00:00This is a presentation of Mavs TV.
00:30Put him in the starting lineup.
00:31The undrafted rookie has burst onto the scene,
00:34complimenting another Mavs rookie quite well.
00:37Now Nimhard throws it up ahead.
00:39Koop!
00:39The alley-oop!
00:41He just makes everybody better out there.
00:43He's been ultra-confident, and that's what you have to do.
00:45If Nimhard keeps this pace,
00:48there might be a new lead, Billy.
00:55Very cute in the running for Tease of the Year
00:58as we get you ready for tonight's action
01:00between the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets.
01:02Both teams failed to reach the knockout stage of the NBA Cup,
01:05so this game was added to their regular season schedules.
01:08And we are excited to be back.
01:09First game since Saturday.
01:10Devin Harris, Jeff Skinway join me.
01:12I'm Mark Folliwell.
01:13Great to have you tuned in.
01:14All right, we just saw the tease about the man.
01:16Let's talk about him, Ryan Nimhard,
01:18and the impact he's had on this team, Devin,
01:20since going into the starting lineup six games ago.
01:22Yeah, the offense has looked a little bit different.
01:24You know, he plays with a calmness and a confidence.
01:26He doesn't play like a rookie.
01:28Teams to get guys involved, guys in the right spot.
01:31The looks are quality and consistent.
01:34When it's time for him to score, his bag is deep.
01:37And obviously with the pace the guys want to play at,
01:40they want to play for him.
01:42And I'm excited to see how he consistently gets better
01:44each and every game as a young player.
01:46And going against the Brooklyn Nets team tonight,
01:49he's got to be good, not great,
01:50but I expect him to be just that.
01:5215 points, seven assists a game as a starter.
01:55And then this big impact on what was obviously
01:59very problematic for Dallas early in the season, turnovers.
02:02They've been the best team in the league
02:04when it comes to fewest turnovers per game
02:06over the last six contests.
02:07And they've gone from 30th in the first 19 games
02:09to second over the last six
02:11when you look at assists to turnover ratio.
02:13This is, as I said a moment ago,
02:14the first game since Dallas beat Houston on Saturday.
02:17And no coincidence that the Mavericks handled the Rockets' skin
02:20on a night when P.J. Washington returned from a four-game absence.
02:23Boy, it was nice to have him back, you know,
02:25before the game when we asked Coach Kidd
02:26about what P.J. does for this team.
02:28He said, Swiss Army Knife.
02:30But then the next thing he said was defense.
02:32And you're going to see a lot of defense in these clips.
02:35You know, against Houston, it was huge
02:36not only getting steals and blocked, you saw five steals,
02:39but also, as J. Kidd pointed out,
02:41he's always going to get time covering the other team's
02:43best offensive player.
02:45Kevin Durant was not good in the second half
02:47against the Mavs, and it went a long way
02:48to them getting that win.
02:49P.J. does it all.
02:51Indeed, he does.
02:52And take note, five steals tied a career high in that game.
02:56Mavs and Nets are both playing well going into tonight's matchup,
02:59and the reason that Brooklyn is playing well,
03:01well, they've got Mr. December.
03:03Richie Jackson, Mr. October.
03:05Derek Jeter, Mr. November.
03:06Michael Porter Jr.'s Mr. December.
03:08More on him after this.
03:10is brought to you by Talk Talk Casinos and Resorts, where the players play.
03:14By Home Zone Furniture.
03:17Come see why we are different.
03:19And by DraftKings Pick 6.
03:21Use promo code MAVS for an exclusive sign-up offer.
03:24The first Mavericks game since Saturday.
03:28Tonight at home, Dallas host of Brooklyn Nets.
03:30Great to have you tuned in on Mavs TV.
03:31We're looking forward to this game tonight.
03:33Mavericks playing well.
03:34They've won four of their last five.
03:35Brooklyn playing well, winning three of their last four,
03:37led by Michael Porter Jr.
03:38He's a very talented scorer, has the ability to be able to rise up
03:42and shoot over small defenders, and like Clay Thompson,
03:45has an insane confidence in his ability to make contested shots.
03:49Had a lot of time with Jokic early on in his career,
03:52so he knows how to play without the ball.
03:54He understands how defenses try to take him away.
03:57His counters are on point.
03:58He is ahead of the snake offensively and will challenge his Mavs defense.
04:03Key matchup tonight with P.J. Gardner.
04:05FACOM Player Insights showed that Michael Porter Jr.
04:08leads all Eastern Conference players in scoring in December,
04:11over 34 points a game, and of course is doing it efficiently,
04:1455% from the floor, over 51 from the yard, adding nearly nine boards
04:18and moving the ball at four assists a game as well.
04:21We mentioned a moment ago that Dallas is playing well,
04:24having won four of their last five and a big factor in three recent wins.
04:28The man in the middle, the five-man, Anthony Davis.
04:31And Leslie will have more on him, and we'll have the lineups to tip off
04:34right after Mavericks basketball on Mavs TV,
04:37brought to you by Home Zone Furniture.
04:39We're less than a minute away from tipping off.
04:41Mavs and Nets at American Airlines Center.
04:43Starting lineups brought to you by Home Zone Furniture.
04:45This is Brooklyn's most frequently used starting lineup.
04:48Porter, Clowney, Terrence Mann, Nick Claxton, and Yegor Gilman.
04:54And for Dallas, the first time they used this starting lineup
04:56with Saturday's win against Houston.
04:58Ryan Nimhardt, Najee Marshall, Anthony Davis, P.J. Washington,
05:01and a rookie from Duke, Cooper Flagg.
05:04Let's get a report before tip off from Leslie DeCastle
05:08about the great Anthony Davis.
05:09Leslie.
05:10Yeah, well, Mark, with the unfortunate news this week
05:13that Derek Lively is out for the season,
05:15and with Daniel Gafford still out as well,
05:17that makes Anthony Davis' role with this team even bigger.
