Judy Greer Talks Her New Movie 'Wilson'
Transcript
00:00You are such a warm, nurturing character.
00:04What made you want to play this part?
00:07Well, many reasons.
00:09I really loved the script.
00:12That's usually where it starts,
00:14although this I could argue that Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern
00:17were as much of a contributing factor as the script itself.
00:21And then I'd been a huge fan of the Skeleton Twins,
00:24so I was really hoping to someday work with Craig Johnson.
00:27The writer.
00:28The director.
00:29Oh, that's right, the director.
00:31Yeah.
00:32And so when you read the part of Shelley,
00:35what did you think about her?
00:38She starts as a dog walker.
00:41Why do you feel that she connected so much with the Wilson character?
00:48I think Shelley was also a little bit lost
00:52and looking for a connection in life,
00:55kind of like my perception of Wilson.
00:58And I think she saw the good in Wilson in a way that no other character in the movie really did.
01:07Maybe you could argue Claire did.
01:09But, yeah, I think Shelley just really was a grounding force for Wilson and helped him to...
01:22Well, she's someone who never tried to change Wilson and she accepted all of his Wilson-isms and didn't really require anything from him.
01:33And so it gave him some space.
01:35Well, she also, so she was the dog walker.
01:39And then what did you become?
01:40I couldn't quite understand.
01:42Yeah, we, she became a real estate agent.
01:45Oh, really?
01:46Yeah.
01:47She became a real estate agent.
01:48So she got like a real job.
01:49She did.
01:50Although, I would totally argue that walking dogs is a real job and so did my dog walker personally.
01:54But, yeah, she did.
01:55She, she got a real estate license and she became a real estate agent.
01:59It was, I think it was sort of one of those things that was in the script.
02:03Didn't really make the final cut.
02:04Right.
02:05Not super necessary to the plot.
02:06You feel that she's changed and that she's grown up.
02:08But, yes, that was, yes.
02:11She also had a really nice place, too.
02:13She had a cute little house, huh?
02:14Really?
02:15I know.
02:16Really nice place.
02:17I loved it in there.
02:18I didn't want to leave.
02:19I really didn't.
02:20It was so homey.
02:21Neither did Wilson.
02:22No and no.
02:24Did, now, did she, so did you figure out what Wilson's job was either?
02:33You know, that was something.
02:34How did he support himself?
02:35You know, that's funny.
02:36Someone asked that at a Q&A that we did in Los Angeles last week.
02:39And I don't, I kind of vaguely remember this in the script.
02:42But there was a line that came up about Wilson and the money from the settlement.
02:49So maybe we were thinking that he was living off of some kind of settlement or something
02:56that who knows what might have happened before our movie begins.
03:00That he's, he's just enough savvy with money to be able to stretch it out to a forever living situation.
03:07Yeah, really.
03:08And if you're living in the same apartment for that many years, you're probably not paying a lot of rent.
03:12Right.
03:13Yeah, because that was something I kept wondering about because he seemed, like he seemed to have everything he needed.
03:19That wasn't a concern.
03:20Yeah.
03:21He had a low overhead.
03:22Yeah.
03:23And lived a very simple, small life.
03:26Mm-hmm.
03:27And why do you think, like do you think that Shelly, she had a line about how most men, you know, so many men just kind of want to use you or they're after something.
03:41Like she seemed to appreciate, she had some concerns about manner that you couldn't find a good man.
03:47Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:49And somehow she felt that Wilson was more empathetic or understanding.
03:54Is that?
03:55Yeah, she did.
03:56I think Shelly's someone who's probably been through a lot of men, not in a slutty way naturally.
04:02No.
04:03She didn't seem slutty.
04:04No.
04:05I think she's been through a lot of relationships, I'll say.
04:08And Wilson was, I don't know, he provided sort of like a freshness in his views on the world.
04:19And I think that maybe Shelly liked having someone expect, having high expectations of society.
04:28Shelly was happy to cohabitate with someone that was thoughtful and in, it seemed like they spend a lot of time together.
04:39I mean, you never really know.
04:41It's all sort of made up in your head what's not on the text, but in the script.
04:45Right.
04:46So I just.
04:47It seemed like he just kind of moved in.
04:48Yeah.
04:49As soon as he had nowhere to live.
04:50Yeah.
04:51So he just kind of moved in.
04:52And this is a woman who.
04:53You were open.
04:54You were nurturing.
04:55She takes in strays.
04:56Yeah, right.
04:57She cares for animals.
04:58She cares for rescues.
04:59And I think in a way, Shelly rescued Wilson.
