00:00Australia is in the midst of the biggest housing crisis we've ever had.
00:07We need to build homes faster and more efficiently for all budgets and all Australians.
00:14And that's exactly what Future House is all about.
00:21Our mission is to build three houses for three families in just three months.
00:27For three different budgets using three different modern methods of construction.
00:34Now we may not solve Australia's housing crisis, but we're going to give this a red hot guy.
00:43Previously, we met our three brave families who are joining us on this mission.
00:48The Fox family in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales are building two modular homes.
00:54Me and Helen are in the process of separating, so we want separate houses.
00:59But we still want it to be close to where our daughter is.
01:03The Quachini family from Canberra are building a precast concrete home.
01:08We have two beautiful children and a third one on the way.
01:11Unbelievable, at the same time we're building a house.
01:15And us, the Juries, in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, are building a 3D concrete printed home.
01:23I'm having heart palpitations just thinking about it.
01:29I didn't know it was coming today, no.
01:31Hey!
01:32You just knocked my side!
01:34But as you can imagine, three houses in three months?
01:37The system is ridiculous.
01:39Well, it's never going to be easy.
01:45Well, there's no turning back now.
01:50Tonight, the Fox family get off to a flying star.
01:53These are your two houses.
01:55Wow.
01:56But it's not all smooth sailing.
01:59It's kind of emotional still.
02:01After months of red tape and frustration, it's Geronimo at Sean's house.
02:07And builder love goes to a whole new level.
02:10I love you.
02:11Oh, I love you too, buddy.
02:13And my first look at my dream 3D printed home.
02:16This looks incredible, mate.
02:18Look at the tree, look at the tree.
02:20Blows my mind.
02:21Before it's back to the drawing board.
02:23No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:26Hey, hey, hey, hey.
02:28Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
02:32Off he goes.
02:37Our farm in the Northern Rivers is our little piece of paradise.
02:42But right now, it's a demolition site.
02:45my mate Dazza is finishing off taking down the old caretaker's cottage
02:59so we can build a new 3D printed concrete house in its place
03:04I can't wait to get started
03:07but first we need to salvage everything that's worth saving
03:12yes save it that's good
03:14I need long pieces long all the hardwood
03:20and there's always some gold nuggets to be found amongst the rust
03:26after the cottage came down I thought well I'm going to salvage all of that beautiful hardwood
03:32because it was at least 70 years old and it's in perfect condition
03:37and hopefully we're going to find ways to reuse that in the new building
03:42okay that's a beauty
03:50well these are going to become the jams the door jams
03:54for all the new windows and doors
03:56so that gets fixed up against the 3D printed wall
03:59and then inside here is where the new windows get fixed in
04:03and then your architraves go on the outside
04:06amazing
04:07yeah we save all this beautiful wood
04:09great job
04:10but these beautiful old beams aren't the only thing we're saving
04:15all the concrete timber and steel in this old shed will live to build another day
04:23so now that we're here
04:33we can orientate the house like that
04:35we'll get beautiful northern light straight into the front of the house
04:38I think dreaming up your vision at the start is always the favorite process
04:43talking about your hopes and dreams and
04:46how you see yourself living on the land
04:49and then coming up here every time to site
04:52and we all seem to decompress a little bit and relax
04:55but now all of a sudden it's a build site
04:58and the stress seems to have followed us to our tranquility
05:08in Canberra the Quachinis have chosen to build their family home
05:12with precast concrete from ResiCast
05:16mate I tell you what what a cracker of a day
05:19yeah how lucky are we right
05:20oh we should be at the beach mate
05:22anywhere in Canberra
05:23after months of wading through red tape
05:28today is a big step forward
05:30it's knock-down day
05:32builder Mick and owner Sean
05:34can barely wait to begin
05:36especially as Mick's made some pretty big promises
05:39gonna lock the four Betty up for Sean and Sarah and the kids
05:43in 10 days
05:46pretty exciting isn't it
05:47it's been coming for so long
05:48I was at the point where I was ready to get the sledgehammer
05:50and just start doing it myself
05:52do you need a hug or are you okay?
05:54ah give us a hug
05:56there you go buddy
05:57aww
05:58I feel better now
05:59that's enough
05:59are you doing okay?
06:00oh mate I'm happy as Larry
06:02if we get to start
06:03yeah?
06:03yeah
06:05here it goes
06:11well I hope you don't change your mind
06:14there goes the dining room
06:18here comes the brickwork
06:19so the kids have been watching from home
06:26we've had them on the video phone
06:27so they can see a lot of it
06:35for all Sean's excitement
06:37their family home still holds precious memories
06:42I'm actually getting a little bit emotional at this point
06:44you know just watching it all go
06:51so Mick
06:52this
06:53right here
06:54used to be a gazebo
06:55so back in the day
06:56they used to hold weddings right here
06:58weddings?
