00:00was slightly crazy really captures her teenage emotions and stormy told me
00:09but for one of the country's biggest stores john lewis their christmas starts
00:15as soon as the last one ends what better way to celebrate hot weather than a bit of tinsel
00:23with exclusive access we'll get it professional with that stuff we've only got a certain window
00:28between the store closing and the store reopening we'll peek behind the curtain of this beloved
00:34british brand right here is oxford street to see how they get christmas ready at a certain point
00:42you haven't got much to stand on this tree is really cool from building their christmas shop
00:48one down so 61 to go all right to filming their famous christmas advert london being london
00:56sometimes pedestrians just don't stop anyway regardless of what you're asking them to do
01:00we'll be behind the scenes it's just a case of making it work now which is the usual problem
01:05with christmas lights front of house hi there good evening
01:10on the small screen i love it but it doesn't look like snow it looks like polystyrene
01:18and everything in between oh it looks amazing
01:22let's say that way first that way sir
01:35merry christmas
01:36there isn't a week goes past that me and my team don't think about christmas
01:50charlotte lock is customer director at john lewis
01:53i probably work up a couple of times in the night thinking have we thought about that have we thought
01:57about that it's august and after months of preparations she's on her way to the first day
02:03of filming part of this year's christmas advert campaign every year we think how do we do
02:09something a bit different a bit unexpected she's responsible for ensuring that this year's christmas
02:16advertising campaign is a success given the christmas ad has become almost iconic that's going to be no
02:24easy feat it's a little bit like holding the ming vase you don't want to be afraid of dropping it you
02:30want to be free to be creative and um try things take risks do things a little bit differently have a
02:37good day such is the importance and impact of the advert all sets are top secret
02:47it's so secret that most people working here don't even know what brand they're working for
02:52hey how's it going only a select few know everything so that's the schedule yeah frankie
02:59goodwin has been working towards this day for nine months john lewis christmas ad is probably the most
03:05famous advert i would argue in the world i mean it's a long long process we started in at the beginning
03:10of the year and we're here on set finally bringing it to life it's really exciting every single detail has
03:19to be considered and work with the brand you can't resent the pressure because that's what's created
03:24by something this exciting and this big that's something that everybody is interested in excited by
03:30today is the first time that charlotte will see the set and everything in place for the first advert of
03:36the festive season the jumper before filming starts she has to sign everything off
03:42this is obviously the color we've chosen i think probably the main thing is just how beautiful it's
03:49kind of popping yeah it's gorgeous it's gorgeous so this is the jumper the hero of the ad waiting to
03:57be gifted um we'll see it folded wrapped and then we'll see its life we've decided to take something that
04:04isn't an animal object but imbue it with life a future a role in people's lives make it special and of
04:11course communicate that that's all of that love is from the giver uh and in this case a mum giving a
04:18gift to her daughter she doesn't actually know she likes pink but then wears it loves it um and we
04:25we see its life over the decades so uh it should be very special yeah it looks good i think signed off
04:32and ready to go this 30-second ad will take three days to film and be released before the main christmas
04:39advert every bit of detail is scrutinized you've only got an audience's attention for a short amount
04:47of time jess ringshaw is in charge of production for the christmas campaign the jumper looks gorgeous
04:54i want one i think sometimes people can be dismissive about how much detail is needed to make these types
05:00of um adverts really effective but the reality is it creates a whole mood and a real sense of um connection
05:07for the audience into the into the ad if if all of those special details are really thought about
05:12yeah and on a project like this pressure comes from unlikely directions there's so much secrecy
05:19i can't tell my husband i can't tell my children you know i have a nine-year-old daughter she's
05:24desperate to know what christmas ad is going to be and obviously i can't talk to her about it so
05:27yeah everybody nags me all the time just any kind of little snippet and i just you know getting pretty
05:32good at keeping secrets in central london at the flagship shop on oxford street
05:42but this is all sold now deputy manager nadia hassan is in early it is the hottest day of the year but
05:49what better way to celebrate hot weather than a bit of tinsel
05:53today on the third floor it's out with the garden furniture hello guys we started painting already
