00:00The End
00:30Next Sunday, Pastor Miller, honest?
00:43Yes, Davy.
00:44Your father and mother and I agree that you're ready.
00:47And Pastor's coming tonight to talk with us some more about it.
00:50Hi.
00:53Hi.
00:53Guess what?
00:54I know what.
00:56Pastor says I'm ready, too.
00:58Hey, that's great.
01:00You and me and our families all together.
01:02Hi, Cisco.
01:03Davy and I are going to communion next Sunday.
01:06Big deal.
01:07What's the matter?
01:08Who wants to take communion?
01:10Everybody does.
01:12Yeah.
01:13Who says so?
01:14Everybody.
01:15Well, everybody in church.
01:18I'm going with my parents.
01:19Me, too.
01:20Well, have fun.
01:22But don't look for me.
01:23I don't want to take communion.
01:26Anyhow, I haven't got any parents.
01:28You've got your grandmother.
01:30Come with her.
01:31You know she's sick in bed most of the time.
01:34See you around, fellows.
01:38And as we're given the bread and the wine, we hear the words of Jesus,
01:42Take and eat.
01:43This is my body.
01:44Take and drink.
01:45This is my blood.
01:46This helps us remember that God is always giving us his love.
01:50Davy, it always seems to me that communion is God's love reaching through to me and my love reaching through to him.
01:56What does that mean?
01:58It means that Jesus shows us how much God loves us, that God forgives us, even when we misunderstand him or turn against his love.
02:08And it means that he strengthens our ability to love him and to love each other.
02:13Does that help you understand what we're talking about?
02:15I think so.
02:17God loves and we love.
02:19That sure is hard stuff to figure out.
02:22It's hard now, Sally, but it'll grow easier as you grow older.
02:26Then you'll be communing with all of us.
02:28Any more questions, Davy?
02:30Uh, what's the wine taste like?
02:33And does the bread taste like real bread?
02:36Good questions.
02:37We'll arrange for you to find out before Sunday.
02:40Pastor, I'm glad Davy will be celebrating communion with us.
02:43I'll be glad when Sally can, too.
02:45Sharing the Lord's Supper is a joy for all of God's family.
02:49Yeah.
02:49If you have a family.
02:51What, Davy?
02:52Never mind.
02:54I was just thinking of something else.
02:58I even had a dream about Cisco last night.
03:01Yeah.
03:01He sure doesn't care much about communion.
03:04I guess I wouldn't care much, either.
03:06Wish we could do something for him.
03:08Yeah, only what?
03:10I don't know, but we ought to try.
03:12You think he wants us to?
03:14No, but let's try, anyhow.
03:17Listen, come on over.
03:18We'll go see Cisco, and on the way, we'll figure out something.
03:22Okay.
03:23See ya.
03:24Davy, do I have to be nice to that talking bird of Cisco's?
03:29Yeah.
03:29Yes, sir, I remember the very first time I took communion.
03:36All my aunts and uncles came to the service.
03:39Officer Dan, do you remember, too?
03:42You bet.
03:42And you won't forget, either.
03:44What do you remember best?
03:46How fine it was to be up there with a whole congregation.
03:49Davey, I called Cisco.
03:52He's home.
03:53Be right down.
03:57We didn't think of a thing.
04:00Keep thinking.
04:02I'm thinking, too, Davy.
04:06Hi.
04:07There's a ball game on the ticket lot.
04:09Come on in while I get my glove.
04:11Let's go.
04:12Let's go.
04:12Let's go.
04:13Here.
04:14Hold Jojo.
04:15Jojo.
04:16Jojo.
04:21Grandma, did I leave my ball glove in here?
04:24I do not know, Francisco.
04:26You will look under the bed, and it will maybe bite you.
04:29No plan at all.
04:30We better not even talk about communion.
04:33Communion?
04:33Who needs it?
04:35Davy, did you hear what that bird said?
04:39Jojo learned that from Cisco.
04:41It's Cisco talking.
04:42Shows how bad Cisco really feels.
04:45Davy, you be nice to Cisco.
04:47I'll try to be nice to this kooky bird.
04:51Ruff, ruff.
04:53Hey.
04:55Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
04:56What's he doing?
