00:00Welcome! What a great day to be Irish.
00:07There are moments in this job that can be exceptionally challenging,
00:12but they are more than offset by special moments,
00:16moments of extraordinary privilege,
00:19the sort of moments that define this university.
00:22What most significantly brought us to this day
00:25was that we had available to us
00:27the best possible candidate in America
00:30to lead this program and protect this culture
00:34and serve this university.
00:36Ladies and gentlemen, the 30th head coach of the University of Notre Dame,
00:39Marcus Freeman.
00:40I plan on leading this team with an unwavering standard.
00:44We will call it the Golden Standard.
00:50The Golden Standard is something that we live by day in and day out.
00:54TGS on two. One, two. TGS! TGS! TGS!
00:57TGS is the Golden Standard. TGS!
01:01So what is the Golden Standard?
01:04Number one is challenge everything.
01:06Challenge everything, man. Find a better way.
01:08Never just go status quo.
01:12We're not trying to stay complacent or stay in the same place.
01:15We're trying to get 1% better every single day.
01:18Number two is unit strength. Unit strength means love.
01:22You choose to love, so you're choosing to love your teammates.
01:26My teammates choose hard.
01:27We choose to love each other, gain each other's trust.
01:29And number three is the competitive spirit.
01:32It's creating a winner's mindset.
01:35I believe that leaders are born, but winners are created.
01:39And you're created through intentional actions.
01:42We live or die by those. Those are our standards.
01:46We set the standard and we don't falter and we don't fall to nobody about the standard.
01:50And you can either raise yourself to it or fall below it.
01:53This standard will be unwavering.
01:55And this is the standard that will drive this football program to his 12th national championship.
02:14First game under your belt, man.
02:15Yeah.
02:16How do you feel?
02:17Would have liked it to end a little different, but it was good.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Learning opportunities all over.
02:25There's nothing like getting the first one under your belt.
02:29You don't know what you don't know.
02:31You know what I mean?
02:32Like nothing could prepare you for that moment other than playing it.
02:37I met with CJ and told him I was proud of him.
02:39First game, hostile environment.
02:42You know, he played well versus a really good defense.
02:46Like overall, he performed really well.
02:49I was like, did he just throw a note like this now?
02:51That's why you're CJ Carter.
02:53That's why you're starting quarterback.
02:55We are at a better elevation height.
02:58Like where we're at right now versus last year, game one, I promised for a better team.
03:03You know, but the outcome wasn't what we wanted.
03:05And so we got to continue to get better, right?
03:10Because it ain't like we got an easy one coming out.
03:14CJ wants to be perfect like we all do.
03:16But at the end of the day, CJ played really well.
03:18And that's going to be the foundation for what his future is here at Notre Dame.
03:26You handled the environment, the play clock.
03:28You know what I mean?
03:29You were aware.
03:30You're just going to become more and more comfortable.
03:32I could tell you from the first play to the last play, like,
03:38I feel like we could see ourselves be more comfortable as the game went on.
03:41Yeah.
03:42It felt like they couldn't stop us in the second half.
03:44We stopped ourselves in the first half.
03:47That's why this week is going to be important.
03:49Keep going.
03:50Keep leading.
03:51Yes, sir.
03:52Keep going.
03:53Okay.
03:54All right.
03:55Appreciate it.
03:56Yep.
03:57Appreciate it.
04:03CJ, I think, is a very, very competitive person at heart.
04:07Emotional.
04:09You know, he wants to do well as much as anybody that I've ever been around.
04:13It's important to him that he's the best at what he does.
04:17It was quite an environment for CJ to start his career.
04:23In this era of college athletics and football and the way the playoff is structured,
04:28it's good to have that early.
04:30If you're going to lose, and that's a really talented Miami team.
04:34So I think everybody's got to put things in perspective a little bit.
04:41It's a hard start to the year.
04:43All right.
04:44Let's roll.
04:45Okay.
04:46With tradition comes responsibility.
04:47All right.
04:48Well, we get an opportunity.
04:49All right.
04:50To play in this place.
04:51This special place.
04:52All right.
04:53730 Saturday night.
04:55Who it starts with?
04:56It starts with number 10, the quarterback.
04:57All right.
04:58He makes the thing go.
04:59Okay.
05:00He's the leading passer.
05:01He's the leading rusher on the squad.
05:02Marcel Reed raised the ceiling on the quarterback position at Texas A&M.
05:07Now the question is, how good can he be?
05:10Start fast across the board at all positions.
05:13Must have great pursuit and gain tackle.
05:15Get to the down ball.
05:16All right.
05:17That's the mentality.
05:18That's our keys to victory.
05:19I think it's just really good for college football to have brands like that clashing early
05:24and to give us those measuring sticks for both of those teams to have a really good sense of who they are.
05:30Don't be a snooze guy.
05:31Don't be a snooze guy.
05:32All right.
05:33Don't be a snooze guy.
05:34Do it now.
05:35You just got to applaud it because not everyone is willing to do that.
05:38Do it now.
05:39Fix it.
05:40Get it done now.
05:41Right.
05:42Play fast now.
05:43Do it now.
05:44Have that mentality about yourself.
05:46Have a sense of urgency about yourself and everything that you do.
05:50So as soon as you come into this building, have a sense of urgency.
05:53As soon as you get your ass up in the morning, have a sense of urgency about everything that
05:57you do.
05:58If you do that, you're going to be that much better.