05:20And of course, as he's shown us lately, especially in these home games,
05:23he is up for the challenge.
05:25In his last three wins with the Mavs,
05:27he's averaging 26 points, almost 13 boards, and has been so efficient.
05:32When I asked Jason Kidd about his attitude playing the five now
05:35instead of the four, he said, well, he has no choice,
05:38but he has the ability to do whatever they need,
05:41and he's doing that, guys, while getting healthy.
05:43And monster games and wins against Miami, Denver, and Houston.
05:48And off we go at American Airlines Center.
05:50The Mavericks playing an Eastern Conference opponent three times this year,
05:54the first time that's ever happened in the history of the franchise.
05:57And in the last segment before the tip-off,
06:00Devin, you talked about how well Michael Porter Jr.
06:02learned to move off the ball playing with Nikola Jokic,
06:04and it was on display on the first possession.
06:06I was watching that last game,
06:07and something I've seen that they've made a little bit of a change.
06:09People respect his three-point shooting ability so much
06:12that they're taking it away.
06:13That opened up that back screen for a curl for a dunk,
06:16and we're going to see a lot of that.
06:17So with him having to create so much space out there on three-point line,
06:22you've got to look at those cuts at the rim, too.
06:24The aforementioned Anthony Davis just had an assist on Dallas' first basket.
06:28P.J. Washington is on the board to start the game for Dallas on offense tonight.
06:33P.J. is guarding Michael Porter Jr., got a hand on the shot,
06:36but actually in the end they're going to call that a foul on P.J.,
06:40and Scott Twardoski says that was a pass, not a shot.
06:44Which is surprising because Michael Porter Jr. loves to shoot.
06:48Yes, he does, he does.
06:50I could see where the confusion would come in, but yes.
06:54He is averaging over three assists a game.
06:57And he just got fouled on a three and made it.
06:59And that's two on P.J. Washington Jr. in the first minute.
07:02Not a great sign.
07:04Ouch.
07:04No.
07:06Kind of back to what I was talking about before.
07:08So they set a flare screen, and guys want to jump on the high side.
07:12That opens up the dunk.
07:13Now you're afraid of that.
07:14Now you jump on the low side.
07:15Now he's able to come off from a three-point shot open and knock down the three.
07:18So he puts you in such a bind because of that three-point shooting ability.
07:22And that ability is 39% of the season, but 51-plus percent over the last three games.
07:29Again, he leads all Eastern Conference players in scoring in the month of December.
07:35And the 34 are the three games he's appeared in this month.
07:41Well, he's on pace with about 250 points tonight.
07:43On pace guy making a very early appearance tonight.
07:47A defensive three-second violation.
07:50A choppy start to the game with a couple of fouls on Dallas.
07:53And then this defensive three-second call against the Nets.
07:56Let's take a look at the Volvo performance plan.
07:57Contain Michael Porter Jr.
08:00Not until a great start there.
08:02But there's still a lot of game left to be played.
08:04But also, I think the Mavs are at their best offensively when they have a balanced scoring attack.
08:08We'll see if that plays out.
08:11But I feel like that's a good recipe for them to have success, especially on the offensive end of the floor.
08:16Cooper flag missed the free throw for the defensive three seconds.
08:18Technical foul on Brooklyn.
08:21And the Mavs put the ball in play here to Anthony Davis.
08:25Mavs are six and nine on the home floor this year.
08:29Brooklyn is four and seven on the road.
08:31Four and four in their last eight road games.
08:34They've been better on the road than at home.
08:36They lost their first nine home games this year.
08:38They're just two and ten at home, but a couple of recent wins.
08:41Noah Clowney stepped out of bounds, so wave off the made three for the third-year big man from Alabama.
08:47That's a turnover for Brooklyn.
08:51Big old pause got in the way, staying out of bounds.
08:55Clowney's been playing well as of late.
08:57Four 20-point scoring games this year, and they've all been within the last eight games for Brooklyn.
09:02Here's the drive inside by Najee Marshall.
09:04And a rare paint miss, but it won't count as a paint miss because he was packed in the X.
09:09And we'll go to the free throw line.
09:14J.K.'s showing a lot of trust with P.J. after picking up those two quick fouls, leaving him in the game.
09:20Got to show some real headiness right now, not picking up that third.
09:24Well, we just saw Najee Marshall drive into the paint.
09:26Guys, he's shooting 68.5% on paint field goal attempts this year.
09:31That's eighth among qualifying players in the NBA.
09:34It leads all players 6'7 or less.
09:37Yes. Say it. Say it. Say it proudly.
09:41And lately, it's been something that you can write down almost every time.
09:4624-28 on paint field goal attempts in the stretch of five games, of which Dallas has won the last four of those last five.
09:51He gets in the paint. He's going to score.
09:53Yeah. It's an elite float game, as we're fond of saying.
09:56Diego Geoman misses the three-pointer.
09:58Rookie from BYU.
10:00I think he's 14 years old. How old is that guy?
10:03He's 19. Yeah, you couldn't read your own handwriting when you were doing notes.
10:08You wrote down 19, and it looked like 14.
10:11Then I saw his face, and I was like, I understand what you got with my son.
10:16There's a baby out there.
10:18This is his 15th start of the year.
10:22He's getting plenty of opportunities.
10:24Of course, the youngest player in the NBA is on the floor wearing a maverick jersey.
10:27Cooper flag.
10:28And the paint, Nick Claxton, that was a nice finish.
10:31Coming up with a strong game, had a triple-double.
10:33Last time this team was out.
10:36Brooklyn played on Saturday.
10:37That was their last game, just like Dallas' last game was on Saturday against Houston.
10:41Brooklyn beat and roll on Saturday, and Claxton had a triple-double to Devon Point.
10:45On target there for AD.
10:47And Claxton secures the rebound.
10:50On Saturday night, Claxton had 14 points, 11 boards, and 10 assists.
10:54And that second triple-double he's had this year.
10:56Noah Clowney puts up a three-pointer, and AD there for the defensive board.
