00:00:35is right it really was shocking to see and not just because I knew what happened there

00:00:40you couldn't imagine a scarier place for a body to be found we're trying to identify potential

00:00:49suspects John Adams was Shantae's boyfriend he said I'm your boyfriend I have a right

00:00:55Colin's name had been mentioned multiple times Colin told her to meet him in the shed and not to tell

00:01:04anybody she knew Ron he was missing he couldn't be located there was this stunning juxtaposition

00:01:12of good and evil and two places representing those very things a church and a spooky house

00:01:18I have never seen anything like it in a case that I've covered

00:01:22take me to that Wednesday night church service he starts talking about demon thoughts that's when

00:01:30it just exploded I grabbed the pew and I was like

00:01:51the haunted house confession down this back country road is an isolated stretch of land

00:02:02a place where hunters come looking for prey behind the fence just through the overgrown grass

00:02:10sits an abandoned farmhouse the few people who know it's here call it the haunted house

00:02:18this place is truly creepy straight out of a horror movie but one night the horror became real

00:02:29this was the scene of a crime so evil it haunted an entire community and made neighbor doubt neighbor

00:02:37everybody was suspect in the very beginning absolutely the search for justice would lead to a different

00:02:45house a house of worship had evil made its way there to

00:02:50to report this story I spent a lot of time in Brown County Texas and it became clear to me that faith is profoundly

00:03:02important to many in this community this tragic case for some tested that faith and for others

00:03:08caused them to lean more deeply into it

00:03:11you're going to meet people

00:03:12who truly look out for each other it's something that stuck with me and I think it will for you too

00:03:19for the congregation of North Lake Community Church this simple building was a refuge a place to sing and worship in peace a haven for people like Shantae Blankenship

00:03:34you walk in that church and you felt like this is home this is family and I really think that is what kept her coming back she felt safe yes

00:03:46Shantae was 25 and lived with her grandfather and boyfriend in a community on Lake Brownwood in central Texas

00:03:56Linda and Russell Lamond met Shantae at church

00:04:00Russell was the assistant pastor he and his wife took Shantae under their wing when she started showing up with a notebook and her own Bible

00:04:09you couldn't help but smile with her around because she just she she glowed

00:04:16you know she she glowed

00:04:18it didn't take a lot to make her happy

00:04:20Shantae's younger sister Destiny Jarvis

00:04:23you know she was happy with where she lived her church her neighbors you know going on her walks every day

00:04:29neighbors could count on seeing Shantae every day as she strolled her neighborhood by the lake

00:04:36Friday May 13th 2016 was no different except that evening Shantae went out for a walk and didn't come home

00:04:46her grandfather called Shantae's mom Michelle McDaniel

00:04:50my dad had called and said that Shantae hadn't came home

00:04:54we just my dad had kind of figured she had spent the night with one of her friends

00:04:58Shantae's mother wasn't too worried at first but as the hours ticked by that changed

00:05:05he told me she still wasn't home

00:05:08the next day her mom went to the house took a look around and saw that her purse was still there

00:05:15she didn't go anywhere without her purse it had kind of went over me something had happened

00:05:20Shantae's grandfather said normal for her not to communicate especially with him

00:05:25the family reported her missing to the sheriff

00:05:29and in a community this close word spread quickly

00:05:33a search was organized after church on Sunday

00:05:36were you surprised by how many people turned out to search?

00:05:40actually no she was loved by everybody and then in the moment we found out that she was missing

00:05:45it was like not even a thought let's look forward we had we had to find Shantae

00:05:50I remember coming down the hill back to the church and the parking lot's full

00:05:55probably two two hundred people all there to search for her

00:05:59yes

00:05:59since it was such a small community it's like she's got to be around here

00:06:05you know she couldn't have walked that far

00:06:07we searched under piles of leaves

00:06:10we searched under boats you know anything that would look like it would be hiding something

00:06:169-1-1 what's the location of your emergency?

00:06:19I have no idea where I'm at I am in the middle of nowhere

00:06:22we were looking for Shantae Blankenship

00:06:25it was Sunday afternoon Shantae had been missing almost 48 hours

00:06:30we found her

00:06:31deputies sped down a road five miles from Shantae's home to that abandoned farmhouse

00:06:39their body cameras were rolling as they met Charlie Radel and his girlfriend Jackie Neal

00:06:45we were just driving around looking for her

00:06:47everybody met at three at the church to go look for her and we were just driving around

00:06:52I walked around in the house

00:06:55uh-huh

00:06:55I didn't see nothing in there and went to all the outbuildings

00:06:58yeah

00:06:59and I was coming back and that storm cell over there had a bunch of grass knocked down

00:07:03so I run around and looked and there she is she's upside down in there

00:07:07and she is beat

00:07:08I got a daughter that age

00:07:12I don't mind it

00:07:15Brown County Sheriff's Office Investigator Scott Byrd responded to the scene

00:07:20what was the condition she was in?

