00:00The clams are dropped into a water tank with their shells wide open.

00:04But the moment contaminated water flows in, they slam shut all at once.

00:09You see, in the wild, clams pull water through their bodies to eat tiny bits of food floating inside.

00:16But if the water is too dirty, they instantly close to protect themselves.

00:21So scientists attach a small piece of metal to each clam's shell.

00:25And when the clam shuts, the metal taps a sensor and that triggers a warning.

00:30This method is used to monitor the water supply for contamination.

00:34And as long as their shells stay open, the water is safe to drink.
