01:58number 10 the role first went to denise crosby before filming began on star trek the next
02:02generation the producers were set on casting denise crosby in the role of deanna troy and at
02:07the same time marina syrtis was reading for the part of masha hernandez who later became natasha
02:12yar crosby admitted that she had difficulties with her fit for the role not quite grasping as she
02:17once stated the gobbledygook and weird concept of a betazoid it was gene roddenberry who eventually
02:21swapped the roles it was decided that syrtis was a better fit for the part of the empathic troy
02:25in crosby's words citing roddenberry however she the actress was just this kind of american golden
02:31girl compared to the more exotic otherworldly element that was wanted for troy in any case
02:36the switch happened not a moment too soon when syrtis got the call confirming she got the part
02:39her us visa was due to expire that very day the actress was packing her bags a little dejected for
02:45a return to her hometown of london thankfully the rest is history had roddenberry not changed things
02:50perhaps troy and not yar would have met her end at the hands gloopy pseudo appendages of the grumpy old
02:56prank bait armus number nine character constructs not a total recall what you may not know is that
03:02the character of troy first took reference from prior trek and ilea in particular from the motion
03:07picture think deltons and beta zoids and their mental capabilities the latter was already a carry
03:13over from the abandoned project star trek phase two ilea's relationship with will decker was then
03:18the model to build that between troy and riker both marina syrtis and denise crosby also originally
03:23considered troy to be spock like the character description for troy in the tngc's bible does
03:29make passing reference to spock but this is merely to flesh out the counsellor's telepathic abilities
03:33troy was ultimately meant to be her own person her role nonetheless second in importance only to the
03:39captain and first officer according to the series bible once more there seems to be some confusion
03:43surrounding the original intent for the character however between conflicting descriptions of roddenberry
03:48calling troy both the brain on the show and sexy and not very bright it is difficult to know what
03:53to think apparently roddenberry initially wanted troy to have three or even four depending on the
03:57source breasts before dc fontana thankfully convinced him otherwise syrtis would later note that
04:03with the costume changes of season one when troy got cleavage she lost her brain matter then only
04:09really gained some back when she regained the uniform number eight she nearly didn't make it past
04:14season one of tng given the pandemonium behind the scenes it is a wonder anyone made it past the first
04:20season of tng we all know what happened to natasha yard denise crosby and dr crusher gates mcfadden
04:25what you probably didn't know however is that it was troy who was originally on the chopping block
04:29several fairly significant changes had already been made to the character between the pilot and the
04:33rest of the season the extent of troy's powers was reduced with regards to her telepathic capabilities
04:38and she also changed outfit and hairstyle no longer was she dressed in that god-awful cosmic
04:43cheerleader uniform with the ugliest go-go boots ever designed as marina syrtis herself famously
04:48described it the writers struggled with the character and empathic abilities according to
04:52syrtis she was often simply written out of scenes where troy's presence could have been problematic
04:56for the plot as captain jimmy once said what i wouldn't give for a betazoid right now this led
05:00the writers to consider nixing the character before the end of the first season it was only with the
05:05departure of crosby and mcfadden from the show that troy was given leave to remain syrtis found this out
05:10straight from the horse's mouth at jonathan frakes's wedding during the break between seasons when gene
05:15roddenberry approached her to announce that the first episode of season two would focus on troy
05:20number seven marina syrtis hated all that chocolate in tng at least troy seemed to accumulate a lot of
05:26serious and dark scenes some of which we've already discussed she loses her empathic powers is rapidly
05:31aged by a malicious alien ambassador has her body taken over by a criminal imposter is transformed into
05:36an amphibian must do the acting job of her life aboard romulan starship and that's not to mention having to
05:41negotiate the difficult relationship she has with her mother of course her role as counselor requires
05:45her to be more earnest than most but there are lighter moments for troy one now famous example is
05:50her adoration and borderline addiction to chocolate well it is a galaxy class starship sorry in the
05:57episode the game reicher finds troy tucking into a bowl of chocolate upon chocolate upon chocolate she
06:02proceeds to explain to him in the minutest of detail the fine art of the confectionary's consumption
06:07remember it's the whole experience what you may not know however is far from never having met a
06:12chocolate she didn't like was that marina syrtis hated having to eat it contrary to the popular
06:17belief the actress does like chocolate but eating that much take after take would be too much for
06:22anybody apparently she would ask the crew to use a type of chocolate she didn't like and then she
06:26would spit out what she ate into a bucket number six her changing accent has an origin story the
06:31original casting call for troy not without a few uncomfortable of the time aftertastes and cliches
06:36in all its pan-european vagueness states that diana is probably foreign anywhere from italian greek
06:42hungarian russian icelandic etc with looks and accent to match marina syrtis who was born in london
06:48east and then moved north to greek parents is fluent in greek is skilled at accents and was tasked
06:53at creating a betazoid one for troy she opted for a mixture of eastern european and what she drew from
06:59the accent of an israeli friend problem with this is that when we met troy's betazoid mother
07:04loxana she sounded for want of a more precise description american syrtis was then told that
07:09diana got her accent from her father but when we meet him he also sounds generic american the actor
07:15hails from texas so that didn't fit either understandably a bit frustrated syrtis eventually
07:19just switched to something more mid-atlantic as the series and films progressed at times closer to her
07:24native north london and at other times more american the actress stated that if she could change one
07:29thing about her time on tng i wouldn't give diana a foreign accent even though her mother is a betazoid
