00:00It took Divinyls three little words to captivate the entire world.
00:14In 1991, Divinyls were top of the pops everywhere.
00:19I Touch Myself was one of the year's biggest hits.
00:23It was a crowning moment in one of Oz Rock's most epic journeys.
00:27A journey that began almost a decade earlier when Christina Amplett met Mark McEntee.
00:33Instantly, this gang of two knew their destiny was to become one of the biggest bands on the planet.
00:39What I liked about Mark was that he was wanting to do something and he was very eager.
00:48Mark shared Chrissie's vision of a rock and roll future.
00:51The first time that I heard Chrissie's voice, I just thought it was great.
00:55And from the first time Chrissie and Mark wrote music together, it was magic.
01:04Boys in town immediately splashed Divinyls all over radio and Countdown and straight onto the national top ten.
01:10Divinyls were by now a fully fledged outfit.
01:13With Chrissie up front in her schoolgirl uniform and trademarked pouch, she was sexy and scary.
01:19The impact was immediate, unforgettable.
01:22Australian music had never seen anything like her.
01:25It's not something that I sit down and contrive.
01:27I just get out there and do what I do.
01:29They toured the pubs and clubs across Australia from inner city dives to mining town community hall six nights a week.
01:36The soundtrack to the film Monkey Grip became Divinyls first major release.
01:45And in a radical move for the time, manager Vince Lovegrove secured Divinyls an international recording deal direct with the US based Chrysalis Records.
01:54Their 1983 debut album was the critically acclaimed, raw and edgy, Desperate.
02:05Americans too had never seen or heard anything quite like Chrissie Amplett and the Divinyls quickly built a solid following on the US college circuit.
02:13You have to be good live. You work hard. You go through a whole process.
02:18In the years to come, Divinyls toured intensely, delivering a succession of timeless hits and classic albums.
02:28Their success was driven by one of the most volatile relationships in rock and roll.
02:33You go through different sorts of phases.
02:35What's the phase at the moment?
02:37Pretty well the non-speaking phases.
02:39In late 1990, Divinyls had a new look and the most famous ode to self-love ever penned.
02:50And then the I touch myself phase came and everybody forgot anything else and I became this sexual person.
02:58The self-titled Divinyls album was their watershed.
03:01It found them at the top of the charts and the name on everyone's lips around the world.
03:05Chrissie and Mark changed the boundaries of Australian rock and roll.
03:12In particular, the perception of women in rock.
03:14I see now that individuality of women is expected and it is accepted a lot more than when I was around.
03:23They were one of our most dynamic live acts ever.
03:28And the Divinyls music ended up touching us all.
03:31To the world. To the world. To the world. I'm magic.
03:36Any chance they know who ain't my best.
03:39Any chance they know who ain't my best.
03:45...
03:50I love myself, I want you to love me
03:58When I feel down, I want you above me
04:03I search myself, I want you to find
04:07I forget myself, I want you to remember
04:11I don't fall to anybody else
04:17When I feel the mood, I touch myself
04:21Oh, I don't want anybody else
04:26Oh no, I know, I know
04:29You're the one who makes me go running
04:36You're the sun who makes me shine
04:41When you're a fan, I'm always laughing
04:45I want to make you mine
04:48I close my eyes and see you before me
04:53Think I would die if you were to ignore me
04:58I both could see just how much I adore you
05:03I could tell my mind is I'll do anything for you
05:07I don't want anybody else
05:15When I think of you, I touch myself
05:19Oh, I don't want anybody else
05:24Oh no, oh no, oh no
05:27I love myself
05:46I want you to love me
05:48When I feel down, I want you above me
05:53I search myself
05:55I want you to find
05:57I forget myself
05:59I want you to remember me
06:02Oh, oh
06:03I don't want anybody else
06:10When I think of you, I touch myself
06:14Oh no, I don't want anybody else
06:19When I think of you, I touch myself
06:25Oh no, I don't want anybody else
06:29Oh no, I don't want anybody else
06:31Oh no, I don't want anybody else
06:33Oh no, I don't want anybody else
06:37Yeah, I don't want anybody else
06:45When I think about you, I touch myself
06:49Oh, I don't want anybody else
06:54When I think about you, I touch myself
06:57I touch myself
06:59I touch myself
07:02I touch myself
07:04I touch myself
07:08I touch myself
07:11I touch myself
07:13I honestly do, yeah
07:16Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
07:21Oh
07:23Oh, no
07:31Oh, no
07:32No, no