06:04and the start of the build of this year's christmas shop a dedicated area on the third
06:09floor of the oxford street store for all things christmas so 24 hours ago this whole space was
06:18garden furniture this is going to be transformed into anything that you need to get your home
06:23christmas ready the biggest trading period of the year has just started over the next three months
06:31john lewis shops will welcome over 30 million visitors to cope with demand they employ an additional
06:382 000 people to get through the festive season hello sam everything on to plan this morning yes no
06:45problems or goods yeah being super flexible i'm so excited i could burst oh yeah have you had a
06:52sneaky peek yet yeah yes of course you have sam leahy is a team manager normally found in the home
06:58furnishings department spend them outwards but for the past 10 years has been in charge of the christmas
07:05shop i really love christmas it's my favorite time of the year it's my absolute favorite time i think
07:10the happiness amongst your customers the children come in smiling it's such a nice feeling we're very lucky
07:16one down soon 61 to go all right because that sounds mad to everybody else getting ready for
07:22christmas is mad busy let me calm down a little bit and then the next bit is getting us out of
07:26christmas so that's my two man busy season i'll grab that one it's lovely and thick
07:31maybe that that multi-colored one did you peek inside the other little skips as if i would
07:36while john lewis prides itself in being customer facing a lot of what goes on behind the scenes is top
07:48secret in yorkshire behind these walls designers and carpenters come together bringing to life
07:57seasonal store experiences could we roll it around and then just chop it off yeah james taylor from
08:05black's visuals is working on a major new installation sometimes when you work in july on christmas and
08:12it's 30 degrees outside which i know is rare here but um you're like how are we working on christmas but
08:18it is just as exciting john lewis have designed a new sustainable santa's grotto to install in two of
08:26its stores liverpool and london's oxford street everything that we do is designed bespoke and
08:32manufactured bespoke i wish it was just playing around with models there's a lot that goes into
08:38it which is why it takes almost a year for a campaign like this today a team from john lewis's
08:45visual merchandise department have come up to sign the project off so customers will come in this way
08:52be greeted by an elf so we're gonna have to fashion like a stage area for an elf in here lucy ashley
09:00has been overseeing the grotto design we have elves that will be stationed in every room children will
09:06be able to go in have their picture taken with santa they get a gift to take away it's just making sure
09:12that the children are having their moment with santa the design has sustainability at its core
09:25so it can be dismantled and reused for the next three years yeah so i think once you can picture
09:31the fact that there'll be like 20 little kids and their parents and families in here and they'll be
09:35like the hustle and bustle it's hoped that the grottoes will be a centerpiece for the shops
09:42so work in progress as you can tell from the drills on the floor but most importantly it'll be home to
09:48a very special guest for the weeks preceding christmas so this will be santa's room the tree will also be
09:55a bit more magical and actually have decorations on it we're just um threading them up so nothing is left
10:02a chance so we're still working on the artwork at the moment i think it needs to come out towards
10:09us more before it can be dismantled and transported to store every detail has to be just right so now
10:17we've mastered this part of it we'll get it professionally fixed up and then we can review it
10:22again yeah there's still a lot of work to do before it's ready for the big man to take his place
10:35on the other side of the country in liverpool
10:43brad keller's newfound fame is continuing to blow his mind
10:47since winning channel 4's the piano a competition to find the best amateur pianist he's been non-stop
10:54performing and recording his first album where we're from on our estate and stuff not many
11:01big things like this happens to the average person ever so the fact that it's happening to me it's
11:06i do wake up sometimes and just think it's actually happened john lewis goes to great lengths choosing
11:12emotive music and performers for their adverts they've asked brad to play the music for the first
11:21of their festive adverts the jumper for brad who spent most of his childhood growing up in care
11:29this has been something he always dreamt of but never believed it would become a reality
11:34i said someone one of the things i'd manifested was one day to do a john lewis christmas advert
11:44to capture the right mood and emotion brad plays the inspiring music on the piano
11:49alongside the cut pictures of the advert i remember as a kid watching some of the classic john lewis
11:56christmas adverts and it adds this feeling of christmas's getting here right away you just
