00:30...for our next extreme trek.
00:33Where we'll head deep into the Atlas Mountains, exploring the heartland of the Berber people, and attempt to summit Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
00:46This world is big and beautiful, and there's a lot to be explored.
00:51This time we're going deeper, further, not knowing what to expect, not knowing who we'll meet, embracing the unfamiliar.
01:02As we enter new worlds, venturing into wild landscapes and isolated cultures, one step at a time.
01:16Oh, this is beautiful.
01:18Journeying through inhospitable environments.
01:23We've come into a huge snowstorm.
01:27Taking on extraordinary challenges.
01:31In unique and amazing places.
01:35And they have stories to tell.
01:37Join me, Ryan Pyle, as we embark on these extreme treks.
01:42It's early morning, and the warm amber hues of the morning sky welcome in another day.
01:58The Atlas Mountains form a majestic backdrop to the city of Marrakesh.
02:07We are soon to be heading out into those mountains.
02:11And so what better way to get a clearer view of them than from high above the desert?
02:15Early in the morning, it's been kind of biting cold, but it's spectacular because in a few minutes, just over the Atlas Mountains, in the east, the sun is going to pop up over the ridge.
02:33It's going to be spectacular.
02:35What a perfect morning for a hot air balloon.
02:43Absolutely glorious views.
02:49This is what we are here to see and understand.
02:52The Atlas Mountains, surrounded by endless desert, with us floating in a small basket above it all.
02:59With our pilot, Maurice.
03:03Are we okay?
03:05Yes.
03:05Okay.
03:06I trust you.
03:09You are obliged.
03:10I am obliged.
03:11I have no choice.
03:13I'm playing near to be every morning, and for me, it's always like the first time.
03:20What is it about the early morning you love the most?
03:22Oh, um, the world is quiet.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Peaceful.
03:27We are in a wonderful place, very quiet.
03:31You can see Atlas Mountains, Jubilate Mountains.
03:34To fly a balloon is my yoga.
03:37I feel very relaxed after the flight, after landing.
03:41It's the best moment.
03:43It's awesome.
03:45That was one of the greatest experiences I've had.
03:53You brought me up to the heavens, and you brought me down safe.
03:55Okay.
03:56Thanks, Maz.
03:57Thanks, Maz.
03:58It's my job.
03:59That was just spectacular to be able to fly in a hot air balloon over the desert surrounding
04:06Marrakech with the Atlas Mountains in the distance and watching the sun come up and give
04:11warmth to the land is quite a treat, and it's kind of pumped me up for our upcoming adventure
04:18in the Atlas Mountains.
04:26Returning to Marrakech, the streets are coming to life with merchants setting up their stalls,
04:31opening up their shops, and putting out their wares for the day's trading.
04:35Marrakech has long been a meeting point for different cultures, and so has a very vibrant
04:41market life.
04:46The inner city streets and back alleys make for a great place to walk and explore.
04:54It's been amazing to just wander around the back alleyways of Marrakech, twisting and turning
05:02through all the small streets.
05:04And one thing that you can actually see from anywhere in this city is the minaret of the
05:08Kuchabia Mosque, which is where we are right now.
05:11The 12th century mosque has this central minaret 77 meters high, and you can see it from almost
05:17anywhere in this city, even from deep in the Medina.
05:20The architecture of the brickwork is really spectacular, and if we're lucky, in a few
05:25minutes we'll hear the call to prayer.
05:42Travelers of all types can be found taking pictures of this local icon, so it was a fitting
05:46place to meet Ali, a wonderfully talented photographer, and also a native of Marrakech.
05:53Ali.
05:54Nice to meet you.
05:55Thank you so much for meeting with me today.
05:57Yeah, that's my pleasure.
05:58As a fellow photographer, I hope to see Marrakech through his eyes, and learn a little of the
06:03Atlas Mountains we are soon to be walking in.
06:05Here.
06:06So I used to work here, I knew all the people at the time, right?
06:10Yeah.
06:11Moroccans love this place, and Moroccans always, the Moroccans from Casablanca, Rabat.
06:16Yeah.
06:17Each time they come, they stop at this place and eat something.
06:20Yeah.
06:21That's great.
06:22So, we can go this way, I think.
06:24Okay.
06:25Ali described the area of the bazaar that we were in.
06:28Having grown up and worked here, Ali knew this market like the back of his hand.
06:33It was great to have him guide me through the stalls, watching him connect with people
06:36he's known since his childhood.
06:38Thank you.
06:43And one thing that I like here is that it's always changing.
06:46Every day, there are new things.
06:48Right.
06:49It's moving.
06:50Always moving.
06:51This is the shop of my grandfather.
06:53Oh, really?
06:54This one here, was it always leather or was it something else?
06:57It's quite of everything.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Yeah.
07:01So, your father may have worked there when he was very young.
07:03Probably.