06:01I know this week we're going to hit the ground running for sure.
06:06Practice is going to be hard.
06:07Take the field.
06:08Hurry up.
06:09Hurry up.
06:10Hurry up.
06:11Hurry up.
06:21The mindset we play at home is always defend our home.
06:24It's our house.
06:27We don't want someone walking into our house, kicking our front door down and taking our stuff.
06:32Especially when you're with your brothers.
06:33The competition is going to be through the roof.
06:36No one likes losing, obviously.
06:38And our team is going to show that, you know, within this week of practice.
06:42The first time to play in Notre Dame Stadium each season is special.
06:46And we have to make sure we prepare in a way of understanding the opportunity that we have.
06:51Stay up, stay up, stay up, stay up, stay up.
06:53To play in front of our home fans versus the top 25 team.
06:58It's going to be a great experience.
07:01Just remember, like, what Coach Mick talked about, the sense of urgency.
07:04I believe your sense of urgency is a reflection of how important something is to you.
07:09So we've got to make sure that the importance of elevating is more important than anything.
07:13Everybody wants it, man.
07:15I say it all the time, but not everybody's willing to do it.
07:18Our choices will reflect what we value.
07:20Everybody understand that?
07:21If it's important, we'll have a sense of urgency to do those things.
07:24Everybody on the same page?
07:26You got a meal?
07:27TGS on two.
07:28One, two.
07:29TGS.
07:31Is this your first leprechaun tribe?
07:33It is my first leprechaun tribe.
07:38I believe in this group.
07:40Is this your first leprechaun trap?
07:51I believe in this group.
07:55We have four leprechauns.
07:56Gold, blue, and then two green.
08:01Gold is football.
08:03Always football.
08:06There aren't many mascots like us.
08:08We are always striving to be a force for good.
08:11The leprechaun signifies that.
08:14Welcome to the 2025-2026 Notre Dame Leprechaun Tryouts.
08:21Who's ready?
08:24All right.
08:26The in-person tryout is a combination of a pep rally or in-game scenario,
08:32which they're only given two minutes to prepare for.
08:35They're given an envelope with a prompt and say,
08:37hey, now go out there and perform that.
08:38What?
08:39Woo!
08:40Let's go!
08:42B-R-M-D!
08:45A media interview.
08:46Marcus Freeman was an excellent coach these past three years,
08:49and he's going to continue doing great things.
08:50It's a mental game because you prepare for everything that you can,
08:54but then what product are you going to put out?
08:56Are you confident?
08:57Did you freeze up?
08:58I'm McKenna Engelhardt.
09:06I'm a current senior, and I've been a leprechaun for two years so far.
09:11For me, the process started out as a bit of a joke, actually.
09:16They had sent out a notice about, oh, you can be one of the leprechauns.
09:19And I started to realize, oh, there's a lot more to this than just being there at sports games.
09:26And so that kept me coming back.
09:28Leprechaun McKenna, good to meet you guys.
09:30I think something that's really special about McKenna as a leprechaun is, one,
09:35how much she's grown in her role.
09:37We're really happy with the legacy of everyone that comes and plays
09:41and gets to be a part of this community.
09:43The last couple of years, she's covered both men's and women's soccer, hockey, lacrosse,
09:49and she brings a really unique style to the role.
09:52Awesome.
09:53We are not a traditional mascot in that people see our faces, they get to know our names.
10:00And while we are still conveying that kind of playful spirit of Notre Dame,
10:05at the end of the day, we still are a version of ourselves.
10:08This braiding is definitely where the dance experience comes in.
10:13I get butterflies still, I would say, before almost any event I do as leprechaun.
10:21With tryouts, everyone there is there to see you.
10:25That makes me scared.
10:28We give it up for leprechaun McKenna!
10:34Anyone can come watch, and they fill one of the gyms.
10:38Oh, come on, come on, let's hear it.
10:40Yeah, okay, let's win.
10:46That's probably one of the biggest traditions about leprechaun tryouts.
10:49Back in the day, like, they would pack kids in Lexardines, and it would be crazy.
10:53All right, all right, Irish fans!
10:55Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and most importantly, Irish fans, how's it going?
11:02Okay, okay, I think you can do better than that.
11:07I said, how's it going, Irish fans?
11:12Now that is more like it.
11:15When we're judging to choose the students to portray the role, we're looking for a lot of different things.
11:22Are they charismatic?
11:24Do they understand that they're representing something so much bigger than themselves?
11:28There's kind of like a spark that they have.
11:31It's hard to put a word on, but you'll know when you see someone, and you're like, yeah, that person, they got it.
11:37Here we go.
11:38We are Andy Mowder!
11:41You want to call some cheers, get the crowd involved, and just show that you're able to think quick on your feet
11:49and engage people with whatever environment you're thrown into.
11:52All right!
11:58How about one little round of applause?
11:59We're going to go to the camera!
12:04And then that's all done.
12:06We can take pictures quickly with our friends and family.
12:09You did a great job.
12:10Great job.
12:11I'll see you after.
12:12Is it everything you thought it would be?
12:14Maybe more intense.
12:16Okay.
12:16And we go into what is honestly one of my favorite parts.
12:20We change back into our normal clothes, and we get to talk with the panel of judges.
12:25Hi, McKenna.
12:26Hey!
12:27How are you?
12:28Good.
12:28How are you doing?
12:29I'm okay.
12:30Tell us how you hope to continue to impact the role of the program in the university.