00:07:23very brutal assault

00:07:24there was cuts, bruises all over her face and head

00:07:29so it was very clear to you from the beginning

00:07:31this is a murder investigation

00:07:33oh yes

00:07:33that meant all hands on deck

00:07:37Texas Ranger Jason Shea was called in to help

00:07:40I'm a dad, I've got kids

00:07:42it kind of hits home to you

00:07:45because we all have kids

00:07:47and it affects you

00:07:50I can tell just looking at you

00:07:53when you talk about it, it affects you

00:07:55yeah, sure

00:07:56a young woman, a violent murder

00:08:01it felt like it couldn't have been a first time killer

00:08:06the disappearance on Friday the 13th

00:08:08and the location where she was found

00:08:11is this some type of cult activity?

00:08:14it could have been anybody

00:08:15how long could a murderer hide?

00:08:18I can't grab a hold of it

00:08:20I can't find him

00:08:21all of a sudden it was almost like somebody turned the lights on

00:08:24and you were like, oh, and there he is

00:08:27I realize it's like I just put my face in front of a killer's face

00:08:31you know, I mean, that close

00:08:32Shante's mother, Michelle

00:08:45heard the sirens first

00:08:47then a friend who'd helped

00:08:49organize the searches

00:08:50came to find her in person

00:08:53I remember her telling me they had found her

00:08:55I remember falling to my knees

00:08:58screaming

00:08:58are there any words to describe

00:09:01what you felt

00:09:02I was lost

00:09:05I just, I lost myself

00:09:09at that moment

00:09:10I'd fell to my knees

00:09:11and asking why

00:09:12I was devastated

00:09:14yeah, devastated and in shock

00:09:17there's bad things that go on

00:09:19in the community

00:09:20anywhere

00:09:21you'll get that anywhere

00:09:22but

00:09:23her specifically

00:09:25why her?

00:09:27why would anyone

00:09:30want to hurt Shante?

00:09:33what was it about Shante that just really drew people to her?

00:09:36her love

00:09:37just

00:09:38just her

00:09:39I mean, just meeting her

00:09:42would make you just fall in love with her

00:09:44Stephen McDaniel is Shante's stepfather

00:09:47he'd known her since she was six years old

00:09:50what was Shante like?

00:09:52funny

00:09:53love music

00:09:54she had a good smile

00:09:55you couldn't question whether or not she was happy

00:09:57people not only noticed Shante's smile

00:10:01she had a sense of style too

00:10:03she thought everything was better in pink

00:10:06or with sparkles

00:10:07or glitter

00:10:08Shante was tiny

00:10:11not even five feet

00:10:13barely 90 pounds

00:10:14but she had big opinions

00:10:16and her grandfather Charlie

00:10:19the one she lived with

00:10:21was happy to give her whatever she wanted

00:10:23he'd helped raise her from birth

00:10:25I had her when I was 16

00:10:27I guess I was trying to live for me for a while

00:10:29I worked and I partied

00:10:31so

00:10:32she just became my dad's permanent

00:10:35kid pretty much

00:10:36growing up

00:10:38Shante needed extra care

00:10:40she developed more slowly than other kids

00:10:43so her walking

00:10:45her talking

00:10:46all of that was delayed

00:10:47if you talked to her

00:10:49you would know that she was different than

00:10:52a normal child

00:10:53she still kind of talked like a child

00:10:55it was like she aged

00:10:58to a certain point

00:10:59and she stopped

00:11:00how did she navigate

00:11:02those challenges?