07:35number five she might have married riker in season seven of tng all good things must come to an end
07:41naked on beta set or it could very well have turned out this way before the series finale in the actual
07:46season seven we got to see a relationship between troy and warf but was all a bit weird and never really
07:51went anywhere as warf was transferred to deep space nine the two were married with kids in a parallel
07:55universe that prime warf stumbles into and troy even killed warf in an empathic hallucination that
08:00mirrored events which took place when the enterprise d was under construction in an interview marina
08:04syrtis shared her views on the relationship i didn't like the fact that he totally became
08:08un-klingon like when he was with troy i liked better the relationship he had with dax over on deep
08:12space 9. furthermore she felt that troy reicher made a much better couple and i think we can all agree
08:18with that in fact the idea of the pair tying the knot in tng's final season was popular among the
08:22writers until producers rick berman and michael piller phased the suggestion down in flames
08:26perhaps reicher wasn't emotionally ready enough to be parted with his beard at that stage to paraphrase
08:31the beatles all you need is metaphasic radiation number four marina syrtis was directed by jonathan
08:37frakes in an episode of the orville seth mcfarland's the orville is a great piece of science fiction in
08:42its own right season four anyone please mcfarland makes no secret of his love for star trek as a source
08:47of inspiration he even appeared in enterprise and there was that hilarious episode of family guy when the next
08:51generation cast these aren't star trek questions what the hell many veteran star trek writers and
08:56producers such as brana braga joe monoski and david a goodman have worked on the orville and
09:00jonathan frakes has called his show star trek with comedy marina syrtis appeared in the orville
09:05second season episode sanctuary in the role of a shipboard school teacher directed by jonathan
09:09frakes it was hard not to see a bit of tng reunion for the pair or even for the quasi return of troy
09:15in a different guise syrtis said of the experience just being on the orville everything looks like
09:20the next generation it was almost like stepping back in time with jonathan directing frakes has
09:24also likened to the directing style of the orville to that of the tng in this standout episode of the
09:28program the parallels are evident and syrtis as school teacher plays a counseling role to the young
09:33machlan topa and parents bortus and clyden number three we don't know much about picard season three
09:39but troy will be in it a lot now morning these are very possible spoilers ahead troy was often sidelined
09:46in the next generation as the captain they're hiding something character worse in the films
09:50syrtis was relegated to an almost bit part role the actress has admitted that she was often decorative
09:55was ultimately fine with that wishing nonetheless that she had suggested more storylines particularly
10:00between other women for troy to the writers in an interview for the blu-ray release of the films
10:04syrtis also laments that she tried and failed to make troy funny during tng's run to the point where
10:10she even asked her agent only to find her dramatic roles after the series end fortunately she was
10:15delighted with the now legendary drunk scene in first contact and changed her mind about doing
10:20comedy what can we say with a limited amount of information that we have is that troy will be a
10:24big part to play in the third and final season of star trek picard in the words of syrtis herself
10:28during a red carpet news interview we are in it we are in it a lot the actress has also stated that
10:33having felt discarded by nemesis the cast was cherished on picard and whilst executive producer terry
10:38metallis has ominously warned us that the safety of the characters is not guaranteed in season three
10:44syrtis said she would gladly return to the role in another spin-off death of a character is certainly
10:48no hindrance in any case especially with the multiple time periods of the shows and temporal
10:52investigations has just arrived number two marina syrtis had a few mishaps on set the character of
10:59deanna troy was accustomed to witnessing disaster destruction and injury after all she did under orders
11:04fly the enterprise e at full impulse into the scimitar she also unexpectedly found herself in
11:08command in an episode quite literally called disaster the woman behind the role marina syrtis
11:13equally had a couple of noteworthy accidents on set which you might not be aware of one on-set
11:18mishap befell syrtis during the filming of generations during the battle scene with the
11:21klingons consoles were blowing up left and right when troy goes to replace an injured officer at the
11:25con syrtis actually sat on a piece of degree from the explosions and burnt her bottom thankfully she
11:30wasn't badly hurt another such incident occurred during the filming of the next generation episode
11:34power play in a scene on the surface of the planet o'brien ryker data and troy are thrown violently
11:39backwards by an em discharge just before they can be beamed back onto the ship whilst the other three
11:44actors had stunt doubles perform this for them syrtis wanted to do the stunt herself with the
11:48encouragement of the director she committed to it so much that when she landed on her back she damaged
11:51her coccyx and was in pain for months fair play to her couple of rounds of frere jacca won't make you
11:56forget that number one she has appeared in five series four films and on a stamp one of the most prolific
12:03characters of the franchise marina syrtis starred as troy in the next generation and has appeared in
12:07voyager lower decks picard and enterprise whatever your thoughts on that last one that still counts
12:12she is beaten only by jonathan frakes as reicher in that regard who also appeared in the episode
12:17defiant of ds9 syrtis is the only woman to appear as the same character in as many series however she is
12:23among great company as one of only six actors to appear in two series finales we'll let you figure that
12:29one out for yourselves troy was of course in each of the tng movies a recent highlight aside from
12:35picard are her appearances in lower decks where she is often the foil for the bombastic ryker what you
12:41may also not know unless you are already a fabulously fedelious fellatist is that deanna troy is one of
12:47the 18 characters including the likes of janeway kirk picard cisco archer spock reed burnham to have been
12:54commemorated on a set of uk first class postage stamps in november 2020 as a celebration of star trek
13:01you'd be mad to post them of course but it would make for some epic snail mail that's everything
