Thomas Rhett ACMS 2019
Transcript
00:00Hello, what's happening? Y'all doing good.
00:05Over here, it's Thomas. Thomas.
00:07Hey, what's up?
00:08Hi, so you have always thought that you were never going to win, and you're always sort of your biggest doubter.
00:15Doubting Thomas, that's a bad thing.
00:18Well, I mean, just talk about the fact that, I mean, you give yourself less credit than evidently a lot of other people do,
00:24and just what it meant to win. Did you have a conversation with your wife like you did last time?
00:28This is not going to happen. I'm not winning. I'll just sit here.
00:31Literally three hours ago, yes. We were sitting in our hotel room going,
00:34we never go into award shows assuming you're expecting anything.
00:37We're just glad to be there, glad to be nominated, and I was just looking at that card that they gave me,
00:41just looking at those names in that category.
00:44I said this up there. Actually, I don't know what I said. I think I've rambled a lot.
00:48But all those people in that category, man, are truly like my best friends,
00:51and I listen to their music, and we hang out on Monday and Tuesdays, and those are our weekends.
00:56And the fact that their music has shaped who I am, and I've took a lot of things from them,
01:02and gone, gosh, I love that. Can we each other do something for me in that vein?
01:06And it's just really, really such an honor to win that award.
01:09So, thanks.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Congratulations.
01:12Laurentian with CMTV.com.
01:15Has someone who has been nominated in the past, like, in his team,
01:19other athletes since your debut, do the successes like tonight make you want more,
01:25and how do they have an effect on what, you know, how you define success?
01:30And what does it mean for your fans?
01:31Okay, I heard like a third of that question, but I'm going to be able to answer that.
01:35Yeah, that's okay.
01:36How does this, how do successes like tonight, like, make you want more,
01:41and how does that affect your definition of what success is?
01:45Yeah.
01:46You know, I've told a couple people this, and this might be way too deep of a comment for this,
01:51but I've never felt, like, when I turned a different age, I've never felt like I changed at all.
01:57And, like, 20 to 21 was a big shift because you can't drink, and then you can.
02:00Like, that was, like, a big shift.
02:0228 to 29 to me has been a gigantic shift, and I think the way that I define success at 29
02:06is so much different than I defined it at 25.
02:09And I think probably having kids and, you know, having a wife that I love so much
02:14has really just kind of put a lot of things into perspective.
02:16And so I really just try to live every day in the present.
02:19Being present this year is my, like, New Year's resolution
02:21and not trying to think what's going to happen in five years from now.
02:24But, you know, success for me is just always writing better songs
02:28and always playing better shows and, you know, always trying to be the best dude that I can.
02:33So, yeah.
02:35Hi, Don.
02:36Hello.
02:37So I feel like each album, you're sort of expanding your sound
02:41and not only the songwriters you're working with, you know,
02:45but the other artists you're working with.
02:46Yeah.
02:47I mean, can you talk about what this next chapter is going to look like
02:51and where you want to take it?
02:52Yes.
02:53Our album, Center Point Road, comes out May 31st.
02:56And I have a couple really cool collabs on there.
02:58Little Big Town's on there.
02:59Kelsey Ballerini's on there.
03:00John Hardy's on there.
03:03And Center Point Road is a street that I grew up on 20 minutes north of Nashville
03:06in a town called Hendersonville.
03:08And so much of the songs on this album really were shaped from just past experiences
03:12of being in high school and in college and being young and successes and failures
03:16and all the firsts and all the disasters in your life.
03:19I think I got to pull a lot of inspiration from that.
03:21So on this record, I kind of went a little more rootsy
03:24and just very, very, very nostalgic on this record.
03:28So I think that we're going to really enjoy it.
03:30Yeah.
03:31Yes, ma'am.
03:32Hi, Tom.
03:32This is Michaela from SMT.
03:34So how does a win like this, going off from Center Point Road,
03:37coming out soon and having so much success on Life Changes,
03:40how does this win tonight give you confidence?
03:42You're going to get into that album once.
03:44It just gave me affirmation, honestly.
03:46It was just really cool going into an award show.
03:48knowing that you're nominated, first of all.
03:49And I know that I say this all the time, and it's the most cliche comment ever,
03:52but truly just to be nominated is a dream come true.
03:56And so, you know, going forward, I hope that people watching the show tonight
03:59who hadn't bought a ticket to the show buy a ticket to the show
04:02and want to hear more of our music and really just find out more about who I am as a person
04:07and who we are as a family.
04:08And it was just a big win for the home team tonight for us.
04:12Hey.
04:13Congratulations, first of all.
04:16Thank you, Matt.
04:17It is probably too little, but I wonder, will Willow watch the show?
04:20Does she perceive this at all?
04:21And, like, when do you take the award home?
04:24Will you take the award home and show it to her, and what will you tell her?
04:26Yeah, I've got like 100 missed.
04:27I haven't checked 100 of my text messages right now after that,
04:30but I'm assuming my kids did get to watch it.
04:32I hope.
04:33They should be in bed, but if they're staying with my grandparents,
04:35they're definitely not asleep yet.
04:36So it'll be really cool to go home.
04:39Literally, we were in Australia the last month playing some shows,
04:42and I just got done doing soundcheck, and Willow gets out of the car,
04:46and she's like, Daddy, I'm so proud of you.
04:48And I was just like, first of all, how do you know how to say that?
04:51Second of all, it just melted me.
04:53And so it's been really awesome to share some of these moments with my kids
04:56the way that I got to share some of these moments with my dad as well.
04:59It kind of feels like it's coming full circle in a way.
05:01So I do this for them, man.
05:03I write songs for them, and it'll be really cool to show them this trophy
05:08when it comes in the mail, probably in six months.
05:13Thank you all.
05:13Appreciate it.
