00:42Reading Rainbow
01:00Hi there
01:07Or as we say in Italian
01:10Buongiorno, buongiorno, buongiorno, come stai?
01:13Well, I hope you're hungry
01:15Because today's show is all about
01:17One of the world's most popular foods
01:19Pizza
01:20You know, Americans eat over 8 billion
01:23Slices of it a year
01:24Excuse me
01:28Hello
01:30Hi, Stephanie
01:32No, no, no, I was just getting ready for tonight
01:35Uh-huh
01:36Your cousin's in town
01:38Well, bring him along
01:41No
01:43No, no, no, I'm sure
01:44Uh-huh
01:45It's okay, yeah
01:46Alrighty
01:48I'll see you later then
01:50Bye-bye
01:51That was my friend Stephanie
01:55She's coming over for pizza tonight
01:57And I thought
01:57Rather than ordering out from a pizzeria
02:00I'd surprise her
02:01And make it myself
02:02So
02:04As any great pizza lover will tell you
02:07You can't make a great pizza
02:10Without a great crust
02:12And the secret to that crust
02:13Is in here
02:15Yeast
02:21It's a tiny little fungus
02:24And you wouldn't know by looking at it
02:26But these little critters
02:28Are alive
02:30To get the yeast started
02:34You pour it into a small bowl of warm water
02:37And stir it all up
02:38Now, add this yeast mixture
02:41To some more water
02:42Pour it all into the flour
02:45And mix it with a spoon
02:46Until it becomes dough
02:48Now comes the fun part
02:52You just press out the dough
02:54And fold again and again
02:56This is called kneading
02:58Here it is
03:02Now, I know it doesn't look big enough
03:04For a party-sized pizza
03:06But don't worry
03:06The yeast inside is still working
03:09We just need to cover it for a while
03:12To keep it warm
03:14There
03:15In a little while
03:17You won't believe what happens
03:20In the meantime
03:22Here's a story about a whole family
03:24That's in the pizza-making business
03:27They say
03:28If you want the best pizza in town
03:30Just go to Little Nino's Pizzeria
03:34Little Nino's Pizzeria
03:41By Karen Barber
03:44Read by Josh Savion
03:47My dad, Nino
03:58Makes the best pizza in the world
04:01I'm his best helper
04:07I help knead the pizza dough
04:11I help stir the pizza sauce
04:19And I help grate the cheese
04:28Mmm, Nino makes the best pizza
04:37I love coming to eat here
04:40Oh, this tastes delicious
04:42Mmm-hmm
04:44I love pepperoni
04:46Make my mushroom
04:49When the customers are finished
04:50I know how to pick up their plates
04:53And carry out the dirty dishes
04:55I help give the extra pizzas
05:01To hungry people in the alley
05:03Who have no homes
05:04What a treat
05:07Thanks
05:08And
05:11I help my dad serve our pizza pies
05:14People come from all over town
05:18To eat at Little Nino's
05:19They wait in long lines
05:21Because our restaurant is so small
05:23One night
05:28A man came to see my dad
05:30After the last pizza
05:31What did he want?
05:35That night
05:36My dad told my mom
05:38We would be making
05:39Lots more money now
05:40The next day
05:43My dad locked up Little Nino's
05:46Soon, he opened a big, fancy, expensive restaurant
05:53He called it Big Nino
05:57How tasty
06:00Everything is simply divine
06:03I tried to help in the dining room
06:06But the waiters tripped over me
06:08And spilled a lot of food
06:10Mama Mia
06:12Watch out for the flying of pizza
06:15I tried to help in the kitchen
06:18But Francois, the chef
06:20Pushed me away
06:21I asked my dad how he could help
06:25But he was too busy to even notice me
06:28No matter how I tried to be helpful
06:31I was always in the way
06:33So
06:35I went home
06:37I miss Little Nino's
06:41But then
06:46One night
06:47My dad came home from Big Nino
06:49Extra tired
06:50He said
06:51I miss cutting tomatoes
06:53And chopping onions
06:54And kneading dough
06:55I'm tired of so much paperwork and money talking
06:58He shouted
06:59I want
07:00I want to make a pizza
07:02And then he looked at me
07:09Tony
07:10My best helper
07:12So the next day
07:15We went back to Little Nino's
07:18Soon, we reopened it
07:21And the man from Big Nino
07:23Got a new person to be in charge there
07:25I wouldn't miss this for the world
07:27My dad Nino
07:28Still makes the best pizza in the world
07:31But he changed the name of our restaurant
07:35Little Tony's
07:38Yeah
07:39Remember that little ball of dough
07:53Well
07:54Look at it now
07:56The yeast blew it up like a balloon
07:59Now watch this
08:01Punch out a little of the extra air
08:04And then
08:06Flatten it out
08:08Just a little
08:10Around the edge
08:11Now
08:12There are several ways to flatten out dough
08:14You can use a rolling pin
08:16Or
08:17You can try this
08:18Are you ready?