12:02know that christmas is around the corner and then yeah i'd love to be a part of that feeling
12:09growing up in foster care wasn't easy for him and struggling at school didn't help until one day
12:15by chance he found the piano i knew from the second i touched the piano that i was never going to do
12:22anything different than music because i can't read music i like to take myself away mentally whenever i
12:28want to go and i know exactly what keys and what chords to press to take me there mentally
12:35it is very therapeutic it genuinely heals people if you're in a sad situation or if you're in a dark
12:41place just that one piece of music that means something to you can take your mind in a better place
12:47he's never had a lesson he can't read music but now he's playing the score for john lewis's first festive season advert
12:58coming up action we'll see how it's not just the advert that makes christmas at john lewis
13:20very very teenage strop she's got that down but what they're selling as they choose the things
13:30they hope we'll buy over the festive period you know we're selling over a thousand palatones a day
13:35merry christmas i mean
13:46oxford street is awake one of the great bazaars of the world is getting ready to open its door john lewis
13:54began its life in 1864 as a small draper's shop it's maintained the name of its founder ever since
14:01and still inhabits that very site on london's world famous oxford street it's just grown a bit
14:11christmas was as important then as it is now
14:16milan is home to one of john lewis's best sellers at christmas it's really important that we're
14:22bringing the best products the best quality and obviously the best taste uh to our assortments
14:28lisa cherry is in charge of purchasing all things festive today she's in italy to meet one of their
14:35oldest suppliers lazzaroni it's always great to come out meet the suppliers and yeah well it's always
14:44good to look good to check again on the flavor so we sell over a thousand units of panettone a day over
14:50the festive period it's become a bit synonymous with christmas and our customers really love it we're
14:55coming out to have a look at the assortment for christmas uh look at the flavors look at how our
15:01designs are appearing on the tin and complete the range she's come to meet luca lazzaroni whose
15:10family has been making panettone for over 300 years
15:17ciao lisa how are you very well welcome to sarong and your american panettone house
15:27it's here that lazzaroni panettone flavors are developed and tested before being rolled out on
15:33an industrial scale to the likes of john lewis this is the kitchen where it all happens this is our
15:41special laboratory let's call it like this pretty unique
15:46i mean it's amazing isn't it just makes you want to eat it i mean panettone has been a growing trend
15:52especially over the last 10 years um it's become a bit of a staple for people at christmas now
15:56but to make panettone properly takes time it's a crazy process i mean you need a lot of passion in
16:05order to do it because otherwise you go crazy
16:10panettone doesn't take long to cook about an hour it's what happens afterwards that makes it unique
16:18all these are good panettone look at the shape
16:21if you leave it at the air then they would start to collapse okay so the the trick is just to put
16:28immediately upside down so that they will be cooling with the weight bringing down but before lisa can
16:36sample for herself luca wants to show her just how unique the process is it's all set
16:44like other breads panettone rises naturally before baking so this is how we start from
16:50yeah this is how arrives under 12 hours and this is how it comes out uh the process so wow so it's
16:58sort of it's like quadruples in size it's alive and it grows literally you are feeding animals and then
17:07putting and relaxing at a certain temperature the problem is that being alive is not just uh how to
17:13say automatic how it grows they can be lazy so it takes more or don't do what you want or be much
17:19quicker so in the morning when we arrive sometimes we find it like this sometimes it's shorter
17:24sometimes it's much higher so it really depends day by day uh how it changes so lisa the honor to
17:31you to make the cut which is the most important uh part and i do it in a cross you said exactly the
17:37cross yes you cut it oh it's quite yes yes it's not simple though it'll be stronger a little bit
17:43stronger okay and then you put the butter exactly in the center so it can melt inside yeah okay perfect
17:52this is very nice so this is the the final stage which is nice you can see here also the cat because
17:59expanding and growing this uh this shape is is where originally was the cat and then we can we're ready
18:06to cut it because at this point we have to eat it so we definitely have to eat it okay so of course here
18:13we are with the final panettone oh it does it tastes like christmas well merry christmas i mean almost there
18:28it's not good enough just to stock shelves with nice things like panettone
18:32you have to get your brand out there and sell
