see you, eh?
14:01Taser pulses can also temporarily affect brain and speech function.
14:06And then for you, you're a paedophile protector.
14:10But this bloke's mouth seems to be working just fine.
14:13Do it.
14:14Get away from me.
14:16The taser team aren't going to let a few barbed comments shock them.
14:20Can you look at that at a good point?
14:21I'm doing fine.
14:22Can you be right at the back of the head?
14:24Fine, my leg.
14:25But while they're happy to take a few insults on the chin...
14:29Can you start that?
14:30...the threats to police property aren't taken so lightly.
14:33Don't start being silly.
14:34Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
14:38Relax.
14:39He's come to the door.
14:40He's hidden intoxicated through something.
14:42Quite aggressive towards us.
14:44We've heard something metallic sounds like a knife, a weapon.
14:46He's putting his hand in his pocket.
14:47He's advancing towards us.
14:48He's been challenged with a taser and he's not stopped.
14:50So he's been tasered.
14:51And he's absolutely fine.
14:53Safely resolved the incident without any harm to anybody.
14:56And he should be off to custody shortly.
14:57Mr. Shortfuse pleaded guilty to three counts of common assault and using threatening behaviour.
15:05He received a 20-week suspended prison sentence, 100 hours of unpaid work and 25 rehab days.
15:12It's a late spring evening in Northampton.
15:31And while most of the town are already home from work, Chris is back on patrol.
15:37This time with Callum Donoghue, they're responding to the first job of their night shift.
15:42We are going to a report of a vehicle driving erratically, a Mercedes A200 at the Holiday Inn on the Bedford Road in Northampton.
15:54The boys hammer it over to the three-star hotel.
16:01To check in on a five-star donut doing laps outside reception.
16:10Hotel guests film the wannabe boy racer complete lap after lap of his very own Holiday Inn Grand Prix.
16:18But this isn't Silverstone.
16:20The whirling donuts know Lewis Hamilton.
16:23And the only points he'll win are the ones likely to go on his licence.
16:31With Chris and Callum still a few miles away,
16:39Donoghue is dizzy enough to need a quick pit stop.
16:46Where he comes face-to-face with another unit.
16:53He can drive in a straight line after all.
16:56The response cops not pursuit trains, so can't follow.
16:58Luckily, Callum's passed every test there is.
17:05And absolutely can.
17:10The target flies past at F1 speeds.
17:17The Merc's in danger of disappearing.
17:21But Callum hits warp drive and reigns him in.
17:29At lane two or two, traffic is medium.
17:31No pedestrians.
17:33DRA is low.
17:34And his proportions continue.
17:36The runaway raises the stakes as he goes wrong side of the tracks.
17:41Offences in question at this time is a domestic twop.
17:46Information comes in that the suspect's in his mum's car.
17:49Left, left, green ATS.
17:51But with driving this bad, he's going to face more than just being grounded.
17:57Victoria Prom, advanced T-pack driver, unmarked advanced vehicle.
18:01Delivery driver ahead, ten o'clock.
18:06High risk temporarily, nearly a collision.
18:12Just eat was nearly dead meat.
18:14The Merc missed him by inches.
18:16And while the boy racer blows a red with no thought for other drivers,
18:24Callum can't afford to be so reckless.
18:29We're held ATS, wait.
18:32The runaway's disregard for the public gives him a big advantage.
18:37Temporary loss.
18:38Keep going straight, keep going straight.
18:39And Chris and Callum have, once again, been held up by traffic.
18:43Straight on, red ATS.
18:45He's continued on past the wee binding car to the offside.
18:49We're held, red ATS, temporary loss.
18:53Again, such a high-risk driver, the odds were always against them on the busy roads.
18:58Have you called up total loss?
19:03Yeah.
19:04It's total loss this time.
19:06Mate, we were never going to keep up with him like that going through the traffic.
19:08But he would drive like a nothing.
19:09But the interceptors know that slippery fish inevitably resurface.
19:16And with a net round the area,
19:18it's not long before they land Mum's 40 grand Merc
19:21and haul in the one that got away.
19:33Donuts down at the Nick,
19:35where Callum and Chris drop in for a few words.
19:40You don't have to say anything,
19:41but it may harm your defence if you don't mention them in question.
19:43Something which you'll let you run in court,
19:45and if you do so, maybe you'll never lose.
19:46The driver received no further action for taking his mum's car.