12:34I think what's really unique about this role is we each get to try to encapsulate a little bit of this community.
12:41You know, I want to continue leading this university in a way that reflects our core values
12:46and what our university stands for.
12:47What Notre Dame is at its core is a set of people, and the honor of the Leprechaun is getting to serve those people in different ways.
12:53Being a part of it, we all know how special it is and how diverse it is, but I think through this role and showing a little bit of our personality,
13:01we're able to remind others around us of that, and that's something I personally hope to do.
13:07All right.
13:07Thanks, McKenna.
13:08We appreciate you.
13:09All right.
13:10We'll see you soon.
13:10Awesome.
13:11Thank you guys so much.
13:12All right.
13:12Appreciate it.
13:13Thank you guys.
13:15The big difference we're talking about between gold and blue is just who's doing football.
13:19Who can command the larger crowd?
13:22You get a lot of spotlight on you when you're doing football, and you get corrections pretty quick.
13:30Like, you know, people notice when you mess up.
13:34Candidly, what we have to base it on right now is if they had to do it tomorrow, who would do it best?
13:42Okay, so we're feeling pretty good about this.
13:49Hello, hello.
13:50Hello.
13:52How's it going?
13:54No surprises here.
13:56We would love if you would be willing to portray the Notre Dame Leprechaun for the 2025-2026 season.
14:02Only one favor to ask is that you flip your vest inside out to portray the gold Leprechaun.
14:10Absolutely.
14:132025 will be the first year that there's the first woman portraying the role as the gold Leprechaun.
14:18Thanks.
14:19Congratulations.
14:19And so her stepping into that gives more little girls all over the world who are Notre Dame fans, Fighting Irish fans, that they can do hard things and they can be in rooms that are traditionally filled with men.
14:31For me and for everyone that knows what Notre Dame is, they know how diverse it is and that no four students can ever perfectly encapsulate that.
14:42Though it's only right that we're here today at the Rockne Memorial to wake up these echoes before marching on to victory.
14:50At the end of the day, I just want them to have the best experience and to get to share a little bit of the magic of this place of Notre Dame.
15:01So when I say go Irish, you're going to have to shout back at me, beat Aggies, as loud as you can.
15:10Here we go.
15:11Go Irish!
15:12Beat Aggies!
15:13Go Irish!
15:14Beat Aggies!
15:16Go Irish!
15:17Beat Aggies!
15:19Damn, it's good to be back home.
15:21I just want to make sure you guys remember if you were here last year, the last time we were in that stadium, it was electric and we need to make sure tomorrow night you keep that same energy and you guys go crazy.
15:40We were just down at A&M last year and it was pretty loud, but it's nothing compared to what it's going to be like tomorrow night.
15:46So, we love you. We love you. I swear we love you. We're glad to be home.
15:52Hey, I want to thank you guys so much for coming out here and supporting us.
15:56And let's make a crazy environment tomorrow.
15:59You know, last year they said Texas A&M was going to be crazy, but they have no idea what they're walking into coming to Notre Dame.
16:04All right, let's go Irish!
16:05Go Irish!
16:16Welcome, everyone, to the 2025 Notre Dame football home opener.
16:22Tonight, a primetime matchup of two ranked teams as the 16th ranked Texas A&M Aggies make their first trip to South Bend since 2000 to clash with the 8th ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
16:35I think the loss two weeks ago just put kind of an extra sense of urgency in everyone from the players, the coaches, and certainly people on the sideline are acting like it is suddenly as big of a game as you can have at this point in the season.
16:55Coach Mix said all week, he's talking about the first thing he said was, with tradition comes the responsibility of protecting this house, right?
17:02The opportunity to protect this stadium.
17:05He talked about having a sense of urgency, right?
17:09And that's got to be the consistent sense of urgency we have throughout the game, right?
17:14He talked about the opportunity, man.
17:16This is the only opportunity that matters.
17:19Nothing else matters but what we got right in front of us.
17:23Our Lady Queen of Victory!
17:24Ray Bross!
17:25Let's go!
17:25Let's go!
17:29This is the most exciting and electric atmosphere I have ever been a part of at Notre Dame.
17:35Opening drive of the game.
18:04Not even a minute gone so far.
18:06As Reed takes the snap, he'll drop and swing it out.
18:09Pass is caught.
18:11Not going to be enough, and they force a punt.
18:13One of the things we talked about was coming out of locker room and starting fast, and defense forced a punt.
18:19Jordan Faison set to return.
18:21He's standing at the Irish 22.
18:23Oh, the kick is blocked!
18:25Blocks the 20!
18:26Loose fall!
18:27Picked over to 15!
18:28And this one's going to go for six!
18:31What a turn for the Irish!
18:33Touchdown, Notre Dame!
18:36Special teams does it again!
18:40Wow!
18:41I don't know exactly what I was doing at that moment, but I didn't even see the blocked punt.
18:47I just saw everybody going crazy.
18:49You gotta do your job!
18:50He almost took the ball away from the punter.
18:56What an amazing play!
18:59This is the Notre Dame we know.
19:01Huge momentum builder for our team and the start of that game.
19:10Well, they give it to Love.
19:11Double reverse back to Carr.
19:12He's got Reardon!
19:16Wide open down the far sideline!
19:17Caught at the 20!
19:19Inside the 10!
19:20Lunging for the pylon!
19:22And he's just shy!
19:24Razzle-dazzle for the Irish!
