00:00Hello and welcome, I'm Luis Fonan, one of the inventors of the captcha.
00:06More than 25 years ago, we set out to solve a seemingly simple problem.
00:11It was the year 2000, and the world wide web was growing fast.
00:15But as it grew, more people set out to take advantage of the openness that made the web so special.
00:20They created bots to send spam emails, attack websites, and even sculpt items on eBay.
00:26We needed a solution, a way to tell the bots from the humans.
00:31But what makes someone human? Is it our ability to love? To feel pain and mourn the loss of loved ones?
00:38We thought about it, and determined no. It's our ability to read squiggly letters.
00:44That's what makes us human. That's what makes us special.
00:47And so we created the very first captchas, and put them out into the world.
00:51Soon, they appeared everywhere. On forums, in chat rooms, before checking out.
00:56Countless human lifetimes have been spent solving these puzzles.
00:59Do I regret it? Sometimes. But I did what had to be done.
01:03Well, today I have good news. You passed. You are undeniably a human being.
01:09Made of flesh and blood. And so I'm granting you immunity from all captchas.
01:14You're free. No more ticking boxes. No more clicking traffic lights. Congratulations.
01:20Now go live. Live as only a human can.