11:00I want to go to AD down low, but Clowney grunting him, tipped the ball out of bounds.
11:11Leaving Dallas with 15 on the shot clock.
11:13Some pretty long arms on the entry pass, too.
11:16Here we go.
11:17Let's go back.
11:19Offensively, Clowney having the best season of his career, 13 points a game.
11:25Made a play defensively, forcing Dallas to throw in with 15 on the shot clock, now down
11:30to eight.
11:31Nimhart glances at the rim, puts it down, makes a decision to find Cooper Flagg in the corner.
11:35He had a one-bounce dribble, and drills the jump shots.
11:39Nicely done.
11:40I think he's becoming more comfortable with that shot.
11:42That's what they're giving him.
11:43They're recognizing that he likes to drive, especially left, so that pull-up is going to
11:46be there.
11:47And you know what I noticed on that, Devon?
11:49He got good balance.
11:50He wasn't drifting left when he shot it, he went left, but then he went straight up
11:54with good balance.
11:55Great recognition by Nimhart.
11:56It's a nice jab step.
11:59So the balance is there, rising up, knocked it down.
12:02I think that was plaguing him a little bit early in the year, was drifting on that jumper.
12:09But everything going in at a high clip over the last five games for Cooke.
12:1223 points a game, 55 percent from the floor.
12:15Ian Mahler.
12:16Well, they moved Marshall along to Porter because of the early foul trouble for P.J., and Porter scores
12:19again.
12:20He's got a foul on Ryan Nimhart on that sequence, by the way, so three team fouls on
12:26Dowell.
12:27Three and a half minutes in.
12:32Keep operating out front.
12:34He's got on the floor with a jumper, and now he goes to the cup.
12:38Just the simplicity of the pull-up jump shot on that last possession now opens up the drive.
12:46Playing the game, it's watching this young man grow.
12:49Okay, they're going to fight over the screen.
12:50A little bit too hard.
12:51That gives me an open lane to the left, which I like to go, and he can finish that with
12:56good efficiency with that left hand.
12:58Strength and finesse both.
13:00Corner three for Michael Porter, Jr.
13:02And P.J.
13:03And P.J.
13:04has it.
13:05Max Christie's come to the table.
13:06He'll be the first player off the bench for the Mavs in this game.
13:10Perhaps for Washington, he's got that early foul trouble.
13:13He's navigated the last three-plus minutes after picking up two of the first minutes.
13:17And there is a pirouette and a shot to Coupe.
13:20No good from the elbow, and Terrence Mann brings it up the floor for Brooklyn.
13:25And a steal by Davis.
13:26Numbers.
13:27Give it up.
13:28Yeah, nice save for P.J.
13:29And running the floor and flushing Cooper flag.
13:36Great sequence.
13:37Back in the front end for the Mavericks from A.D. to P.J. to Coupe for the chance.
13:44Caught on the move by Marshall.
13:46And there's Marshall.
13:47Ride him down.
13:48Anytime he probes into the paint.
13:50Time out.
13:53Time out called by Brooklyn.
13:54Mavericks in front by three.
13:56Nice little push here.
13:57Six straight points.
13:58And one of them was an offense to defense sequence.
14:01Get it in transition.
14:03Let Cooper do the rest.
14:05Three-level score.
14:06Nine days away from Cooper Flag's 19th birthday.
14:10And he's in the driver's seat tonight, brought to you by your North Texas Chevy dealers.
14:14Most points per game.
14:16Now, 34 players have played in an NBA game before turning 19 years old.
14:20So, the top scorer in points per game before turning 19 was now the NBA's all-time leading scorer.
14:27LeBron James, who averaged 20.2 in the 31 games he played before he turned 19 years old.
14:34Coop is next on the list at over 17 points a game.
14:37And he's still got up to four games more to play in, including tonight before he turns 19.
14:42Devin Booker, one game.
14:43It was against Dallas.
14:44Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant.
14:46That was Kobe's entire rookie season.
14:4971 games, averaging seven and a half points per game in his rookie season.
14:54That's a heck of a list to be a part of.
14:56Yeah.
14:58Going out of the time out for the time of the game.
15:01And Yegor Dillman does that.
15:04Let's go, LeBron.
15:06We found out during the break that Devin's got some beef with him.
15:09I don't have beef.
15:10Did you know that?
15:11I did not have beef.
15:12I said it with disdain.
15:15BYU and Wisconsin played in the tournament last year and it didn't go well.
15:19It did not go well.
15:20For the Badgers.
15:21Yeah.
15:22I'm sorry to say.
15:23We played again.
15:24I played him again this year and it did not go well again.
15:26They currently have your number?
15:27Yeah.
15:28Well, it's Yeoman with the ball right now.
15:31Smothered by Anthony Davis on the block.
15:34Wow.
15:35Cross-court pass with an offensive rebound and Noah Clowney found Terence Van for a three ball.
15:40I feel like AD did that for Wisconsin even though he's a Kentucky guy.
15:44That's what I felt, you know.
15:45I mean, Coach Cowell is here tonight from Kentucky, so.
15:48He's got college basketball on his mind tonight's skin.
15:51He did come in to T.J. Washington after the timeout.
15:56And puts up his first three of the game.
15:58This is seven to the NBA and three-point percentage going into play tonight.
16:02Just over 46 and a half percent in downtown.
16:06Terence Mann initiated the offense.
16:09Now Claxton in a place for a dribble handoff.
16:12They do a lot of that.
16:14Border went down on the contest from Duke.
16:17No whistle and a miss three.
16:19Dallas had a 6-0 run before the timeout.
16:23Nets have a 6-0 run after the timeout.
16:25Nimhart tried to put a stop to that.
16:27Balls for Marshall on the offensive glass.
16:29He'll give it up.
16:30Nice ball movement.
16:31Max Christie three-pointer.
16:32Yes, sir.
16:35You know, Nimhart could have shot that,
16:37but he allowed Max to step into it with great rhythm and shoot it.