19:26I saw that early in the call sheet, and I was a little nervous.
19:32I didn't know how it was going to end up.
19:34What a play call, and what an execution by the offense.
19:37Mike Denbrock in his bag a little bit here early.
19:40You know, we kind of saw it develop.
19:42Saw Eli running pretty free.
19:44And then you say, hey, let's execute and throw the ball to where it needs to be.
19:50If it goes really well like it did, it's a huge burst of energy for the whole team.
19:54And it's a little bit of a risk, but we execute well.
19:59Carr will take the snap, give it to Price.
20:00Running right, cuts inside, has a hole across the five.
20:03Still on his feet!
20:04Threw an arm tackle, and he's in!
20:06Touchdown, Notre Dame!
20:09The Price is right for Notre Dame from seven yards out to take the lead.
20:16I didn't think we started fast enough against Miami.
20:19Agreed.
20:19Out of the shotgun, play fakes, looks left, throws one-on-one.
20:22Leonard Moore is there, and it's intercepted!
20:25Wow!
20:25No fly zone when 15 is in the area code!
20:29You go block punt, and then an interception after that.
20:33So it was a great way to start the game for sure.
20:35Irish on the move, leading by three.
20:37Carr looking on a wheel route.
20:38Love's wide open!
20:39Catch to the 20!
20:40He's inside the 10 for the goal line!
20:43Touchdown!
20:45CJ Carr to Jeremiah Love!
20:4736 yards, and the Irish extend the lead!
20:55They just kind of left him naked out there, and kind of put a ball, even probably a little
21:00too hard out there.
21:02Nobody takes Jeremiah Love, the most dangerous guy on the field for Notre Dame, and a touchdown
21:07for the Irish.
21:08When someone's that wide open, just put it on him, and let him run, especially Jeremiah,
21:13but he made a heck of a catch.
21:16And there is a ton of football left!
21:20Carr.
21:22Just lofts it too high, and intercepted Scooby Williams!
21:27And this time, A&M is right there for the takeaway.
21:30A late jump pass by CJ Carr.
21:34He'll want to have ran that one next time he looks at it.
21:45Reed takes a shotgun snap.
21:47Fires.
21:48Craver brings it in.
21:49Another dart from Marcel Reed.
21:52He's slinging it right now.
21:54Well, I think they have some explosive playmakers on the outside.
21:56We knew going into the game, they were fast, and the quarterback, you know, threw some
22:02great passes, and they made some plays.
22:05Direct snap to Moss, runs between the tackles for the goal line, spins, and he's in!
22:10And the Aggies, for the first time all game, have the lead.
22:17Not a whole lot needs to be said, right?
22:19It's 24 to 28, right?
22:2124 is enough, but we need more.
22:23Defense, we got to step up.
22:24Don't blink!
22:2710, yes, I'll do!
22:291, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1!
22:31Carr has Fields down to the bottom along the near numbers.
22:33Takes the shotgun snap, looking that way, firing for Fields, along the sideline, goes up,
22:37and he brings it in!
22:39Oh, what a catch by Malachi Fields!
22:42On third and 13, brings it in for 27 yards!
22:47Carr stands in a pistol formation with Price behind him.
22:51Gets the snap off, just in time.
22:52Hands it off to Price.
22:53Running left, trying to get to the edge.
22:55Stays on his feet at the 15.
22:56Gets a block at the 10!
22:57Jadarion Price is in!
22:59Touchdown!
23:00Notre Dame!
23:01And the Irish are back on top!
23:05We have the best, you know, one-two punch at running back in the country.
23:08And all eyes are on J-Love, and then Jadarion comes in and scores two touchdowns for us.
23:16It's huge.
23:16A 17-yard scamper!
23:19And Jadarion has done it again!
23:21He is one of the most consistent players we have.
23:25You trust when he has the ball in his hands that he's going to make something positive happen.
23:31He's a selfless individual.
23:32Could be on the field every play, but he makes the most of his opportunities.
23:36And now with 9.06 left, you're looking at a drive that's going to dictate how this game plays out.
23:45The whole second half has just continued to take back the lead.
23:50We'd go up, they'd take it back, we'd take it back, they'd take it back.
23:54Carr's with the shotgun.
23:55They need their own 48 to pick up a first down.
23:58Carr drops, looks left, throws, has fields!
24:01Yes!
24:02Caught it!
24:03Carr dropped it in a bucket!
24:04Incredible accuracy by C.J. Carr.
24:08It was a tight ball game, and our offense had been rolling for the majority of the game.
24:17I wanted to make sure that drive was no different.
24:20He was going to continue to execute.
24:22Third and a long three.
24:23They need the 17-yard line.
24:244.35 to go in the game.
24:26It's tied at 34.
24:28Carr claps for the ball.
24:29Hands it off to Price.
24:31Stutter steps in the hole.
24:32Lunges forward.
24:32He's not going to have it.
24:33It's going to be fourth and about a yard and a half, and now the decision.
24:38The communication between myself and Coach Dembrock was, hey, I was really thinking about
24:41kicking the field goal and just going up three, and then I kind of took a peek at Dembrock.
24:46We need to go for it.
24:48Pistol formation.
24:49Love's behind Carr.
24:50Play clock's at five.
24:51Now he motions out of the backfield.
24:53Love's by himself.
24:54Kind of the message was, you know, this is it.
24:57Two on the play clock.
24:58Takes a direct snap.