07:04Yeah?
07:05This was Ali's world, and we soon found his local cafe and ordered up two local coffees.
07:11Here is the maher-sa.
07:13Oh, that's stylish.
07:15That is called maher-sa.
07:16That means broken.
07:17It is coffee broken with milk.
07:20Maher-sa.
07:21Very good.
07:22Maher-sa.
07:23Maher-sa.
07:24Fine.
07:25Okay.
07:26I'll be more concerned soon.
07:27Yeah.
07:28I'll be sure with you, but it's not too whiskey.
07:31Tell me some of the subjects that you work on with your artistic photography.
07:35You're lucky as I have just published a book.
07:38Beautiful.
07:39I got more or less two faces.
07:42People.
07:43Ali's photographic work had two main themes.
07:46Portraiture and landscapes.
07:49Have you done any work in the Atlas Mountains?
07:52Yes, of course.
07:53Most of my work, I did it in the Atlas Mountains.
07:55For me, the best of this area is the mountains.
07:59And what are the Berber people like?
08:01They are beautiful.
08:02They are burned, you know, with the sun and wind.
08:04And wind.
08:05And you can read the natural life.
08:08In their faces.
08:09Yeah.
08:10What I like there too is that you got the village and all the rest is space.
08:14Landscapes.
08:15High mountains.
08:16High mountains, yes.
08:17Blue rivers.
08:18Rivers with little water.
08:21Yeah?
08:22Oh, really?
08:23Yes, because we don't have so much water.
08:25That's the problem we have here in the south, in the south of Morocco.
08:30It'll be cold though.
08:31There's no snow.
08:32Of course, it's always cold there, even in summer.
08:34But now there's no snow and the snow could stop you.
08:37What is still good today is that we have everything here.
08:40We still have everything.
08:41Right.
08:42I don't think it will last.
08:43So good luck, of course.
08:45And bring me some pictures, some good pictures.
08:48I'll come back and I'll let you know how we do.
08:49Yes.
08:50Ali's descriptions of life in the mountains had fired up my appetite for what lay ahead.
08:56But before we left Marrakesh, there was one more place I wanted to check out.
08:59The famous evening bazaar.
09:01I've done a fair amount of traveling and I always enjoy checking out the local night markets.
09:06They're bound to hold a few surprises.
09:08Things you wouldn't find back home.
09:14And you might get roped into some peculiar situations.
09:29The snake charmers have such control over the snakes.
09:42It's almost as if they speak the same language.
09:45This is the closest I've ever really been to a cobra.
09:56And I wasn't keen on getting any closer.
09:58Playing with these creatures seems like playing with fire.
10:04I've been in uncomfortable situations before, but reptiles are another fear altogether.
10:19The snake charmer can see how scared I am.
10:32And he's having plenty of fun with it.
10:35And we're wrapped.
10:36Let's get out of here.
10:37Someone get the snake off my neck.
10:38An unbelievable sense of relief to have that snake off my neck.
10:54The city of Marrakesh has been a melting pot for different cultures in North Africa for centuries.
11:07Each bringing their own traditions, customs, languages and of course food.
11:11And nowhere is this diversity more readily available than at the night market.
11:16Finally made it to the Marrakesh night market, and I'm here to try the very famous sheep brain.
11:25So let's go see if I can find some of that.
11:29I came here to meet a good friend, Retta, who'd been helping me organize this trip.
11:34Retta.
11:35Hi.
11:36How are you?
11:37Very good.
11:38How are you doing?
11:39Where have you been?
11:40I've been lost in the market.
11:41No way.
11:42Yeah yeah.
11:43One of the best chips in the market.
11:45Nice to meet you.
11:46What are we eating tonight?
11:48So we have sheep brains.
11:49Okay.
11:50A sheep's head.
11:51Okay.
11:52Cow tongue.
11:53Cow tongue.
11:54Okay.
11:55And we have the very famous dish of Marrakesh, which is Sanjia.
11:58A meat that is cooked for more than 12 hours.
12:01Let's try some sheep brain.
12:02Are you sure?
12:03Yeah, just one.
12:04I just want to try it.
12:05I'm here.
12:06What about the sheep if...
12:07Is he a bit dumb?
12:08Yeah.
12:09Then maybe it'll hurt me a little bit too.
12:11Can we get one like this?
12:13That's your...
12:14That's the sheep brain?
12:15Yes.
12:16The sheep brain.
12:17Okay.
12:18Just brains, mix.
12:19Let's try brain first.
12:20Let's try the brain first.
12:21If you succeed, you're gonna go to something else.
12:22Are we going to share the brain?
12:23Yes, please.
12:24We can share, we can share.
12:25Let's try to share the brain.
12:26Oh, it's very soft.
12:27It's very tasty.
12:28Very good.
12:29The texture, the texture is gonna hurt.
12:30All right.
12:31All right.