16:40That was a nice pass.
16:41Point guards do.
16:42Yeah, man.
16:43Third dime of the game for Ryan Nimhart.
16:45Attacking a closeout.
16:46Here is Porter around AD into the basket.
16:50The three-point shot just creates so much space for him,
16:53and the fear of that allows so much more open score for him to operate.
17:00Knifeing into the lane.
17:01Here's Nimhart.
17:02Christie able to sidestep a defender on the three-point shot,
17:06but it's way off target.
17:09Terrence Mann with a straightaway three.
17:15Christie there with the rebound.
17:17And this three-point shooting thing has been throughout Michael Porter Jr.'s career, by the way.
17:22He shot over 40%.
17:23And his six season was different as that little runner drops in for Coop.
17:28Driving into the paint.
17:29Nicely done.
17:30You asked me a question earlier to predict.
17:32Oh, yes.
17:33That's right.
17:34I did.
17:35An off-air, another off-air.
17:36I said, give me.
17:37Oh.
17:38He claxing with the end one.
17:39Looking at it right now and the pace of what he's playing at
17:41and the shots he's getting, it's going to be a 30-point night for Coop.
17:44Oh, I like that.
17:47Well, he's got eight already.
17:49And he has scored inside and outside.
17:53And we have a coach's challenge.
17:55There is a foul called on AD on this Nick Claxton-made basket.
18:00We'll have the results when we come back.
18:03Team.
18:04And Brooklyn's not going to add another point to that.
18:07They're not going to have a three-point play opportunity.
18:10Score the basket here for Nick Claxton,
18:11but a successful coach's challenge for Jason Kidd.
18:14There will be no foul on Anthony Davis here,
18:18which is what the call was on the floor.
18:20So take Davis's first foul off the board.
18:24And no three-point play opportunity for the Brooklyn Nets.
18:29Here's tonight's Choctaw game within the game.
18:32Brooklyn after a 3-and-16 start, including 0-and-7,
18:36much like the Mavericks playing well lately.
18:38That's what Brooklyn is doing over the last four games.
18:40They've won three, shooting the ball well.
18:43Defense has really tightened up for Brooklyn as well.
18:46They've defeated Chicago, Charlotte, and New Orleans in these three wins.
18:51The one loss was a home game to the Utah Jazz.
18:53I'm talking to Jordy before the game.
18:55He's talking about, obviously, the youth of the team has
18:58and having to go through some of that turmoil early in the season.
19:01You guys have to learn how to win, but finding winning combinations out there
19:05and love the way that the guys are playing, especially the start of December.
19:11Mavericks are a 500 team over the last 12 games,
19:13and Brooklyn is close to that after their open seventh start.
19:16Here's Clowney operating inside.
19:18Nice footwork.
19:20Clowney with that basket is on the board for tonight's game.
19:27Remember, he had a Maverick wiped off the board because he stepped out of bounds.
19:31Another attack by Coop.
19:32This one holds off the rim.
19:33Dallas has had two good looks inside.
19:35The White Powell and Coop have finished his last two good looks.
19:39The Dallas has the all-back after the defensive board by Nick Claxton.
19:44Looks like he stepped out of bounds.
19:46His heels went on that line.
19:48He's got to work on his Sean Elliott.
19:50Got to keep those heels up.
19:52He's still questioning it.
19:54He had moved from the spot until just now.
19:57They were on Sharp is going in for him.
20:00Got Tyrese Martin in the game for Brooklyn as well.
20:04I still don't see him stepping out.
20:06Let me hear those hands.
20:07Oh, Clowney touched him when he was out of bounds.
20:10Oh, that's fast.
20:11Wow, Dwight Powell.
20:13Well, Dallas made something happen.
20:15Getting the ball back after a little miscue underneath.
20:19Now, here's Porter.
20:24Guarded by Clay Thompson.
20:26Nine points of the game already for Porter.
20:28Looking for an assist here at Cook with a big swat against Dayron Shark.
20:33That was old Duke versus North Carolina action right there.
20:36And then a kick attack.
20:37And a score for Cook.
20:39Oh, he has been determined.
20:42One early jump shot, but then everything else riding inside sets.
20:45And he's already in the double-seekers in the game.
20:48As it was initially missed by Porter, but then he taps in his own miss.
20:53Let's go, man.
20:54Oh, man.
20:55I like these highlights where it's a defensive play and offensive play all in the same highlight
20:59by one dude.
21:00Yeah.
21:01He's the youngest player in the league.
21:02He even hit for Clay Thompson.
21:04Is that a good sign, Devin?
21:06It is a great sign.
21:07And you know what else is a good sign?
21:09He was looking, while we were doing the opening, and we obviously were featuring him,
21:12he was looking at his numbers and like, don't worry, guys.
21:14That number's going to go up.
21:15That number's going to go up.
21:16I love it.
21:17That number's going to go up.
21:18He has been trending up.
21:19Three-point percentage going up each month.
21:21See Cooper coming on the weak side.
21:23Great timing here.
21:24Catching it at the top.
21:25Nope.
21:26With the block.
21:27And then obviously in transition and open space, you give him a lane.
21:30He's able to take that and finish.
21:32Maniacs, tell me out.
21:34What a fun player.
21:36Just a baby.
21:37You'd say the same for Drake Powell, 20 years old, one year in Carolina.
21:42He goes through the ball and bounce.
21:44To another rookie, Danny Wolf misses inside.
21:46Let's go, man.
21:47This is the youngest team in the NBA, Brooklyn.
21:48Average age, 24 years, 46 days old.
21:51Coop, a little hesitation.
21:53That's right against Sharp.
21:54Way off the glass.
22:00Six of eight in the first quarter.
22:02A dozen on the board for Coop.
22:07Drake Powell, pass stolen.
22:09Max Christie got a hand on it.
22:11Dallas has got a nice run going on right now.
22:13They're up by three.
22:14Here's Christie.
