00:00Choosing a movie to watch has never been harder than in this day and age.
00:08With thousands of flicks hitting the screens all across the world, as well as the hit-and-miss
00:12directed DVD quagmire, you've got more options than your mum on Tinder.
00:172017 saw its fair share of massive hits with Get Out, Dunkirk, Wonder Woman and Not Leatherface,
00:23Leatherface was such a tripe, but as you can expect that means that there's been so many
00:27that have bypassed the masses.
00:29So let good old Uncle Jules take you for a walk down the far off time of last year and
00:35dust off some gems that you might not have noticed.
00:37With this in mind, I'm Jules at WhatCulture.com and these are 10 awesome movies from 2017 that
00:42you probably missed.
00:4310.
00:44Brawl in Cell Block 99 If I was to tell you that Vince Vaughn was in
00:48a B-movie thriller flick, you'd be more turned off than a Welshman being offered a dusty hand
00:52job by Margaret Thatcher's ghost.
00:54Yet this film, made by the minds behind Bone Tomahawk, is actually really decent.
00:59It's a film that celebrates trashy film tropes and actually sees Vince give one of his better
01:03performances.
01:04It carries a grindhouse vibe that is sure to turn some people off, but for those of us
01:09who love the campiness of Planet Terror, then this tale of revenge is sure to entertain.
01:14The plot is super simple, with Big V having to murder everyone in Cell Block 99, but it's
01:19thin on action, suspense, and in places, utter dumb fun.
01:24Plus, the soundtrack is peng-a-lang.
01:279.
01:28Colossal Okay, so the plot alone should sell you on
01:31this one.
01:32Anne Hathaway is an alcoholic who comes to realise slowly that she is somehow connected
01:36to a giant monster who is crushing South Korea.
01:40Apocalypse Anonymous should have been what it was called, but they went with Colossal,
01:43and it is an absolute blast.
01:46Now in its defence, the reason why such an interesting sounding film dodged the majority
01:49of the public is because it didn't get a worldwide release.
01:52Yet for those that did see this drama, satire, comedy, sci-fi film, it's a rare treat of being
01:58something very new in a world of remakes and rehashes.
02:02It's not perfect, but it breaks ground in such interesting ways that you can forgive a
02:06lot of its small missteps.
02:078.
02:08Good Time Robert Patterson has had a strange career
02:12so far.
02:13He's forever been shown as this weird, softy, lovey-dovey lad with less teeth than a baby,
02:18even when he's playing a vampire, which has ironically got a lot of teeth.
02:21Good Times changes this somewhat by making Patterson repulsive, by casting him as a sleazy
02:27criminal called Nikos, who goes on the run with his mentally disabled brother after
02:31a botched robbery.
02:33What makes Good Times so interesting outside of its killer 80s score is the way it subverts
02:37your expectations at every turn.
02:39Just when you think you've got a grip on where the plot is going, the film changes direction,
02:43resulting in an experience that is both frustrating and exhilarating.
02:48When it's over, you're bound to be left with a feeling of, what the f*** did I just
02:51watch, but in the best possible way.
02:54It's got the makings of a cult classic and will change the way you think about Robbie P.
02:58potentially forever.
02:597.
03:00Wind River
03:01Taylor Sheridan is best known for writing the brilliant film Sicario, and continues to work
03:05wonders with this tight mystery movie.
03:07A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent, sounds like a fun job, and an FBI agent have to team
03:12up in an attempt to discover why a beautiful young woman is found dead in the snow, raped,
03:17with no shoes on.
03:18The atmosphere here is key to the film's power.
03:20It has this strange allure of a movie like Christopher Nolan's Insomnia, mixing in elements
03:25of the Coen Brothers noir films and the likes of classic westerns.
03:29The result is a film that is by turns disturbing, violent and thrilling, especially as the screenplay
03:34makes sudden, unexpected turns, all of which help dig its hooks in deep.
03:396.
03:40Song to Song
03:41It's a bit odd that a movie starring Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman
03:45and Rooney Mara should only bring in one million dollars at the box office, but that's exactly
03:49what happened to Terrence Malick's latest Song to Song.
03:53Now Malick's box office appeal has been on a steady decline over the years, mainly due to
03:57his shooting style, which is much more experimental with each and every flick.
04:01For that reason, you will either love or hate Song to Song, but trust me, it is worth a gamble.
04:06The very loose plot of Song to Song hones in on two love triangles and takes place in and
04:11around the Texas music scene.