18:38but john lewis shifted the direction of its christmas advertising campaign from selling to giving
18:46as portrayed in this 2011 advert a campaign that has since become a national talking point
18:54and almost as much a festive tradition as picking out a christmas tree
19:02this 2014 advert about an unlikely friendship between a boy and a penguin was viewed 29 million times
19:11created a shortage of toy penguins and helped propel in-store christmas sales by five percent
19:18the feel-good vibe that john lewis was putting out at christmas was getting bigger and bigger drawing
19:34superstars like elton john into its cast
19:37but with that comes expectations and pressure so there's an extraordinary amount of interest in
19:50john lewis christmas so we have to shroud it in secrecy so even the cast that we recruit to come and
19:58um act in our um adverts they don't know what brand it's for it's so important that we don't spoil the
20:04magic touch wood we've managed to do it every year thus far and hopefully this year will be no different
20:10with the first advert airing charlotte lock's attention is now fully focused on the main christmas
20:16advert and action believe it or not in the basement of john lewis we have what we refer to as the bunker
20:25which is a locked studio where we have all of our christmas materials laid down
20:29the main christmas advert is their most closely guarded secret
20:36and is months in the preparation and making so this is project golden quarter which is the code
20:42name for our christmas ad series this year's christmas ad is about the story of our main
20:49character sally who is looking for a gift for her sister she starts in john lewis it's last minute
20:55as she looks through and that kind of frenetic search for the perfect gift she enters this world
21:01of her memories and actually where she looks is back in time through those experiences with her sister
21:10through to there's this fabulous filmic moment where she's rushing down the stairs and then
21:16resolves onto an ice rink because we know that our memories aren't linear and the line resolves to the
21:21secret to finding the perfect gift is knowing where to look and of course where sally's looked is
21:26through her memories of growing up with her sister together
21:32with filming underway in bulgaria charlotte's checking in with the team on a key scene that
21:37needs signing off before they can move on hey frankie hi how are things on set really good we've
21:45literally just done the rain scene exciting so it's been amazing i want to show you that though
21:51because it's interesting because rain doesn't actually show up brilliantly on camera even even
21:57fake rain i just wanted to show you because actually we've got a very cold 14 year old way to be
22:03released and so there's a bit of urgency on this one okay let's have a look
22:10what is your problem doesn't even look good on you oh you always do this you always take my stuff
22:19i had to sit here and be okay with it very very teenage strop she's got that down
22:24honestly she absolutely nails teenage tantrum so fantastic performance she's a good actress
22:32um yeah i'm really happy to move on put a blanket around to give her a hot chocolate can't wait to
22:37see some more a successful advert is one thing but these days competition is rife appearance is
22:46everything good morning good morning good morning how's everyone today right we've got a lot to do i
22:50loving the stuff we've already done success has one judge and that's in sales you're frightening me
23:00that's why so much effort goes into building christmas at john lewis
23:08how are you getting on you winning only 1 000 more skips to go my angel
23:13it's mid-september and on the third floor the christmas shop is almost ready to open
23:19this is my fame so far two pieces in a pod what me and you yeah how are things going not long to
23:27go now just nine days the countdown has begun we've had all of the fixtures in we've had lots of stock
23:33that's arrived this is the most important crucial time for our business you always feel the pressure
23:40to want to make it look good for when we first open and customers are here very impressive yeah
23:45yeah this tree is really cool so sam's in charge she's got a really good plan in place it's got
23:51elephants all different textures so the big thing about textures at the moment today i'm going to try
23:56and get us around to this corner we're never always ready for it so it will always be a last minute
24:00tweaking the plan is for tomorrow to be on this side yeah how you getting on lee now i remember in march
24:07you promised you're going to help me with the cash desk so that's on your own yeah yeah yeah yeah
24:11you've got a very good memory haven't you coming up just make sure everything's lined up right now
24:18the oxford street shop gets 70 000 bulbs on its facade you haven't got much to stand on
24:24but no power it's just a case of making it work now which is the usual problem with christmas lights
24:37it's less than three weeks before the launch of the christmas advert so we'll look at a single that
24:52way yeah but we might come back slightly here the back of the flagship store on oxford street is being
