00:00I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:30Welcome again to The Big Match,
00:45and today we feature the dramatic game
00:47between Queen's Park Rangers, the First Division leaders,
00:49and Manchester City.
00:50And from that game, we have two guests,
00:52Mike Doyle, the skipper of Manchester City,
00:54and here in the studio with us, Don Masson,
00:56the Queen's Park Rangers midfield man.
00:58We support that game with the important one
01:00from the top of the Second Division
01:01as Bolton Wanderers take on Chelsea,
01:03and for our third match, we bring you the goals
01:05as Coventry City meet Newcastle United.
01:08Also today, the final six in our Golden Goals competition of 1976,
01:12and it's today that you can start to vote.
01:15But first, we pick up the action at Loftus Road.
01:16Queen's Park Rangers against Manchester City
01:18where our two guests today both laboured under something of a handicap.
01:21Don Masson with a swollen right ankle,
01:23you can see the strapping there under the sock,
01:24an injury he'd received in training earlier in the week.
01:28And for Manchester City, of course, their skipper, Mike Doyle,
01:31who comes to this game suffering from German measles
01:34that was already attacking him when he played for England on Wednesday.
01:37Now the two teams,
01:38Queen's Park Rangers without full-back Dave Clement suspended,
01:41so Don Shanks gets his first game of the season.
01:43Skipper Jerry Francis is back,
01:44having recovered from a heel injury.
01:46Mick leaches the sub.
01:47So that then is the Queen's Park Rangers' line-up.
01:50But what about Manchester City?
01:51In their side is a 17-year-old, Gary Owen, at number eight,
01:54only his second game.
01:56Colin Bell and Dave Watson both missing still,
01:58a team that is lying sixth in the table.
02:00The referee today is Terry Boese,
02:03who comes from Wolverhampton.
02:04And in the crowd, the England team manager, Don Reavy.
02:07There he is towards the back there.
02:09And there's also a whole handful of Queen's Park Rangers fans
02:11from Scandinavia,
02:12who come here regularly on a weekend package trip
02:15in all 29,983,
02:1717 short of a full house.
02:21So Rangers in the hoops kick-off,
02:23attacking the goal to our left.
02:25Manchester City in red and black striped shirts.
02:29And Rangers beginning now this crucial run-in
02:31towards the league championship.
02:33Top of the table, here's Jerry Francis now.
02:35Six games to go, four of them at home.
02:38And obviously crucial to them
02:40that they pick up every possible point,
02:42particularly in their home games.
02:45Playing against the league cup holders,
02:47here's Bowles.
02:48Now Willie Donerkey for Manchester City.
02:51No goals when the teams met at Main Road earlier this season.
02:55Rangers obviously badly want to improve on that.
02:59Here's Masson.
03:02Beaten by a combination of Manchester City players
03:05and Barnes now,
03:06and Donerkey right up there.
03:08Played back for Alan Oaks.
03:11Now it'll come for Dave Tass.
03:14Ball for Jerry Francis.
03:15Givens, Givens a way out on the rough.
03:20Blue's backing off.
03:21Thomas going outside him again.
03:23And Givens taking it a little too far there.
03:25Blustery wind here at Loftus Road today,
03:32particularly out there in the middle.
03:35Lisa Hartford for Peter Barnes.
03:38In for Alan Oaks from Manchester City.
03:40Himself six in the table.
03:42Head out by John Hollins.
03:43Nice bit of play.
03:44Masson.
03:45Francis.
03:48Play on.
03:49Shanks.
03:52Back in top.
03:54He's been through all these pressures before.
03:58Givens.
03:59Taken nicely on his body.
04:00Gillard making the run down the left.
04:03A little bit of acceleration.
04:04The ball wouldn't quite run for him.
04:06Keegan.
04:07Commence it.
04:08Hartford.
04:09Gary Owen.
04:1217 years old.
04:15Gillard.
04:17Oh, he's playing it off the main for Gillard.
04:22Webb's hit.
04:27Owen versus Webb.
04:29And a foul by David Webb on the 17-year-old.
04:33And a free kick to Manchester City.
04:41Flicked on by Tewart.
04:42Here's Royal now for Manchester City.
04:44And a shot that called for a save from Phil Fox.
04:53Givens.
04:56Masson.
04:56Nice play.
04:59Bowles.
05:01Also nice play.
05:02But can Thomas get to this one?
05:07Not quite.
05:09As he heard of the photographers.
05:10It was a nice and interesting move down that left flank for QPR.
05:14Involving Masson and Bowles doing some good work.
05:16The Manchester City man, of course, himself, Stan Bowles.
05:35Here's Hartford.
05:37And now Donatley.
05:38Well, that'll go into the path of Asa Hartford again.
05:46Well, couldn't quite turn it back.