19:52But for dangerous driving and other unrelated offences,
19:56he received a total of 19 months behind bars
19:58and a 38-month driving back.
20:04It's been a frustrating but ultimately successful end to their shift.
20:10I don't really know why he's driven the way he has.
20:13He's now going to lose his licence for essentially a two-minute pursuit,
20:18which was a really bad decision.
20:20But he's now going to have to deal with the consequences
20:21for the rest of his life.
20:23His insurance is never going to be cheap
20:25and he's probably going to get disqualified for a couple of years for it.
20:28But we all have the choice in life
20:30and he's picked the wrong one today, unfortunately.
20:32Still to come.
20:39OK, he is continuing weaving through the traffic at high speed.
20:43A pursuit across multiple counties.
20:47OK, the vehicle's offered to the services.
20:49Comes to a smashing end for Dan and the team.
20:51This chap's under arrest for Section 4.
20:59He's off his face.
21:00And a drug-fuelled driver on the M1.
21:03What are they?
21:04Antibiotics.
21:05Antibiotics.
21:05Antibiotics.
21:05Antibiotics.
21:06Antibiotics, what for?
21:08Yeah.
21:09Looks to be on more than just prescription medicine.
21:11He is probably one of the most intoxicated people I've seen.
21:16Temporarily high risk through a red ATS.
21:31When a runaway makes a play too dangerous to follow.
21:36It's the board from us.
21:37He's gone the wrong way down Bentwood Bypass.
21:41The interceptors have an ace up their sleeve.
21:46Yeah, Impasse 5-1.
21:48Bedworth Bypass northbound on the wrong way.
21:52Standby.
21:52And with the eye in the sky.
21:55Impasse 5-1.
21:56Crash, crash at Newton Road.
21:58Guiding the game on the ground.
22:00Got two outs.
22:01Standby.
22:02Hey, no!
22:03I'm just flying now!
22:05The person on the ground nearest the road is going to be a driver.
22:09It's always a winning hand.
22:11Impasse is probably one of the most valuable tools that we can use.
22:19Mainly because they can have a bird's eye view of the whole situation, the whole pursuit.
22:27So Impasse just allows us that bit of time to back off, formulate a plan, keep eyes on them, keep commentary and tell us where they are basically.
22:34It's the wee small hours on Monday morning.
22:43And Impasse is tracking a Skoda Octavia on clone plates that's failed to start for the West Midlands force.
22:52Okay, vehicle is still late to M6.
22:56They don't know why the driver's made off, but he's clearly got something to hide.
23:04Light traffic ahead still as he approaches the cally services.
23:08The choppers track the runaway Skoda into Warwickshire.
23:12Vehicle straddling lanes two and three, still passing slow moving vehicle at speed.
23:16And it's heading for north hands at a high rate of knots.
23:19Good comms between air support and the units below will be the key to stopping the target.
23:33North Hamptonshire ground units, including Dan Bradley-Brophy, start to gather a greeting party.
23:55We're just going to head towards the M1 now, just see if we can get in a decent position to try and help out.
23:59Okay, vehicle's moving to lane one near side.
24:05The Skoda's weaving its way towards a warm welcome.
24:08He's undertaking lorries and the slow moving vehicles.
24:13It is just about to approach junction 1M6 over.
24:16Because units from all over the county are plotting up, prying to intercept.
24:22We'll head up to the north of the town just in case it should come off 14 and come down forwards.
24:27North Hamptons.
24:28And he's off on the 508, off on the 508.
24:35However, the suspect's come off the motorway and taken a different route.
24:39Yeah, he's gone into, left into Mercedes Avenue.
24:42Oh, he's just pulling up at the side at the moment, over.
24:46He's either trying to give the interceptors the run around.
24:49And looks to be doing a reciprocal back.
24:51Or is completely lost.
24:56He's just slowing down.
24:57Now he's doing his reciprocal 180 standby.
24:59But there's no escaping the eye in the sky.
25:03Okay, he's back on the roundabout of the A14.
25:05Just half a mile away, Dan joins up with a firearms unit.
25:16Tom, I think I'm with you now.
25:18Tom, I think we've got mobiles now with this vehicle.
25:34The ground units finally have their prey in sight.
25:45Okay, the vehicle's offered to the services north side of the A14.
25:49Just up towards the lorry part.
25:51He's going the wrong way down the road.
25:52They clearly haven't a scooby where they're going or that North Hand's finest are about to pounce.