24:59Here goes Love on fourth down.
25:01He's got it.
25:02Oh, what a run.
25:03Across the 15.
25:05Jeremiah Love moves the chains with six yards.
25:09Fitting that the best player on offense tonight gets his number called when they need it most.
25:15Gutsy stuff for Marcus Freeman.
25:17Then the thought process was like, okay, let's try to use some of this time.
25:23He'll give it to Love.
25:24Puts his head down.
25:25Breaks one tackle.
25:25Across the five.
25:26He's in.
25:28Touchdown.
25:29Jeremiah Love.
25:30And the Irish lead.
25:32And, you know, the next play, Jay Love scores a touchdown.
25:40With 2.53 to go in regulation, Notre Dame's on top by a touchdown.
25:4640 to 34.
25:49And Love is in the air in South Bend.
25:51Critical extra point from Burnett to make it a seven-point game.
26:07I was on the sideline.
26:08We were getting back to the iPads.
26:10Kind of heard the crowd go.
26:14Oh, no.
26:15They botched the snap.
26:16Tyler Buckner rolling left.
26:18Has to throw.
26:19Incomplete.
26:20Oh, no.
26:20Oh, no.
26:22They missed the extra point with a botched snap.
26:27And now A&M with a touchdown could possibly win the game.
26:32Anytime something negative happens, you're disappointed.
26:35But you got to get refocused for the defense going on the field.
26:38And so, you know, you can't dwell on the negatives.
26:42Oh, the special teams have been so good tonight.
26:45And now 40 to 34.
26:47And the pressure's really on the defense.
26:50You got to move forward and win the next play.
26:53They made some great plays because they had some really good players and executed well.
27:12Fourth goal.
27:13Notre Dame leads 40 to 34.
27:17The season very much on the line right now.
27:24Reid motions.
27:25Concepcion to the left.
27:27Takes the shotgun snap.
27:28Fourth and goal.
27:29Here's the ballgame.
27:30Pumps.
27:30Throws for the end zone.
27:32Oh, what a catch.
27:37It's brought in by Nate Borkercher.
27:41A desperation play for the Aggies.
27:44Pays off.
27:45We had the guy covered.
27:47It was one-on-one.
27:48And the tight end made a heck of a play.
27:50The quarterback threw a great ball.
27:54You know, I wouldn't change anything we did.
27:57And that is the ballgame.
27:59Texas A&M comes to South Bend and shocks the Irish.
28:05And that is a heartbreaker for Notre Dame.
28:11It stinks.
28:13Nobody wants to start the year off 0-2, especially with the talent we have on offense, defense,
28:19special teams.
28:21But we are.
28:22And, you know, that's the reality of it.
28:25How do you address your team?
28:26What's important in that moment when everybody's disappointed?
28:31We got to get back to work.
28:32You have a leader that's unshakable and unbreakable.
28:36I'm going to lead in the best way I know how.
28:39And that's fast and furious.
28:53These two losses are just devastating.
28:57I'm glad they're still in the top 25.
29:00It's still a very good football team.
29:02They just happen to have gotten beat by two better football teams.
29:05After a loss, you try to figure out why.
29:13What are the reasons?
29:17I think we all go through different emotional stages, from frustration to disbelief to, okay,
29:25how do we use this to acceptance to make us better?
29:27You don't want, you shouldn't want to be a head coach if you don't want to lead during tough times.
29:31I don't want to be in this situation, but I get more excited to lead right now than ever before.
29:37How you lead during tough times affects how people see you.
29:41What do you guys think?
29:42I think that's spot on.
29:49We're on two.
29:50It's not going to change.
29:52We're not going to un-lose those games.
29:55We need to go.
29:56That's right.
29:57That's right.
29:58I trust it.
29:58I know we will.
30:00I know we have the guys, too.
30:02There's nobody else.
30:03I'd rather do it with them.
30:05I know you guys feel the same way.
30:07How do you think is half of the battle?
30:10Oh, he did this, that, or not.
30:11That's not how we play.
30:13You know what I mean?
30:13So we just got to, especially defensively, which is not executing at the same rate we did last year.
30:19You know, you have to be able to collect your thoughts by the time you meet with your team.
30:26Probably 48 hours after the game.
30:28You know, for me, it was just trying to put all the pieces together and make them understand that outcomes don't always tell the true story.
30:36You try not to be outcome-driven, but we're evaluated off of outcomes.
30:41Our focus has to be to reach our full potential, and we've got to attack ways to do that.
30:46Good.
30:47Here we go.
30:52Right, right.
30:54All right, let's roll.
30:55You all have to self-reflect and self-eval, okay?
31:01Every person in this room has got to say, okay, we didn't get it done, okay, why?
31:06What didn't I do?
31:08What didn't I do, and how do we make it better?
31:10And until we have that mentality, guess what?
31:13We ain't going to do this.
31:15Until everybody collectively says, okay, where did I fail?
31:20And not point your finger?
31:21Like, I could come in here and sit here and go, hey, guys, we're five points away from being 2-0.
31:28What's that going to do?
31:30Make me feel better?
31:31Make us feel better?
31:33The reality is we're 0-2.
31:36Don't hide from it.
31:38We're 0-2.
31:40That's where we're at.
31:42What are we going to do to get out of it?
31:43I just told the captains, it's crazy how two people can see the exact same thing and have completely different opinions about what they saw.
31:52People outside of here, Notre Dame football is 0-2.