12:32So that is sheep brain with tangier sauce.
12:33And olive.
12:34So how do we eat it?
12:35With our hands?
12:36Normally in Morocco, we eat it with the bread.
12:37Not with a fork.
12:38Not with a fork.
12:39No, yeah, no.
12:40So I got my bread?
12:41No, no.
12:42Not like this.
12:43Like this?
12:44Like this?
12:45Yeah yeah.
12:46Like this?
12:47Yeah yeah.
12:48Feeling off a little?
12:49Yeah.
12:50Soft.
12:51Soft.
12:52Soft and easy.
12:53I'm getting an authentic introduction to this food from Reda.
12:55And he's not short on encouragement either.
12:56More, more, more, more, more.
12:57No, no, no.
12:58Come on.
12:59No, this is nothing.
13:00No, no.
13:01Piece, piece.
13:02More, more.
13:03I gotta get more?
13:04This piece, this piece.
13:05Okay.
13:06Come on.
13:07No, no.
13:08No, no.
13:09Come on.
13:10No, no.
13:11This is nothing.
13:12No, no.
13:13Piece, piece.
13:14More, more.
13:15Come on.
13:16Are you coming all the way to market?
13:19Okay.
13:20One, two.
13:21One, two, three and in.
13:22One, two, three and in.
13:23One, two, three and in.
13:24Is this your first time?
13:26First time with sheep brains.
13:28So it's going to be very easy.
13:30It's very delicious.
13:31Bottoms up.
13:32Ready?
13:33Yes.
13:34One, two, three.
13:35Go.
13:38It tastes very delicious.
13:40Don't think about the brain when you swallow it.
13:43I hadn't actually thought about it.
13:48It's too soft.
13:49It's like there's nothing there, but you can taste it.
13:52Okay.
13:53Mix with the bread.
13:54Mix with the sauce.
13:56It does cover the flavor a little bit.
13:58But the texture is so soft.
14:01It almost tastes like, like, like overcooked, like a super soft chicken or something.
14:06I can't get used to the texture.
14:09Let me show you.
14:11Oh my God.
14:13Not bad.
14:15Okay.
14:16I've done sheep's brain.
14:17I'm feeling pretty good about it.
14:19So let's go to...
14:20Ice.
14:21Ice?
14:22Yeah.
14:23I can eat everything except ice.
14:26Except for ice.
14:27You're much braver than I am.
14:28Retta, thank you very much for introducing a little Moroccan Marrakesh cuisine to me.
14:34Yeah, my wife would love this stuff, actually.
14:36You're more than welcome.
14:37I've had an amazing time here in Marrakesh.
14:40And it's been a great kind of introduction to Morocco.
14:43And now I'm finally ready, after a good meal, to get out into the Atlas Mountains and go for a good long trek.
14:50Good time.
14:51Thanks, boss.
14:52Cool.
14:53Just 60 kilometers south of Marrakesh, the Atlas Mountains rise up from the desert floor.
15:05After a quick 90-minute drive, we'll connect with the team and begin our trek.
15:09For the next week, we'll walk through the mountain valleys of the Berber people and eventually arrive at the summit of the tallest peak in North Africa, Mount Tubkal.
15:22Hey.
15:23Hello.
15:24Hello.
15:25Our drive ends in a remote spot on the highway.
15:27It's now time to meet our guides, porters and chef.
15:30Okay, so we're the team with three Ibrahims.
15:32Yeah.
15:33Okay.
15:34Ibrahim, a local Berber from the area, will guide us on this adventure.
15:38And this trip, you get to be on camera.
15:40Oh, I will be on the TV.
15:45There's nothing more exciting than the 10 or 20 minutes before we begin the trek.
15:49Everyone's kind of rushing around to do last-minute things.
15:52We're packing the donkeys.
15:53I'm excited to get out onto the trail.
15:55I'm excited to sweat.
15:56I just want to get up into the hills.
15:59Put me on?
16:00No, no, I can walk.
16:01My legs are good.
16:02Ready for a great adventure.
16:04I'm from Canada, but I live in China.
16:07Ibrahim and I set off ahead of the rest of the team.
16:09It's a good chance for us to get to know each other.
16:12So you've grown up in these hills your whole life?
16:14Yes.
16:15I'm from this area.
16:16I'm one of the Berbers, you know?
16:18Have you ever lived anywhere else?
16:20I don't know.
16:21This took my life as well.
16:25It feels good to be on the move, our legs working again as we climb up into the mountains,
16:30crossing through these beautiful Berber villages.
16:34As they were made with all local materials, they blend harmoniously with their mountain setting.
16:45It's kind of just out of this world.
16:48It's from another time.
16:50As you walk deeper into the mountains, you walk further back into time.
16:54The history is spectacular.
16:55And it was great having Ibrahim to give me some insights into our surroundings.