06:59yeah they used to have weddings
07:00in the backyard
07:01so yeah
07:02Sean
07:03I love you
07:04oh I love you too buddy
07:07it's really nice how well Sean and Mick seem to get along
07:11it's just such a lovely working relationship
07:14and I think we'll end up with a better house because of that
07:19look at the mess
07:20you could have cleaned up for our wedding
07:21look at the mess
07:22hey?
07:23it's not a very good start to our relationship
07:26you know maybe we get a divorce
07:28you can have the house now
07:30I'll get the house in the divorce
07:32that's it
07:33I'm done
07:34I'm going
07:43in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney
07:45after 40 years together
07:47Michael and Helen Fox are building two houses on the same block of land
07:53me and Helen
07:54we're in the process of separating
07:56so we want separate houses
07:58they've chosen to live side by side
08:01so they can both continue to give care to daughter Caitlin
08:06there you go
08:07come on darling
08:08good girl
08:09come on
08:10there's a lot of work behind the scenes
08:12you know that goes into caring for someone with special needs
08:15especially high support needs
08:17we just went to bed and I said look I really don't want you having to move far away
08:20it's not fair
08:21so now we're building one each on the same block
08:25we'll have all of our own kitchen
08:27lounge room, dining
08:28bathroom
08:29and laundry
08:30and we'll actually have a room each for Caitlin
08:34they're small rooms
08:35but we have all that we need
08:37that's all that we need
08:38yeah
08:39so
08:42so here is where mummy's house is
08:44this is a bit strange isn't it?
08:45yeah
08:46because mummy's got a house
08:47and daddy's got a house
08:48but this is mummy's house
08:50and Caitlin's house
08:51and Caitlin's room is going to be over there
08:54yeah
08:55nothing's really changed
08:56the only difference is that we're going to live
08:58or I'm going to live my life more independently
09:01I've been with him for like since I was 21
09:05you know it's lots and lots of years
09:07and I haven't experienced any other life
09:10doing anything else really
09:12so um
09:13yeah
09:14it might sound strange to a lot of people
09:17um
09:19yeah
09:20still emotional
09:22but at the same time
09:25yeah it'd be good
09:27yeah good luck for you
09:30can you come and have a look?
09:33um
09:34yeah
09:35I think I'm coping pretty well with it now
09:37it's uh
09:38initially it was difficult
09:41you think your life's all set
09:45and then everything changes
09:48yeah it makes you feel quite down for quite a while
09:52it takes a while to get over the shock of that
09:54and adapt to it
09:56it sounds quite selfish you know in one way
09:59that you want to do your own thing
10:01but at the same time
10:02it's healthy
10:04because
10:05you are
10:06yeah
10:07huh
10:09yeah
10:10yeah
10:11sorry
10:13it's kind of emotional
10:15still
10:16yeah
10:18yeah
10:24coming up
10:25can Nick realise my vision?
10:27it's a staircase
10:28it's like Morse code
10:29it's like an atom bomb
10:30look I love him
10:32I understand him
10:33uh
10:34and I think we'll get somewhere
10:35and still to come
10:37it's really a matter of choosing
10:39what sort of colourings we're thinking for both the homes
10:43that's just splitting it up
10:44it's one of the advantages
10:45we can choose whatever we want
10:47blow what the other wants
10:48the more things change
10:49okay
10:50it seems the more they stay the same
10:52are you going to say the same thing?
10:53we're going to put the same flooring in
10:55and of course you copied me
10:57well yeah there you go
10:59on our farm in the northern rivers of New South Wales
11:09it's a big day
11:11after months of back and forth
11:13Nick from Contour 3D
11:15is here to show me what I hope
11:16will be the final designs
11:18for our new 3D printed concrete house
11:21good to see you, good to be here
11:22welcome to the homestead
11:23thank you
11:24should have brought my jacket as we're chilling
11:25yeah it is
11:26when we first met Nick
11:29he inspired us with the capabilities of 3D concrete printing
11:34and I want to use those capabilities
11:36to bring nature into our build
11:39I love the idea of having these beautiful concrete trees
11:43yeah
11:44mixed in with a real tree
11:46yep
11:47that might sit in the centre of the house
11:48would that work?
11:49it would
11:50no no genuinely
11:52you know the printer doesn't care
11:54it'll do whatever you put in there
11:55within reason
11:56Nick claims that with 3D printing
11:58almost anything is possible
12:00and in our initial design session
12:02I gave him a clear plan
12:04of exactly what I'm after
12:06that's a staircase
12:08I'll have to work that one out later
12:11it's like Morse code
12:12and this looks like a
12:16it's like an atom bomb
12:18so look
12:19between all these
12:20I love him
12:21I understand him
12:22and I think
12:23we'll get somewhere
12:26I realise I'm asking for a lot here
12:28but it's not unlike me to push the boundaries
12:31yeah there you go
12:32so here's the model
12:33which I'm hoping we can still bring
12:35some of these beautiful
12:37you know tree-like columns
12:39back into the house
12:40the challenge is
12:42has Nick realised my vision?