22:15Blocked inside by Sharp.
22:17It's a scramble for the loose ball.
22:19And it's Thompson missing a three.
22:25Play made his first.
22:27Missed that one from long range.
22:29Last 13 games, he's shooting almost 40% on it.
22:32Whoa!
22:33Carter Williams, no good on a three-point try.
22:34But it's a tip-out rebound by Tyrese Martin.
22:37It's controlled out near center court by De'Ron Sharpton.
22:41Martin probing, baseline, looking for the big guy inside.
22:44Sharps headed to the line after he was fouled with 135 left in the first quarter.
22:49First foul on Dwight.
22:50Cooper flag, 21 consecutive games in double figure scoring.
23:02The Maverick rookie record belongs to Jay Vincent.
23:06He scored in double figures in 65 straight games in the 81-82 season.
23:10Michigan State beast.
23:12Yes, Luca.
23:13You had to say it.
23:14You had to say it.
23:15He did have to say it.
23:16Luca at 28 straight games in double figures.
23:19Dennis Smith Jr. and Jamal Mashburn at 23.
23:22Cook now fifth on the list at 21.
23:25He was tied for fifth with Mark Aguirre who, of course,
23:28we're about six weeks away from him having his jersey retired.
23:31Yeah, and the reason Mark Aguirre didn't have more is he got injured his rookie year,
23:34which is why Jay Vincent got so much time.
23:37But Mark Aguirre was the first pick of the first round
23:40and Jay Vincent was the first pick of the second round,
23:42and those boys lit it up their rookie year.
23:44Yeah, and that 65-game stretch where Jay Vincent scored in double figures in each one of them,
23:48he averaged.
23:49I mean, this was not just barely into double figures.
23:51No, he was going.
23:52Yeah, it was 24 points a game of those 65 games, man.
23:55He went from playing with Magic Johnson to playing in the NBA and did it well.
24:00Blake Thompson for third.
24:02Again!
24:05Ponding to the trip down the floor where Brooklyn came away with two points
24:09on the freebies by Sharp.
24:11Blake Thompson knocks down his second three in Dallas' third here in the first quarter.
24:15Max Christie has one as well.
24:17And Brooklyn hits another three-pointer.
24:19They take a ton of them.
24:21And they're making a lot of them tonight.
24:24Kylie's Martin connection.
24:30No airspace here for Thompson, so he got around the defender, Martin,
24:34and finds another excellent three-point shooter.
24:36It's missed by Christie.
24:37It's kept alive by Powell.
24:39And then finally, the carom is claimed by De'Ron Sharp for Brooklyn.
24:43Brooklyn in position to manage the clock going two for one here at the end of the first quarter.
24:47Zier Williams in and out.
24:49And then Dallas running the floor.
24:51Maybe they'll have the two for one here at the end of the quarter.
24:53They do!
24:54And a chance for three the old-fashioned way.
24:57Christie makes a whole bunch of threes.
25:00But this is the old-school way to put three on the board for Max.
25:03This is pace right here.
25:04Great recognition coup.
25:06The pass ahead.
25:07Max shielding the defender.
25:10Nice long strides here.
25:12They will get that when they go through contact.
25:15All good signs offensively with the pace in this first quarter.
25:24Those two guys you just saw on the replay.
25:26Max and Clay, they're the top two players for Dallas when it comes to making threes this year.
25:30In terms of fifth-year number.
25:32Going into play tonight, Thompson had 63.
25:34Christie had 62.
25:36And they each added to that total with two from Clay Thompson,
25:39and one main three, and then a three-point play for Max.
25:42Green ball with Drake Powell and De'Ron Sharks.
25:46Leaves it for Danny Wolfe and Wolfe.
25:49Gale and Michigan in his collegiate career.
25:52Three seasons.
25:53Two at Gale, one at Michigan.
25:54Danny Wolfe's on the board.
25:59This is Thompson looking for Powell stolen by Wolfe.
26:02There's five seconds for Brooklyn.
26:04And it's Tyrese Martin.
26:05They've got a chance to go in front.
26:06Dyer Williams scoring off the Dallas turnover
26:09on the last shot of the first quarter.
26:11They take a one-point lead out of the opening quarter of the game.
26:22The Cooper flag made his presence felt with a dozen points in the first quarter.
26:27Scoring all kinds of different ways.
26:29Najee Marshall as well.
26:31Brooklyn in front by one after one.
26:33Our coverage of Mavs basketball on KFAA and Mavs TV 33-32.
26:38Brooklyn leads Dallas after one.
26:40The Baylor Scott and White Health pulse check.
26:42First quarter stats.
26:43Both teams identical shooting the ball.
26:4513-25 with 52% in the first quarter.
26:48Brooklyn made a couple more threes.
26:50Bench points and fast break points.
26:52Both favor Dallas.
26:53For Dallas.
26:54The latter far more significantly.
26:56I think that's a key part of the match.
27:00Let's go.
27:01Brooklyn scores the fewest fast break points.
27:03Backcourt violation.
27:04Backcourt violation.
27:05Dallas turns it over.
27:06Yeah.
27:07So Brooklyn scores the fewest fast break points.
27:0910 per game.
27:10And they give up the third most fast break points.
27:14About 18 per game.
27:15So we're talking about a between 7 and 8 point difference in fast break points every game
27:20to the negative for Brooklyn.
27:22And Dallas is 9 to the good in that regard after one quarter.
27:25We'll see if they can make that turn into some more success on the scoreboard.
27:30They do trail right now and just gave the ball up with that turnover.
27:33That backcourt violation.
27:34Danny Wolf misses.
27:35P.J. Washington back in the game after early foul trouble.
27:38Blocks Daron Sharp on a putback.
27:40Wolf.
27:41Bluffs the three.
27:42Sidesteps the closeout and hits.
27:46Well Danny Wolf has been in the rotation as of late over the last five games fellas.
27:50About 13 points a game and shooting 46% on threes.