17:02From here, you can see the highest ski resort in Africa.
17:06The highest police station?
17:08Ski.
17:09Oh, ski resort.
17:10You see the one in the middle?
17:12Yeah.
17:13There is a ski lift on the other side.
17:15You can ski from there down to the other side.
17:19It's 3,200 meters high, yes?
17:21There is no snow.
17:23Abraham was telling me earlier that last year, at this time, there was a ton of snow in February.
17:30But there seems to be some kind of drought.
17:32All the mountains around us are kind of bare and brown.
17:36It's almost like a desert, high-altitude desert here in the Atlas Mountains.
17:45Yeah, man.
17:51What is this?
17:53This is a shelter.
17:55So this shelter, is this for people or just for animals?
17:58For animals, but always there is one room for the shepherd.
18:02For the shepherd.
18:03Because in the mountains there's like wolves?
18:06Yeah, there are wild dogs and foxes.
18:10They attack them.
18:11Because he would make a very good meal, right?
18:14It's really nice meal for a fox.
18:16For a fox, yeah.
18:17Because he's too small to run away.
18:19Yeah.
18:20How old is he?
18:21Five, six days old.
18:23Days?
18:24Yeah.
18:25Would you like to take a look inside?
18:26Yeah, I would love to take a look inside.
18:27Yeah, come inside, see the sheep.
18:29Oh my God, there's so many little ones.
18:32This is what I was talking about.
18:34Yeah.
18:35They're really hungry, you can tell.
18:38I feel like I'm at a petting zoo or something.
18:41Oh yeah, there we go.
18:42Time for me to actually get some food, I think.
18:45Ah!
18:47Back on the trail, it wasn't long before we found reason to stop again.
18:51Ah, this is for roof, not for the fire, you know?
18:55Roof, yeah, yeah, to build a home.
18:57So when they build the homes, they really use all local material.
19:00Most of them, they use local materials.
19:02So there's no store or shop where you can go and just buy wood and buy these things?
19:08No, you can buy it yourself.
19:10In the mountains?
19:11Yeah, in the mountains.
19:12Mm-hmm.
19:13What about cutting down a tree?
19:14Is this not allowed?
19:15Ah, it's not allowed, but...
19:17Does it happen sometimes?
19:18Yeah.
19:19Most of the time.
19:20Let me see how heavy the wood is.
19:23Oh!
19:29We just ran into these villagers along the path.
19:31We're going up, they're coming down, and they're bringing this huge piece of wood down to the village to use as part of roofing.
19:38And I just thought I'd hold onto it for them for a little while.
19:42Hey, Abraham.
19:43I'll bring the wood down if they make lunch forms.
19:46Sure.
19:47Can you tell me how it is there?
19:49Hello.
19:50Yeah?
19:55When you finish, there is something else to do.
19:57Oh, there's more work?
19:58There's more work for you.
19:59Yeah yeah.
20:00I can be the village handyman.
20:01THANKS.
20:05All right.
20:06But they look happier.
20:07Yeah, everyone's happy.
20:08Bye-bye.
20:09Bye-bye.
20:12As we made our way higher towards the pass, we left the villages far below, and the views of the surrounding mountains just got better and better.
20:33So, is this the high pass here?
20:35Yeah.
20:36Yeah?
20:37Oh, easy with it.
20:38We're heading to Azadna Valley.
20:41And we're staying with the local family tonight?
20:43Yes, we're staying with the local family.
20:45And they'll have good tea?
20:46Of course, good tea and good tagine.
20:48All right.
20:49Well, let's go check it out.
20:50Let's go.
20:52Day one.
20:53Day one, and I'm blown away by the mountain panoramas we're walking through.
20:57The presence of people hardly disturbing these landscapes.
21:03Sometimes you have to look twice to discover the small sediments we passed.
21:07They blend into their surroundings so well.
21:10You walk on these paths, village to village, you're essentially trekking on ancient trading routes that people have been walking back and forth on for centuries.
21:21Who's shared these paths and what people and what goods were they carrying?
21:26Who were they?
21:27All these kinds of ideas start to bottle up in your brain as you're walking one foot over the next over a high pass.
21:35As the descent begins to take its toll on my knees, Abraham said we would pay a visit to some of his friends in the village below.
21:44Tea break?
21:45Yes.
21:46Okay, let's do it.
21:47Oh, this is exactly what I needed.
21:51A little tea break.
21:53It's a really beautiful setting.
21:54The beauty of the place makes you forget about the pain.
21:58The beauty of the place makes you forget about the pain.
22:00Yeah.
22:01And are these your family friends?
22:05Yes, I've known them for a long time, yes.
22:07So what kind of tea are we going to be having today?
22:10I think mint tea.
22:11Mint tea?
22:12Mint tea.
22:13I will show you how to make your tea.
22:14Okay.
22:15Tea, and mint tea specifically, is a local delicacy of the Berber people.