04:58I think he's trying to be nice to you.
05:00Feed me lettuce.
05:02Myech.
05:04Communion?
05:04Who needs it?
05:05He said that again.
05:07I know he said it again.
05:09Relax.
05:10Cisco taught him that, but I don't think he really means it.
05:13I don't either.
05:15Davy, you know I can't stand lettuce.
05:19Jojo wants to be friends and share his food.
05:21If he really wants to be friends, he could go out and find a big juicy bone.
05:27I got a hunch I'll hit a home run today.
05:31Watch us beat the Tigers.
05:33Come on, let's go.
05:34Let's go.
05:35Let's go.
05:38We had a great game, Pops.
05:41Who hit home runs?
05:42Not me.
05:43Not me.
05:44Not me.
05:45Not me.
05:47Not me.
05:47Your side won anyhow, huh?
05:50Uh-uh.
05:51The Tigers won.
05:52Then what are you kids so happy about?
05:54We had fun.
05:55And we've got enough money for three hot dogs.
05:58Three hot dogs coming up.
05:59Only three?
06:02Sorry, Goliath.
06:03Wait a sec.
06:04We share.
06:05Each give him a piece.
06:07Yeah.
06:08And Jojo loves the crumbs.
06:10One for all?
06:11All for one.
06:12We eat together.
06:14Davy, is that like communion?
06:16No.
06:18Well, maybe.
06:20Because it's sharing.
06:23I got to phone my grandma.
06:25See if she's okay.
06:26Be right back.
06:27Grandma!
06:28Grandma!
06:28We're a mess.
06:30What do we do?
06:31Played ball?
06:32Ate a hot dog?
06:33Didn't do one thing about communion.
06:36We didn't know what to do.
06:38Davy, is communion just sharing?
06:40Uh-uh.
06:41It's a lot of other things, too.
06:43Like what?
06:44It's, well, it's people together and liking it.
06:47It's, uh, Johnny, what else?
06:51Uh, being thankful for what God does for us.
06:54That means things like Jesus dying on the cross.
06:57And God raising him back to life on Easter.
07:00And pastor says eating together like that makes you think of Jesus at the Last Supper with his family of disciples.
07:06Don't bring up families.
07:08Sisko will be back.
07:09Davy?
07:10Now what?
07:11You just have to help Sisko get some more family.
07:15How do we do that, genius?
07:17I know how.
07:18What's Goliath talking about?
07:20Just making things up.
07:21You talk all that big talk about sharing, so share.
07:25Share your family.
07:27Just because I share a hot dog doesn't mean I share my family?
07:32That's what he's saying?
07:34Hey, wait a minute.
07:37Maybe that's it.
07:39It is it.
07:41What's it?
07:42We've got a great idea.
07:44We'll all be together.
07:45Where?
07:46What?
07:46We're going to get you some more family.
07:50What for?
07:51So you'll feel better about going to communion.
07:53So you'll be with someone you know.
07:55I told you before.
07:57Communion's not for me.
07:59Who needs it?
08:00We all do.
08:02So you can share my parents.
08:04Listen.
08:05Get smart.
08:06Old people don't want us kids taking communion anyhow.
08:09Sure they do.
08:11At least most of them do.
08:13They just let kids do it because the church says they should.
08:16Big deal.
08:17Big deal.
08:18Big deal.
08:19Big deal.
08:20Davey, could I bite that bird just a little bit?
08:24Aw, come on, Cisco.
08:26Thanks for nothing.
08:28I've got to go home.
08:29Hi, Davey.
08:36Grab a rag.
08:37Hi.
08:38Problems?
08:38Kind of.
08:39Here, catch.
08:41Ah.
08:43Watch me polish.
08:49Why do we have to go to communion with our families?
08:52No one has to, Davey.
08:54It's just that when something means so much to us,
08:56we want to share it with people we love.
08:58You see, each family is part of God's larger family.
09:02Yeah, but suppose I didn't have a family.
09:05But you do.
09:06All right, let's suppose.
09:08Why, then we'd hope some family in church would adopt you.
09:11You mean change my name?
09:13No, your father means they'd be a special family that cared about you.
09:17That sounds great, but it doesn't work.
09:19I just tried to give you both to Cisco as a special family.