08:21Okay
08:22Now
08:26I've got to make the biggest pizza possible
08:29Because
08:30When it comes to pizza
08:32You've got to make sure you have enough for everyone
08:34I can eat a lot of pizza
08:37I love pizza
08:38How about you?
08:41Well like normally
08:42Naturally
08:43I would only want to eat about three slices
08:45One
08:46Six slices
08:48Two
08:50About ten slices
08:52I could eat about five boxes
08:55I could consume a couple of hundred pieces
08:58Four
08:59A hundred pieces
09:01About eight hundred slices
09:02Six hundred elephants full
09:05Forty-five million
09:06Nine hundred
09:07Twenty-five thousand
09:08Seven hundred and seventy-seven
09:09Pizzas
09:10Pies
09:11Well
09:13The crust
09:14Is fin-
09:15Is finished
09:17Hello
09:19Hi Steph
09:21What's up?
09:23Your cousin wants to bring his high school basketball team
09:27All five of them
09:29Well
09:29Yeah sure
09:30Bring them
09:31Okay
09:32See you at 6.30
09:33Bye-bye
09:35Well
09:37I better make this
09:38Bigger
09:39But that's no problem
09:42Just
09:43Make it bigger
09:45That's all
09:46Just
09:48Make it bigger
09:49Ooh
09:49Okay
09:53Bigger
09:54Bigger
09:55Ooh
09:56Ouch
09:58Well that'll never do
10:00Um
10:02Better start all over
10:03That's it
10:04Start all over
10:05In fact
10:06I'll double the recipe
10:08You know
10:10You gotta be very patient
10:13When making a perfect pizza
10:14So
10:16While I turn this into a jumbo pie
10:19Here's another example
10:20Of how practice
10:22Makes perfect
10:23Now
10:26You and I
10:27Won't ever practice
10:28Making fireworks
10:29But this family
10:30Certainly has
10:32Learning how to make fireworks
10:36Doesn't happen overnight
10:37It takes years and years
10:38Of experience
10:39I'm Phil Grucci
10:41I'm a fifth generation member
10:42Of the Grucci family
10:43And when we do
10:44Large fireworks programs
10:46We don't always do it on land
10:47We bring them out on barges
10:49And float the barges
10:50Out to the middle of a river
10:51And that becomes our stage
10:53What we're doing now
10:55Is starting to set up
10:56The barges
10:57For a mammoth fireworks program
10:58That we'll be doing
10:59This weekend
10:59The first job
11:02That we have to do
11:02When we get onto the barge
11:03Is put our pipes in
11:05Once we load our pipes
11:06Into the boxes
11:07We have to run a wire
11:08To each one of the pipes
11:09That wire is gonna be
11:11Connected to a firework
11:13And this is
11:14What a firework looks like
11:15We call them shells
11:17The shell has to go
11:19All the way down
11:20To the bottom of the pipe
11:21In order for it
11:21To function effectively
11:22When we're handling
11:24The firework pieces
11:25We handle them
11:26Very, very gently
11:27Like it's an egg
11:28We don't wanna break
11:29The firework
11:29And we handle it
11:30Very carefully
11:31It's never dropped
11:32And it's never mishandled
11:33If you've ever wondered
11:36What a firework is made out of
11:38Let me show you
11:38This is one of the many
11:40Fireworks that we're using
11:41On the barges
11:41This firework is made
11:43With a cardboard
11:44Hand-rolled casing
11:45And the casing
11:47Is filled with small balls
11:49That we call stars
11:50The stars are the magic
11:51Of the fireworks
11:52The stars are chemically made
11:54To produce different colors
11:56And different patterns
11:56They're very light
11:58They're very soft
11:59And they're round
12:00As you can see
12:01One of the things
12:06That I love so much
12:07About this job
12:08Is being able to work
12:09So closely with my family
12:10Being that we are
12:11A family company
12:12A family business
12:13Donna, my aunt
12:15Is the vice president
12:16Of fireworks by Gucci
12:17Donna selects a lot
12:18Of the music
12:18That you might hear
12:19When you see
12:20Our fireworks displays
