Around The NFL with B Scott as the Panthers suddenly take control of the NFC South after the Bucs fall to the Falcons, and Todd Bowles goes unfiltered following the loss.
Transcript
00:00I wonder what inspiration was necessary for the Atlanta Falcons to not Atlanta Falcon.
00:04I'm going to be entirely honest.
00:06Watching this game on Thursday night, you had Thursday night football in division in the NFC South.
00:11You had Falcons at Buccaneers.
00:13Buccaneers broke up the cream sickles, which I appreciated.
00:15Very nice.
00:15Which was fun.
00:17The Falcons kind of had the Dirty Birds.
00:19They had the old, I think it was even before that, I think it was that 70s look.
00:22Yeah, because the Dirty Birds didn't have those red helmets.
00:25Fair, fair.
00:25They had black helmets.
00:26This was back in the, I don't even remember some of the players back then.
00:29No Tommy Nobis days or something like that.
00:31That is not a name that's going to refresh my memory there, Don Lopez.
00:33I'm just going to be entirely honest with you.
00:35That's a deep cut.
00:36Yeah.
00:37But the game, I mean, the Bucs are out to a two-touchdown lead at a point in this game,
00:42and they absolutely crumble.
00:43Or maybe you say, Kirk Cousins did the thing that he does against the Bucs.
00:47The last three times he's played them.
00:483-0, I think 1,100 yards, six touchdowns and an interception, I believe, if memory serves.
00:55Or maybe it's eight.
00:56I need to actually double-check this.
00:57But he go ham, they go ham, and I, knowing the Falcons, I'm like, the Falcons are going
01:03to find a way to mess this up.
01:04And they didn't.
01:05I thought they did when they missed the two-point conversion to tie it up.
01:07They got the football back, went and scored the touchdown.
01:10I don't know what the inspiration was, but shout-out to the Falcons doing that, and also
01:15shout-out to Bryce Young looking up and finding himself on this Friday with his Carolina Panthers
01:20at 7-6 in the playoffs if it was to end today.
01:24Well, that's the craziest part about it.
01:26The last part that you mentioned that, lo and behold, now, it's the Carolina Panthers
01:31that could emerge as that division leader and go to the playoffs and all of that.
01:35I don't think that's anything that, even if you thought that the Panthers were going to
01:38be better, I don't think anybody had them winning that division this year.
01:42Oh, God, no.
01:42So, yeah, of course not, especially with, you know, with Baker Mayfield and how he was playing
01:46earlier in the year.
01:47But I would say this.
01:48Not only did the Falcons – it wasn't just that the Falcons didn't falcon.
01:53It was that it felt like the Bucs kind of falcon.
01:55Bingo.
01:55You know what I mean?
01:56Bingo.
01:56And so they benefited.
01:59It's like the Bucs beat them at their own game or lost at their own game.
02:04Snatch them.
02:05Defeat from the jaws of victory.
02:07Yeah, 14 in the fourth quarter.
02:08Yeah, man.
02:09And did y'all see the biggest thing that stood out to me watching this game was Mike Evans,
02:14who we are all familiar with.
02:16Horrific human being.
02:17An amazing human being.
02:19I wouldn't say mild mannered, but just a polite and good dude.
02:23He looked livid, like he was ready to kick somebody's ass on that sideline.
02:27Why wouldn't he?
02:28That was a y'all lost performance.
02:30Exactly.
02:30Six receptions, 132 yards.
02:33In his first game back.
02:34Yeah.
02:35And he looked that way rightfully so.
02:38That stood out to me.
02:39It's like you did so bad that you got Mike Evans over here out of his element and justifiably so.
02:46The interesting thing to me about this game – well, a lot, but two of the greatest human beings
02:53in the NFL went completely out of character in this game.
02:57Mike Evans, you just talked about, and Bijan afterward.
03:00Oh, yeah.
03:01Yeah, Bijan afterward.
03:02We were actually talking about that game earlier this week.
03:05Yeah.
03:05He just said the name.
03:07That was odd.
03:07Yes.
03:08What game was it?
03:09Well, D'Amico called it hotball.
03:11Yeah.
03:11Some people have called it smearly, and here is a homophobic slur.
03:15These are two of the greatest people.
03:16Dino man.
03:17You know, you want them to marry your daughter.
03:18Yeah.
03:18You know, and I'm like, wow, both of these guys.
03:21And then talk about losing it.
03:23By the way, I've got to fall on the sword here.
03:25Yesterday, I was sitting right here going, you know, I think Tampa Bay and Mike Evans back.
03:28You know, they might be a little on to something.
03:30I wasn't going to do it.
03:31I wasn't going to do it.
03:32That's so much.
03:33And I went, oh, Lee.
03:35Then there was Todd Bowles postgame.
03:37And I gave Figge a lot of work.
03:39What do you tell them in the locker room?
03:41I forgive them.
03:42It's inexcusable.
03:43You don't make excuses.
03:45You've got to f***ing care enough where the s*** hurts.
03:49You've got to f***ing care enough where the s*** hurts.
03:51It's got to f***ing mean something to you.
03:53It's more than a job.
03:54It's your f***ing livelihood.
03:56How well do you know your job?
03:58How well can you do your job?
03:59You can't sugarcoat that s***.
