00:30Friends to know and ways to grow, a written rainbow. I can be anything. Take a look, it's in a book, a written rainbow, written rainbow.
01:00Well, Luke, we've got a perfect day for a barbecue, don't we? The whole gang will be here. It's going to be great, huh?
01:10Now, I've got my cooking utensils. Ooh, the grill's ready, the coals are nice and hot. Hey, Luke, have you seen my apron?
01:18Ah, there it is. Thanks, Luke. What a good dog. Out, out. Thank you so much, Luke. Luke is a great dog.
01:32Yes, I love you, too. Dogs make wonderful pets, and so do cats. Now, here is a story about a cat who...
01:43I'm sorry, I really need to get that. I'll be right back.
01:49Oh, man, forget about cats, will you? It's dogs that you ought to be barking about.
02:01Now, here's a book that'll really wag your tail. It's called Martha Speaks.
02:11Martha Speaks.
02:13I hope that soup is gone when I come back in there.
02:27The day Helen gave her dog, Martha, alphabet soup, something unusual happened.
02:35The letters in the soup went up to Martha's brain instead of down to her stomach.
02:41That evening, Martha spoke.
02:47Isn't it time for my dinner?
02:50Huh? Huh?
02:52Martha's family had many questions to ask her.
02:55Of course, she had a lot to tell them.
02:59Have you always understood what we were saying?
03:01Oh, you bet.
03:04Well, why don't you come when we call?
03:06Oh, you people are so bossy.
03:09Come, sit, stay.
03:11You never say please.
03:13Do dogs dream?
03:15Day and night.
03:16This morning, I dreamed I was chasing a giant meatloaf.
03:21Alphabet soup became a regular part of Martha's diet.
03:25And the family had a wonderful time.
03:28Surprising people.
03:29They ordered pizza from a different restaurant every night.
03:41How much do I owe you?
03:45They taught Martha how to use the phone.
03:48Pretty soon, more than pizza was being delivered.
03:55But I didn't order any barbecue.
03:58Oh, it's here.
04:01Family and friends were amazed.
04:04Please pass the bones.
04:07Although there were those who doubted.
04:10There is no such thing as a talking dog.
04:15Martha always had the last word.
04:18Speak, Martha.
04:20Woof.
04:22Just kidding.
04:24But there was a problem.
04:26Now that Martha could talk,
04:28she said exactly what was on her mind.
04:31Why is that man so fat?
04:35Mom said that fruitcake you sent wasn't fit for a dog.
04:38But I thought it was delicious.
04:42Who did it?
04:44She did.
04:45No, he did.
04:46Helen did it.
04:48She wondered why her family was mad at her.
04:52But she kept on talking.
04:54Oh, I've seen this program.
04:56You want me to tell you what happens?
04:58The giant reptile did it.
05:00Oh, and the little kitten gets blamed.
05:02But it's okay, because Ninja Woman...
05:04She talked while they were trying to read.
05:06There's a poodle over on Circuit Street I'd really like to play with.
05:10He's small, but, oh, what a dog.
05:12And speaking of small...
05:13She talked and talked.
05:14...in the back alley to a poor but loving mother.
05:17Although she was a mixed breed,
05:18Mama was determined to raise us puppies right.
05:21Blah, blah, blah, blah.
05:22Until her family could not stand it.
05:25And said,
05:26Martha, please shut up!
05:29What's wrong?
05:35You talk too much.
05:37You never stop!
05:39Sometimes I wish you had never learned to talk.
05:43Martha was crushed.
05:47The next day,
05:49Martha just lay quietly beneath the kitchen table.
05:53At first, her family enjoyed the silence.
05:56But after a while,
05:58they became worried.
06:00Helen offered bowl after bowl of alphabet soup.
06:04But Martha had lost her appetite for letters.
06:08Martha's family wondered if she'd ever speak again.
06:14Then one evening,
06:16when her family was out,
06:18Martha heard the sound of glass breaking.