31:56Offense is great and the defense sucks.
31:58It's one person's fault.
32:00Buckner, it's your fault because you dropped Drake.
32:01It's your fault.
32:02It's Coach Aster's fault.
32:03It's Coach Freeman's fault.
32:04It's every person in this room's fault.
32:05It's every person in this room's fault.
32:11Everybody looks at last year.
32:12Man, you guys had a great season.
32:14You guys been in that championship game.
32:15There was some pain.
32:17If you were in this room after New Illinois, that hurt.
32:20I'm telling you, we're going to reach this full potential.
32:22But you got to understand, there's going to be some pain.
32:24We got to go through it.
32:26You got a head coach.
32:26I swear to God, we'll go down swinging every day.
32:30There's only one way to go, and that's forward.
32:32And we got to do it together because that's what family does.
32:36And it starts with this opportunity on Saturday.
32:38Go get our first taste, okay?
32:39But it takes struggling and pain today and evaluating and owning it
32:44and making sure we do whatever it takes to get better.
32:47Everybody clear?
32:48Let's go to work.
32:48TGS on two.
32:49One, two.
32:50Yes.
32:52On two, we get to write our own chapter.
32:55Everything right there in front of us.
32:56That's the mindset we got to have, right?
32:59Yeah, we played well, but we ain't played well enough.
33:05None of us want to be in this situation.
33:14Losing sucks.
33:16Can't sleep, can't eat, don't want to talk to nobody.
33:19You know what, man?
33:20Roll our sleeve up, man.
33:21Let's go back to work.
33:22The only thing we know how to do is get better.
33:24Correct all the little details that we overlook.
33:27That long clock goes off, get up, ten toes down, go to work.
33:38We played good, but we still can elevate.
33:45Hey.
33:47You're a great player, but you're a better person.
33:50Lead this team.
33:51That's willing to win.
33:52I grew up in Denison, Texas, which is about an hour north of Dallas, Texas.
34:16Small town where everyone really knows each other.
34:17Growing up, it was either you're a Texas Longhorns fan or Oklahoma Sooners fan.
34:27And I wasn't really much either.
34:30I wanted to do something different.
34:31I wanted to do something that was going to really change my life for the better
34:34and put Denison, Texas on the map and my family on the map.
34:38And that was go to a random Catholic university in South Bend, Indiana.
34:44Hands it off to Price.
34:45J.D. is a playmaker.
34:48Running left, looking for the edge.
34:51J.D. can pretty much do it all.
34:52He can run routes, he can block, run the ball.
34:55Turns on the Jets.
34:56J.D. made some incredible plays last season.
34:58I see it every single day.
35:00You know, all the eyes get pointed to J. Love, but then you put Jadariong in and it's almost like,
35:05okay, J. Love's out of the game.
35:06And then Jadariong does the same thing J. Love does.
35:08It makes 11 players on the other team look slow, look like they can't tackle.
35:13Runs through a tackle!
35:14In my eyes, he's the best running back in the country.
35:18Jadariong Price!
35:19I've always had people looking up to me my whole life.
35:27Growing up, I was the older brother of two younger sisters, so I've always had to be the mature one.
35:33Not always leading by my voice, but just leading by example.
35:36There wasn't any male figures around.
35:42Growing up with a bunch of women in the house, definitely, I would think, made him stronger.
35:48My mom was always there and my sisters were always there, so I knew how to respect people and do the right things.
35:53Definitely, seeing his mom being a single parent, I think that molded him.
36:00Usually, you would think it would be the opposite, not having a father around.
36:03My mom played a huge role in my everyday life.
36:06She sacrificed a lot of things.
36:08Having to work a job, but also take care of three young kids.
36:10We were all in a lot of extracurricular activities, like football, basketball, track, baseball.
36:15I mean, I played it all.
36:17Her having to navigate this crazy world of sports and keeping us off the streets and things like that,
36:25I bet it was pretty challenging for her, but it was really important for me to see her do those things.
36:31At the time, I was 30 years old.
36:39At a certain age, you're supposed to do mammograms and breast examination.
36:45And once I went and made an appointment to see the doctor, they did an exam,
36:50and they all came in and closed the door, and I'm looking, and that's when I knew, and I said,
36:56you've got to be kidding me.
36:57When you feel something, it's a lump.
37:04What do you tell a 12-year-old, a 9-year-old, and a 6-year-old?
37:09I was the mature one in the household, but I still didn't really understand how serious cancer was.
37:15But then I started to look and think, now I have to step up even more for my sisters and be there for them.
37:21He was humble, still real quiet.
37:24He just observed. That's what I needed at the time.
37:27Just them being kids and just being around helped me.
37:31Just helped me knowing that I had to be around for them.
37:34Biggest thing for me and my sisters was we wanted our mom to come home from the hospital to a clean home,
37:39yard cut, kitchen clean, things like that.
37:41So just to make my mom happy any way we could, because we knew she was going through tough times.
37:47There was the stages where her hair started to fall out, and that's when I started to realize, oh, this is like a serious thing.
37:53Like, she's losing her hair, and sometimes I'll walk in on her crying.
37:57And that really hit me deep.
37:59I didn't know how to take it.
38:00I didn't know what, I didn't comprehend, I guess, well, why me, why me?
38:07She didn't know how much longer she had to live at that time.
38:11When my mom was going through those tough times, for me, it was always sports where I could really push my emotions on, too.