09:24He didn't want you or any older people.
09:27Well, I'm not surprised.
09:28You're not?
09:29I think you put your finger on the reason.
09:32Cisco doesn't think grown-ups want him, and I don't blame him.
09:35I'm afraid not one of us has done a thing to show we care about him.
09:38We certainly haven't.
09:40Your finger points straight at us, Davey.
09:43You and Johnny bring him along to church, and that's where it stops.
09:45Hi, Cisco.
09:48Hi.
09:50Dad, don't say anything.
09:52He just gets mad.
09:54It's too late for talk.
09:55Now it's what we do.
09:57Well, here's another polisher.
09:59You're just what we need, Cisco.
10:01I'm great at polishing.
10:04That looks like a pretty good family to me.
10:09So you see, Cisco has more problems than we realized.
10:13Yes, and I'm calling Mrs. Martinez to see if I can lend a hand.
10:16Hello?
10:17Hello, Mrs. Martinez.
10:23It's Elaine Hanson.
10:24Elaine.
10:26John tells me you're probably tired of eating eggs and beans.
10:29A little, yes.
10:30But my Francisco is a good helper.
10:33I know he is.
10:35But I think you both need a rest.
10:37May I come over tonight and cook your supper?
10:38Oh, it is a beautiful idea.
10:41And I have one also.
10:43My grandson has just come in.
10:46I will send him back to the store for good things you will cook.
10:49And you will please bring all of your family so we will eat together.
10:53Wow.
10:54No beans tonight.
10:55No beans.
10:56No beans.
10:57No beans.
11:00And our own boy had to show us what we should do.
11:03I also learned much from my Francisco.
11:05So Elaine and I want very much to be stand-in parents for Cisco, if it's all right with you.
11:11I think it is wonderful.
11:14I do all I can to teach my Francisco about communion, but I cannot go with him.
11:19It is a great sadness.
11:21But to go with you is for him to decide.
11:25We will ask when they finish the dishes.
11:27We're finished.
11:28Ask what?
11:29Cisco, will you let Mr. Hanson and me be your special parents at communion?
11:34Communion is no...
11:35Well, Cisco, what do you say?
11:43Jojo and I say thank you.
11:46Wow.
11:46It's like having a new brother.
11:49New brother.
11:50New brother.
11:51New what?
11:52Well, now you know what the wine tastes like.
11:58Yeah.
11:59Uh-huh.
12:00In Jesus' time, almost everyone drank wine.
12:03It was the common drink.
12:04So for his meal, Jesus used the everyday drink and everyday food, like bread.
12:09Yes, he did.
12:11And he wants to give the wine and bread to his family, even us kids.
12:16Yes.
12:17You see, a family has people of all ages.
12:20And the whole church is God's family.
12:22Is that why older people and kids should like to take communion together?
12:26Exactly.
12:27They care about each other and want to help each other.
12:30And Cisco, I want you to know I'm proud of the way you take care of your grandmother.
12:35Well, I...
12:35I love her.
12:37And love is what communion is all about.
12:40Love is kind.
12:41Love is thoughtful.
12:42Love is even forgiving when others hurt us.
12:44I get it.
12:46Like God forgives us when we hurt him.
12:49Pastor, will Jesus really be with us at communion?
12:53Yes, in a wonderful way, Davy.
12:56Jesus is right there with us, giving us himself.
12:59As Jesus shares his love with us, he helps us share our love with others.
13:03Do you understand that?
13:05I understand pretty good.
13:07As time goes on, you'll both understand more.
13:10Maybe that's what our Lord intended.
13:11So that all of us keep on growing in our understanding and in our love.
13:16Sons of God, hear his holy word.
13:22Gather round the table of the Lord.
13:25Feed his body, drink his blood.
13:29And we'll sing a song of love.
13:32Allelu, allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.
13:36Brothers, sisters, we are one.
13:41Brothers, sisters, we are one.
13:43And our life has just begun.
13:46In the spirit, we are young.
13:49We can live forever.
13:53Sons of God, hear his holy word.
13:56Gather round the table of the Lord.
14:00Eat his body, drink his blood.
14:03And we'll sing a song of love.
14:06Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.
14:11And we'll sing a song of love.