27:53He looked like he could shoot that thing on that position.
27:57Down goes Anthony Davis on the foul called against Daron Sharp.
28:05The fifth made three of the game for Brooklyn.
28:08I'm sorry the sixth right?
28:09Yeah sixth.
28:10Home fake little slide to the left and.
28:15It's pretty good for the roof.
28:16I wonder if he's related to Peter Wolf from the J. Giles band.
28:21It's a project for halftime.
28:23Defensive three seconds Nolan Traore.
28:26A rookie from France.
28:2819 years old in his fifth NBA game.
28:31He's the guilty party in the defensive three second violation.
28:35It will be Klay Thompson's 16th free throw attempt of the season.
28:39Hey Mavs fans, DraftKings pick six is now available in Texas and you can make picks live once games have tipped off.
28:52Download the DraftKings pick six app now and sign up with code Mavs.
28:56You got three players between six and twelve so far for Dallas.
29:02You were talking balance scoring part of your Volvo performance plan tonight Devin.
29:07A.D. looking for P.J. pass behind him turnover.
29:10Thought that was coming my way.
29:11I was ready.
29:12I was ready.
29:13Were you going to shoot skin?
29:14I was actually going to fight you for it.
29:16That's five turnovers committed by Dallas and Brooklyn's been really good off the first four turnovers having already converted for 11 points.
29:27Danny Wolf with it running a pick and roll.
29:29Sharp was the roller.
29:30Wolf the ball handler.
29:32Finds Tyrese Martin.
29:33Now Martin on the drive against Klay Thompson.
29:37In the paint he scores.
29:40Got his angle finished strong.
29:44Martin's trying to get his shooting form back at a good place.
29:50He was a D&P coach's decision in their last game because the three games before that he was four for 19 from the floor.
29:56There's a paint catch for Anthony Davis and as he caught it down low he was fouled.
29:59His first personal second team foul.
30:02Two team fouls on Brooklyn.
30:04That's the first in the game on Danny Wolf.
30:06Backside again Danny.
30:07Backside again.
30:08Backside again.
30:09Backside again.
30:13We need to pump a little life into this building on a Friday night.
30:18It's an 8-0 run right now for Brooklyn.
30:21Up by five.
30:22Here's Klay Thompson around the defense on the drive.
30:25Nimhart caught it and moved it in one motion.
30:27Bound Max Christie to beat the shot clock.
30:30That'll do it.
30:32Tough shot.
30:34Contested three with the clock on his back.
30:42Nolan Traore on the drive and kick looking for Zaire Williams.
30:45Misses on a three-point try.
30:47Williams 30% on threes this year.
30:50Career 31% three-point shooter.
30:52Here's a step back three for Tyrese Martin and it's in.
30:58So in those three games where he was four of 19 for the floor that included one of 13 on threes.
31:04But Martin is back in good form tonight.
31:06Three of three including two of those from downtown.
31:09Reflection out of bounds by Danny Wolf.
31:10That was when you get a layup to go get that confidence up.
31:13See that ball go through the rim.
31:19Road team won both games in the series last year.
31:22Dallas late in the year one at Brooklyn and in the Nets.
31:25Just over a week later returned the favor here in Dallas.
31:28Runner here by A.D.
31:30He likes that little runner going left.
31:33Yes.
31:35That I believe was his game winning shot move last year in the late season contest where Dallas beat Atlanta.
31:40After they had lost a home game to Brooklyn.
31:42Big block on the drive by Traore by Christie.
31:46And running the floor it's an alley-oop from Blake Thompson to P.J. Washington who just stole the inbounds pass.
31:51Blake Thompson for three.
31:52Three bullseye.
31:54Wow.
31:56Five points in the snap of a finger thanks to P.J. Washington and Clay Thompson.
32:03And it started with defense.
32:05Max Christie.
32:06Not A.D. Max Christie policing the paint.
32:09Giving go to P.J. on the break and you give it back to me I'll give it back to you and I'll show you what I can do with it.
32:18Mavericks are on a seven nothing run over the last 23 seconds of game action.
32:24And we're just under nine to play in the first half.
32:26It's the Mavericks in front of Brooklyn 43 41.
32:29More on that balanced scoring because with what Clay Thompson and Max Christie have done in this run for the Mavericks here in the last little bit have lifted their numbers up.
32:38You've got two and double figures another player with nine and Washington and Marshall four piece.
32:42And doing all this without A.D. actually having a big impact offensively but that shows what that balance scoring can do for you opens up the court for everybody to be aggressive.
32:53First basket of the game as a matter of fact was that runner that he had here just a little bit ago Tyrese Martin flings up a three and hits it.
33:02That's a good looking shot.
33:03I don't know nothing about that stretch I missed where he couldn't hit the broad side of a bar but he locked in right now.
33:12It happens with players you know go through shooting struggles throughout the season but shoot or shoot.
33:17Shoot or shoot.
33:18In the lane it's A.D. looking for a second basket of the game that was blocked by Claxton.
33:24Goal 10 hard to tell from here.
33:27Claxton a good shot blocker.
33:29Noah Clowney for three.
33:31Rebound for Christie.
33:34Advances it on the pass to Nembhard who will throw it forward another opportunity for A.D. down low.
33:39Draws in the defense Clay Thompson over the rookie with a three point try.
33:42Just a hair short.
33:46Now Claxton driving through the defense.
33:50I think we've got another block here by Max Christie and the ball's out of bounds on Brooklyn.
33:54Is that Max or P.J.?
33:57Well let's see.
34:01I believe it's P.J. Scott.
34:03He's everywhere.
34:05P.J.'s fingers.
34:07Had five steals in one block and has returned to play on Saturday night.
34:09The five steals.
34:12The five steals for P.J. ties his career high.
34:16Boy and there were some nice rips too like on the ball handler at midcourt.
34:21Not just jumping the passing lanes.
34:23P.J.'s a good shot blocker this year.
34:26At 1.2 per game that places him 18th in the league in block shots per contest.