05:47Webb.
05:48Simple job.
05:51Now Hollings.
05:52Bowles and Givens.
06:12Bowles again.
06:15Jerry Francis gone on the far side of that area.
06:17And Francis is there with a header.
06:19Booth.
06:27Stopped by Masson.
06:30Stan Bowles is header.
06:32The feet were very high there, both by Francis and by Donaghy.
06:35I think it was a genuine attempt for two men to go for the same ball.
06:40Without a great malicious intent.
06:43Although the referee is bringing out the book.
06:46And he's booking Jerry Francis.
06:50In spite of the prodigations of Mike Doyle, Jerry Francis goes into the book.
06:57I'm bound to say that seems a little harsh to me.
07:01And I think if you book him, you've also got to book Willie Donaghy, who came in with his feet equally high.
07:12Unless it was something that Francis did after that particular incident.
07:14But a free kick then to Manchester City.
07:21Doyle with it.
07:22Curled towards Booth.
07:23It had gone right up there.
07:24And Joe Royal.
07:25Off the top of Royal's head.
07:27Goal kick.
07:35Jerry Francis still having a word with the referee about that bookie.
07:38Toss.
07:56Well, obstruction in the area.
07:58That had to be an indirect free kick, surely.
08:01But it wasn't given.
08:03And Masson now takes it up again for Rangers.
08:06Now there's a bit of space here for Thomas again.
08:09And the cross off Mike Doyle for the corner to QPR.
08:18Pentock up.
08:19Webb also up.
08:22And Joe Royal going back to add a bit of height in that Manchester City defence.
08:35Doyle organising.
08:36Thomas with the corner.
08:38Masson.
08:42Shanks.
08:44Nice ball there played by Shanks for Thomas.
08:46He can really take him on.
08:47And he's beaten Owen this time.
08:49Oh, a tremendous shot across the face of the goal.
08:51That wanted a touch.
08:52And in fact, it was Webb and McClintock, the two defenders,
08:55who were right in that city six-yard area who couldn't quite apply the touch.
08:58There's Keegan.
08:59There's Keegan.
09:02Come on, guys.
09:04Come on.
09:06Royal.
09:08That's Masson's.
09:11Nice ball there.
09:12Beautifully weighted there by Masson for Francis.
09:14Equally so for Don Givens onto the left foot.
09:16Oh, he'll be annoyed with that.
09:23It was a lovely move.
09:26And the ball will take a fair bit of retrieving from that schoolyard.
09:29Right across that terracing from the ground.
09:35A lovely move.
09:36Played beautifully into the path of Givens.
09:38And just where he likes to have them.
09:40On his left foot.
09:40And he'll be annoyed that he didn't do better than that.
09:45And a substitution being made for Manchester City.
09:48Joe Royal is going off.
09:50Injured a couple of three minutes ago.
09:53Kenny Clements coming off.
09:55Kenny Clements, who used to be an assistant groundsman at Main Road.
10:05Now it's with Aita Hartford.
10:08Clements.
10:09Hartford.
10:10But he's had a terrific season for Manchester City.
10:12But he lost it there.
10:14To McClintock.
10:14And here's Thomas.
10:18Bowles playing it back again for Dave Thomas.
10:21Gerard Keegan going with him.
10:24Doyle filling in behind.
10:25Oh, great shot.
10:30And Gary Owen gets it away.
10:32But that really was a lovely piece of play again.
10:35By Dave Thomas.
10:36With a tremendous whiplash shot at the end of it.
10:38Gary nearly went home.
10:43Gibbons now for Bowles.
10:45Played wide again.
10:46Once more for Dave Thomas.
10:51Back this time for Jerry Francis.
10:52And again for Thomas.
10:56Gillard going up fast.
10:57Good run.
10:58Well timed.
10:58Oh, and across the face of the goal.
11:00He wanted a touch from Masson.
11:02And didn't quite get it.
11:03Still in play on that far side.
11:12Good low cross into the arms this time of Corrigan.
11:15But a beautifully timed run a moment ago from Ian Gillard.
11:19And the low cross coming in that six yard area.
11:21Don Masson was closest to it.
11:23But couldn't get the touch.
11:26Shanks.
11:27Free kick.
11:31He's done well.
11:32Don Shanks the number two.
11:33Can't be easy to come into a side like QPR.
11:36So close to the end of the season when it means so much to them.
11:39For his first game.
11:40But he's done really well.
11:41McClintock.
11:42Go with him with the free kick.
11:43Givens right up there.
11:44Webb right up there.
11:45Hollins there too.
11:45Oh, my goodness.
11:48How did that fail to go in?
11:52Beautiful break by Rangers.
11:54Hollins was right on it.
11:56It looked to be going into the goal.
