Ukraine's kamikaze drones hit the front line as manpower shortage bites

Recent incursions into NATO territory and manpower shortages faced by the Ukrainian armed forces have accelerated advances in drone technology. No longer just complementary to traditional warfare, they are a necessity on the frontline against Russia – and increasingly on Europe’s eastern flank.

00:00Drones and unmanned technologies are increasingly dominating the battlefield in Ukraine.
00:05Used for air defense, moving blood supplies and deep strikes into enemy territory,
00:10they're particularly critical when the manpower is under pressure on the front line.
00:15The Finnish garrison town of Rihimaki is aiming to lead NATO as a hub for such vital defense innovation.
00:22Rihimaki is a long-established rifle manufacturer and recently created an initiative called Define
00:28that brings together military and private sector technologies to aid or substitute soldiers on the front line in Ukraine.
00:35One of those technologies already in use there, using unmanned vehicles, is ARCS Robotics.
00:42Transport wounded soldiers without harming other soldiers that would have to transport the wounded soldier
00:49or just any sort of reconnaissance and surveillance where you would be able to identify
00:56any enemy activities.
00:59Innovation for new technologies is moving at a fast pace, whether it's drones, whether it's unmanned vehicles,
01:05and they're all critical for the front line in Ukraine and also manning the eastern flank of Europe.
01:11Yet Russia, it appears, is innovating just as fast.
01:14I would say they are in a much better position comparing with NATO because, yeah, if you talk about Russia,
01:21they are at war, right?
01:23They have started war against Ukraine and they are developing technologies much faster comparing with other countries.
01:33Alexander Voitko is operating on the front line in Kherson.
01:37He says drones are highly critical for Ukraine given its short supply of manpower.
01:41Russians are learning all the time, too.
01:46They improve their drones, too.
01:49So it's not dumb enemy.
01:52It's a very smart enemy.
01:53So Russia is a very dangerous enemy and we can't underestimate Russia.
02:02Double Tap Investment CEO has just returned from the front line in Kherson,
02:06where he was testing new technologies with the Ukrainian army.
02:09He says Ukraine is buying time for Europe to build up its defenses.
02:14What's happening, the pressure is horrible.
02:16The kill zone is getting thicker and thicker, meaning that there's no front line, like, you know, like line is here.
02:22And it's like 10 kilometers, 20 kilometers.
02:25We have acoustic sensors out there that alarm the drones.
02:31We have counter tactics, counter measures.
02:33It's not easy, but they're not giving up.
02:36I really appreciate that they're buying us time.
02:39NATO says it's constantly ramping up its testing of new defense technologies to strengthen operational resilience.