26:00Look to reinforce.
26:03When the driver pulls onto the garage forecourt,
26:06the cops have a prime opportunity to bring this two-hour cross-country pursuit to a close.
26:20I think I'm with you.
26:22The driver...
26:52And Passenger are finally in bracelets, despite their best efforts to escape with a reverse ram.
27:06And having tracked these guys for over 75 miles,
27:11the eye in the sky bows out.
27:16Back on the ground, it becomes clear why they've been so shy of a meet-up with the cops.
27:27That's absolutely free of care.
27:29Yeah, yeah.
27:30So in the back of the car it looks like a load of gear that we suggest relates to cannabis grows.
27:35So we've got plants, lamps, all that sort of stuff.
27:39So whether they've emptied it, stolen it, we'll find out.
27:43But I've never got too in there custody for it at the moment, so great work.
27:48These guys could have robbed a cannabis farm, or it could be their own crop.
27:53Either way, they're in it up to their necks.
27:58Stand up, Bob.
27:59So I don't want you standing up with your hands behind your back, mate, because you'll fall over.
28:03Your trousers are also around your knees, mate.
28:04That'd be funny, I'll be trying to fly, we'll get some more of everything.
28:08He's a happy soul, but the contents of his footwells are far from funny.
28:12In the car.
28:14There's a big coffee knife on the footwell and a carry bag full of cannabis as well, so...
28:18There'll be a few hundred quid's worth of cannabis there.
28:21These two herberts are clearly up to no good tonight.
28:24While Dan likes a trip to the zoo, his real preference is to see criminals behind bars.
28:31And one of the herberts has a confession.
28:34The weed's mine, yeah?
28:35I ain't fussed.
28:37I can't lie.
28:38If these I didn't get it, then I would have made it into Edivos, yeah?
28:42Masterchef's coughed to the weed and the exhaustive search continues.
28:48It's that catalytic converter, is it?
28:53I don't care about no longer.
28:55As for the herberts, their cross-country jaunt is over, thanks to North Hans and a little help from above.
29:01Good teamwork between us, so...
29:05And obviously, Impasse kept observations out all the way through, so without them, I think we potentially could have lost that.
29:11So, yeah, fantastic.
29:12The case for possession of a knife in a public place and possession of cannabis was transferred to another force.
29:24Following an investigation, the suspects received no further action due to insufficient evidence.
29:29Do you take drugs at all?
29:36No.
29:37Once upon a time, it was tough to prove a driver was under the influence of drugs.
29:42Just get some saliva on the end of the tunnel for me.
29:45That all changed in 2015 with the introduction of a lick and nick game-changer.
29:52It's testing positive for cocaine.
29:54The roadside drug wipe.
29:56So, at this moment in time, the under-arrest, okay, I'm suspicious of a drug drive.
30:04Before, it was simply down to doing a FIT test, so a field impairment test.
30:09And that's where you get people at the side of the road putting their finger on their nose and trying to balance.
30:13We were sort of limited with how easy it was to detect the drug.
30:16But with the drug wipe screening device, it would tell us at the side of the road pretty accurately if they're over the limit for cannabis and cocaine.
30:26Drug wipes have driven a steady rise in convictions of drivers influenced by coke or weed.
30:33Unfortunately, some drivers use other drugs, and catching them is a bigger challenge.
30:43It's the morning shift, and Interceptor Tom Williams is invisible on the M1.
30:48We're in the unmarked car today.
30:50Advantages of the unmarked car is obviously people don't know we're there, so it's kind of seeing people's true driving, and it just gives us that element of surprise.
31:01Touch of wood so far, everyone's been fairly well behaved.
31:04It's a sunny day with clear roads.
31:07Roger.
31:08But things look less rosy a few junctions ahead.
31:12I'm called from the Hardways Agency that they've got a car that's in the live lane with a driver unresponsive.
31:19Have to see what he's like when we get there.
31:22Here we go.
31:27Show me 10-6.
31:30We should put the matrix board on.
31:31The driver's out of the car, and all over the shop.
31:48Hello.
31:49Hello.
31:50How are you?
31:51Are you all right?
31:51Are you all right?
31:51What's going on?
31:53I don't know.
31:54What are you here for?
31:58I don't know.
32:00Come and have a seat in my car for two seconds, mate.
32:02I'm just going to grab hold of your hand, because you're very...
32:04No, no.
32:05No, he's not filming me.
32:06No, he's not filming you, he's filming me.