11:57Hit the post.
11:58Came back.
11:59Webb tried to get it in.
12:01But fouled Corrigan.
12:07Donerke.
12:10Clements.
12:12Now a four for McClintock.
12:14And out by Goal.
12:15Now this is one for Parks to gather.
12:21Which he does.
12:23All in one movement.
12:24Ryan's day close.
12:30Francis.
12:32Masson urging Shanks to go forward.
12:36There's Thomas.
12:38Free kick.
12:40It was a very tough challenge by Hartford on Thomas there.
12:43A free kick to Rangers.
12:56About a minute to go to half time.
13:01There's no better time to nick a goal than now.
13:05And we won't do it by getting offside.
13:06There's no better time to go to the court.
13:07There's no better time to go to the court.
13:08There's no better time to go to the court.
13:09There's no better time to go to the court.
13:10There's no better time to go to the court.
13:10There's no better time to go to the court.
13:11There's no better time to go to the court.
13:12There's no better time to go to the court.
13:13There's no better time to go to the court.
13:14There's no better time to go to the court.
13:15There's no better time to go to the court.
13:16There's no better time to go to the court.
13:17There's no better time to go to the court.
13:18There's no better time to go to the court.
13:19There's no better time to go to the court.
13:20There's no better time to go to the court.
13:21There's no better time to go to the court.
13:22and Webb cutting it out
13:37Oaks turning it back
13:39Gillard's header this time
13:40Jerry Francis
13:41Bold
13:42beautiful touch there by Bold
13:44nice play there by Francis
13:45beautifully forgiven
13:47Thomas outside
13:48it's more like it from Rangers
13:50a good shot but straight
13:53at Joe Collins
13:54hit firmly with power but straight at the big man
13:58a lovely sweeping move
14:01from one end of the field to the other by Queen's Park Rangers
14:03ending up with that Thomas shot
14:09as the whistle goes
14:10for half time
14:11Rangers have had the better of it
14:13but have nothing to show for it
14:15twice they've hit the woodwork
14:16once with John Hollins
14:18and once when Alan Oaks
14:19hit it against his own crossbar
14:21so there's still everything to play for
14:23in fact Jerry Francis is looking for something at the moment
14:26something that is obviously
14:29probably a medal that he had round his neck
14:32and the referee had it all the time
14:33well that solved that little mystery at any rate
14:36so we leave it with a half time score then
14:39at Loftus Road
14:40that reads Prince Park Rangers 0
14:41Manchester City 0
14:43and we'll be right back for the second half
14:44so welcome back to Loftus Road
14:56as Manchester City now
14:57kick off and attack the goal
14:59to our left
14:59a crucial 45 minutes here
15:01for Queen's Park Rangers
15:02as Givens now finds Dave Thomas
15:04a really critical 45 minutes for QPR
15:15they've got to get a breakthrough
15:16and I suppose if it goes on without a breakthrough
15:18the man they might well look to
15:20is Mick Leach the substitute
15:21who's got something of a lucky charm
15:22of coming on and scoring vital goals
15:24as he did at Everton
15:25balls
15:26Francis
15:27bowls again
15:29Francis again
15:30Gibbons with a shot
15:32oh a magnificent save by Joe Corrigan
15:36well it was delicate play inside the box there
15:41and it fell to the left for the Gibbons
15:43a tremendous shot
15:45and a very good save
15:47and now Rangers with the corner
15:52Corrigan brought up a really superhuman effort there, no wonder he smiles, that really was
16:03a brilliant save. Thomas hit low again, really looked like getting through though, Masson,
16:16Gillard there, referee right to allow that play to go on.
16:22Thomas crossing it once more, now for McClintock, oh that ball tantalisingly just bouncing
16:29that half yard away from him.
16:34Suddenly saw it there as a real chance and it never really became one.
16:37Donerkey, Webb, Hollands. Hartford is having a go at Hollands, he's been called to the referee.
16:49I told you before were the first words. Right.
17:01Right.
17:10Right.
17:13Good.
17:16Good.
17:21Great.
17:22Good.
17:32That frosty series
17:34Francis is through, and that, again, didn't quite fall for him, so he nearly did.
17:40Oh, that's good.
18:10And a bit of an upset there as Thomas is involved with Hartford, and look at that, and the referee is having a trouble there, separating the ball, helped by members from the Manchester City bench, and the fighting's going on there, all starting from nothing.
18:25Donaghy was involved too, being pulled away by Tommy Booth, and a policeman now involved with a fan who tried to get on too.
18:37And the tension really coming to the surface there, and what's the referee going to do about it? He's calling Asa Hartford, and he's got David Thomas as well.
18:54Now, Hartford has been spoken to pretty severely once or twice, by referee Bozzi.
