00:00Only time, money, and the continued desire for answers separate us from the moment of
00:06discovery.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're taking a look at some freakish flukes that occurred
00:12in recent history.
00:13In a way, it kind of like, it sums up the fact that it was over for the photographic
00:19magazine that had been so successful from the 30s onwards.
00:25Flight 666 flew into hell on Friday the 13th.
00:32Airports around the world are represented by three-letter codes.
00:35The code for Helsinki-Vanta Airport, the primary airport of Finland's capital, is HELL.
00:41Finavia, the airport's owner, has had fun with the initials.
00:44In October of 2017, they had a PR campaign, hashtag Life in Hell.
00:50It was a mixed media campaign with TV and online content.
00:54They even had a well-known Chinese actor spend a month living at the airport.
01:01Three days after the launch of the campaign, on Friday the 13th, Finnair's regular flight
01:06666 from Copenhagen flew straight to hell.
01:10There was no bad luck to be found, but what a way to tempt fate.
01:14The story of Shu Weifeng.
01:17Despite a seemingly constant influx of bad news filtering into our media diet, it's important
01:21to remember the world is filled with unsung heroes.
01:25One such hero is Shu Weifeng, a resident of Zhengzhou Province in China.
01:29One day in 2018, Mr. Weifeng happened upon an eight-year-old boy drowning in a river.
01:35Despite being 80 at the time, and having some pre-existing injuries from a fall, Mr. Weifeng
01:40left into action.
01:42He saved the boy, much to his family's relief.
01:44The story would have ended there, but for a truly bizarre bit of random chance, Mr. Weifeng
01:50had saved the boy's father from a nearly identical situation 30 years before.
01:55There is a reason why meteors are incredibly valuable.
02:13Many meteoroids break up in the atmosphere after hurtling through space for millions or
02:17billions of years.
02:18According to National Geographic, the chances of getting hit by a meteor are approximately
02:221 in 1.6 million.
02:25In 2011, one meteoroid fell to Earth and landed on a house in France.
02:29Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
02:37This sort of event was newsworthy thanks to its unlikelihood alone.
02:41However, there is an odd wrinkle to this particular story.
02:44The home was owned by the Comet family.
02:47The beginning and end of life.
02:52Life magazine helped define popular American culture in the 20th century.
03:00It was ubiquitous, on shelves of every magazine stand, waiting room, and grocery checkout in
03:05the country.
03:06The first issue of the magazine as we currently know it was published on November 23, 1936.
03:11The first interior photo in the magazine's history was a picture of a baby being cradled
03:16by his doctor after being delivered.
03:18The caption read, Life Begins.
03:21That baby was George Story, who himself ultimately grew up to become a journalist.
03:26Decades later, on April 4, 2000, Life magazine announced that it would stop publication.
03:32Story died of heart failure a few days later.
03:38A Dutch cyclist and a plane crash dodger.
03:45Martin de Jong is a former professional cyclist from Holland.
03:49His career peaked in 2014, with a first place win in stage four of the Tour of Thailand.
03:54What makes de Jong's life remarkable is not his career.
03:57Instead, he's known for his shockingly good luck.
04:00The same year that de Jong won the aforementioned race, two separate Malaysia Airlines flights crashed.
04:05One, Flight 370, went missing.
04:07The other, Flight 17, was shot down over Ukraine by Russia.
04:11De Jong was allegedly planning to be on both flights.
04:14In the case of Flight 370, he decided to take a flight earlier in the day.
04:19With Flight 17, he ultimately chose a cheaper flight home.
04:22Two Finnish brothers.
04:24They say that twins have an incredibly strong bond, and often know what the other is thinking,
04:29feeling, or doing.
04:30These two Finnish brothers took that bond to a whole other level in 2002, when both died
04:35on the same road, in separate accidents, within hours of each other.
04:40The first brother died when he was hit by a truck while riding his bike.
04:44The second brother died two hours later, under the exact same circumstances, about 1.5 kilometers
04:50from the spot where his brother had been killed earlier.
04:53Stephen Hawking's birthday and death day.
04:56We will discover new structures when look at the universe on smaller and smaller scales.
05:02Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous physicists and cosmologists of the 20th and
05:0621st centuries.
05:07He built on the work of astronomers and mathematicians going all the way back to Galileo.
05:12He deepened our understanding of the Big Bang, black holes, and time.
05:16Coincidentally, Hawking was somewhat famously born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death.
05:23Adding to the creepy and bizarre symmetry, Hawking died on the birthday of Albert Einstein.
05:28It was as if the universe was determined to inextricably link three men responsible for
05:33our understanding of the cosmos.
05:35Does that mean that there is a universe out there where I am smarter than you?
05:40Yes, and also a universe where you're funny.
05:44The Double Survivor.
05:46September 11th, 2001 was the worst terrorist attack on US soil.
05:50There are many stories from survivors about how fickle twists of fate saved their lives.
06:00One such person was a man named Matthew, who came face to face with fate not once, but twice
06:06in his life.
06:07Matthew was passing the Twin Towers at the time, on his way to a business meeting.
06:12Fourteen years later, Matthew was in Paris, enjoying a show at the Bataclan Theatre.
06:18Once entered the club, shooting dozens upon dozens of the concert goers.
06:22Matthew was one of those shot, though he survived by slowly crawling to safety.
06:27It's hard to gauge the quality of Matthew's luck, having barely survived two separate terrorist attacks.
06:33This is an attack not just on Paris, it's an attack not just on the people of France,
06:40but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.
06:45The My Way Killings.
06:47And now, the end is near.
06:53The Philippines saw a truly bizarre series of violent incidents between 2000 and 2012.
06:59Though they were seemingly unconnected, there was one through line.
07:03They were all responses to karaoke performances of Frank Sinatra's song, My Way.
07:08These incidents often occurred in bars and karaoke clubs, where patrons would sing the song,
07:18provoking assaults and murders.
07:21The reasons behind the violent reactions are varied.
07:24Some were disputes over off-key renditions.
07:27One theory is that the song's lyrics lend themselves to perceived arrogance by the singers.
07:39Whatever the reason, many karaoke bars in the Philippines removed My Way from their song lists.
07:44By the end of the phenomena, at least six people had been killed.

08:0427 Club.
08:06The 27 Club refers to a group of famous people, mainly musicians, who have died at the age of 27.
08:12It started in the late 60s when Rolling Stone, Brian Jones, Doors frontman Jim Morrison,
08:18Janice Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, all died at this age. Two and a half decades later,
08:24Kurt Cobain took his life at 27. And recently, Amy Winehouse died from substance use disorder
08:30issues at the age of 27. Winehouse actually stated years earlier that she was worried about dying at
08:3527. All in all, the club has claimed over 60 artists, musicians and actors since the start of the 20th
08:42century. Amy's blood alcohol level was four to five times higher than the drink driving limits.
08:47Maybe a combination of her eating disorders and the alcohol just made her heart stop.