32:08All right?
32:09Yeah, he's filming me.
32:10It's a moment in time you're under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs, all right?
32:13Pass me that hand.
32:16Pass me that hand.
32:19I'll be putting the clothes around.
32:21Cheers, buddy.
32:23Let go of your vape.
32:24Let go of your vape.
32:25As I say, you're under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs at the moment in time.
32:33In case you don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence.
32:35Do you want to mention when questioned something which is allowed in court, anything you do say may be in evidence, all right?
32:39Are those handcuffs all right for you?
32:41All right.
32:41I'm just going to sit you in the back of my car.
32:426-1, you've got an ETA 4-1-1?
32:48Just coming up to 15 now, mate.
32:51Lovely.
32:51Cheers, mate.
32:52This chap's under arrest for section 4.
32:54He's off his face.
32:56Just might need a hand with transport, if that's all right.
32:59He might need a hand with transport to Tom's car.
33:03Cheers, mate.
33:05All right, you plonk yourself in there for two seconds, mate.
33:08All right.
33:08Is it your car, mate?
33:09Yeah.
33:10Yeah.
33:10Watch your head.
33:12Just before you get in, let me just quickly give you a search.
33:14Just stand up a sec, bud.
33:15What have you got on you?
33:17What?
33:17What have you got on you?
33:18Just cigarettes?
33:20No.
33:20What are they?
33:22Antibiotics.
33:23Antibiotics.
33:24Antibiotics.
33:24What for?
33:25Yeah.
33:26What for?
33:28No.
33:29What for?
33:30It looks like he's on more than antibiotics.
33:32Do you want to take a seat in there for me?
33:35The question is, what?
33:37Pop that foot in there, mate.
33:38What's going on?
33:39Are you under arrest at this moment, Tom, on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs?
33:43All right?
33:45And the reason being, you're very unsteady on your feet, okay?
33:48Your speech is very slurred, and you've got white powder all up your nose.
33:52Okay.
33:52Okay?
33:53Could be a tough case to crack.
33:55Are you known to the police for anything, mate?
33:56Say it again.
34:00Are you named to the police for anything?
34:02No.
34:02Have you got any medical problems, anything like that?
34:05No.
34:05No, you're all good, yeah?
34:06No.
34:06Six-one.
34:07Six-one.
34:07I think, do you say an ambulance was called?
34:09If so, you can cancel them.
34:10There's nothing on this bloke.
34:11I think he's just under influence of drugs rather than anything medical.
34:15Copy.
34:16His behaviour isn't consistent with cocaine or cannabis use.
34:20He's more spaced out.
34:22Though Spaceman is occasionally coming back to Earth.
34:25Oh, no way.
34:28What?
34:30We're being filmed for this.
34:31Say it again, bud.
34:32Yeah.
34:34Tom isn't bothering with the roadside drug wipe, as he suspects this guy is on something
34:39other than coke or weed.
34:41And he has the right to haul him into the neck for a blood test.
34:44Right, what the plan is going to be, just waiting for my colleagues to come down, okay?
34:48Then we're going to be taking you to custody, okay?
34:51Yeah, you understand that?
34:52It's pretty clear.
34:56Say it again.
34:57So my colleagues are going to be coming here very shortly and we're going to be taking
35:00you to custody.
35:01Police station.
35:02Okay.
35:03Okay.
35:03We need to do some procedures with you in terms of you potentially being under the influence
35:08of drink or drugs, all right, mate?
35:11I'm going to go to prison alone.
35:13No, not necessarily, mate.
35:15I don't think so.
35:17The driver has a date with custody, where a blood test should provide
35:22some answers.
35:23I think he's said to our Highway's colleagues that he's taken ketamine.
35:29Which might not be necessary.
35:31It turns out spacemans told Highway's he's spaced out on ketamine, an anaesthetic that distorts
35:38perception of sight and sound.
35:40Basically, the M1's worst nightmare.
35:42I know Highway said that he was unfit, but he is probably one of the most intoxicated
35:49people I've seen.
35:51Clearly not fit to drive.
35:54Can't speak, can't walk, and has got the remnants of, obviously, a good night last night up his
35:59nose still.
35:59So, thankfully, he's only crashed into the barrier and not someone else, because I think
36:05he potentially could have caused some serious problems on the motorway.
36:09But thankfully, we've got him now, and we'll deal with him.
36:12And once Rachel searches the car, there's potentially more to deal with.