22:20The tea leaves are steeped and poured out several times before the tea master declares the tea ready.
22:26Sugar is added, and then more sugar is added, and then a little more sugar.
22:31So the final drink is a sweet one.
22:33Cheers.
22:34Mint tea.
22:35Berber whiskey.
22:36Okay, great.
22:38Oh yeah.
22:41It's nice.
22:42It's very nice.
22:43It's very nice.
22:44You can taste the sugar though.
22:46Tea without sugar for us, it's not tea.
22:49It's not tea.
22:50With bread, of course.
22:51Oh my God.
22:52That's a big one.
22:53So do you eat the whole piece?
22:54It depends how hungry you are.
22:56That one's for you?
22:58Thank you very much.
22:59And then with the olive oil, that's it.
23:02And of course, bismillah.
23:05We say bismillah.
23:06Bismillah.
23:07Good God, you know.
23:08How is it?
23:11It's good.
23:12It's really good olive oil.
23:14It's a local olive oil.
23:16I played olive oil and mint tea.
23:18That's the best.
23:19It's the best.
23:20What a privilege to be getting a window into this world,
23:24the Berber world here.
23:26To be able to drink some tea, chat with friends,
23:29and enjoy the incredible mountain atmosphere.
23:35Oh, it's really nice.
23:37Thank you.
23:38It was time to take our leave.
23:39We still had to make it to our guest house before dark.
23:42They say that trekking through the Atlas Mountains is one of the most unique trekking experiences you can have.
24:02Because every single valley is completely different from the last.
24:06In the Atlas Mountains, there's just villages in every valley.
24:09It's well inhabited.
24:11When you actually arrive in the villages, they're full of life and full of color.
24:15It's been kind of fun at the end of a long day.
24:17You're just exhausted and tired.
24:19And you enter this village and you have all these faces just popping out of the woodwork.
24:24You know, curious onlookers trying to figure out, you know, who you are, who you might be, where you've come from.
24:38It was a long day.
24:40The daylight was fading as we finally reached our village.
24:43And I was very glad to have arrived safely.
24:49Day one is finally complete.
24:51We're going to be crashing at this family guest house where they've got hot food and hot tea inside.
24:58And I need a bit of both.
24:59Today was a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be.
25:01And tomorrow, we're going straight up a mountain.
25:06I'm excited about our next few days of trekking.
25:08We're going to be moving out of the villages, seeing less people as we head higher up into the mountains.
25:14The altitude of the pass that we're going to climb tomorrow, it's 2,700 meters.
25:21So day after day, we try to get higher and higher.
25:25He will suffer a little bit, that's for sure.
25:28But he will be okay.
25:33As night fell over the village, and after a good meal, Ibrahim led me to pay a few social calls to his friends in the neighborhood.
25:39We're going to have a tea with this family.
25:42Okay, so these are some friends of yours?
25:44Yes, I know them for a long time, yes.
25:45Let's go in and get some tea.
25:46Yeah, welcome.
25:47Watch your head.
25:48This is quite, it's not for tall people.
25:49Okay, not for tall people.
25:50Oh, wow.
25:51It's very nice.
25:52You're welcome.
25:53And warm.
25:54Yeah.
25:55So we sit?
25:56Yes.
25:57Salaam.
25:58Dalaam.
25:59Dalaam, thank you for inviting us for some tea.
26:11You make a laugh away in this evening.
26:13This is a big blanket, yeah?
26:15The old clothes that you don't use, they use them in a carpet like this, yeah, made by hand.
26:20There is no machine, nothing.
26:21Really?
26:22So everything is recycled?
26:23Yes.
26:24If there is one family making a carpet in the village, most of the ladies, they go and
26:31Help, you know?
26:32Yeah.
26:33And when they finish with this lady, they move to another one.
26:35The community makes everything.
26:37Yeah, like one family.
26:38That's beautiful.
26:39They help each other.
26:40Yeah.
26:41Yeah.
26:42I love how formal everything is.
26:43You can see, like, he has a lot of pride in making good tea.
26:47Yeah.
26:48Yeah.
26:49So you know how many times we drink tea a day?
26:51For every meal, you know?
26:52Yeah yeah.
26:53Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
26:55So it's very important.
26:58Thank you, Hassan, for inviting us for some tea.
27:01Thank you.
27:02And his son?
27:03His son?
27:04What's his son's name?
27:05Mohamed.
27:06Mohamed.
27:07When Mohamed gets older, what does he want the village to be like?
27:16Do you know Casablanca?
27:19I know Casablanca.
27:20He wants this village to be like Casablanca in the future.
27:23Like a big city?
27:24Yeah?
27:25With millions of people?
27:26Yeah.
27:27Lots of noise?
27:28Yeah.
27:29That's ambitious.
27:30Casablanca is like maybe the biggest city?