34:32Recorded that block shot a moment ago for a Maverick team for the year that's fourth in the league
34:37and blocks at nearly six a game.
34:43Marshall from Klay Thompson.
34:45And driving against rookie Nolan Traore and fouled.
34:51Another probe into the paint.
34:55Traore called for the foul.
34:56And a trip to the free throw line to give the Mavericks the lead if he hits both.
35:03Najee Marshall with 7.38 left of the first half.
35:05Marshall on the year 80% on free throws and shooting 65% for the floor averaging almost 16 points over the last five games all starts.
35:19Crafted for those who love the game on and off the court style meets precision with the Tissot Super Sport NBA Special Edition.
35:27In it for your chance to win yours at bit.ly slash Maverick sweepstakes.
35:33And Dallas does take the lead on the Marshall free throws.
35:35He found out three minutes max maybe a minute or two before that game in Los Angeles when PJ stepped on a ball in the layup line and couldn't play.
35:49Marshall went into the starting lineup and he's been a fixture there ever since.
35:52Obviously the replacement for PJ while he missed those four games played so well they rolled with him in the last two games as a starter since PJ's been back.
36:01Finally missing one is Martin because it was he with less than a second remaining on the shot clock.
36:07Najee's game translates no matter where he is on the floor coming off the bench starting.
36:12He's gonna bring the same energy.
36:14I think they'd like the bigger lineup with those two guys in it together.
36:18Got some long range defenders on the floor when you're starting PJ Coop, AD and Najee Marshall.
36:29Porter with the rebound after PJ missed.
36:36Michael Porter flips up a pass and it's caught and jammed home in one motion by Claxton.
36:43Talked about those assists he's been getting this year earlier.
36:47That was a nice little dish.
36:49Over three dimes a game this year for Porter.
36:51Skip pass to Marshall in the corner.
36:53Misses on a three-point try but there's AD to clean up the offensive glass but it spun out somehow.
37:00Right there on the doorstep looking to put Dallas back in front.
37:03In the game that's had six ties and seven lead changes.
37:07Drive here by Noah Clowney looking for another alley-oop to Claxton.
37:11And there's been a foul called here against Brooklyn.
37:15Sometimes Davis blocks shots, sometimes he draws charges.
37:18Noah Clowney on the charge here.
37:24Nice take here by AD.
37:25Back in the fourth round, Mavs.
37:27Brandon Williams.
37:29And by Cowell.
37:31Got a lot of changes here in the lineup for the Mavs.
37:34Powell's back in the game.
37:36Brandon Williams has returned.
37:42Now Brandon Williams going downhill and he misses on a layup attempt.
37:46The Mavs have had some opportunities to retake that lead.
37:49They've missed some chippies.
37:50Here's Clowney attacking again.
37:52And this time he scores.
37:54Tough finish.
37:55Yeah.
37:56Allen falling down.
37:59Blindly threw it up at the rim but a good thing happens.
38:07Taking the handoff back to Marshall.
38:09Williams put it down.
38:10Brandon lost it.
38:11And here is Edward Yeoman.
38:13Tough shot.
38:14Williams with a rebound and a fouls call too.
38:16B. Will got the board and it was about to have to make an acrobatic difficult save in.
38:22But the foul.
38:24Fines the need for that.
38:25That was the turnover by Williams.
38:27Also to get back.
38:29Now it's just a good job of defending.
38:32B. Will cleans it up.
38:36And we got the foul on Terrence Mann.
38:38It is nice to get a steal when the ball just comes to you.
38:40Yeah.
38:41You know take that for the box score.
38:42After twelve in the first quarter.
38:46Coops back in the game here.
38:47Midway through the second.
38:49Marshall trying to wedge his way up the baseline.
38:51Finds Powell in the paint.
38:53And just enough to get it over the iron and score.
38:57Before that the Mavericks had missed six shots in a row.
39:01But that streak comes to an end.
39:03With Dwight Powell scoring and drawing a foul as well.
39:07Dwight is finding himself in the right spot typically when there's
39:11penetration on the baseline.
39:13Biggs are taught to flash to the middle.
39:16Great that little pocket there.
39:20Muscled it in.
39:22523 left in the second quarter.
39:24Powell ties the game.
39:26And here's more from Leslie McCaslin.
39:27Leslie.
39:28Well guys we often talk about just how tough P.J. Washington is.
39:31How he compliments and comes at the game.
39:34And Najee Marshall is so similar to him.
39:36In fact Jason Kidd talked about that earlier.
39:38Both can handle the ball.
39:39Both have that just toughness.
39:41That X factor.
39:42And he holds guys accountable.
39:44He can also guard one through four too.
39:46Just like P.J. does.
39:47So just unique to have those guys.
39:49Both of those guys with that same kind of personality on the team.
39:52Dog mentality.
39:53You could describe it.
39:56And that's a good thing to have.
39:57It's a great thing to have.
40:01He will run in the offense.
40:02Got it right back for Powell.
40:03Going downhill.
40:04He will rise up and score.
40:08Going near spot and going straight up.
40:11And giving the Mavericks the lead.
40:13As Williams scores for the first time in the game.
40:16Yeoman misses on the runner in the paint.
40:20Powell with the block out of the rebound.
40:22And in the open court.
40:23Here comes Koop.
40:24And two more on the board for him.
40:26Another attack mode score for Koop.
40:29Remising a bit after the main basket.
40:34But he's just 18 years old.
40:36He's going to shake it off.
40:37We know this.
40:38And we know he can do that.
40:40Going to the cup with regularity and a lot of success.
40:44Nets 48.
40:48So results last night.
40:50And the results of the last week plus for Dallas.
40:54Mavericks are now in 10th place in the Western Conference.
40:56Now look.
40:57The strength of the Western Conference is not what we expected it to be.
41:01There is no way that we thought a team that was seven games under 500
41:05would be in the play and tournament talk 25 games into the season guys.