24:59used as the location a christmas window display has been specially installed we have some fake snow
25:07here to create that sort of christmas illusion a few extras with shopping bags and then these two
25:13sisters meeting which is basically it's the climax of the commercial the first shot we're going to be
25:19doing is coming through the window the very last shot of the spot looking out this way at the two girls
25:25actually feels quite christmasy it does it really does actually yeah filming in public or an open
25:32set as it's known throws in all sorts of challenges we can't shut the traffic down we can control
25:38pedestrians to a certain degree but we have to be careful with that obviously london being london
25:43sometimes pedestrians just don't stop anyway regardless of what you're asking them to do
25:47so it's going to be a little bit challenging the thing that's in our favor it's night it's getting cold
25:52and it's a sunday night so most people don't come out on sunday night certainly not down here
25:57but at least it's not raining now you can imagine this scene if it was chucking it down with rain
26:03it would be very different um so thank heavens literally uh that um it isn't raining we've got a
26:10clear night the outside scenes can be set up before the shop closes and then the team can move inside
26:18where they'll work through the night believe it or not we've built a set in the store so it's supposed
26:24to be part of the house that we filmed in in bulgaria store opens at 10 so we need to get done by night
26:31by eight o'clock to be gone so there's not a sign of us left by ten they have 12 hours to get
26:37everything done so everyone's on hand to help i don't even know what i'm doing right now
26:42we're all mucking in yeah it's very hot and sweaty at the moment but it's all going well we're
26:49doing really well a bit of a nice at the museum moment for us probably a good thing that i've got
27:00some adrenaline because i've got to stay up all night and if i didn't have the adrenaline i'd be
27:04fast asleep by 3am one take one three two one action
27:09meanwhile back up in yorkshire
27:17well welcome to weatherby i'm so excited months of research and development have
27:23been painstakingly poured over to design this year's christmas window display
27:30oh my god it looks amazing happy christmas
27:33we've tried to mock this up as best as possible so yeah it feels great head of visual merchandising
27:42sean roberts has come to check stylist tom's mock-up of the window displays before they're installed in
27:48oxford street it's got like an element of nostalgia for me i think it's maybe the shape of the christmas
27:54light as well it feels yeah it feels a little bit more nostalgic doesn't it have we got enough
28:01decorations no no so we thought we had enough decorations that we've had to now triple i think
28:08we might need some more shop windows are hugely important i think people probably underestimate the
28:15time and effort that goes into it um and the level of detail that we go into we want you to be
28:21captivated we want you to take a slow meander along the storefront we want you to walk away with a
28:28bit of a warm glow when i watch people stand there in front of our windows there is definitely a moment
28:33of pride when you see them getting their phones out or having selfies in front of them there is a little
28:38bit of you know i did that the window display is a calling card for potential customers they need to
28:46be eye-catching seasonal and interesting all of these really need teasing like out on sight and then
28:53i think it will feel bulkier we've got to use a little bit of imagination here haven't we nothing
28:59is left to chance many many an hour is spent discussing mannequins i think for us it's really
29:05important to get the right mannequin they've got more organic poses so we're really pleased with some of
29:10the styles that we've got they just feel really relaxed which is also um what i love about the
29:16poses i think that he'll look great and say like a tuxedo or a suit because we've got loads of options
29:21seeing it all come to life is both exciting but also it's kind of the start of a bit of a magical
29:26journey for us um we can start to envisage what things are actually going to look like in real life
29:31we really get a sense of what the finished windows will be so it gives us confidence really taking this
29:36forward sean signing off is a blessing and a curse for tom it's great that she loves the design but
29:44as he's made a few changes on the hoof he now has to make sure it'll all fit everything has to be built
29:51and decorated and covered in snow then re-divided into almost bite-sized chunks to then fit through all
29:57the access points the windows are blacked out so there's no way of standing outside on the street you
30:02can't see anything so everything has to be done by reflection and everything has to be done backwards
30:09tom's changes have made him nervous as to whether he may have now gone too big so now we've made these
30:15changes are you sure triple sure that it will fit in i was sure until we added all these changes i know