04:13Ryan Gosling is especially good here, his easy-going manner perfect for the Malick style, and as one
04:18might expect, it's beautiful and bizarre in equal measures, with characters standing around,
04:23gazing at various landscapes, wondering what it all means.
04:265.
04:27The Red Turtle
04:28There's no dialogue in this beautifully animated, atmospheric piece of work, which follows
04:33the course of a man's life after he is stranded on a beautiful island in the middle of nowhere
04:37with only the titular Red Turtle for company.
04:40The movie opens with said man coming to terms with his new existence, learning the ropes of
04:44his environment alone within a tropical island paradise.
04:48After a while though, the film transforms into something more.
04:51A sad and heartbreaking meditation on loneliness, nature, and perhaps most surprisingly, family.
04:584.
04:59The Girl With All The Gifts
05:00Based on M.R.
05:01Carey's brilliant novel of the same name, the film adaptation of The Girl With All The Gifts
05:05hit cinemas last year and then just sort of disappeared into the ether never to be heard
05:10from again, which is a shame as there's some really great work on display here.
05:14The story takes place sometime in the near future, when much of the human populace has been decimated
05:18by an unknown pathogen, and the survivors live together in a strange army base of sorts
05:23where children are kept and treated like experiments.
05:26To explain more would spoil the film's many surprises, but let's just say nothing going
05:30on here is quite what it seems.
05:32It was made on the low budget of just 5 mil, and while it's got a lot of similarities
05:39to films like 28 Days Later and Day of the Triffids, it's a film which executes its
05:43story so well that it manages to feel fresh.
05:463.
05:47My Life As A Courgette
05:49Though this beautiful animated feature was actually made in 2016, it didn't receive
05:53a release in the UK or United States until the middle months of 2017, thus qualifying
05:58it for this inclusion on this list.
06:00The film centres on the titular Courgette, who winds up in a foster home with lots of
06:04other abandoned children, and what follows is the story of how Courgette comes to term
06:08with his new life and absence of his parents.
06:10It's a short film, just running over 60 minutes, but it packs in so much emotion that it's
06:15a veritable powerhouse.
06:17The subject matter is so bleak that, in other films, it would feel too dense, but here it
06:21feels effortless while also respectful.
06:24It's a triumph in every sense of the word.
06:262.
06:27Raw
06:28One made in 2016, but not given an overseas theatrical release until 2017, Raw is without
06:33question one of the best and most original horror movies in decades.
06:38Just ask Observer Film Critic Mark Kermode, who knows horror movies better than most, who
06:42went on to name it the best film of 2017.
06:45Quite the accolade, you'll agree, but not as much as me giving a film my Jules Gill moist
06:50digit of the decade award, but you know, still pretty close.
06:52Raw centres on a teenager who develops a sudden craving for human flesh.
06:56And it's comical, shocking, violent and erotic.
07:00It's a treat for those who love the body horror films of David Cronenberg, yet what sets Raw
07:04apart from being pure schlock is the beauty of its cinematography, the performances and
07:09the musical score.
07:10It didn't make a dink in the sales charts, but as it stands, this film is pure gold.
07:16And number one, Lady Macbeth.
07:18No, not an adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play, though the reasons for the title become
07:22wholly apparent the moment you sit down to watch this strange, macabre drama set in a
07:27stately home in 19th century rural England.
07:30Directed by William Oldroyd, it is without doubt one of the year's best movies.
07:34Lady Macbeth centres on Catherine, a beautiful young woman whose life has already been mapped
07:38out for her.
07:39She'll marry a man she doesn't love, and live out her days as a lady of a large
07:43estate.
07:45One day, however, she stumbles across the Heathcliff-like Sebastian working in the stables,
07:50and his rough, aggressive manner is the very opposite of Catherine's husband, and so sparks
07:55a sexual fire within her.
07:56What follows thereafter is best kept in the dark, though this film packs a mighty punch
08:02for its 89 minute length, forcing you to alternatively root for and rally against Catherine as she
08:07plots her revenge.
08:08Did I say revenge?
08:10Yes, I did.
08:11It's the kind of film you watch with your hands covering your eyes, perpetually sensing
08:15that something terrible is just minutes away, and for that reason, I f***ing loved it, and
08:21so should you.
08:22Gosh, can you believe that that person said that about that particular video on that entry?
08:26I sure can't.
08:27Huh, but you should like, share and subscribe below anyway, and also the people who made this
08:31video, they're right here.
08:32Go follow them, and give them some love.
08:34Also, there's more content, probably above my head.
08:36Check it out.
08:37Hold on.
08:3850-50.