41:09But Dallas is there.
41:11Memphis just lost Zach Eady.
41:13We'll see how they weather the storm with that.
41:15And I bring that up.
41:16Because Eady had been a big factor in them winning seven of their last 10 games.
41:19Including against Dallas.
41:21Suns have come back down some after Devin Booker's injury.
41:24The Warriors obviously have not played to their paper so far this year with the 13 and 12 start.
41:28It's not about necessarily how you start but how you finish.
41:31Obviously the first month of the season was not ideal dealing with a bunch of injuries for this Mavs team.
41:37But they're playing a great brand of basketball right now.
41:40And sometimes you've got to go through some things to figure out who you are as a team.
41:43And we're starting to see this team really compete.
41:46We'll see how that Western Conference race plays out here over the weeks and months ahead.
41:55Eastern Conference has been a little bit stronger this year if you look at the best teams outside of course of Oklahoma City who is far and away the best in the business.
42:04But the East after a slow start in cross-conference games has won almost 49% of games against Western Conference teams.
42:12Nice play there by B-Will since the beginning of November.
42:15So it's been basically 50-50 split between West and East since the start of November.
42:19Putting it down on the baseline.
42:21Defense to offense again for Dallas.
42:23Williams to steal.
42:24Marshall the basket driving up the baseline.
42:27Lots of transition stuff for the Mavs tonight.
42:30This is a 9-0 run now for Dallas after Brooklyn had gone ahead 48-45.
42:37Let's see who's going to be the best closing the quarter.
42:40Middle part of the quarter favoring Dallas right now.
42:43The quarter draws a foul.
42:46They smothered him.
42:49And fouled him.
42:50Did they?
42:51Yes.
42:52When you see Dwight literally close the distance.
42:55I mean.
42:56With the chest.
42:57Yeah.
42:58He's like I'm vertical man.
43:03I'm vertical.
43:04Well you're moving forward vertically.
43:09And Porter now on the free throw line.
43:11Where he is about 82% this season.
43:13Makes the first attitude.
43:18As you said Dwight close the distance.
43:20Not to be confused with what was said in Field of Dreams.
43:24Go the distance.
43:27And on the podcast on Take That With You.
43:28Damaris always loves to bring up things what he calls on brand follow-will.
43:31Uh-huh.
43:32During this five day break one night I was doing some notes.
43:35And I was watching TV on my YouTube TV app on the phone.
43:38Yeah.
43:39And Field of Dreams was on BBC America.
43:41So the fact that I would watch most of it in a commercial format on my phone.
43:46Is what Damaris feels is on brand follow-up.
43:48Did it have subtitles since it was BBC?
43:50No.
43:51It did not have subtitles on BBC America.
43:54Porter makes a three and has Brooklyn back to within one.
43:56And that's on brand for him.
43:58Porter is at 16.
44:00Remember he's averaging 34 points over his last three games.
44:05He has been hooping all year long but especially since the calendar turned over to December.
44:11For the year Porter is averaging almost 26.
44:13Marshall.
44:14Another downhill drive and it's in there.
44:16I love that when he just shoves you out of the way with his forearm.
44:20Such a good shove with the forearm.
44:25You could maybe call it a five arm.
44:27Yeah.
44:28Back to that.
44:29Might be able to call it.
44:30Eight points tonight for Dallas in the first half.
44:35They've got 30 already.
44:37You'll love to see it.
44:39Dyer Williams with the drive.
44:41Terence Mann with the drive.
44:42Oh and there's that dude.
44:43Porter again.
44:44And another assist for him.
44:45But it may be an offensive foul here.
44:47Dwight Powell.
44:48This is twice tonight we've seen Dallas players take charges against Brooklyn players driving
44:54and looking to throw alley-oopes.
44:56Most importantly centers.
44:57Dwight Langer in there.
44:59Stands there.
45:00Takes it.
45:01Yeah.
45:02Absolutely the right call.
45:03And it was AD against Noah Clowney earlier.
45:07Interesting little wrinkle in the defensive perspective of the first half.
45:16But unfortunately for Dallas it's going to go right back the other way.
45:19With an offensive foul called on the Mavs.
45:21Is that Darion PJ?
45:22Yeah.
45:23Sad to report that PJ just picked up his third foul of the game.
45:26And he's got a little problem with his right elbow as he's going out for the foul trouble.
45:31But.
45:34Hard collision there.
45:35And he's grimacing as he heads to the bench.
45:38He heads.
45:40Staying at the bench though which is a good sign.
45:46There is Porter on the pass inside.
45:48There's a crowd around Claxton.
45:50And the call is on the floor on this foul.
45:53Sounds like it was 13.
45:55Not as Marshall.
45:56This is the second person.
45:57It's the third two foul.
45:59Marshall's second.
46:00Dallas' 13 foul.
46:01And the call.
46:02Almost better letting him go up and foul him with the way he shoots free throw.
46:15He is at 69% this season.
46:18That is easily the best of Nick Claxton's career from a free throw shooting percentage perspective.
46:23Wow.
46:24Michael Porter Jr. has had a lot of wow moments tonight.
46:27And as of late.
46:28And there's another one.
46:307 of 11 from the floor.
46:333 of 5 from distance.
46:35And this has been a game that I feel like has delivered so far.
46:40We said earlier we were excited about this game.
46:42Dallas 4 of 5.
46:43Henson won 3 of 4.
46:44Both teams in good form coming into the game.
46:46And their offenses have looked exceptional in the game tonight.
46:51A little bit of misdirection with the pick and roll there.
46:54But you must be at the level when he is handling the ball.
46:57If he sees any space with nobody in front he's going to rise up.
47:01And he can shoot with the best of them.
47:04A.D. was fouled.
47:05He'll go to the free throw line with 2-0-4 left in the half.
47:08.
47:21Shooting splits in this game.
47:22Dallas 54 from the floor.
47:2436 from the arc.
47:26And currently 89% from the line.
47:3090 of this goes in.