12:45well
12:46this
12:47is
12:48the tree
12:49that started the whole conversation
12:51look at these buttress roots coming out
12:54I love the way the roots come down
12:56and it feels like it's just completely bedded into the landscape
13:01it's planted
13:02yeah
13:03and this is what we try to mimic
13:05you know in the 3D
13:06absolutely
13:07yeah yeah yeah
13:08I mean I just love the shape
13:09the contours
13:11you'll look out
13:12from the window
13:13yep
13:14through these concrete columns
13:15yep
13:16with a tree that's shaped exactly
13:18as it should
13:19it's amazing
13:20yeah
13:21biomimicry
13:22biomimicry
13:23yeah
13:24it's where we mimic nature
13:26and the idea of having
13:28the roof rest on a forest of concrete trees
13:34concrete trees
13:35I love
13:36shall we?
13:37shall we see it?
13:38is this the final draft?
13:39it's the final
13:40okay great
13:41spin it around
13:42alrighty
13:43okay
13:44so this is the actual layout
13:45that I think we've all settled on
13:47you can walk through the front door here
13:48yep
13:49and look it's just
13:50it'll be stunning
13:51oh it's beautiful
13:52and with a combination of the windows
13:54and the 3D printed columns
13:55yep
13:56you know there's no post finishing of the walls
13:57yep
13:58yep
13:59and that's all organic
14:00it's magic
14:01columns look stunning
14:02yeah
14:03you know part of nature
14:04yeah they do
14:05but we'll get them in in less than a day
14:07really?
14:08it moves rapidly
14:09printing at 200 millimetres a second
14:11no
14:12it just rises out of the ground
14:13so
14:14quicker than watering a tree
14:17if we get this right
14:18yep
14:19this could be an absolute game changer
14:22this might be the way that people build their new houses
14:25before this you know
14:26all credit to you
14:27I'd never thought of
14:28colonising a house I suppose
14:30well I hadn't either
14:31but I was sitting out here
14:32and I looked at the tree
14:33and I'm like
14:34we should just print a tree
14:36yeah
14:37and print many trees
14:40and then put the roof on top of it
14:42I'm excited
14:43mate
14:44me too
14:45I mean this is
14:46this is revolutionary
14:47there's never been a 3D
14:48concrete printed prefab house
14:49so you'll be
14:50you'll be first
14:51we will be first
14:52yes
14:53we will be first
14:54I don't know if I'm crazy
14:56brave
14:57or stupid
14:58but this 3D printed concrete house
15:00is either going to be something very special
15:03or a huge white elephant
15:05in a beautiful forest
15:07if we're going to build houses for the future
15:13we've got to make them more resilient for Australia's changing weather conditions
15:17Hey Meeks
15:18yeah
15:19come and check this out
15:21this is amazing
15:22there's a new online tool that helps identify weather risks for wherever you live
15:27it even provides tips on how to make your home more resilient
15:31so Suncorp Insurance have developed this website
15:35we're just punching our address here
15:37yeah
15:38and there you go
15:39wow
15:41wow
15:42how cool is that
15:43it's me your home
15:44it's good to finally chat
15:46our house talks to us
15:48can you believe I'm over 100 years old
15:51oh
15:52yep
15:53which is why we need to have a serious chat about my resilience
15:57they say a home like me is a high risk for bushfires
16:01this website works for everyone's area so everyone just punches in their own address
16:05whether you're in Canberra or the Blue Mountains or here in Bangalow
16:09but that's incredible
16:10I mean that's a fantastic tool for people that are moving into a property
16:14climate change is something that's really relevant to everybody
16:16you can see your own house
16:18you can see what risks are relevant to you
16:20see what you can do about them
16:22anyway thanks for the chat
16:24I really appreciate you taking the time to listen
16:27and they've even used a fairly elderly voice
16:31no because she's a hundred years old
16:32well this is an old house
16:33that's her house
16:34right
16:38while I'm still mucking around with concrete tree designs for our 3D printed house
16:43in the Blue Mountains
16:44the Fox's two modular homes are well on their way
16:48these are your two houses
16:54wow
16:57this all started last Friday
16:59both houses frames and crosses are up
17:01and you know we are well ahead of time
17:03tomorrow we'll what we call rough-ins
17:06so the electrical, plumbing and the aircon
17:09I think you know we'll achieve lock-up in the next two weeks
17:12well ahead of time as well
17:13wow
17:14they're going very well
17:15that's good
17:16yeah
17:18they've chosen the Snowgum 60 design
17:21two bedrooms with built-in robes
17:23separate bathroom and laundry
17:25open plan lounge and kitchen
17:27with an island bench
17:28there's a lot packed into this 60 square metres
17:31oh it's fantastic
17:33it's really good
17:34very happy with everything
17:36yeah it's brilliant
17:37to come and see what stage they're at
17:39they're moving along really fast
17:41it's incredible
17:42the amount of work these guys have put together in less than a week