06:22A burglar,
06:24thought Martha.
06:26I better call the police.
06:30She carefully dialed 911.
06:34But when she opened her mouth to speak,
06:38Martha hadn't eaten a bowl of alphabet soup in days.
06:48Martha raced to the kitchen.
06:50She barked.
06:51She growled.
06:54She tried to look ferocious.
06:57The burglar wasn't frightened.
07:00He picked up a pot from the stove.
07:03Uh-oh.
07:03Thought Martha.
07:05It's taps for sure.
07:08But to her surprise,
07:10the burglar put the pot down on the floor in front of her.
07:14Here, doggie.
07:15Have something nice to eat.
07:17The burglar smiled as he closed Martha into the kitchen.
07:22Dumb dog.
07:23Lucky for me,
07:24you like alphabet soup.
07:25When Martha's family returned,
07:29they found the police removing the burglar from their house.
07:34How did you know he was robbing our house?
07:36Asked Kellen.
07:37Uh, we got a call at the station.
07:39Some lady named Martha.
07:42Good dog, Martha!
07:44exclaimed her happy family.
07:46Uh-huh.
07:47You're so right.
07:48Now, Martha eats a bowl of alphabet soup every day.
07:54And sometimes,
07:56she doesn't say anything at all.
08:00At least for a few minutes.
08:02That's so doggone inspiring.
08:11But hey,
08:11you want to see something really cool?
08:13Come on in.
08:14Have a biscuit.
08:16Don't worry,
08:16they're fresh.
08:19Now,
08:20check this out.
08:21We'll see you next time.
08:51We'll see you next time.

11:29We'll see you next time.
11:31We'll see you next time.
11:33We'll see you next time.
11:35We'll see you next time.
11:37All right.
11:38This is Buster.
11:39Buster and I are going to show you some of the dog basics.
11:41Actually some of the basics and some of the more advanced stuff that any good movie dog needs to know before he gets considered for his first part in movies or TV.
11:48So the first thing you need to work your dog is you've got to give him a reason to work.
11:52So what we do is we get a nice little bait bag or a pouch, whatever you want to call it.
11:55We usually use chicken or beef.
11:57And as you can see, it does a very good job of getting their attention.
12:01Look at that.
12:02That's a good boy.
12:03Watch that.
12:04Now when I'm doing this, I'm going to be using a visual cue with my hand and a verbal cue with my mouth.
12:07The reason we use both is because a lot of times when we're working on a movie set, we can't make any noise.
12:12So we have to just use the visual cue.
12:14All right, Buster.
12:15Let's go to work.
12:16Say hello to everybody.
12:17Speak.
12:18Speak.
12:19Speak.
12:20Speak.
12:21Good boy.
12:22Sit up.
12:27Up high.
12:30Very good.
12:31And take a bow.
12:36Very good, Buster.
12:37Good boy.
12:38All right, come on down here.
12:40Let's show him some more advanced stuff.
12:41Good boy.
12:42Very good.
12:43That's a good boy.
12:44That's a good boy.
12:45Come over here.
12:46Stay.
12:47Okay, something comes into the backyard.
12:49It really scares you.
12:50Back up so you can watch it.
12:52Back up.
12:53Back up, Buster.
12:54Good boy.
12:55Back up.
12:56Stay.
12:57But you've stepped on a thorn.
12:58You're wounded.
12:59Show him how bad it hurts.
13:00Come on.
13:01Easy.
13:02Easy.
13:03Good boy.
13:04Easy.
13:05Good boy.
13:06All right.
13:07That's a good boy, Buster.
13:08I'd say it's the most important to have a good relationship with your dog.
13:11Because in order to train your dog, there has to be trust.
13:14There has to be an understanding and kindness and love and affection in order to get the dog
13:18to do the things you want him to do.
13:19Good girl.
13:20That's very good.
13:21Jeez.
13:22Look at that face.
13:23Hi, Perky.
13:24Good girl.
13:25Good.