00:11:04she just did

00:11:05she

00:11:06nothing ever bothered her

00:11:08she would figure it out

00:11:09but she didn't do it alone

00:11:12it seemed everyone in the neighborhood

00:11:14had a protective eye on her

00:11:16from her family

00:11:17her friends

00:11:18and of course

00:11:19her boyfriend

00:11:20John

00:11:21he spoiled her

00:11:22just like my dad

00:11:23she never went without

00:11:25as long as

00:11:26they were together

00:11:26sounds like he really took care of her

00:11:28he did take care of her

00:11:29so did her friends

00:11:31at church

00:11:32I understand

00:11:33that there were some times

00:11:34you would help her

00:11:36with the hymns

00:11:37that would be sung

00:11:38in church

00:11:38she stood right next

00:11:40to Linda and I

00:11:41in the choir

00:11:42she was like our daughter

00:11:43she felt like family to you

00:11:45yes

00:11:45and this is the church

00:11:47North Lake

00:11:47Shantae's church

00:11:49had become

00:11:49the makeshift headquarters

00:11:51for her search

00:11:52now it was where

00:11:53authorities launched

00:11:54their investigation

00:11:55Pastor

00:11:56how are you sir

00:11:59hey folks

00:12:22in the bottom of a cellar

00:12:26and a team of investigators

00:12:28canvassed Shantae's

00:12:30neighborhood

00:12:30retracing her final steps

00:12:33this really was

00:12:34the starting place

00:12:35for your investigation

00:12:36yes this is the very

00:12:37beginning of it

00:12:38besides the crime scene

00:12:39we knew that she

00:12:40had been over here

00:12:41so this is the main area

00:12:43where we focused

00:12:44a lot of our investigation

00:12:45a quick word

00:12:47about the hats

00:12:48I was fascinated

00:12:50Ranger Shea

00:12:51told me

00:12:52it's a tradition

00:12:52among Texas Rangers

00:12:54it's an actual

00:12:55part of their uniform

00:12:56and their hats

00:12:57are a light color

00:12:58because in the old westerns

00:13:00dark hats

00:13:01represented the bad guys

00:13:02I also have fond memories

00:13:04of the show

00:13:05Walker Texas Ranger

00:13:06so I can't lie

00:13:07I was excited

00:13:08to meet one

00:13:09in real life

00:13:10but what really

00:13:11stood out for me

00:13:12was the deep connection

00:13:13that Ranger Shea

00:13:14and investigator Bird

00:13:16had to this community

00:13:17what did you hope

00:13:18to find out

00:13:19somebody that had

00:13:20seen her

00:13:21or seen her

00:13:21get in a car

00:13:22with somebody

00:13:22a handful of neighbors

00:13:25had seen her

00:13:26at a local restaurant

00:13:27just a few hours

00:13:28before she disappeared

00:13:30then she went home

00:13:31said goodbye

00:13:32to her boyfriend

00:13:35at 6 p.m

00:13:36she set out

00:13:38for her walk

00:13:38right after

00:13:39eventually meeting up

00:13:41with a friend

00:13:41that friend

00:13:45that she and Shantae

00:13:47walked together

00:13:48for a couple of hours

00:13:49her grandpa called her

00:13:51right before we

00:13:53got to the end of the street

00:13:55said hey it's getting dark

00:13:56she was like

00:13:57it's okay

00:13:58papa

00:13:59I'll be home soon

00:14:01she says

00:14:02I'm walking

00:14:03and that's all

00:14:06and all she said

00:14:07her grandfather

00:14:08confirmed to police

00:14:10that call

00:14:10was at 8.48 p.m

00:14:13I think it's about

00:14:13the dose

00:14:14Caitlin said

00:14:16after that

00:14:16she and Shantae

00:14:17said goodbye

00:14:18she like

00:14:19kind of was laughing

00:14:20and just

00:14:21took off running

00:14:22down the road

00:14:38the killer was maybe

00:14:39following her

00:14:40waiting for her

00:14:44waiting for her

00:14:46and waited for that time

00:14:47to where she was

00:14:48by herself to

00:14:50take his chance

00:14:52what happened next

00:14:54was still a mystery

00:14:56but a bizarre clue

00:14:57was about to spark

00:15:42teenagers had

00:15:44nicknamed it

00:15:44the haunted house

00:15:46so it's obvious

00:15:47that people

00:15:48haven't lived here

00:15:48for years

00:15:49the floor is gone

00:15:51it's just

00:15:52joists going across

00:15:53you're gonna find

00:15:55snakes in there

00:15:56other living animals

00:15:57in there

00:15:58stepping up

00:16:00to the scene

00:16:00of the crime

00:16:01with investigator

00:16:03I'd only seen

00:16:05pictures of the

00:16:06crime scene

00:16:06to that point

00:16:07so arriving there

00:16:08immediately gave

00:16:09me chills

00:16:10it really was

00:16:11a haunted house