17:45the modular building process is not unlike building a lightweight house
17:50the only difference is it takes place indoors
17:54last week it was just raining cats and dogs
17:57okay
17:58but then our factory was just busy ass
18:01you know we were still continuing to build and you know we didn't have any issues
18:04we didn't have to stop because of the inclement weather
18:07okay that's one of the biggest advantages that we take with the modular
18:10with Michael and Helen's house construction forging ahead
18:16they're keen to decide on their flooring
18:18and Carpet Court has made an on-site visit with their mobile showroom to help them choose
18:24so this particular range here is the parki collection
18:28a feature that I think is really important with this product
18:31it's got the wood shield top coating on it
18:34so you're going to find it's going to be really hard and sturdy for you
18:38with their daughter Caitlin in mind the parki floor is the perfect option
18:43as it's resilient and easy to maintain
18:46the other thing that I love about this product is it's sustainable
18:51so it actually uses 25% less wood than other standard timber floors
18:57wow
18:58so it's really a matter of choosing what sort of colourings we're thinking for both the homes
19:04yeah I like probably a lighter colour
19:08because I'm going to have dark walls
19:10okay
19:11but also a natural looking timber
19:14it was an opportunity to choose different ones
19:18so we could be you know as we're splitting it up
19:21it's one of the advantages we can choose whatever we want
19:23blow up the other ones
19:24and we'll do our own thing you know
19:27okay
19:28so yeah
19:29I was thinking originally going for something a bit darker
19:32but I've actually come back to the natural oak
19:35are you going to say the same thing?
19:37we're going to put the same flooring in, I love it
19:41look, let's get this clear
19:43I picked first
19:45all along I wanted this particular one, the natural oak
19:48okay
19:49because I liked its warmth and lighter tone
19:51and of course you copied me
19:53well, yeah, there you go
19:55what more can I say?
19:56what more can I say?
20:09in Canberra the Cochinis have knocked down their house
20:12but now, builder Mick and owner Sean
20:16have hit a major red tape hurdle
20:19do you know much about the solar encroachment?
20:21as much as any layman's person can
20:25my understanding is it's about preventing my house
20:29blocking the solar effect on the neighbours house
20:32that's right, so you don't want to block the neighbours
20:33yeah, which kind of makes sense
20:34because I'm designing this house to maximise the solar effect
20:37we want to let everybody else do the same thing
20:39in Sean's case, the solar encroachment rules require his house
20:44to be built two metres from the neighbours fence
20:46to a wall height of just 1.8 metres
20:49so this has to go down another 900 to reach the finished floor level
20:54I mean look, I'm about two metres tall
20:58oh yeah
20:59two metres out
21:00there's a shadow there, it doesn't even hit the neighbours yard
21:04and we're in the middle of
21:06it doesn't even make it up my fence
21:07my fence is doing more damage to their solar envelope
21:10than the house will
21:11well, true isn't it?
21:12this really is red tape gone mad
21:15so really half a metre down will be your finished floor
21:18you're going to be down in a hole mate
21:20yeah
21:21and what you're saying is
21:22I could probably bring the house up and change that
21:25but I'd have to go through a DA
21:27you'd have to go through a DA
21:28Sean now faces some difficult choices
21:33endure the long delay of applying for a DA
21:36or lower the level of his house
21:38and cop the extra cost of excavating hundreds of tonnes of additional soil
21:47I'm just going to spend the money and not wait
21:49well it's cheaper for you to spend the money than wait
21:52it's cheaper, it's three times as much in rent
21:54correct
21:55it's not even day one
21:59and we're already
22:00and we're already 20 grand in the hole
22:03which is not even a hole yet
22:13Rex and High Tech aren't the only modular home builder
22:16going from strength to strength
22:18I'm heading to Queensland
22:20to see how another modular construction business
22:22Ollie Holmes is growing to meet demand
22:26CEO Dale Funston explains how far they've come
22:30since he joined 15 years ago
22:33so back then how long did it take to build one of these
22:36a small one of these about eight months
22:38eight months
22:39eight months
22:40and what are you building them at now
22:42probably the four piece one eight weeks
22:45unbelievable
22:46yeah
22:47CommBank has led the way when it comes to modular housing loans
22:53and business lending
22:54we know that housing supply is a real challenge
22:57yeah
22:58and prefabricated housing is one way which we really think can help mobilise supply
23:03let's go and have a look at the finished product
23:05great
23:06beautiful
23:11why did CommBank get behind prefab?