27:32The biggest in Morocco, yeah.
27:33Throughout Morocco.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Okay, so we're going to bring Casablanca to the Atlas Mountains.
27:39And it's on the ocean.
27:40Yes.
27:41But here we have the mountains.
27:44Meeting these locals with their warm hospitality gave me a real taste of what lives were being lived out here in the mountains.
27:51But it was soon time to say farewell and give our weary bodies some rest.
27:56Daylight came with a chill in the air and I woke up feeling quite rough.
28:09As we set off, my muscles and stomach were aching.
28:12But I thought the best remedy was to get moving.
28:28That morning, the village was very quiet, with just a few kids and craftsmen to be seen.
28:39Seeing this man at work reminds me that here, deep in the mountains, this whole village was made by hand.
28:58We started our day just going up this huge, huge high pass.
29:20For about four hours we just went right up the side of a mountain.
29:23And I just had nothing.
29:25Just nothing to give.
29:26No gas in the tank.
29:27Just couldn't get myself going into that next gear.
29:31And it was really challenging.
29:33I really felt just destitute.
29:35Just empty.
29:36The weather's starting to close in all around us.
29:52It's been cloudy all morning.
29:54And over my shoulder, there's some rain coming down in the mountains.
29:58The next range over.
30:00It's very cold.
30:02And hopefully, that rough weather won't end up on top of us anytime soon.
30:18We've been walking through such idyllic scenes, but I could barely enjoy them.
30:22I was hurting pretty bad until we stopped for lunch.
30:37Oh, that's good.
30:39Really good.
30:41Just been behind everyone today.
30:43Behind the guides, behind the crew.
30:45Haven't really found my mojo.
30:47Trekking out here in the mountains, it does really require your A-game every day.
30:53And if there's a chink in your armor, if you've got a bit of an off stomach,
30:57or a bit of a headache, or you didn't sleep well,
30:59it really takes a lot out of you.
31:06About halfway through our journey through the Atlas Mountains,
31:09the first half of our journey has kind of encompassed traveling from Berber village to Berber village.
31:16Now our journey is starting to shift a little bit.
31:18We're getting higher up into the mountains.
31:20We're leaving the villages behind.
31:22And the goal of the second half of our journey
31:24is to make a successful summit attempt at Tubko,
31:28which is the highest mountain here in Morocco.
31:30Today we've seen more water than we have on this entire trek so far.
31:39Making our way up towards these peaks,
31:41we see more and more of the snow melt waters,
31:44so vital to life in these parts.
31:47The lack of snow this year doesn't bode well for the summer months to come.
31:51Although the lunch had restored me somewhat, the higher we trekked, the colder it became.
32:03My whole body just shut down almost.
32:06And the last stretch up here to this beautiful little guest house
32:10has been really challenging and difficult.
32:13When we leave here where I am at the moment,
32:16we're going to be going up over those snow-capped mountains behind me.
32:19And the guys have been kind of warning us,
32:21saying that tomorrow's definitely going to be the toughest, toughest day.
32:24And because I was suffering so much today,
32:26I think some of them might have been a little bit worried,
32:28wondering if I'll be able to make it at all.
32:31Hopefully I can get a good rest this evening,
32:33eat a decent hot dinner and put their worries to rest
32:36and kind of get ready for war tomorrow.
32:44Tonight's going to be very special.
32:45Our guides and our host here in this kind of small,
32:48summer camp, they're actually barbecuing a goat for us.
32:53And it's kind of a feast for them.
32:55It's a really special thing to slaughter a goat.
32:57It shows great honor for their guests
33:00and we're very honored to be their guests tonight
33:02and they're really all excited.
33:05and we're very excited to be here.
33:06Okay, this is the oven.
33:08It's built specially for the goats.
33:10We wait a little bit,
33:11we wait for the fire to disappear,
33:13Then we put the goat inside.
33:15After that, we will put this stone,
33:18We will cover it.
33:19then the soil on top.
33:20We waited for two hours.
33:22then the goat is ready to eat.
33:25As night fell, our anticipation rose,
33:40wondering how this meal would emerge
33:42from its homemade oven.
33:44And after a long day's trekking,
33:46our appetite needed no encouragement.
33:48It's really tasty, yes.
33:51It's really nice.
33:52Okay.
33:53No spices, nothing on this.
33:54No spices, nothing?
33:55No.
33:56If you want to show your happiness for your guests,
34:00this is what you cook for them.
34:02So thank you very much.
34:03This smells so good.
34:05So good.
34:06You can just rip it apart.
34:09It's just hilarious, really.
34:11to be up here in the Atlas Mountains,
34:13to have a goat prepared for us
34:15in this traditional fashion,
34:17than to have this wonderful host
34:19Rip that goat to pieces
34:21and share it with all of us.
34:23with my good buddy Abraham.
34:25It's really fantastic.
34:27Looking forward to digging in.