19:02And he's sent him off.
19:12Hartford has been sent on.
19:22And Mike Doyle implying the referee what that was about, and shouldn't he be doing something about Rangers as well?
19:26And Hartford goes off.
19:33A real clear-up that came almost out of nothing there, but again shows what a terribly tense business it is when you're chasing the Football League Championship.
19:42Now, can Rangers, with a quarter of an hour left, facing ten men, get this vital goal?
19:53Gerry Francis in there, Doyle in there, Wade is in there, and Francis is there, and across the barrel, and still it didn't go, into the net.
20:02Corrigan now arguing fiercely with the referee.
20:04Well, that looked a sure thing for Gerry Francis, when Webb finally managed to make the ball go his way.
20:15Screwed it across the face of the goal, and missed the bar post, by no more than a couple of feet.
20:21Tension everywhere on this field, and I would think in the director's box as well.
20:25Jim Gregory at the bottom right there, the Rangers chairman.
20:29He suffers more than most chairmen.
20:30But he very, very, stays right to the end, but the tension is great.
20:37I wonder if he'll do it today.
20:40So it's Donaghy now.
20:47Good run.
20:48Not a bad shot.
20:49And it needed a good save.
20:53Donaghy kept going.
21:00Now Masson.
21:04Hollins right up.
21:06Pushing everybody forward now.
21:08Goals versus Doyle again.
21:10And Doyle has not put a foot.
21:13Suffering from German measles since Thursday.
21:16A rash right across the part of his body.
21:20Across his chest.
21:22So he can feel all that well, but he really has played well today.
21:24Good run.
21:24Good run.
21:25Good run.
21:25Good run.
21:26Good run.
21:26Good run.
21:27Good run.
21:27Good run.
21:27Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:28Good run.
21:29Good run.
21:29Good run.
21:29Good run.
21:30Good run.
21:30Good run.
22:00All forward, Masson and Collins, behind it, behind Don Masson, floating it in there towards David Webb, there he is, Webb has done it.
22:30David Webb has scored the vital goal, that desperate down of a footballer, and that's the fourth time this season he has scored what could be a very important winning goal.
22:45A little free kick, Webb was there first, a backward click with his head, over Corrigan, into the Met, 1-0.
22:51Now Francis, 9 minutes to go.
23:10Francis, Masson there, Tommy Mubo for Manchester City.
23:16Now it's going to be a few strong nerves right around this ground, amongst the Rangers fans, and management.
23:33And McClintock is injured, and not least, strong nerves in the directors' box as well.
23:39Well, Don Revy wouldn't have seen that goal, it looks as though he's already gone.
23:50And what is of more pressing importance for Rangers, as the Frank McClintock seems to be hurt.
23:58And Mick Leach already beginning to strip off.
24:00And McClintock, in real trouble, and that could just add to the tension now for Queen's Park Rangers.
24:18A man who really epitomises strength of Rangers in defence, Frank McClintock.
24:26And now they've got to do without him, for the vital remaining seven minutes.
24:33And Mick Leach, who never really has let the club down, comes on as substitute.
24:37But it means a slight rearrangement.
24:40And now Bowe's onside.
24:45What a lovely ball there for Mick Leach!
24:47That's the value of having this man as a substitute, he comes on and he's such a triumph.
24:56Such a beautiful piece of play again.
24:59By Coles.
25:01For Leach.
25:03Now we spoke about the pressure in the directors' box, as I said.
25:06The chairman very often can't see the game right through to the end.
25:09And here we are, two minutes from the end, and he's had enough.
25:11He can't stand any more.
25:13And here's Tommy Bo.
25:14Manchester City, who's still to play Derby and Liverpool at home.
25:22And after this game against Queen's Park Rangers, they've still got to play Manchester United away.
25:26So they are going to have an enormous say in this First Division Championship.
25:33Just a little bit muddled there at the moment, Queen's Park Rangers, these last seconds.
25:38There's the long ball, sending Boulds off in pursuit.
25:41Royal is there again.
25:42And it's all over, two priceless points for Queen's Park Rangers.
25:47A goal coming from their number six, David Webb.
25:50Being hugged by his former Chelsea teammate, John Hollis.
25:55Just a quarter of an hour or so from the end.
25:57So a very, very valuable win for Rangers.
26:05And it looked for so long in the game that they weren't going to have the luck that they required.
26:10Hitting the post twice.
26:11And Frank McClintock being helped off the field.
26:13A man who did so much at the back to keep Rangers playing good, relaxed football, which got his reward in the end with that goal by David Webb.
26:24So what could be a really momentous afternoon ends with a victory for Queen's Park Rangers.
26:31A final scoreline then at Loftus Road.
26:35Queen's Park Rangers 1, Manchester City 0.
26:38So Rangers won.