30:23that it will fit i just you know what if it doesn't well there's always a backup for putting it on the
30:29outside on the outside hello good evening john lewis has long been a supplier and designer of fashion
30:43every year they release a selection of dream dresses for the festive season that's 135 pounds in that silver
30:51jacquard so really beautiful shape fabulous kind of tie detail as well great for the party season
31:00beth pettit is unveiling this year's selection of dresses to the in-house marketing team
31:07this is a cracker and this has just come in and this is nobody's child we're going to put this out at 99
31:12pounds really good to have that sub 100 price point check out that little bow detail so sweet
31:19all of these dresses are going to be exclusive for john lewis the christmas season is an important
31:26time for the fashion industry and with online competitors snapping at their heels john lewis
31:33needs to maintain its place in the fashion hierarchy it's super fun and a little bit stressful um and that's
31:41a good blend i think uh you know we're not saving babies but um we want to do a brilliant job
31:46it's really up to us to judge exactly how much of this to buy and make sure that we get it in the
31:53right place at the right time in order to do that they need exposure and that comes from teaming up
32:00with fashion magazines to try and set new styles and trends women's fashion takes up one of the biggest
32:08floor spaces within the store and the dream dress collection has now taken center stage
32:18meanwhile two floors up very impressive yeah it's one week before opening and the christmas shop
32:25is taken shape sam's been overseeing the christmas shop for 10 years and knows what she likes oh very
32:33nice yeah i like the lights look very pretty yeah twinkly there is no lack of experience on the shop floor
32:41i am approaching 17 years of christmas tree dressing now the highlight of my year is always
32:46christmas shop i know it can be cliche but it brings me so much joy just to to see all the christmas
32:52trees coming up it's it's pure magic i spend a lot of time fluffing a tree you have to fluff it with an
32:59inch of its life have someone stand on the other side if you can see them it's not done right
33:07lisa's come to see how the products that she purchased over a year ago are looking
33:13that's me that's a classic
33:18every year there's a selection of decorations from the traditional to the ultra modern
33:23little mushrooms but regardless of the style the same care goes into decorating every one of the
33:3070 trees in store we've got the pink tree this year what's your feelings um i do like it i think it's
33:38nice for a bedroom or something i won't personally have it in my living room but you know i like it
33:43quite traditional i don't like anything i would have a cake on my tree personally yeah personally yeah
33:47but if you thought getting the lights on a christmas tree was hard try lighting a six-story
33:5690 meter long building on one of the world's busiest streets we have to move our attachment
34:03points around the pillar and at a certain point you haven't got much to stand on we are 75 feet from
34:11the ground which is 25 meters everything's very organized it has to be everything it has to happen in the
34:16right order this is not a job for the faint-hearted i think john lees have some of the biggest christmas
34:22lighting in the country and they're keen to let their customers know christmas is coming
34:29a specialist team of rope experts have been brought in to install the nine kilometers of christmas lights
34:35across the front of the building in total i think it's 4 000 light strings which equates to 70 000
34:42bulbs i think and over a kilometer of data cable sort of works like a big very pixelated tv effectively
34:49so it looks over super effective once it's up and running but getting it up and running isn't
34:55straightforward the wind can funnel down oxford street catching the cables and tangling them
35:02so if you get a little bit of early warning if there's a gust because there's decorations already in
35:05the street yeah sort of try and keep an eye on what's happening with the wind just so your rope doesn't
35:10disappear down down oxford street to prevent that from happening the lights are also fixed intermittently
35:17to the side of the building and of course there's only one way to do that
35:25as i'm going down i've got to make sure i don't catch any of the lights pull them sort of out of their
35:29sockets or from where they've been attached to the building
35:31the nine kilometers of lights will be hung from the facade for three months over the festive season
35:44they'll then be brought down untangled and thoroughly checked a process that takes over a month
35:51uh just make sure everything's lined up down now at last the lights are all in place so that looks
36:01like the whole section definitely check all the data cables but up top there's an issue the lights
36:08are controlled from a server in italy and it's telling them that there's a problem we've got no
36:13lights we'll check we'll check power yeah check the power feed there's a loose connection somewhere