38:20You know, football, if you're angry, you can really use the football field and your abilities to just go out there and express those emotions out there.
38:36In November 2017, I was around 14 years old.
38:39When it was announced that she was cancer-free, I remember it was a big thing.
38:43We all met up at this church in Denison, Texas, and the whole family was there.
38:48Everyone had on pink shirts and things like that, and that's when I really knew, like, this is very important.
38:57Thankful.
39:00Blessed.
39:01It was a miracle.
39:04Don't really think everybody was shocked, because they already knew I was a fighter.
39:10It was so much relief, but it also had changed me forever.
39:14You know, just because she didn't have cancer anymore, she wasn't going through chemo anymore, it didn't change the fact that I was still the older brother in the household, and I still had to look out for my sisters.
39:25Because it was already ingrained in my brain to just, you know, work hard every day, and it motivated me still on the field, because you never know what tomorrow brings.
39:32I'm super blessed to still have my mom.
39:39Your mom is your rock.
39:41I'm blessed, because not a lot of other people still have, you know, their mom or both parents.
39:47To this day, I make sure my mom comes to every game whenever she can.
39:52Amazing.
39:58The loudness, how people come together, and the support.
40:04It hadn't hit us yet, reality.
40:08It's not quite hit us yet, because we've been just going through the struggle for so long.
40:13So we're just, just taking it all in.
40:17It keeps me going.
40:19Woo!
40:19Let's go get him!
40:24I think about the 12-year-old me, and everything I've gone through my whole life, and now ending up at University of Notre Dame, playing football at the biggest stage.
40:32Game day, when we hear the song, and it really, it really hits me, like, this is how far I've come, and every moment up until now has really meant something.
40:41Let's go, boys!
40:43Woo!
40:46Go get him!
40:47Go get him!
40:49Go get him!
40:50Yeah!
40:50All right!
40:51Woo!
40:53The thing that comes to mind is, everything happens for a reason.
40:56God always has a plan.
40:58Go get him, coach!
40:59My mom always told me that.
41:01Let's go, Irish!
41:04Let's go, Irish!
41:07Let's go, Irish!
41:10Let's go, Irish!
41:11Happy college football Saturday, America, and welcome to Notre Dame football.
41:22A classic college football rivalry is renewed between the Purdue Boilermakers and the 24th-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
41:34Let's be clear.
41:36Let's be clear.
41:36If you want to stay in the college football playoffs, you've got to start beating the Brakes off the teams, and it has to start today.
41:42We're back.
41:46Here we are, man.
41:48This is the only remedy there is.
41:54It's transactional.
41:55You play harder, you out-execute them, and we get what we want.
42:03That's all you've got to win.
42:04This play.
42:10Everybody clear?
42:11I'm not worried about the game.
42:13I'm not worried about the outcome.
42:14Notre Dame gets the ball now for the first time offensively.
42:17We've got to win this play right now.
42:19This is the play we've got to win.
42:21C.J. Carr, starting his third game of his career.
42:26Takes the snap and play fakes.
42:27Carr, looking, has a clean pocket.
42:29Taking a shot.
42:30Has fields.
42:31Deep down there.
42:32He catches it at 25.
42:33Across the 20.
42:34He's in.
42:35Touchdown.
42:36Notre Dame.
42:37On the first offensive play, they strike.
42:42Knew we wanted to take a shot the first play.
42:45Great protection.
42:47Great ball.
42:47And then a great catch.
42:49Great execution.
42:51It's kind of crazy.
42:54You know, first play, first drive.
42:58Tud.
42:59And just like that, Notre Dame is on the board.
43:04Hey, where'd he go?
43:05Where'd he go?
43:05Where'd he go?
43:05Where'd he go?
43:06Where'd he go?
43:07Hold on, hold on, hold on.
43:08Where'd he go?
43:08Where'd he go?
43:08Where'd he go?
43:09Where'd he go?
43:10You already know what I'm going to say.
43:11Coach, don't do a back clip again.
43:13Who did?
43:14Yeah, who have you scored?
43:15He did a back clip in the end zone.
43:17No, he didn't.
43:19Hey.
43:20Hey.
43:21They just warned me.
43:22Hey, they said another back clip.
43:24That's 15.
43:25Nobody's worth 15.
43:26All right?
43:30You know, set the tone for the game.
43:33Notre Dame is guaranteeing or dominate.
43:36To give it to Love.
43:37And Love's got some room to go and flash that speed.
43:42Had a way to run for him.
43:43Had a way to run.
43:44Price gets his first carry.
43:45Running right.
43:45Has a full head of steam across the 10.
43:47Looking for the pylon.
43:48Dives for the goal line.
43:50Touchdown.
43:51Yeah!
43:53Janarian Price from 21 yards out on his first carry of the game.
43:58Hits the end zone.
44:00That's the way to go, O.
44:01That's the way to go.
44:02Those two guys are pretty special.
44:04They're unselfish.
44:06You know, each of those guys can be on the field at every play.
44:09You can give them the ball every play.
44:11But they know there can usually only be one running back on the field at a time.
44:14You need us a turnover.
44:19Brown out of the shotgun.
44:20Looks right.
44:20Throws on a slant.
44:22Oh, it's picked off.
44:23Picked off in the secondary.
44:25Notre Dame has the football.
44:28That's what we needed.
44:28That was all because of the work of your linebackers.
44:34And that ball popped up into the open arms of Christian Gray.