26:40And with the other top four all winning at home, it was just as well.
26:43Frank McClintock's injury, by the way, was in fact a twisted ankle.
26:46Rangers, though, are optimistic that he'll be fit for next Saturday's game at Newcastle.
26:50The Manchester City skipper Mike Doyle has already tipped Queen's Park Rangers for the championship earlier this weekend.
26:54And after the game, I asked him if he'd seen anything in this afternoon to change his mind.
26:59Still fancy them, Brian.
27:01I think they've got a great run-in now.
27:04And they needed two points today especially.
27:06I think because all the other top teams were at home.
27:09So they couldn't afford to let one slip.
27:11And fortunately, they got one.
27:13Well, they got the two, didn't they?
27:14And when they didn't particularly look like getting them.
27:17Were you impressed by them today?
27:18I wasn't impressed by them today, no, but I have been.
27:21And I still think they'll win the league.
27:23Did you gather there was much tension amongst the players out there on the field?
27:26There wasn't so much with our players.
27:28But I think from now to the end of the season, I think the Queen's Park Rangers players will start to feel the tension.
27:35Did they show signs of it today?
27:36They did.
27:37They were arguing amongst themselves once or twice, which I didn't think was a good thing.
27:41But Webby got this goal at a crucial moment.
27:44And he seems to do this.
27:45He has a knack of doing this.
27:46And that secured the points for them.
27:48You losing Joe Royal didn't help, obviously.
27:50No, no.
27:52Joe's a great target man for us.
27:54And it unsettled us a little bit.
27:55But Kenny came on and he did a good job and put himself about a bit.
27:59But we weren't any match for them up front.
28:02They were too strong for us at the back.
28:04Simple as that.
28:05At which point we welcome Don Masson, who had another magnificent game for Rangers yesterday.
28:10Mike Doyle talking there a little bit about the pressure and the fact that it's showing.
28:12Yes, I think it will from now on to the end of the season.
28:17Obviously the pressure is going to be greater for us.
28:19But we've got to live with this.
28:22But he seemed to suggest you weren't living with it very well yesterday, that you were arguing amongst yourselves, Don.
28:27Well, if you're going to win anything, I think players have got to be keyed up.
28:31And the only way to win anything is by gene players up, by gene each other up.
28:36Which we're doing this now at Queen's Park Rangers.
28:39So there's no animosity, there's no bitterness.
28:41None at all, none at all. Once we come off the pitch, everything's forgotten.
28:44What's been new about Rangers this year, do you think? I mean, it's been a wonderful run for you.
28:48It certainly has. I think the way we've played, we've tried to adapt the continental way of playing football.
28:54Dave's a great believer in this, the Holland team.
28:58And we've tried to adapt our way of playing.
29:01And I think we've been quite successful this season.
29:04I was saying what a great game you had yesterday, in spite of a swollen ankle.
29:07How much did that handicap you, though?
29:08Well, I had a good warm-up before the match.
29:10And once I got out there, I forgot about it completely.
29:14Had you given up hope, almost, of getting that vital breakthrough?
29:17Because you'd been near so often, and yet either the woodwork or a good save by Corrigan seemed to be stopping you.
29:22The goalkeeper played exceptionally well.
29:24And unfortunately, in the first half, we hit the woodwork twice, I think.
29:27Johnny Hollins was particularly unlucky, where he hit the post and rebounded to the goalkeeper.
29:31But Davey Webb's always liable to score from dead ball situations.
29:37Which he did. Let's have a look at that, shall we?
29:38That was, what, six minutes from the end, and you took the free kick.
29:42And you spotted him pretty quickly, didn't you?
29:44He makes his run from left-hand side.
29:46He makes his run from outside the box, and I tip it over to the number two, I think it is.
29:50Number 12, Kenny Clements.
29:51Yeah, he comes in behind, and Davey hits him in the top-hand corner.
29:55Good goal.
29:57I'll tell you, maybe we can have a look at that one again very quickly, Don,
30:00because you were saying to me a bit earlier that you thought Joe Corrigan, who'd had a brilliant game,
30:04in fact might have been at fault with him, the ball was always curling away from him a bit.
30:08As you can see now, Davey's out the captain at the moment.
30:12I tip it over the two, he's in space.
30:14Corrigan comes now, and there was no way he was going to get that ball.
30:19If he'd stayed in his line, I don't think he would have got it anyway,
30:22because he went in the top-hand corner.
30:24But I think that was his only mistake in the game.
30:26He played particularly well, I think, the goalkeeper.
30:28The crowd were brilliantly behind you yesterday, but next week, for example,
30:31you go to Newcastle, where they've got maybe as noisy a crowd as there is in the first division.
30:35And that's going to be a very difficult game.
