US President Donald Trump has drawn striking parallels between the Cold War-era “Miracle on Ice” and today’s Russia–Ukraine war, invoking the legendary 1980 Olympic hockey victory over the Soviet Union while discussing efforts to end the ongoing conflict. Speaking at a White House ceremony honoring the iconic US hockey team, Trump suggested the historic upset offers lessons for modern geopolitics as casualties continue to rise in Ukraine and Russia. His remarks come amid claims of diplomatic progress and renewed debate over America’s role in bringing the war to an end.

00:00A similar situation, isn't it? Let's see what happens.
00:03We're working on seeing if we can make a deal right now.
00:05We're going to see. We'll soon know, I guess.
00:09We're going to see a lot of death.
00:11Last month, fellas, 25,000 soldiers were killed in Ukraine and Russia.
00:1625,000. Can you imagine that?
00:19Maybe we should send our team over.
00:20Mr. President, if I could.
00:25You guys were a team of amateurs.
00:27What do you think about the NIL, the deals that are being made with players,
00:31and they're hopping around sports?
00:33What do you think about that? What are your thoughts on that?
00:35My thoughts are I don't like it.
00:37I don't like the nil. I don't like the portal.
00:40But that's the state of college sports today, and we have no control over that.
00:45I don't like it, and a lot of people that I've spoken to don't like it either.
00:48But we have no say.
00:50Well, I think we maybe do have a say.
00:52I think that it's a disaster for college sports.
00:55I think it's a disaster for the Olympics.
00:57Because, you know, we're losing a lot of teams.
00:59The colleges are cutting a lot of their – they would call them sort of the lesser sports.
01:05And they're losing them, like, at numbers nobody can believe.
01:09And they were really training grounds.
01:10Beautiful training grounds.
01:12Hard-working, wonderful young people.
01:15They were training grounds for the Olympics.
01:16And a lot of these sports that were training so well would win gold medals because of it.
01:21Those sports don't exist because they're putting all their money into football.
01:24And, by the way, they're putting too much money into football because colleges don't make – even the most successful universities don't make that much money.
01:33And you can't pay a quarterback $14 million to come out of high school.
01:38They don't even know he's going to be a very good player.
01:41I mean, they've tried a couple of times.
01:43$14 million and $12 million.
01:45And a couple of deals like that and the most successful colleges are losing money.
01:50And I think the NIL is a disaster for sports.
01:56It's horrible for the Olympics.
01:57And it's – I think it's actually horrible for the players.
02:01And you're losing all of these great sports.
02:03They're not college football.
02:05Even basketball is being affected.
02:07Basketball is second.
02:09But even basketball is being affected.
02:11They're putting all of their money in.
02:13And I know something about it.
02:15They will not be able to stop.
02:17You're going to have a college president.
02:18I'm telling you, sir, if we give a guard $7 million, we're going to win the national championship.
02:24And they'll give them $7 million and they won't win it.
02:26And even if they do – colleges cannot afford to be paying the kind of salaries that you're hearing about.
02:32And, frankly, if you didn't have a very strong salary cap in sports – and even then, in professional sports,
02:39it would – they'd all be out of business.
02:42Everyone.
02:43You're going to have these colleges wipe themselves out.
02:46And something ought to be done.
02:48And I'm willing to put the federal government behind it.
02:50But if it's not done fast, you're going to wipe out colleges.
02:53They're going to get wiped out, including ones that do well in football.
02:56They can't pay $12 million, $14 million, $10 million, $6 million for players.
03:02They won't be able to stop.
03:04They'll always be that one player.
03:06They only have that player that's going to win the national championship.
03:09And they'll have 100 colleges thinking the same thing.
03:13Colleges cannot afford to play this game.
03:15And it's a very bad thing that's happening.