34:29Oh, here goes the rip tape.
34:31In Canada, when you eat at a restaurant,
34:34You never see this part.
34:41This is unbelievable.
34:47It's really good, actually.
34:49Okay, cheers.
34:58Beautiful.
34:59Melt in your mouth.
35:01Cooked to perfection.
35:03When you eat the skin, it's really nice.
35:08It's lovely.
35:10Enjoy your food.
35:11Enjoy your food.
35:12Yeah.
35:13That's all we need.
35:14They say the simple life is a happy life,
35:16and sharing time and a meal with these people,
35:19a feeling of ease and warmth surrounded us.
35:22I like the mountains.
35:24Yeah?
35:25Yeah.
35:26I like it, I like it.
35:27I like it for myself.
35:28I like it.
35:29For me, too.
35:31I go from the mountain,
35:33sleeping outside.
35:35For me, it's easy.
35:37Calm, calm.
35:39No noise.
35:40Yeah.
35:41Yeah.
35:42My father?
35:43Yeah.
35:44One hundred and four years.
35:45One hundred?
35:46Oven.
35:47One hundred and four.
35:48Yeah.
35:49Now?
35:50Now.
35:51Really?
35:52Yeah.
35:53My mother?
35:54Ninety-nine.
35:55Ninety-nine?
35:56Yeah.
35:57Do you like the mountains?
36:01I love the mountains.
36:02Yeah.
36:03It seemed we'd arrived at a good place.
36:05I was feeling revived by the generous meal our hosts had laid on for us.
36:10And after the meal, the mood was so good that we were treated to an impromptu musical jam,
36:15with pots, pans, and containers used as makeshift drums.
36:27We usually use drums, you know?
36:29This is traditional Berber music.
36:31Traditional Berber music.
36:33To form girls on one side, boys on the other side, so they're like queens, you know?
36:39Yeah.
36:40They say something and the girls, they respond as girls as well.
36:45Yeah, so...
36:46But it's beautiful.
36:48It's a great finish to a great day, yeah.
36:52Perfect.
36:53Yeah, man.
36:54Step well.
36:55See you tomorrow.
36:56Okay, next time, inshallah.
37:12How are you feeling?
37:13Good.
37:14Yeah, are you okay?
37:15Very good.
37:16You?
37:17This is a big day.
37:18Yeah, we go into 3600 meters.
37:19You will see Azadna Valley from the top.
37:21It's a quite nice view.
37:23Will we see Tupka?
37:24Yes.
37:25Really?
37:26You will see the summit of Tupka, yeah.
37:27Looks close.
37:28Yeah?
37:29But you still have to go down to get it.
37:30Okay.
37:31Don't worry.
37:32Let's get moving.
37:33Today, the climb begins with a steep walk through a rocky meadow above our homestay towards the white peaks that surround us.
37:47The good meal and hospitality last night had sorted me out.
37:54I felt full of energy and I could take in the beauty of these dramatic peaks as the morning light slid over them.
38:01is now a cave at a deep dive here.
38:04It's so cold.
38:05It's beautiful.
38:06It's spaceships.
38:07Once upon a time by the sea.
38:08We have to keep going.
38:09Come on.
38:10We're going.
38:11Yeah, the moon.
38:12We're going to be able to notice a half a day.
38:13Is this right?
38:14A young mountain.
38:15We're going to be able to settle down.
38:16We're going to be able to settle down.
38:17Subtitling by Radio-Canada
38:47We've been following this river now for two days, and this is where it all starts, right here, this waterfall.
38:53And now we're going to go straight up the side of a mountain.
38:56We're getting there, inch by inch.
39:05And then the climbing became ruthless, endless switchbacks as we inch our way higher and higher.
39:17As we climbed higher still, Ibrahim told me that this high pass was a very good test and acclimatization for tube call.
39:26And as we rose high above the surrounding desert, we finally laid eyes on the highest mountain in North Africa.
39:35Earth-shattering morning, a really tough uphill, lots of switchbacks, feeling hopeless, feeling endless.
39:45But now we've just reached this high pass, 3,600 meters above sea level.
39:50And over my shoulder is tube call, the highest mountain in Morocco and the mountain that we should be summiting tomorrow if all goes well.
39:59And as they say in the Atlas Mountains, Inshallah, if God wills, we'll be at the top tomorrow afternoon.
40:06Do you think you can get there?
40:08If you can get there, I can get there.
40:09Okay.
40:10We're a team, right?
40:13Well done, yes, of course.
40:14Do you have any more goats?
40:16There's a goat waiting for you.
40:19Let's keep going.
40:22From the high pass, we looked down into the valley below and we could see the tube call base camp,
40:27where we would stay the night before making a summit attempt early the next morning.
40:40We found base camp a lively hub of activity.
40:53Many other climbers had arrived and were also preparing to make their summit attempt.