30:37It is. They're a bit of a bogey team to the Queen's Back Rangers,
30:40although we beat them in the league at Loftus Road this season.
30:44Unfortunately, they beat us in the cup up there.
30:46But we drew last year up there, if I can recall, two each.
30:51And I think we should do particularly well this Saturday.
30:55They're all looking forward to it anyway.
30:57Just one quick personal note.
30:59You seem to be ignored by Willie Ormond of Scotland all the time.
31:02And this, I think, rankles a bit with you, doesn't it?
31:04Well, there's nothing I can do about it, really.
31:06I just have to keep plugging away and hope for the best.
31:08And you really are home.
31:13I think it's got to be this summer, hasn't it, really?
31:14Well, if I don't get in the squad this summer, I may as well forget about it, I think.
31:19Don, you've got a lot of other things to look forward to.
31:21And I think one of the things we ought to do, in all honesty now,
31:24is to try and sort out the riot on the pitch 15 minutes from the end,
31:27when Asa Hartford was sent off.
31:29First of all, let's get a view from Manchester City's Mike Doyle.
31:31Yeah, that was unfortunate.
31:33I didn't see the incident.
31:35I thought one of the QPR players went over the top to Asa,
31:38and Asa, he lost his rag, and I think somebody belted him behind the ear.
31:43I just saw a hand swing, and the next thing, he was pulled aside and booked.
31:47I was a bit surprised when the referee sent him off.
31:49But it was a bit of a melee, and I didn't know who was going on,
31:54who to go to and sort out.
31:55There were plenty to choose from, actually, at that point, wasn't there?
31:58There was, yeah. It was a bit of a free-for-all.
31:59You know, it was a sad reflection on the game, in actual fact.
32:02It was, really, because it didn't reflect that sort of game at all.
32:05No, not at all.
32:06Well, after the match, there was also a spiky exchange between the two managers,
32:09a bit unlike them, really.
32:10Tony Book of Manchester City said,
32:12once again, the offender got away with it,
32:14to which Queen's Park Rangers Dave Sexton replied,
32:17if we're going to have a silly row, I must say I thought Asa had it coming.
32:20Maybe he was unlucky to get sent off that time,
32:21because although he'd done the worst punching, many other blows were aimed.
32:25And Reg Drury, in the News of the World, concluded,
32:27now the final verdict rests with the big-match cameras
32:30who witnessed that Shepherds Bush battle.
32:32Well, let's look again at that evidence.
32:34And it wasn't the first time that Asa Hartford had been spoken to
32:37by referee Terry Bozzi.
32:39There were a couple of times in the game.
32:40After 44 minutes, this was after a challenge on John Hollins.
32:43And again, after 62 minutes, when there was a rather late challenge.
32:47You know, the first one, in fact, was on Dave Thomas.
32:48The second one was on John Hollins.
32:50Now, this is the moment, with about 14 minutes to go,
32:53that it all happened.
32:53A fairly innocuous midfield situation.
32:56And as that ball comes loose,
32:57the number six of Manchester City, Alan Oaks, goes for it.
33:00So, too, does Don Masson and Gerry Francis.
33:02And we stop it there,
33:03because that's where Tony Book says there was an over-the-top tackle, Don.
33:06No, that looked... I haven't seen that again.
33:09That looked a fairly innocuous tackle, really, didn't it?
33:13You know, if you can just keep that...
33:15Yeah, we get it moving again in a moment.
33:17And what do your point is that you come away with the ball?
33:19Well, Gerry comes away with the ball there.
33:21He's... He drags me away there, but...
33:24But now Asa comes in.
33:25Yeah, Alan Oaks, he's not too upset with the challenge.
33:29He thinks it's a fair challenge.
33:31But now look what happens now.
33:32As Dave Thomas comes in from behind, from the top of the picture,
33:36and look at Dave Thomas' face, says an awful lot.
33:38He's had one or two battles with Asa Hartford,
33:40and now Asa is clearly his target.
33:42And he pulls Asa Hartford's hair.
33:45But now watch Asa Hartford react as well.
33:47With a swinging blow with his right hand,
33:50he catches Dave Thomas there on the side of the face,
33:52and now the referee knows trouble.
33:54He's got trouble.
33:55He knows also that he needs about 12 pairs of eyes
33:57to keep it all in order.
33:58And I must say you have to sympathise with the referee
34:01in this sort of situation.
34:02But he goes after Hartford.
34:03He grabs him in a rugby tackle there.
34:06And now all sorts of other things begin to happen from off the field,
34:09because by now the men are coming from the trainer's bench.
34:13There are policemen on the field as well.
34:15The linesmen coming in as well.
34:16But I want you to watch now from the bottom of your picture
34:18as Willie Donaghy of Manchester City comes into the picture,
34:20the number three.