04:00It was inexcusable.
04:02And there's no f***ing answer for it.
04:04There's no excuse for it.
04:06That's what you tell them in the locker room.
04:08Look in the f***ing mirror.
04:09That's my AI?
04:10Seven F-bomb.
04:11Yes.
04:11I had to double check.
04:12That's my AI, man.
04:13And he's F-bomb right.
04:14Seven.
04:14He's bleeping right.
04:15It was crazy.
04:16Todd Bowles ain't the F-bomb guy.
04:17Right.
04:17That's what I'm saying.
04:18Like, he's not that guy.
04:19And he even went further when he was talking about Baker wanting to take the blame last
04:22night.
04:22He said he could look himself in the mirror and be honest with himself.
04:25If everyone did that, we would figure out our problems real quick.
04:28That dude is calling out the entirety of the team all the way to the quarterback in
04:32a very direct way, which they should.
04:36They've lost five of their last six.
04:37I think they've lost six of their last eight, I believe.
04:40Yeah.
04:41It's been bad.
04:41There are two ways to look at it, though, because he threw everyone under the bus.
04:45And he also said the coaches did their job.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Is it?
04:50Is it?
04:50Yeah.
04:51We kind of get to meet a hard time.
04:53It's on me.
04:54Yeah.
04:54I think other coaches always say, hey, it's on me.
04:57I'm there.
04:57It's on me.
04:58But he did the complete opposite.
05:00So is this like, hey, I got to look out for number one here?
05:04You know?
05:04They've lost all of these games, like Reggie just mentioned.
05:07They falconed against the Falcons.
05:09And now they've allowed.
05:10That's an excuse.
05:11They have enabled the Panthers to win a division, to win a division in the NFL.
05:16And so that just speaks to the opportunity that's in front of you.
05:19All these games, or that was in front of you, all these games that you lost.
05:22This game in front of this national audience against the Falcons, who falcon all the time,
05:27and you did that instead.
05:28Yeah.
05:29And now, like, it's the Panthers that are going to reign supreme in your division?
05:33That is inexcusable.
05:35Yeah.
05:36I think that's absolutely the case.
05:38Can I also, real quick before we move away from this, mention one of the things that was
05:41also very odd, and what was a very odd game, Kyle Pitts becoming the first tight end to
05:47have three touchdowns and over 150 yards in a game since 1996.
05:52That is good for how many?
05:5430 years, basically.
05:57And Kyle Pitts is not the person who I would have called to do that.
06:00Although, like, if you just take Kyle Pitts and you go, player X, with this talent, this
06:04capability, you go, yeah, Kyle Pitts should do it.
06:06Except, Kyle Pitts has been one of the greatest disappointments.
06:09How many people had him on their fantasy bench?
06:12I can imagine.
06:13Well, my underdog account was not happy last night.
06:15I'll put it that way.
06:16Ah, okay.
06:17Look, but Kyle Pitts is one of those examples of when you say a thing and it's true, but,
06:24like, you get more information or new information and that thing is not true, but you still keep
06:27saying the old thing, like, he was a disappointment and it's starting to look pretty much like
06:34what people thought it would look like.
06:35It just took way longer than it was supposed to or way longer than we preferred to the
06:40point to where you thought it was a disappointment and it looked like a disappointment.
06:43Maybe that part is disappointing, but that dude's going to get paid at some point.
06:46Like, somebody's going to pay him a hefty amount of money to play tight end for them.
06:50Yeah.
06:50Yeah.
06:51And I think justifiably so.
06:52And they absolutely should.
06:53But he has the talent, he has the capabilities, although I will say, the touchdown catch that
06:57he had, he made that way harder than it needed to be.
07:00Yeah, but that's how good he is.
07:01Which one?
07:02He's a really good guy.
07:03Well, yes, that's fair, but the final one that ended up taking them to being down two
07:08points at that point, where he is backing up in the end zone, and if he just grabs it
07:12the first time, easy touchdown.
07:14He bobbles it and then we have to do the, did he get the cheek down first before his elbow
07:18hit out of bounds?
07:19It was like, what are we doing here, man?
07:20Just catch the football, brother.
07:21But speaking of the Falcons, since we were on this game, like, what a, so I'm talking
07:25about disappointing.
07:27Uh-huh.
07:27All of the investment that they've put in, their weapons, you've got John Robinson, Kyle
07:32Pitts, Drake London, who didn't play in this game, but just overall, they've actually invested
07:38a lot to their credit.
07:39Terry Fontenot and those guys have invested a lot in that defense, and they're just still
07:43the Falcons.
07:44I know they won this game, but my God.
07:47They still look, they still look like the Falcons until they went and won it.
07:49They did.
07:50It's kind of hilarious, because one of the big Falcons things, and I will leave it here,
07:53I promise, is that they've been trying to, man, we've got to get this defense better.
07:57Specifically, they've got to have better defensive line play.
08:00They've got to be able to generate pressure.
08:01They have that now, and the rest of the defense is back.
08:03It's kind of amazing that they finally did that.
08:05It's like they wished on it with the monkey paw.
08:08They're like, please, give us a good pass rush.
08:11He's like, okay.
08:12All right.
08:12It's going to come with something.
08:13You sure?
