Fred Minnick is one of the most knowledgeable people in America when it comes to whiskey. In this video, on the Biscuits & Jam podcast, Fred Minnick shares some of the history behind the fabled Old Crow bourbon and the mysterious Dr. James Crow that created it. Many other influences were present in the wine and spirits world at the time, but his impact can’t be understated.

00:00You could make the argument that bourbon as we know it could be called Crow whiskey.
00:05Now, you could also make the argument it could be called Beam because of the influence that the Beam family had with so many Beams out there.
00:11But there was not a singular individual that had more of an impact on how whiskey was made in the 1800s than James C. Crow.
00:19This man is heralded as the guy who introduced sour mash to the industrial side in the 1840s and 1850s.
00:29He was the most sought-after distiller, and his name was actually branded in the barrels, and people were seeking out what they called Crow whiskey.