34:21He's aiming for the number ten Stan Bowles,
34:23for some reason best known to himself.
34:25And this is what he does to Stan Bowles.
34:27Bang.
34:28On the back of the head,
34:29Bowles falls against the Manchester City physiotherapist.
34:31The Rangers players now thoroughly incensed by it all.
34:35And Tommy Booth, his number five teammate of Manchester City,
34:38comes in to act as a mediator to separate the two parties.
34:42The upshot of it all,
34:44Asa Hartford gets sent off.
34:45You might wonder also whether Dave Thomas
34:47and indeed Willie Donaghy
34:49were not lucky that they didn't follow him.
34:54A bit tougher than you thought, I think, wasn't it?
34:56Well, I didn't realise it was as bad as that, Brian, I must say.
34:58I think it was little Asa caused it all by coming in late.
35:03If he hadn't come in at that instance,
35:05nobody would have bothered about it,
35:06but he came in and he was a bit niggly all the match,
35:09which is a tragedy, really.
35:11There's no need for him to do this.
35:12And it all revolved around Little Ace, I think.
35:15It was a sad moment in a marvellous game,
35:18and congratulations to you, Don,
35:19particularly for the marvellous season you've been having as well.
35:21Thanks, Brian.
35:21Well, now we come to our second match,
35:33Coventry City against Newcastle United.
35:35Just the goals that were covered by ATV,
35:36the commentators Hugh Johns,
35:38Coventry City are the team wearing the plane shirts.
35:40And Craig gets it back for Burns,
35:46and Craig again for Burns.
35:49Oki is steaming back to get at Burns.
35:53There's no way that the referee could allow that particular tackle
35:57to go unpenalised.
35:59Obstruction, indirect free kick.
36:10Number 11, Tommy Craig with it.
36:20And it'll come in here for Hudson-Denot back again.
36:24McGonagall.
36:26Blythe.
36:27And the goal is given.
36:29Blythe has got it.
36:311-0.
36:351-0.
36:36It looked very much as though
36:38two three-men were standing all over Jimmy Blythe
36:42as the ball comes in.
36:44But it stands.
36:45John Blythe scores his first-ever goal
36:48for Newcastle.
36:50And the lead here, 1-0.
36:5242 minutes of the first half gone.
36:54Well, there is a turn-up for the book.
36:59Free kick floating in.
37:02Number 12, Hudson knocks it back again.
37:05And Bird, the man who connects.
37:07And Coventry will argue about it.
37:08He's been chased by Burns.
37:22He's been chased by Burns.
37:24Did well.
37:25Murphy.
37:271-1.
37:27Well.
37:35We've played one minute of injury time
37:37in this first half.
37:39And it's paid off.
37:421-1.
37:43Donald Murphy
37:44scores his fourth goal
37:46for Coventry.
37:49Cross ball.
37:50Cartwright's cross ball.
37:52Neatly done.
37:53Murphy swung the boot.
37:54Mahoney no chance.
37:55Well, that one finished 1-1.
37:59And that brings us
38:00to our Golden Goals competition
38:01of 1976.
38:12And here are the two trophies
38:13to be won.
38:13This one by the player
38:14who scores the Golden Goal.
38:17And this one perhaps by you.
38:18A big match viewer
38:19who wins our Golden Goals competition.
38:21This week we've cut
38:22the short list of goals
38:23to a final six.
38:24What you've got to do
38:25is put them into an order of merit
38:26which is best,
38:27second best,
38:28third best,
38:28fourth best,
38:29down to sixth best.
38:30All six in fact.
38:31And I'll tell you later
38:32how you can register your vote.
38:34So here we go then
38:35with goal A
38:36scored by Brian Basson
38:37of Chelsea.
38:38And this came in their match
38:39against Carlisle United
38:40played at Stamford Bridge.
38:42Graham Wilkins
38:43with Basson outside him.
38:49Played for Charlie Cook.
38:51Back for Graham Wilkins.
38:54Basson hobbling badly
38:56at the moment now.
38:56They've got Maybank
38:57already off the field
38:58injured a moment ago.
39:00Brian Basson hobbling
39:01very badly.
39:02In possession now.
39:03Obviously in some discomfort.
39:04Oh!
39:05Oh!
39:05But what a goal!
39:06Goal B
39:10is scored by Mick Barry
39:12of Carlisle United
39:13and it came in the same match
39:14against Chelsea
39:15at Stamford Bridge.
39:17Now a trade.
39:19Carlisle by now
39:20I would have thought
39:20pretty demoralised.
39:22They offered a fair bit
39:23particularly in the opening
39:24training village
39:24when they came forward
39:25with a lot of aggression
39:26and purpose.
39:27Oh!
