The carpenter Geppetto is very poor and lives alone. One day, his neighbor and colleague, Master Cherry, gives him a piece of walnut wood, from which he carves a puppet overnight. The next day, the wooden puppet has become a living boy, Pinocchio. Geppetto is happy to finally have a son and even sells his only jacket to buy a spelling book for Pinocchio and send him to school. He, however, is much more interested in Mangiafuoco's traveling theater and sells the book to attend one of his shows. When Mangiafuoco learns of Pinocchio's poor origins, he is displeased, frees the boy, and gives him five gold thalers. The cat and the fox will take advantage of his gullible naiveté and steal it.
