00:00Police get into a wrestling match with a 600-pound alligator.
00:04In Sarasota County this week, deputies faced a serious challenge not from criminals,
00:09but from a massive 14-foot alligator weighing around 600 pounds.
00:14The dramatic scene unfolded as a team of seven sheriff's deputies worked alongside a professional trapper
00:19to capture and safely remove the enormous reptile from a local area.
00:24The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office released video footage of the capture,
00:27which showed the intense effort involved.
00:30The trapper managed to secure the alligator's powerful jaws using a clamp device,
00:34while the deputies quickly moved in to pin down its legs and thick, muscular tail.
00:39According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission,
00:42alligators become less active when temperatures drop.
00:46They stop eating when the weather dips below 70 degrees Fahrenheit
00:49and enter a dormant or very low activity state once temperatures fall under 55 degrees.
00:55Daytime temperatures in Sarasota County have recently stayed in the low 70s,
00:59which is right around the point when these cold-blooded animals begin to seek out warmth and slow down.
01:04This is also seen in other Florida reptiles, like iguanas,
01:08which are known to become cold-stunned during winter snaps.
01:12In very cold weather, iguanas have been spotted falling from trees,
01:15frozen in place from the sudden temperature drop,
01:18a strange but common sight during Florida winters.
01:21The large alligator in this case was not injured,
01:24and, according to the sheriff's office, was safely relocated to an alligator farm.
01:30Authorities encourage residents to call professionals
01:32and not attempt to approach or remove wild animals on their own.
01:36Thankfully, this story ended without injuries,
01:38and the alligator is now in a new home where it can be observed,
01:42cared for, and, most importantly,
01:45kept away from residential neighborhoods.
