00:10:39It's like expressing beauty, color, excitement, drama.

00:10:53And this DJ was actually keeping this one part in the record on and on and on.
00:10:59And then the guy was on the microphone just doing that same stuff Muhammad Ali did.
00:11:07The rapper would say, you know what, he's good, but by the way, I'm kind of fly too and I'm all this and I'm all that.
00:11:15The girls would scream, the next emcee said, I have to outdo this person.
00:11:20And the only way to outdo somebody usually is by boasting or outboasting them or trying to insult them in a cool way.
00:11:27And that's where the battle started.
00:11:28When you first start now, it's, you know what I'm saying, it's more natural to just freestyle.
00:11:56Because that's how you start, you know, developing your own style.

00:19:41So I'm like, yeah, that is true.
00:19:44Cause while they were having a hip-hop scene in New York, we were having a gang scene.
00:19:49Due to the fact they called themselves a gang, people called this gangster rap.
00:19:53Violence is part of that lifestyle, so you have to rap about it.

00:20:17When you rap, basically you rap to another rapper.

00:22:22And because of the tempos and the mixture of the music, I think that music was more relevant to more black people inside the United States.
00:22:31We put in the dam, from block to block to scandalous town, from crooked cops to dope shops, all around.
00:22:38Shit, hot holes, the six holes, the strawberries, hoods, tight like whatnot, run like the military.
00:22:45Attitudes, don't even try it, take none.
00:22:48And the fact that you could do this, and sooner or later these records started selling, just saying whatever we wanted to say, it was great.
00:22:55It was like God came and said, here's something that you can do.
00:22:59Now, when we started, and when we signed our first contract in 1982, you can count how many rap groups had contracts, signed contracts with companies.
00:23:19And major record companies was not taking chances with rap music, it was the small independent companies that would give rappers a chance.
00:23:26After 1985, hip-hop and rap made a split.
00:23:30Graffiti art and breakdancing no longer became viable means of expressing this piece of the culture.
00:23:39Rap became the viable means of expressing this piece of the culture, and it was only because corporate America, NASA, deemed it important.
00:23:49Oh, we can make some money pressing up these records.

00:23:53Rap is big business now.
00:23:56Now, record companies aren't even concerned about the vinyl and stuff like that.