13:26One of the cutest behaviors I think you see in the movies is having a dog put their feet
13:31up and hide their eyes.
13:33And from a trainer's point of view, it's actually very simple to teach.
13:37Obviously, the first thing you're going to have to teach is the dog to put their feet
13:40up.
13:41So what we're going to do is that to begin with, move back to an area where she can only get
13:44her feet up.
13:45Good girl.
13:46Kind of guide her a little bit.
13:47Give her the piece of food.
13:48That's very good.
13:49That's a good girl.
13:50And once you've done that a few times and she understands what put your feet up is, then
13:54you're going to go to the next step and that's going to be to put your head down.
13:56So what you're going to do is get another piece of food.
13:58Stay.
13:59And you're going to put it between her legs and tell her to put her head down.
14:02Give her the piece of food that's down there and tell her to stay.
14:04Hold it.
14:05Stay.
14:06Stay.
14:07Stay.
14:08Good girl.
14:09That's very good.
14:10Very good.
14:11Good girl.
14:13Good girl.
14:14Now, if you've done that a few times and you feel comfortable that the dog knows both
14:17behaviors, you bring it to somewhere else.
14:19New area.
14:20Stay.
14:21Casey, put your feet up.
14:23Stay.
14:24Hide your eyes.
14:25Stay.
14:26Head all the way down.
14:28Stay.
14:29Okay.
14:30That's a good girl.
14:31Very good.
14:32Good girl.
14:33Very good.
14:34That's a good girl.
14:35Oh my God.
14:36See this?
14:37If you have to have a pet, the dog is the greatest pet you can have because everything
14:43is unconditional.
14:44You can take a dog anywhere.
14:45You can do anything with the dog.
14:46And no matter what happens, he always loves you.
14:50All right.
14:52Well, that pretty much sums it up for me.
14:54Buster, is there anything else you'd like to say before we go, buddy?
14:56All right.
14:57Go on over there and do your thing.
15:00I wonder where Levar is.
15:06He's probably still on the phone.
15:08Well, it's time for my walk.
15:09Come on.
15:10You take me.
15:11I bet you never thought much about it, but here's how the world looks from a dog's eye
15:18view.
15:19Hold on just a second.
15:24I kind of smell these flowers.
15:28Ah.
15:29I really shouldn't be doing this.
15:34It's one surefire way for me to end up in the dog house, but I can't resist.
15:42Hey, Levar.
15:43I thought you were going to give this to me.
15:46There's my friend Phoebe.
15:49Hey, Phoebe.
15:50You know, I really like her, but she's kind of stiff.
15:56You know, some mornings all you feel like is a good sniff in the grass.
16:02Who is this?
16:04Hi.
16:05How are you doing?
16:06I'm sorry.
16:07What did you say?
16:09Oh, ribbit.
16:11I don't speak amphibian.
16:13Boy, a little jumpy, aren't we?
16:15I guess they come on too strong sometimes, huh?
16:18Hi, Luke.
16:28That's my friend Nina.
16:31I just love this kid.
16:37And you know something?
16:39I think she kind of loves me too.
16:41I love you.
16:43She's so cute.
16:45This is the primo hydrant in the whole neighborhood.
16:53And it's mine.
16:54Oh, no.
16:55It's Elaine.
16:56Our annoying neighbor.
16:58I hope she doesn't see me.
17:00La, la, la.
17:01La, la, la.
17:02Look.
17:04Oh, no, no, no, no.
17:06I see you hiding behind that tree.
17:13You come out here right now, my little precious.
17:16Come here.
17:17Come on.
17:18Oh, brother.
17:19Well, what are you going to do?
17:21I can't insult her.
17:23She's a nice person.
17:25I think I'm the only friend she has.
17:27I have a little treat for you.
17:28Come on.
17:29Oh, no.
17:30No, not that.
17:31Not the hell.
17:32I love my little Luke.
17:35Yes.
17:36I love you.
17:37I love you too, Elaine.
17:39I have a treat for you.