23:13yeah I mean first thing is we wanted to do something about Australia's housing crisis
23:17and then what we also have discovered is that manufacturing is alive and well
23:21yes
23:22in Australia in this segment
23:25CommBank's funding is enabling Ollie Holmes to expand their operations
23:30you're now helping him build a second facility is that right?
23:36we are
23:37we are
23:38that's going to be 550 home a year capacity
23:40so that's going to
23:41wow
23:42more than double the capacity that they have here today
23:46so we feel very privileged to be a part of that
23:55having seen the designs for my 3D concrete printed house
23:58I'm visiting the factory where all the magic happens
24:01and I'm told they've got a little surprise for me
24:05oh so we're going to do a VR?
24:07yeah exactly you can see your home
24:08oh great
24:09okay
24:10this is amazing
24:11help you
24:12okay
24:16oh that's beautiful
24:17so you can walk around the house
24:20oh wow
24:21okay
24:22look at the front entrance
24:23oh my
24:26this looks beautiful
24:30wow
24:32this looks incredible mate
24:35look at the tree
24:36look at the tree
24:37we have the real tree into the tree
24:40this is the exact tree on the farm
24:43exactly
24:44the designs Nick showed me on the farm truly have come to life
24:48when you actually put those 3D goggles on and you start walking through the rooms
24:53it feels absolutely surreal
24:56I mean I started feeling seasick
24:58whoa
24:59sorry I'm getting sick
25:00the seasick
25:02it's bizarre
25:03it's so incredible
25:04I've actually never put one of those on
25:06oh yeah it's like you're going to fall over
25:07it's in
25:08I mean like I've got the sweats with excitement
25:12that was amazing mate
25:14that was awesome
25:15really amazing
25:16it's really
25:17fantastic
25:18the virtual version of our 3D concrete printed future home
25:22blows my mind
25:24and it's just a taster
25:29downstairs they're going to test run
25:31the first 3D concrete printed tree column
25:35for our new 3D printed house
25:38this is good
25:39yeah
25:40we're on it
25:41we're going we're printing
25:42this is great
25:43this is not the final material we're going to be using
25:45this is a slow setting material
25:47ok
25:48but we get the general shape
25:49well yeah look the shape looks beautiful
25:51so I can already see the tree
25:52yes yes
25:53starting to form
25:54yep
25:55imagine this all the way through
25:56yeah yeah yeah
25:57and it'll come through
25:58it's like an hourglass
25:59and it'll come nice and straight
26:00and then belly out at the top
26:03I've always wanted to build a house
26:05that mimics nature
26:06right?
26:07sure
26:08and this is the first pillar
26:10of our new home
26:12it is
26:13stunning
26:15so this really is the very first
26:173D printed
26:18prefabricated house
26:20in Australia
26:21if not the world
26:22as far as I know
26:23because it's prefab
26:25everything's built
26:26in the factory
26:27and then brought out to site
26:29nothing like being the first
26:31you could call us guinea pigs
26:33we're always guinea pigs
26:36Nick and his team at 3D Contour
26:39spend months pouring over concrete chemistry
26:42to get their mix exactly right
26:44it's a high performance mortar
26:46almost 50% recycled
26:47we've got a lot of herbs and spices in there
26:49it dries to 60 MPa almost
26:51wow
26:52so it's really tough
26:53that's strong
26:54yeah
26:55mate I'm very excited are you?
26:57yeah yeah I'm a little bit
26:59wait till we finish the test
27:01wait till we finish the test
27:02we're making history here
27:03huh?
27:04I wouldn't expect anything
27:05left from you Jamie
27:07mate it's teamwork
27:08I've got to say
27:09you guys are so good to work with
27:11it's really been fun
27:15so we're getting a few expansion cracks
27:17ohhh
27:19ohhh
27:20no
27:23no
27:25no no no no no no no no
27:43so we're getting a few expansion cracks
27:45ohhh
27:47no
27:49no no no no no no no
27:55this is the first test print
27:58for my 3D concrete printed home
28:00let's just say
28:02it hasn't all gone according to plan
28:04so the moment I saw all of that 3D material
28:08fall into
28:10a pile of cow manure
28:12I just felt like
28:14this is never going to work
28:16because you know
28:18we couldn't even get up
28:20500 millimetres
28:21and we need to get 3.1 metres
28:241 metres high
28:28why did that happen?
28:29so the layers below weren't cured enough yet
28:32so
28:34this was always going to fail?
28:36I thought I'd get to a metre
28:38but I was
28:39right
28:40500 mill short
28:41well I guess that's why we do tests right?
28:43for sure
28:44it gives us a lot of data
28:45it's like
28:46it's like Elon Musk blowing up rockets
28:47he'll blow 5 up and the next one's
28:49next one's good
28:50so
28:51and we're happy to
28:52it's a fail
28:53you know as long as we learn
28:54oh mate
28:55that was
28:56it happens so quickly right?