36:16Under caution, he's lucky he's not under six feet of soil.
36:39He's lucky he hasn't killed himself, but he's lucky he hasn't killed anyone else.
36:44Come to rest in lane one of the M1.
36:47At least we've got him.
36:47No one's hurt.
36:48He's not hurt.
36:49We'll take it to custody and look after him there.
36:51We're good to go, mate.
36:52All right.
36:53We're going.
36:54The spaceman who landed himself on the M1 pleaded guilty to drug driving and received
37:00an eight-week suspended sentence and a 29-month driving ban.
37:04He also received a community resolution for possession of a Class B drug.
37:09No surprises there, given he coughed up to taking ketamine.
37:13That is used normally as a horse tranquilizer, to put animals under sedation.
37:19So the fact that he's been driving whilst basically sedated, beggars belief, if he hadn't
37:23crashed into the barrier and crashed into a family driving, we potentially could have
37:27been looking at the fatalities on the motorway.
37:29You're driving a two-ton killing machine, but you've got no awareness of what you're doing.
37:34It's just a recipe for disaster, in my opinion.
37:41Still to come.
37:43Oh, I wonder if it was a dip.
37:45What?
37:45Some crisp.
37:45You don't need to sweat.
37:47A motorist with the munchies in Wellingborough.
37:50That's it.
37:51You've tested positive for cannabis.
37:53So this might have a positive address about two hours ago.
37:55Number plate cloning is a growing problem in the UK.
38:14The cops are keen to end that trend, and in Wellingborough, firearms units have just stopped
38:19a voxel Astra they suspect to be on false plates.
38:23Sandra Payne and Joe Wood are heading over to assist.
38:26It's pulled over as if it was stopping, taking a natural stop, and then as they've put the
38:33lights on next to it, it's made off, albeit briefly.
38:37And the clone could just be to disguise documents offences, or it could be more sinister, used
38:44in crime.
38:46Sinister or otherwise, Joe and Sandra are en route.
38:49The clone-mobile contains four wannabe TV stars.
39:06We're on Interceptors, man.
39:08Yeah, two off.
39:08Oh, we're on Interceptors, Wayne.
39:11How are you doing, all right?
39:12I'm fine.
39:13Oh, we're on Interceptors.
39:14Big up.
39:17Hey, that is mad.
39:18What's your name, chap?
39:19Jamie.
39:20Jamie Norris.
39:22Joe deals with one of the passengers.
39:24This chap's been detained for a Section 1 search.
39:30While Sandra tackles the driver.
39:33And where are you from?
39:34I'm from London.
39:35You are from London.
39:36He's already been arrested for no licence or insurance, so it could be a long walk home.
39:42What are you doing in Wellingborough at the minute, then?
39:44What's the purpose of your journey tonight?
39:46No comment.
39:47No comment.
39:48Tricky types, like the no comment kid, don't face a pro like Sandra, whose least favourite
39:54customers are drink and drug drivers.
39:57Because you briefly fell to stop, I'm going to ask you to provide me with a specimen of
40:00breath.
40:01Have you had an alcoholic drink in the last 20 minutes?
40:03Have you had any mouthwash, dental preparation, cigarette or e-cigarette in the last five?
40:07No, no, no.
40:08I did want one just now.
40:10Was that because of the stress?
40:12Yeah, you've got to stress me out, because now I've got to find my way home with a foot
40:15in that.
40:16Keep going, keep going, keep going.
40:20I'm pushing it out of my mouth.
40:23That's zero.
40:24Zero.
40:25I told you.
40:27There's no booze in his blood, but there's something dodgy in his boot.
40:31The cops suspect these are the Vauxhall's genuine plates.
40:34I didn't take my glasses off, I could shut up.
40:39He's remarkably chipper for a man facing multiple charges.
40:44I'm excited, because I've never been on TV.
40:48Am I free to go, yeah?
40:50Yeah, just stay away from these guys.
40:52The bit parked passengers exit stage left for the long trip home, but there's a soft bed
40:57at the nick for the star of the small screen.
41:00A lime cigarette?
41:01No, you're under arrest.
41:03It's not allowed.
41:04And it's not just fags on the superstar's rider.
41:08All I wanted was a bit.
41:09What?
41:09Some crisps.
41:10You don't need to swear.
41:11It's about a rope?
41:12Yeah.
41:13Denied treats, his mood seems to be changing.
41:16I appreciate that.