00:16:12standing in that

00:16:14very same spot

00:16:15where terrible

00:16:16things happened

00:16:17was emotional

00:16:18my heart broke

00:16:19thinking of Shantae

00:16:20being brought there

00:16:21in darkness

00:16:22murdered

00:16:23and then discarded

00:16:24this house

00:16:25was seemingly

00:16:26forgotten

00:16:27and it felt

00:16:28that the killer

00:16:28hoped the same

00:16:29would happen

00:16:30to Shantae

00:16:31what were you

00:16:32looking for

00:16:32immediately

00:16:33when you got here

00:16:34we looked for

00:16:34shoe prints

00:16:35what's being left

00:16:36in the dirt

00:16:37tire tracks

00:16:38looking for any

00:16:39kind of biological

00:16:40material

00:16:41blood

00:16:42hair

00:16:43I've got his

00:16:43body cam

00:16:44so we can

00:16:45get a video

00:16:47going over there

00:16:48investigators

00:16:49set up a grid

00:16:50search

00:16:51combing every

00:16:52inch of the

00:16:53property for clues

00:16:54there's good

00:16:55tire tracks

00:16:56that just dead

00:16:57end at the

00:16:57gate and back

00:16:58out

00:16:59and then there's

00:16:59spin out marks

00:17:00like someone's

00:17:02been through it

00:17:02recently or something

00:17:03they found

00:17:05Shantae's bracelets

00:17:06scattered across

00:17:07the grass

00:17:08here's another pink

00:17:13colored bracelets

00:17:13there was one

00:17:14on this side

00:17:15of the gate

00:17:18that tell you

00:17:19bracelet here

00:17:21both on the

00:17:22ground

00:17:22that somehow

00:17:24or another

00:17:24she's losing

00:17:25them off of

00:17:26her arm

00:17:26at that point

00:17:28we didn't know

00:17:28what caused

00:17:29that

00:17:29then in the

00:17:31gravel

00:17:32they found

00:17:32strands of

00:17:33brown hair

00:17:34you can kind of

00:17:36see right there

00:17:36in this grass

00:17:37where it looks

00:17:38like something's

00:17:39been through

00:17:39here right here

00:17:40yeah right here

00:17:41too

00:17:41yeah

00:17:42investigators

00:17:43concluded

00:17:43someone had

00:17:44dragged Shantae

00:17:46to the place

00:17:46where she was

00:17:47found

00:17:47her body had

00:17:49been thrown

00:17:49over the fence

00:17:50and then she

00:17:51was drugged

00:17:51by her hair

00:17:52to the cellar

00:17:53something very

00:17:55brutal happened

00:17:56out there

00:17:56you don't just

00:17:57walk and lose

00:17:58your hair

00:17:59and your bracelets

00:18:00and your jewelry

00:18:00traumatic events

00:18:02were happening

00:18:03just the brutality

00:18:04of it is what

00:18:05sticks out

00:18:07a rusty lawnmower

00:18:08blade near her

00:18:09body

00:18:10it was covered

00:18:11in blood

00:18:12and there's blood

00:18:13spatter on that

00:18:14brick so you know

00:18:15she's bleeding

00:18:16good

00:18:16there were deep

00:18:18cuts on Shantae's

00:18:19scalp and face

00:18:21bruises on both

00:18:22sides of her neck

00:18:23her arms and legs

00:18:25and something

00:18:27odd on her chest

00:18:29we didn't know

00:18:30what it came from

00:18:32it was

00:18:32kind of jagged

00:18:34lines

00:18:35almost

00:18:35like triangles

00:18:37we even took

00:18:39a picture of that

00:18:39and sent that

00:18:40to the FBI

00:18:40headquarters

00:18:41an autopsy

00:18:43revealed Shantae

00:18:44had died

00:18:45from blunt

00:18:46force trauma

00:18:47consistent with

00:18:48that bloody

00:18:48lawnmower blade

00:18:50she had also

00:18:51been sexually

00:18:52assaulted

00:18:53not only did we

00:18:55have a murder

00:18:55we had a rapist

00:18:56as well

00:18:57crime scene

00:18:58techs collected

00:18:59evidence at the

00:19:00scene and sent

00:19:01it out for DNA

00:19:02testing hoping

00:19:03it would lead

00:19:04them to Shantae's

00:21:50in Oklahoma

00:21:50tornado alley

00:21:51so storm

00:21:52cellars are

00:21:53very common

00:21:54it's where

00:21:54people shelter

00:21:55during a storm

00:21:56they're usually

00:21:57detached from

00:21:58the house

00:21:59with doors

00:21:59that lead

00:22:00underground

00:22:00this one

00:22:01was so

00:22:02overgrown

00:22:03that I

00:22:03almost couldn't

00:22:04even see it

00:22:04from where I

00:22:05was standing

00:22:06and for me

00:22:07it becomes

00:22:07its own

00:22:08character

00:22:08in this story

00:22:09just because

00:22:10of how

00:22:10eerie it felt

00:22:11what are

00:22:12the odds

00:22:12that he

00:22:13found her

00:22:14out there

00:22:14innocently

00:22:16sometimes

00:22:17where there's

00:22:17smoke
