A new release from The International Union for the Conservation of Nature announced that at least 40% of tree species around the world are at risk of extinction.

00:09The assessment determined that at least 16,425 of the 47,282 evaluated species are at risk of

00:19extinction. More than 2,000 of those endangered species are used for medicines, food, and fuel.

00:25The Director General of the IUCN said in a statement, quote,

00:30Trees are essential to support life on Earth through their vital role in ecosystems,

00:35and millions of people depend on them for their lives and livelihoods.

00:39The IUCN-discovered tree species are at risk of extinction in 192 countries around the world,

00:47and those facing the most threat are on islands.

00:50Climate change, urban development, and deforestation put trees at risk in the tropics

00:55due to their higher risk of storms or other natural disasters.

00:59Some countries like Ghana and Colombia already have national strategies in place,

01:04but experts emphasize the need for governments and companies to support reforestation efforts.