12:21And then there's Cricket
12:23My cousin
12:23He's one of our
12:24Chief technicians
12:25That works
12:25And keeps everything
12:26Flowing and working
12:27Out here on site
12:28My grandmother is
12:31The glue of our family
12:32She is the backbone
12:34Keeping everybody together
12:35As well as teaching us
12:37The importance of safety
12:38With fireworks
12:38Looks good
12:39Mother nature's on our side
12:40Thank God for that
12:41Good thing you ordered it
12:42Yeah, I told you
12:44We've got to have nice weather
12:45The person that's
12:46Most responsible
12:46For teaching me
12:47What I know about fireworks
12:48Is my grandfather
12:49The older generation
12:51Teaching the younger generation
12:52Was important
12:54In the success of my family
12:55When we were children
12:56Growing up
12:57The one thing
12:59That I learned
13:00From my dad
13:01Was to respect fireworks
13:03And my brothers and myself
13:05Now are teaching our children
13:07The same thing
13:07To respect them
13:09Fireworks are dangerous
13:11This is what we call
13:13A world class show
13:14It's a very, very
13:15Large scale production
13:16It didn't always used
13:18To be that way
13:19We used to use
13:20A lot of pinwheels
13:21And American flags
13:22But today's shows
13:23Have so many more people
13:25That come
13:25That we have to put
13:26A lot way up in the air
13:27There we are
13:32We're going to have lunch
13:32Now guys
13:33What makes this
13:34All so much fun
13:36Is the teamwork
13:37That goes into it
13:38It's just such a rewarding
13:40Feeling
13:41To see all of us
13:43Work together
13:43For so many hours
13:44And to be able
13:45To produce such beauty
13:47It's a very warm
13:49Rewarding feeling
13:50Oh gosh
13:55But what happens
13:56If it rains
13:57On the night
13:57Of the big show
13:58The marina's off there
14:00Everything is
14:01Tight by line
14:02On the barges
14:03In spite of everything
14:06The show is going to go on
14:08Regardless of the weather
14:10Oh here they come
14:11Look
14:12Here comes the
14:13Here comes the tug now
14:14Yeah they may be on this
14:16Right now
14:17I hope this is my grandson
14:20Coming in now
14:20My job is to produce
14:26The firework show
14:27For the river
14:28There's a tremendous
14:29Amount of pressure
14:30On myself
14:31And the rest of the family
14:32To make all of these
14:33Fireworks go off
14:35At the same time
14:35Right now
14:36I'm very nervous
14:37With the weather
14:38These are the breaks
14:40Of our profession
14:41We can't control
14:42Mother nature
14:42It's going to happen
14:44Mother nature's
14:45Working a little bit
14:46With us
14:46Stand by
14:47Two to you
14:48Pappy
14:48Three
14:49Two

15:46I'm very, very happy.
16:07Second to be married, that was the best experience of my life.
16:09Okay, this ought to be big enough to feed a high school basketball team.
16:19Now, here comes my favorite part.
16:23Adding the sauce and the toppings.
16:29Hello?
16:31Yes, Stephanie, the coach can come too.
16:34Yes, okay. I'll see you later.
16:39Uh, you know, I should have asked Stephanie what the coach likes on his pizza.
16:43Everybody has their favorite toppings. What's yours?
16:47My favorite toppings are green peppers and onions with extra cheese.
16:53Mushrooms.
16:54Olives.
16:56Sausage.
16:57Garlic.
16:58Hot sauce.
17:00Mm.
17:00Pepperoni sausage and pickles.
17:04No, that wasn't it.
17:06Gumballs.
17:07Onions.
17:08Oysters.
17:11Candy bars.
17:13Another pizza.
17:16I guess the only way to top a pizza for everyone is with a little bit of everything.
17:22So, finally, I get to add the sauce.
17:27Here we go.
17:28A little bit of sauce.
17:30I love this part.
17:31This is great.
17:32A little sauce.
17:34Kind of slather it around there.
17:36And now for my pizza resistance.
17:55A little sauce.
18:01Perfecto.