36:18and half the lights aren't working it's just a case of making it work now which is the usual
36:23problem with christmas lights in order to find the fault the entire nine kilometers of lights has to
36:30be checked we've got a lot of cable to look at we've got nine kilometers of uh electrical cable so the
36:36guy's going to get on the ropes then try and diagnose the problem and solve it from now
36:40coming up with christmas fast approaching we're supplying this in a couple of days time it's live
36:52next week it's judgment time for john lewis we've only got a certain window between the store closing
36:58and the store reopening it's quite nerve-wracking
37:06in east london customer director charlotte lock has come to see how the christmas advert is coming
37:12together so we're going to show you today we're pretty much there in terms of we're like 70 percent
37:17there it's a nerve-wracking moment where you see it for the first time because you've seen all of the
37:23bits separately and you know it's great production values and great performances but you don't know
37:28whether the story's going to work
37:39this is mine ah the rain looks fantastic that's come on so much really captures her
37:55uh teenage emotions stormy stormy
38:07what took you so long you
38:17i love it i absolutely love it gosh well done guys i'm blown away it's maybe quite emotional
38:23actually amazing but it's just the warmth and the magic that you've brought you know those moments
38:29where the dream kind of fantastical stuff happens where the snow comes in the rain comes in it's just
38:39really really beautifully done the ad is going live next week so on this shot we've obviously like
38:47painted in the carpet around the edges so any amendments need to be addressed quickly do you want
38:52to talk me through what's to do then what's left ultimately it's just like integration of just
38:57making sure it all feels real and dramatic it's really really beautiful but it doesn't look like
39:03snow it looks like polystyrene so it's especially this this one is the one that's least far along
39:08there's a lot of work to do and time is not on their side the only thing that gives me slight
39:14anxiety is when you say some of the shots are 70 there we're supplying this in a couple of days time
39:19it's live next week if you've got any worries about timing sure it's on tonight yeah the team
39:25going on amazing we know exactly what we need to do i think it hits all of the right notes i'm
39:30delighted with it i couldn't be prouder of the team they've put so much effort into it and expertise
39:35and creativity but we'll see the nation's the judge after all
39:39back on oxford street as soon as the shop closes to the public it opens privately to contractors
39:55tonight the high ropes team are in obviously we've only got a certain window between the
40:00store closing and the store reopening as well as the christmas window team
40:08the installation has been moved from the workshop in yorkshire and transported 200 miles to london
40:16it's all blocked out on the windows right here is oxford street
40:21now they have to make sure that it fits
40:23that'll be covered in snow and twinkling with like these malfunctioning lights yeah just all
40:29feeling really magical and christmassy and snowy and cold and frosty and special
40:37while the window display team get to work on the ground floor
40:43six floors above them the interior christmas lights are being installed
40:47very similar to the outside light strings are loaded onto reels
40:51the last thing we want to do is end up with spaghetti
40:56it's like solving a puzzle whilst dangling from the ceiling
41:02the decorations change every year it's quite interesting and working out those challenges
41:06of how those decorations are going to fit in that sort of three-dimensional space
41:10it's the day after the night before there's no trace of the high ropes team other than what's been
41:25left in their place oh wow are they amazing and i thought it was just christmas shop but now the whole
41:32shop looks christmasy today the christmas shop on the third floor is officially opening
41:39looks very nice in here no holes or goods sam has to check that everything's in order
41:44how you doing sir you okay here this table looks amazing from the front
41:48but with only 15 minutes before the shop opens there's a problem you've got unscrew that screw there
41:54and put little gingerbread man back in a gingerbread man from the lego collection has gone rogue
42:01life's hard isn't it yeah disaster averted last thing was a gingerbread man so now we are ready to open
42:10merry christmas
42:11over the next three months thousands of people will walk through the christmas shop
42:22at its peak john lewis sells 1600 christmas trees 150 000 baubles and 3 000 panettone a day
42:34oh it's fantastic as always it's always part of our family christmas it's just wonderful gives you a

43:58packing it all and transporting it 250 miles from the north of england but we got there and it's in
44:03so happy very happy on the ground floor outside looking in james sean and tom have come to check
44:12out the christmas windows which have just been unveiled great i mean on oxford street it makes
