00:00Is Macron making media outlets bear compulsory labels?
00:07If you believe a string of online petitions,
00:09a French president Emmanuel Macron
00:11wants all news sites to display a label
00:14to distinguish good outlets from bad ones.
00:16This petition, penned by the conservative Les Républicains party,
00:20alleges that Macron's strategy is part of a cunning ruse
00:23targeting freedom of speech and information in France.
00:26Other political groups, such as the conservative UDR party,
00:29have also relayed a similar petition,
00:31accusing the French executive of trying to establish a Ministry of Truth,
00:36ultimately calling for the label project to be abandoned.
00:39The right-wing press jumped on the media frenzy,
00:41with the Journal du Dimanche, owned by media mogul Vincent Bolloré,
00:44publishing a front-page story accusing Macron of wanting to control the media.
00:49So, where did all this controversy stem from?
00:52On the 19th of November,
00:54at a meeting of readers of French local news outlet La Voix du Nord,
00:57Macron was asked about tackling fake news online.
01:00He responded by presenting his planned project for outlets
01:03to display a reliability label.
01:05However, he made it clear that this label should be awarded
01:08by independent professionals,
01:10highlighting that it was not the role of the government
01:12to monitor information.
01:14Following the controversy,
01:15the French executive took to X to call out misleading coverage
01:18of the president's statements.
01:28Macron cited the Journalism Trust initiative,
01:31which certifies reliable media outlets as an example.
01:34They can participate by filling out a voluntary questionnaire
01:37on their journalistic methods,
01:39which is then peer-reviewed by a panel of experts.
01:42To date, more than 2,400 media outlets
01:45have registered to enroll in the JTI certification process.