41:02Tube call is a pretty famous trek to do for local Moroccan people.
41:07Obviously, we've taken a bit of a longer route.
41:09and we've done a five-day trek through Berber villages in order to get here.
41:14So our energy level is a bit depleted, but our spirits are high
41:17because tomorrow morning we're going to be up at 5 a.m. making our way to the summit.
41:24Now it's the serious climb.
41:26Now it's the serious climb.
41:27The villages and the valleys are finished.
41:30Now we're going to head to Tube call.
41:31Do you think we'll be successful in our Tube call?
41:34I always say that if you climbed Aglazim, for sure, if there is no surprises, of course,
41:43for sure you will get to the summit.
41:45Because I found Aglazim a little bit harder than going up to the summit of Tube call.
41:52So, inshallah, you will make it up to the top.
41:55I will be with you until the end.
41:57I will take you to the top and back to Imli.
42:00It's about 5.30 in the morning.
42:15It's a pitch blackout.
42:16And today, right now, we're going to begin our summit attempt for Tube call mountain.
42:22I'm pretty pumped.
42:24It's freezing, but hopefully when we get on the trail,
42:26our bodies will warm up and we'll make a good day of it.
42:29Any last-minute safety tips before we go up?
42:32Okay, walk slowly, short steps, slow and steady wins the race.
42:39Let's go.
42:40Let's do it.
42:44It was pretty uncomfortable right from the start.
42:47The first third of the journey, we were doing a lot of scrambling and a lot of light climbing,
42:51and there was a lot of snow and ice, and it led to a lot of kind of uncomfortable situations,
42:56slipping around a little bit, and of course, all this is happening in the dark.
42:59It's about 6.30 in the morning, and we're making our ascent up to Tube call,
43:16and the sun is finally now just starting to come out.
43:21Absolutely beautiful.
43:23Still a long way to go.
43:25I don't know.
43:25I don't know.
43:26I don't know.
43:27I don't know.
43:28I don't know.
43:29I don't know.
43:30I don't know.
43:31I don't know.
43:32I don't know.
43:33I don't know.
43:34I don't know.
43:35I don't know.
43:36I don't know.
43:37I don't know.
43:38I don't know.
43:39I don't know.
43:40I don't know.
43:41I don't know.
43:42I don't know.
43:43I don't know.
43:44I don't know.
43:45I don't know.
44:46As we continue up through the ice field, this incredible wind just started coming down on us, ripping through all of my clothing and doing things very, very difficult.
44:55That was very, very hard, and we haven't even reached the summit yet.
45:17A little bit further to go.
45:23We're just kicking up.
45:25It's getting pretty cold, maybe a little dangerous.
45:29We're almost there.
45:30But despite the wind and the physical discomfort, the views out in the surrounding lowlands were jaw-dropping, the relief of the terrain revealed by the early-day sunlight casting its long shadows.
45:54But at this altitude, the wind was dangerous.
46:03This was no place to hang around, and we kept on pushing for the summit.
46:07Just a few more feet, we'll be at the roof of Morocco.
46:21We were almost there.
46:34Just a few more meters of barren rock to scramble up.
46:38This was our summit moment.
46:40It was so windy that I was almost being pushed off balance.
46:42We made it to the top of Tumcum Mountain, the roof of Morocco.
47:09Standing there, the wind was so strong, I had to hold on to the summit marker for support.
47:17The views, however, were spectacular.
47:20Other successful climbers surrounded us.
47:22We made it to the top of Tumcum Mountain, the roof of North Africa, the highest mountain in all of Morocco.
47:40It's really cold, and it's really windy.
47:43So now we're going down fast.
47:45That really pushed me right to my limits.
48:07It is a small mountain, but it is a tough trek.
48:11And, man, there were times this morning going up Tupco where I didn't know if I was going to make it.
48:16And then to finish this wonderful journey in the Atlas Mountains with a successful summit, which is just icing on the cake.
48:27We've just had the most wonderful week here.
48:31And getting a chance to meet people like Abraham and through him and his relationships, this whole region has now become accessible to us.
48:43And it's amazing where you can go when you just take one step at a time and how far you can get on your own two feet.
48:50I feel happy first because we get to the top.
48:54And after that, a little bit sad because you're leaving.
48:58That's it.
48:58I wish I could spend more time in the Atlas Mountains.
49:01Inshallah, you come back and we do longer breaks.
49:05There's many options you can do, not only this one.
49:09So you come back with your family, we do another one.
49:14You promise?
49:15Inshallah, you will find me waiting for you.
49:17I like this place, man.
49:19I want to come back.
49:21It's really, really beautiful.
49:23Atlas Mountains are first class.
49:25People here, brilliant.
49:32But man, you know, Tupkal is a tough, tough mountain.
49:36It's an extreme trek.
49:38Maybe I can come back with my kids and my wife.