41:16Yeah, no, but I've tried to be nice.
41:18I have tried to be nice.
41:19Have I not?
41:20I've not been disrespectful, not once.
41:22You're going to let me speak?
41:22Not once.
41:23You're going to let me speak?
41:23No, I'm not even going to speak no more, because it's just, you know what?
41:26The respect is not being shown back.
41:28OK.
41:28Joe's return with the packet.
41:30Unfortunately for the driver, it doesn't contain any crisps.
41:34Have you done a drug wipe before?
41:36What?
41:36Have you done a drug wipe before?
41:38I've never heard of that.
41:38No, you did a breath test for alcohol.
41:41So, because I've got reasonable grounds to suspect that you've committed a moving traffic
41:44offence under the terms of Section 6 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and requiring you
41:48to provide a sample of saliva for a roadside drug wipe.
41:52What if I don't?
41:53Failure to do so without a reasonable excuse is an offence and will render you liable to
41:56prosecution.
41:58Do you agree to provide a sample of saliva for a roadside drug wipe?
42:00Not yet.
42:01I want my solicitor.
42:01And if not, what is your reason for refusing?
42:03I want a solicitor first, please.
42:05OK.
42:06Luckily, Joe knows a bit about the law.
42:08Requesting a solicitor is not a reasonable excuse.
42:10If there's anything more, I want a solicitor.
42:13That's it.
42:14So, I'll ask you one more time.
42:15Are you willing at this moment?
42:16I'm willing.
42:17I'm willing, but not at this point.
42:18OK.
42:19So, because you're not willing to provide me with a sample here and there.
42:22You can hear me on camera.
42:23I am not refusing.
42:24I am not refusing.
42:26And that'll be liable, don't I?
42:27And to really prove he's not refusing.
42:29Go on, take the saliva.
42:31Go on.
42:31Sit down, buddy.
42:32Take the saliva.
42:33I don't want to sit down no more.
42:35I'm done with sitting down.
42:36Well, you do need to calm yourself down, though, because you're getting yourself a bit excitable
42:38for not much of a reason.
42:41Just stop talking to me and then I'll be fine.
42:44He seems to like opening his mouth, which is perfect for Joe.
42:48Stick your tongue out.
42:50Nice and far.
42:51Right out.
42:55That's it.
42:57You were all smiley a minute ago.
42:59What?
42:59After a cigarette.
43:00That's it.
43:01Took your saliva ting.
43:02Take me to the station.
43:03Let's go.
43:05The saliva ting takes eight minutes to come through.
43:09Plenty of time to get to know each other a little better.
43:12What's your name?
43:13Oh?
43:15What's your name?
43:17Me.
43:18Joe.
43:18Joe?
43:19Mm-hmm.
43:20Nice to meet you, Joe.
43:21You too.
43:22What's your name?
43:22Sandra.
43:23Sandra.
43:23Nice to meet you too, Sandra.
43:24And Joe.
43:25Nice to meet you too, camera lady.
43:27And now we're all best friends.
43:29Let's hope we never meet again.
43:31What is it?
43:32We can't swerve tough conversations.
43:35See it says CL there, control line.
43:37That means that for cannabis and cocaine, the test is working, which is why there's a line at each.
43:41Yeah, so what is it?
43:42Unfortunately for you, also under TL, which is trace line, there's also a sign for cannabis,
43:47which means that you've tested positive for cannabis.
43:49Yeah, I did have a pop of a drink that two hours ago.
43:52So at this moment in time, then, 23 or further under arrest on suspicion of driving worse
43:58over the prescribed, didn't it?
43:59No worries.
43:59I was nearly lucky, though, wasn't it?
44:00Of a controlled drug, or specified drug.
44:03Just remind you that you are under caution, OK?
44:05Yeah, no problem.
44:06It's been a bad night for him, but he's trying to look at the positives.
44:11Oh, well.
44:13Night away from the kids, eh?
44:15Good night's sleep.
44:16Sleepyhead's nightmare turned into a reality when he was banned for 12 months for drug driving
44:24and without a licence or insurance and on fraudulent plates.
44:31He was up and down, wasn't he?
44:33He wasn't happy with me when the drug wipe came out.
44:35And then at the suggestion that he might not be coming into the cells if he passed it,
44:39he was all nice again.
44:41But it didn't work out for him in the end, so, no, good result, getting him off the street.
44:46Oh, well, good night's sleep.