28:58it does
29:01so I think we learn
29:02we live and learn
29:03and we'll know what to do for next time
29:04so let's get back into it tomorrow
29:06more accelerant
29:07yeah we're going to use a different mix
29:10mix
29:11I'll be honest
29:12seeing the column collapse
29:14was like watching my dream crumble
29:16right before my eyes
29:19Nick's still confident
29:20but I'm starting to feel just a tad worried
29:23up in the blue mountains
29:34Helen is looking on the bright side
29:36as she explores her new neighbourhood
29:38yeah this is our street
29:41yeah you can hear the highway
29:44yeah you can hear the railway
29:46but it's quite pretty
29:47ah here we go
29:49this is actually a high-tech home here
29:52and uh
29:54his is actually a bit bigger than ours
29:56he's even got a slow combustion
29:58that's fantastic
30:00the foxes have chosen the high-tech snow gum design
30:04which is just 60 square metres
30:06and costs only 76k each to lock up
30:10when you add internals and fit out
30:13plus delivery and assembly
30:14the costs can vary a lot
30:16in the case of the foxes
30:18the total cost for each house
30:20is just over 200k
30:23incredibly high-tech promises
30:25both houses will be delivered on site
30:28and installed in 12 weeks
30:31they've got to first stage
30:34got the walls up
30:35it's starting to look good isn't it
30:36yeah
30:37and um yeah I'm really hopeful
30:38for what's going to happen next
30:40yeah so far so good
30:41it looks good
30:42with both houses only being 60 square metres each
30:46Michael and Helen know
30:48there'll be some challenges
30:49I think it'll be pretty small
30:51but it'll be manageable
30:53don't you think?
30:55I hope so
30:57well
30:58worst comes to worst
30:59we could join them together
31:00and you know
31:01I'm sure it'll be okay
31:03yeah
31:04but you'd have to move out
31:05without walls
31:07sorry
31:13in any house renovation
31:15or build
31:16choosing the styling
31:17is definitely the fun bit
31:19well we're here at
31:20Oddy Australia
31:21they are all things
31:22bathroom

31:41path toe
31:42this is the Bondi
31:44that's nice
31:45this is the little mini
31:46it's cute
31:47I like it a lot
31:48it looks like the old
31:49the old tubs
31:50I love it
31:51really exciting collection
31:52the Bondi collection
31:53the Bondi collection
31:54so this is all about curves
31:58and what's perfect about these ranges
31:59as you can see
32:00it's the plywood detailing
32:01yeah
32:02so this is water resistant
32:03but traditionally
32:04a lot of this joinery
32:05has been MDF
32:06right?
32:07always been MDF
32:08so why do you do it out of plywood?
32:09because it's more sustainable
32:10right
32:11so it's longer lasting
32:12yeah
32:13you'll love it forever
32:14until you're sick of it
32:15yeah
32:16and no formaldehyde
32:17no formaldehyde
32:18less volatile compounds
32:19yeah
32:20tick

32:29so this is face lighting
32:31perfect for makeup
32:32it's like a tick tock light

32:36there you go
32:37maybe you
32:38I can teach you how to dance
32:40or maybe you can teach me how to dance
32:41we could revive the manpower days
32:44oh yeah
32:45great
32:46let's move on
32:51now being a gardener
32:52my first instinct
32:53is to start any build
32:55with the garden
32:58regardless of the fact
32:59that our 3D test print failed
33:01I'm still chasing my DA
33:03and money's getting tighter by the day
33:07in a couple of years time
33:09we won't have to buy any fruit
33:10we won't have to buy any fruit
33:11oh definitely
33:12definitely
33:13definitely
33:14our grand plan is to replace the cows
33:16with trees
33:17which is why I've been making plenty of visits
33:20to Tony
33:21our local fruit tree guru
33:23how are you Jamie
33:24how are you going mate
33:25how are you Tony

33:46well that takes care of my avocado
33:47for the year
33:48doesn't it
33:49alright what else have we got
33:51spent about three and a half thousand on fruit trees
33:54he bargained hard too
33:56I wouldn't mind some more of those dark oranges
33:59we've got some peaches, nectarines
34:01we've got a blood plum
34:03blood plum
34:04May, June here
34:06great

34:19I don't think there's anything left
34:20okay
34:21that's it
34:24I'm gonna
34:25I'm gonna rename you the fruit Yoda
34:27is that alright?
34:28that's alright
34:29go for it
34:31plus you're the only bloke I know that's actually shorter than me
34:33yeah thanks
34:34so this is going well
34:37so part of my negotiation tactic
34:40was that I would gift him some of our prize roosters
34:45this is where I get the big discount
34:47we love our roosters don't we?