18:02Bravo, bravo, bravo.
18:03Very good, very good.
18:04Molto bene, molto bene.
18:05Grazie.
18:06You know, the best thing about making pizza is that you can make it any way you want.
18:11And of course, eating it can be just as creative.
18:13And everyone has their own favorite style.
18:16What's your favorite style?
18:18You got to have style.
18:26You got to have pizzazz.
18:31It's a certain personality that every pizza lover has.
18:35So, when you share it with your friends and their manners seem to slip away.
18:42Well, it's okay.
18:44Because when you're eating the pizza, everybody eats a different way.
18:48When you pass around the slices and it gets a little messy and you're not sure what to do.
18:56Don't worry.
18:59Open up wide and let your style shine through.
19:03Let your pizza style shine on through.
19:07Okay.
19:11You know, I better get this thing cooked before everybody arrives.
19:15Here we go.
19:16Here we go.
19:30Mama mia.
19:32I can't believe this thing won't fit.
19:43I'm coming.
19:51Hello.
19:53Stephanie.
19:56How many more?
19:59Oh, wait a minute.
19:59Hang on.
20:00Hang on.
20:00Hang on.
20:03Well, looks like it's going to take me a little while to figure this out.
20:06But there's no need for you to go hungry.
20:08So, here are some books that will really satisfy your appetite.
20:13But you don't have to take my word for it.
20:16Hi.
20:17My name's Brooke Alexander.
20:19I have a poetry book of the most unusual kind.
20:22It's all about food.
20:24It's called Eats Poems by Arnold Adolf.
20:27The whole world is made up of a lot of different kinds of foods.
20:31Arnold Adolf thinks food is great.
20:34His poems have a catchy rhythm.
20:38In the poem about pizza, the dough seems to be the most important.
20:43But not to me.
20:44But not to me.
20:44I love the cheese.
20:48Chocolate, chocolate.
20:49I love chocolate.
20:50If you're crazy about food and have a wacky imagination, read Eats Poems.
20:57Hi, I'm Cameron.
20:59Have you ever wondered how food travels through your body?
21:03Well, in this book called What Happens to a Hamburger, you can find the answers to some
21:08of your questions.
21:09Digestion begins in your mouth.
21:13It starts when you chew your food and continues after you swallow it.
21:18It goes down a tube called your esophagus.
21:21Then it arrives in your stomach.
21:23When the food turns into a liquid, it's really yucky.
21:29I think you'll really be amazed when you discover how hard your stomach works.
21:34So the next time you eat something, think about what happens to a hamburger.
21:40Hey, you Colonel fans out there.
21:43Popcorn Colonels, that is.
21:45If you love popcorn the way I do, you'll eat this book right up.
21:49It's called the Popcorn Book.
21:52This book tells you lots of great facts and funny stories about popcorn.
21:58Did you know that popcorn was discovered by Native Americans?
22:03The Indians ate popcorn.
22:06They also wore it as jewelry.
22:08There's a funny folktale in the book.
22:11One summer in the Midwest, it was so hot and dry that the corn in the fields began to pop.
22:19It looked like a blizzard outside.
22:23I'm Kamali Minter, and popcorn isn't just good for the movies, it's also good for reading.
22:29So why don't you pop over to your library and pick up the popcorn book?
22:34Well, I finally solved my problem.
22:40And I'm very excited because this is going to be a great pizza party.
22:45All thanks to Sal's Emergency Pizza Delivery Service.
22:51Well, you know, I never got an opportunity to finish my pizza, but I'm going to try again soon.
22:56And the next time you're in the mood for some mouth-watering pizza, why don't you try making your own?
23:05Put three cups of flour into a large mixing bowl.
23:10Add a pinch of salt.
23:14Dissolve one package of yeast into two cups of warm water.
23:17And add this mixture to the flour.
23:23Mix it with a spoon until it becomes dough.
23:32Knead the dough for two to three minutes.
23:35Cover and set it aside to rise in a warm spot.
23:46After an hour, punch down the dough.
23:50And flatten it out.
23:54Start with the edges.
23:56And then, use your hands like the pros.
24:03Add sauce.
24:05Shredded cheese.
24:12And then, your favorite toppings.
24:19And finally, bake your pizza in a preheated oven at 500 degrees for 10 minutes.
24:26And, don't forget the most important thing of all.
24:30Make sure your pizza will fit in your oven.
