00:00I think especially now that everyone has so much to distract them all the time, you just
00:05can't afford ever as a performer and artist to waste anyone's time.
00:09Like for five seconds on stage, or for one bar on your record, like everything you do
00:14has to be engaging in some way.
00:18Rapper, writer and performer George Watsky is currently on his biggest headlining tour
00:22yet, supporting his new album, Complaint.
00:26When the eloquent emcee had a minute in LA, he stopped by our studio to talk about the
00:29album and the opportunity he has to bring poetry into the lives of his fans, watch.
00:34For years I had a bigger following for my poetry than for my music, and I was doing this music
00:39on the side trying to convince everybody that I had a viable career in it, and he like pat
00:43me on the head and be like, yeah sure you do, you know, keep up with that thing, like go
00:45for it, and then eventually it flipped the other way around, and I had more followers
00:49for my music, and my poetry became sort of the redheaded stepsister, and then I felt like
00:55I had this opportunity slash obligation to like introduce those people to spoken word
01:00poetry, because I think it's changing, but there's still a huge amount of people who don't
01:05know that they might like poetry, if they hear the right poetry for them.
01:10So I try to put a poem on the album, sort of sneak attack the rap fans with a little
01:15spoken word, and you know, maybe turn them into poetry people.
01:18Catch Watski on tour through April 2nd, more dates and details at georgewatski.com.
01:22See you next time.