34:49would we call them a gift?
34:53they're the gift that keeps giving
34:54yeah
34:55at 3am everyday
34:56yeah
34:57they're in the prime of their life
34:59this has got to get me at least a hundred bucks off
35:01holy moly
35:06I didn't think it was that person
35:08he'll come back mate
35:09he'll come back
35:10off he goes
35:12have you ever tried to catch a rooster?
35:14it's not easy
35:18we'll get him
35:19he he he he he
35:20I'll do it
35:21I'll do it
35:25coming up
35:26the animals have gotten in
35:27and eaten all the trees
35:28it's the attack of the herbivores
35:31I want to get rid of all the cows
35:33and replace them with trees
35:40and later
35:41unless we get this resolved in the next 24 hours
35:43I'm gonna have to go talk to the real estate
35:45and find out how much I can get for selling this block as it is
35:47bureaucratic bungles
35:49leave Sean's dream home
35:51hanging by a thread
35:52we can't move forward
36:01on the farm
36:02it's been two weeks
36:03since I bought a forest worth of fruit trees
36:05from the nursery
36:06and I've just heard from my farm hand Fab
36:10there's been a little hiccup
36:13so mate
36:14what happened?
36:18so
36:19the animals have gotten in
36:21and eaten all the trees
36:23they look
36:24a quarter of the size
36:25that they were
36:26oh yeah
36:28did someone leave the gate open?
36:30well yeah
36:31the bottom gate got left open
36:33and
36:34there's also another gate down the other end
36:36that
36:37they've knocked over
36:38the cows I think
36:39right
36:40right
36:44this is like three and a half grand's worth of fruit trees
36:48I thought this would be great
36:49in a couple of years time
36:50we'll start bearing fruit
36:51and
36:52off we go
36:54we've probably lost a year of growth
36:56if not more
36:58well that's
36:59because they're all
37:00this high
37:01I know mate I know
37:02full of leaves
37:03you know
37:04don't tell me
37:05farming 101
37:07close the gates
37:10farm life
37:11it's tough on the farm
37:13I'm going to put barbed wire
37:15and an electric wire
37:17I mean it's obviously works on every other farm in Australia so
37:20yeah
37:21I've never put up an electric fence before I wouldn't know
37:26I want to get rid of all the cows
37:28and replace them with trees
37:30we're going to start absorbing carbon
37:32producing renewable energy
37:34and producing food
37:35yeah
37:36yeah
37:37I'm glad you're on this train with me mate
37:40okay
37:41I feel like I might need to go out and purchase a few more
37:44trees?
37:45yeah
37:50more trees aren't the only thing on the shopping list for our new future home
37:54we're also looking for the most energy efficient kitchen and laundry appliances
38:00so we try to make sure that we work with brands and suppliers that have a whole range of options
38:07ASCO in particular are probably one of our most sustainable brands
38:10so in terms of the electricity and water efficiency but also in terms of how recyclable their products are at the end of their lives
38:18so they're thinking about the circular economy
38:20100%
38:21how we use it
38:22and then also what happens once we're done with it
38:24amazing
38:25whoa
38:30these look cool
38:31what do these do?
38:32these ones
38:33you've got your washing machine and your dryer
38:35it has a 10 star energy rating
38:37so it doesn't get much better than that
38:39that's amazing
38:40yeah you can't beat that
38:41because the dryers are one of the biggest energy users in the household
38:44right?