17:41You know me.
17:42I'll eat anything.
17:44Yum, yum, yum.
17:45I gotta wonder.
17:46How long has this thing been in her pocket?
17:48My sweet little Luke.
17:50Hey, there's Lynn, our mail carrier.
17:53Hi, Luke.
17:54How are you?
17:55I got some mail here for LaVar.
17:56You gonna take it in?
17:57All right.
17:58Here it goes.
17:59If you thought that was cool, wait till you see what my friends can do.
18:17Take it down.
18:36It's worth a week.
21:10I'm having a burger.
21:11I'm having a burger and I'll read later.
21:13Is that a problem?
21:14Hi, I'm David.
21:16One of the funniest books I ever read is Earth Hounds, as explained by Professor Zargle.
21:24Professor Zargle is an alien.
21:26He's teaching his class about Earth Hounds, what we Earthlings know as dogs.
21:34He says Earth Hounds have tusks in the front and a waggle in the back.
21:41He says Earth Hounds are sneaky.
21:44They eat wiggle meat and the living room rug.
21:48Earthlings love to play games with their Earth Hounds.
21:53I think Professor Zargle's observations were correct.
21:59I also think that Earth Hounds will make you howl with laughter.
22:05Did you ever wonder how it would feel to live a dog's life?
22:10I mean, you can't even sit on the sofa and no treats unless you entertain your owners.
22:16Well, here's a dog who's gotten made in this story called The Night I Followed the Dog.
22:23The boy who tells this story thinks his dog is pretty ordinary.
22:28Then one night, something happens to change the boy's mind.
22:33The dog is in the bathroom, dressing for a nice night out.
22:38You'll never believe what happens next.
22:41The dog owns a club where other dogs can go to hang out.
22:45Being with his dog makes the boy feel like a movie star.
22:49A waitress brings him some biscuits.
22:52Later on, the dog ends up dancing with the glamorous greyhound.
22:58I'm Crystal, and my advice to you is to think twice before you tell your dog to do anything.
23:05As you can see in this book, he may have a lot of other things on his mind.
23:10Hi, my name is Aditi.
23:13Here's a book about a teeny tiny dog named Dolly.
23:17The book is called My Puppy is Born.
23:22When Dolly is born, she is very small.
23:27I just want to squeeze her.
23:30The puppies need their mother at first.
23:33They get milk from her body.
23:36They can't see or hear when they're newborn.
23:40Their eyes won't open until they're a little bigger.
23:44I like the part when Dolly runs all over the place.
23:49I'd love to have a puppy like this.
23:53This is an exciting, colorful book.
23:56It made me want to get a puppy.
23:58Don't miss it.
24:01Aren't we dogs the cutest?
24:03I mean, look at this.
24:04Bones on the wall.
24:05And look at me.
24:06I'm adorable.
24:07You'd like to be like me, wouldn't you?
24:09Come on.
24:10You can admit it.
24:11Just a little.
24:12Woof!
24:13Woof!
24:14Woof!
24:15Woof!
24:16Woof!
24:17Woof!
24:18Woof!
24:19Woof!
24:20Woof!
24:21Woof!
24:22Woof!
24:23Woof!
24:24Woof!
24:25Woof!

24:27Woof!
24:28Woof!

24:38Woof!
24:39Woof!
24:40Woof!

24:57Luke!
24:58Hey, Luke!
24:59Ah, there you are, boy.
25:01Hey, what's this?
25:03Martha Speaks.
25:04Well, that's a pretty good book.
25:05I like this book.
25:07You know, I'll tell you what.
25:08One day, we'll do a show about dogs
25:11and you can host, huh?
25:12How's that?
25:13I bet you'd like that, huh?
25:15Now, where was, ah, the cat book?
25:18I've, that's funny.
25:21I thought I left it here.
25:25What, I wonder what happened to that book?
25:28I'll see you next time.
25:41I'll see you next time.
25:43I'll see you next time.
26:09I can go anywhere