39:27And there's a great goal!
39:29Oh my goodness!
39:30What a goal by Barry!
39:32Goal C.
39:33This is by Trevor Brooking
39:34of West Ham United
39:35and it came in their game
39:36against Derby County
39:38played at the baseball ground.
39:43At Holland
39:44to pick up Brookie.
39:46Oh!
39:47What a nice bit of work.
39:48What a good goal!
39:49What a good goal!
39:50That wasn't even
39:51a opportunity of saying
39:53what a good shot.
39:54That was a goal
39:55from the time
39:55it left Brooking Street.
39:57Goal D.
39:58Brian Kidd
39:59of Arsenal
40:00got this one
40:00and it came in the game
40:01against Norwich City
40:02played at Carrow Road.
40:03Machen coming again.
40:08Ross looking for Armstrong
40:10and that's a good one
40:11to Ball.
40:13Kidd coming to the near post.
40:14Kidd going in!
40:15A great goal!
40:17A lovely bit of work!
40:20We move to goal E.
40:21It's by Dennis Stewart
40:22of Manchester City
40:23in the League Cup final
40:24at Wembley
40:25against Newcastle United.
40:26Now McDonough.
40:32Royal.
40:33Oaks.
40:36Donerkey.
40:38Got Barnes outside him.
40:40Donerkey prepared though
40:41to float it in
40:42towards Tommy Booth.
40:44Oh!
40:44And what a goal!
40:46By Stewart!
40:47And finally goal F
40:49by Alan Whittle
40:50scored for Crystal Palace
40:51in their cup tie
40:52against Sunderland
40:53at Roker Park.
40:54Kerr now
40:57will take this kick.
41:00Is this going to be
41:01a problem for Crystal Palace?
41:02It's not
41:03because Hammond is there.
41:05And look at that
41:06for a good throw.
41:07Straight into the path
41:08of Peter Taylor.
41:09Whittle is up
41:09with him as well.
41:11Taylor taking on Bolton.
41:13Moncure getting in
41:14behind Bolton.
41:15And he needs to.
41:17He's going past
41:18Moncure as well.
41:19There's the cross
41:19coming in.
41:20Whittle a goal!
41:21Alan Whittle!
41:22And the Golden Goals
41:23judges will be meeting
41:24to decide the winning order.
41:26The judges this year
41:26being Dave Sexton
41:27of Queen's Park Rangers,

41:33And for the winning viewer
41:34there's the trophy

41:38all the top footballing stars
41:39in our special
41:40Golden Goals party.
41:50Now we come to our third game.
41:52It's a critical one
41:53in the second division
41:53between Bolton Wanderers
41:54who've really been going
41:55through a bad time
41:56in the last month or so
41:57and Chelsea.
41:58The matches at
41:59Burnden Park,
41:59Bolden.
42:00The crowd of 20,817.
42:02The pictures come
42:03from Granada Television.
42:04Commentator Gerald Sinstadt
42:05with Bolton in white.
42:08Nicholson coming in support.
42:10Reeves on a run

42:12Plenty of Bolton men
42:13in the attack.
42:13Reeves!
42:15Put it against the post.
42:17Beautiful run
42:18by Roy Reeves.
42:20And a fine pass
42:21but when he connected
42:22it came back
42:23off the woodwork.
42:25And now Ray Wilkins
42:26for Chelsea.
42:28Swain losing it.
42:31Reeves.
42:32Reeves.
42:35Watmore's flicked.
42:36And here's Morgan.
42:38And again.
42:39Unblocked by Bonetti.
42:40Reeves header goes wide.
42:43And it's a goal kick.
42:47Willie Morgan
42:47saying something
42:48to the referee.
42:50But when the ball
42:51was put in there
42:52and Willie Morgan
42:53found himself free,
42:55his first attempt
42:56was an air shot.
42:57His second
42:58was blocked
42:59by Bonetti.
43:00And then when it
43:01cannoned out to Greves,
43:03his header
43:03drifted wide
43:04of the post.
43:05Reid.
43:06Harris by Lewington

43:33it were a goal
43:34that meant
43:34promotion for them.
43:36Beautiful ball

43:40that set
43:40Britton away
43:41and when
43:42Siddle came
43:43the little fella
43:44kept his head
43:45so well
43:46swept the goalkeeper
43:47and trickled the ball
43:49into the empty net.
43:50Done.
43:58Letting it go
43:59for the throw-in.
43:59Thompson.
44:09Watmore.
44:12Aid quickest to recover.
44:14Reid to Byron.
44:16It's three against three
44:17here.
44:17Four against three.
44:19Byron tries the shot
44:20and Bonetti
44:20got fingertips to it.
44:24Byron saw he had the
44:25shooting chance.
44:26Slip fly