38:45100%
38:46okay we've got kitchen cupboard
38:47yep
38:48we've got laundry cupboard
38:49Jazz you've nailed this
38:55the foxes are also making decisions about their kitchens
39:01so Neolith is a sintered stone product
39:04it mimics a really similar process that natural stone
39:07so your marbles go through
39:09and then the heat is actually what gives it the pattern that you see on the product
39:14so it's not printed
39:15it's baked
39:20because of the way that we manufacture
39:21it's completely non-porous
39:23meaning that it's really resistant to staining
39:26and it's ultra-hygienic
39:28so you only need to use a little bit of soap
39:30some warm water
39:31and it's completely clean
39:32fantastic
39:33yeah
39:34love it already
39:37Neolith's sintered stone
39:39is 100% carbon neutral
39:41and greatly reduced silica
39:43silica
39:44and then we have my favourite of the collection
39:46which is called Taj Mahal
39:48so this has got a really creamy neutral
39:51it's quite a soft vein
39:53yeah
39:54I like that but I think I might regret it
39:57it does look like
39:58you like the kind of dramatics
40:00I don't know what it is
40:02I'm checking out this one
40:03yeah
40:04I don't know why
40:06she could tell actually which one I was going to choose
40:09and it was called
40:10Taj Mahal
40:11Taj Mahal
40:12well
40:13I think I'd probably have to go the same way
40:15yeah
40:16she was the same
40:17well
40:18he's led the right way
40:20well
40:21chosen the same again
40:23it seems the more things change
40:25the more they really do stay the same
40:29next up on the shopping list for our future home
40:32is fans
40:33and when it comes to fans
40:34there's no bigger brand than this
40:36I think the key things with fans is that they're moving air throughout that whole house 24 hours a day and it'll probably cost you anywhere between $8 and $12 a year
40:49oh wow
40:50oh wow that's it
40:51yeah
40:52yeah well they hardly draw any electricity
40:54this beautifully designed bamboo model is called a Haiku Luxe
40:59the blades themselves have been designed to mimic an aircraft wing
41:02a 2.1 meter diameter fan
41:05just bear in mind you need a really big room and some pretty high ceilings to get that one in
41:10so Jamie this one here is basically eight layers of most so bamboo layered on top of one another to produce this finish and from a sustainability perspective it's certainly best in class
41:22yep
41:23I can see this in the main living area
41:26now we've also got a bearing of that particular model that we've just brought to Australia it's called the Coastal Haiku
41:33we make these fans as durable as possible in outdoor environments and the Coastal model for your outdoor areas would be the go
41:42sign me up for that one
41:45coming up
41:47just I'm done
41:49I'm done
41:50Sean pulls the plug
41:54and
41:55listen if we didn't innovate
41:57we wouldn't have light globes would we
42:00Edison you're calling yourself
42:02no
42:11in Canberra Sean Quaccini has yet another red tape bungle to unravel
42:16why are we stuck once again on trees
42:23a number of a tree on the number of a tree on a report
42:27it's approved
42:29and the problem is
42:31that the certifier won't go I agree
42:34because of a number on a tree one number
42:37because that one number is not the same as that number
42:40an admin issue has resulted in the trees on Sean's plans being numbered differently in two different reports
42:49in the automated system that you have to fill it out on the thing you have to mark which trees they need to assess
42:54and then that creates the number of the tree it doesn't take it off the plan that you submit
43:00it just creates in whatever order you put them on them you drew them on their map
43:04yeah
43:05that's all it is
43:07not hard
43:08there's no legal reason to do this
43:13to stop this from happening
43:18Sean's been trying unsuccessfully
43:21to navigate the ACT's fast track building approval process for 12 weeks
43:26longer than the 10 weeks it takes to build a ResiCast house
43:31he's now run out of time
43:34money
43:35and patience
43:38so right now unless we get this resolved in the next 24 hours
43:42I'm going to have to go talk to the real estate and find out how much I can get for selling this block as it is
43:46because we can't move forward
43:49this has been months of stupidity
44:01I'm just... I'm... I'm done. I'm done.
44:15Back on the farm
44:17those pesky cows may think they've got the better of me
44:20but they can't stop me enjoying a big juicy steak with my mates
44:24it's also a great time for my beautiful singer songwriter Amika
44:30and her band partner Matt Boylan Smith
44:33to set the mood
44:35take me to the ocean
44:38and find me in the breeze
44:41for my body hearty inside
44:44spring will come again you'll see
44:47of course
44:49Jamie would plant fruit trees and have a great vision
44:51and then the cows would escape the paddock
44:54and eat the fruit trees
44:56that's just what happens to us
44:58is it annoying? yes
45:00is it frustrating? sure
45:02I think you just gotta laugh and keep going
45:04otherwise I would be quite literally mad
45:06the 3D printing test fail on the other hand
45:10is no little thing
45:12it's a little things, little things, little things, little things, yeah
45:16I'm actually really, really excited
45:18to live in the 3D printed home
45:21I'm just really
45:23at the moment apprehensive
45:25that it's going to work
45:27because it's experimental
45:29I'm nervous
45:32I'm really nervous
45:35there's no plan B
45:37there really is no plan B
45:39we're in too deep now
45:41we've committed
45:43but I guess we've got to put faith in the team around us
45:45and hope that it all works
45:48because, listen, if we didn't innovate
45:51we wouldn't have light globes, would we?
45:54Edison, you're calling yourself
45:57no!
45:59you're comparing yourself to Edison
46:01no, I'm just saying
46:03we've got to try new things
46:04we've got to try new things
46:19next time on Future House
46:22Sean finally gets some good news
46:24It's all been in theory until this point
46:26until this point, and now it's here, it's real, it's great.
46:30Oh, I think just like it's a dream come true.
46:32It sounds so corny, but it is.
46:36It's just a dream.
46:37Yep, I've got it, oh, there we go.
46:39We built a house in the time you went
46:41and bought five chickens, mate.
46:43Well, nine chickens, thank you very much.
46:45But at our farm on the Northern Rivers.
46:47Oh, this way.
46:48Yeah, this way.
46:50It's a disaster.
46:56Oh.
46:59Oh, oh, okay.
47:18Yeah.
47:20Yeah.