44:38That's what we needed.
44:40That's what we needed.
44:42That's what we needed.
44:44Let's go.
44:46Notre Dame leads 21-10.
44:48Carr will hand it off to Jadarian Price.
44:49He finds a hole and tries to get out to the near sideline.
44:52Good.
44:52A hard running by Jadarian Price.
44:54Third and one.
44:55Price gets the carry.
44:56Stutter steps gets inside to the 10.
44:58He's got the first down.
45:00This is just a wonderful design game plan.
45:03Let's run the ball to the edges in between the tackles.
45:07Carr will hand it off to Price.
45:09Running to the right.
45:09Bounces outside.
45:10He's inside the five.
45:11Looking for the end zone again.
45:12And Jadarian Price is in the house for the second time.
45:17Touchdown, Notre Dame.
45:18Hell yeah.
45:19Way to finish it.
45:22All right.
45:22Just been informed from the officials here that there is a weather delay.
45:27Dangerous lightning too close.
45:29So, they are sending players to the locker room.
45:34They're going to suspend their game.
45:38Suspend the game.
45:39Let's go.
45:40Locker room.
45:40Everybody locker room.
45:41I think you have to, one, understand how long it's going to be.
45:51You have to be able to take off your equipment, relax, and then utilize the time efficiently.
46:01And then, the hardest part is the challenge is to get mentally ready to go again.
46:07Here's all I got to say, okay?
46:08Offense, right?
46:09We have to avoid the catastrophic error.
46:12We know that, right?
46:13They had one chance.
46:14We had one error.
46:15Okay?
46:15They forced us to fumble.
46:16You got to take care of the ball.
46:17But continue.
46:18All you're doing is playing harder than them, and you're out executing them.
46:21So, continue to do that.
46:22Okay?
46:22Defensively, you have to do your job.
46:25That's all it is, man.
46:27That's all it is, man.
46:28Do your job.
46:31Come out the locker room, and let's go hunt.
46:32Everybody good?
46:33Let's go.
46:33Here we go.
46:35DGS on two.
46:36One, two.
46:37DGS.
46:37Let's go.
46:39Jadarion Price is going to get his hands on it here from one yard deep.
46:42Bringing it back right to left, see if he can find a crease.
46:44Gets through one tackle.
46:45He's at the 25.
46:46Across the 30.
46:47Breaks a tackle.
46:48He's across midfield.
46:49He's going to go all the way.
46:53Touchdown!
46:54Jadarion Price.
46:55It's kickoff return.
46:57TD.
46:58How about Jadarion Price?
46:59He's got 199 all-purpose yards with three touchdowns in the first half.
47:07And that's really the standard.
47:09Execute no matter the circumstances.
47:11Just get your job done.
47:14Love's the back.
47:15He'll give it to him.
47:15Bounces out to the right.
47:16Puts his foot in the turf with a 40.
47:17Trying to get all the way to the outside.
47:18To the sideline.
47:19Love turns the corner of the 30.
47:20And streaking for the end zone.
47:23Touchdown!
47:24Notre Dame with a run by Love.
47:27There's no better feeling than scoring a touchdown at your home.
47:31Notre Dame running the ball towards victory.
47:35Hey!
47:36Keep helping.
47:37Hey!
47:37That's what your team needs you to do, man.
47:39We need you.
47:41We need you.
47:41Good job, man.
47:42We were just dominating.
47:43Carr, from the shotgun, has time.
47:46Looking down the near sideline.
47:47He's got Faison at the 20.
47:49Catches at the 15.
47:50Inside the 10 for the end zone.
47:52Faison's in!
47:53Just a perfect ball from CJ Carr.
47:57First and goal.
47:58Price is the back.
48:00Gets the handoff.
48:01Running right.
48:02Cuts inside for the goal line.
48:03He's in again.
48:05Another touchdown for Jadarion Price.
48:08His third on the ground.
48:10And his fourth in the game.
48:14Good job, man.
48:16I think I've always said this, is that the unselfishness, that's what makes him special.
48:20He understands the lay gratification.
48:22He works.
48:22He prepares.
48:23And he takes advantage of the opportunities that are given to him.
48:27Incredible day for Jadarion Price.
48:29The kind of day that a running back can only dream.
48:32Notre Dame has their first win of the season.
48:44They beat the Purdue Boilermakers 56-30.
48:49And the offense makes a big statement in South Bend.
48:54But the star of the show is Jadarion Price and his four touchdowns.
48:59Who would have thought that I'd be here, small town, Denison, Texas.
49:04And now I'm playing for Notre Dame.
49:06I think about it every day like this is crazy.
49:09Sometimes I have to sit back and come back to reality like this is real.
49:16I knew I wanted to be a college football player since the beginning.
49:19It was always a dream of mine.
49:21And the fact that I'm actually here at the biggest stage is truly a blessing.
49:25This is where you work hard.
49:26This feeling that we all have right now.
49:29There is no drug.
49:31There is no drink.
49:31There is nothing that could give you this type of feeling.
49:35The feeling of victory.
49:36Especially when you put everything into this.
49:39Right?
49:40And everybody now, instead of doing this, now it's time to do this.
49:44Right?
49:45When we have success, it's time to point your finger at everybody else, man.
49:48Because it's the greatest team sport there is.
49:50Appreciate the way you guys stayed together.
49:53Right?
49:53This is the start.
49:55Probably 280 days since we've been able to do this.
