00:00Climate change is unfulfilled, dark interiors of this species, Homo sapiens.
00:06New haircut, new pair of shoes, a new husband, a new job.
00:12This, that and all of that is energy.
00:15So they keep on purchasing everything.
00:17When you extract stuff from the earth, that requires energy.
00:21That releases carbon dioxide and methane.
00:24So when you go out and do things, you release carbon.
00:26When you do not know what you are doing, then you do it endlessly.
00:30I'm not feeling well, not feeling well.
00:32Your feelings are carbon.
00:34The human being has a hollow in her heart.
00:38There can be no scientific, no economic, no political, no technological solution to the climate disaster.
00:46Not at all.
00:47We are destroyers.
00:48We are destroyers because we are unhappy within, unfulfilled within, joyless and loveless within.
00:54I'm very passionate about, like, climate justice and climate change.
01:04And, you know, UC Berkeley is said to be one of the very environmentally friendly universities.
01:09But since coming here, I feel like a lot of my peers actually don't really care.
01:12And you talk a lot about climate justice and climate change.
01:18And I was wondering, you know, this idea that, like, I have this idea that, you know, climate change is my issue.
01:24And as an individual, I have to do a lot for it.
01:26And it's also sometimes disheartening, especially because you see a lot of, like, big corporations doing most of the impact for climate change.
01:34But I know you talk a lot about how climate change is, like, human consciousness related.
01:41And I was wondering if you can elaborate on how our inner void and compulsive consumption are linked to environmental destruction.
01:49And how we can also manage that as purely individuals that have such a much smaller impact on environmental degradation.
01:59You see, it's very simple.
02:02It can be explained even to a kid.
02:04And I do that.
02:06So, we are upset within.
02:10We are not okay within.
02:12We are unfulfilled.
02:13And we do not know why.
02:16Because we are not educated, not trained to have an inward focus in life.
02:23We don't look at ourselves.
02:24We don't reflect at our thoughts, actions, feelings.
02:27So, we remain upset, unsettled within.
02:30And when we are that way, then we want to go out and do things.
02:38Let's go somewhere.
02:40Let's eat out there.
02:42Let's fly to that place.
02:45Let me buy new stuff.
02:47Why can't I have a private jet?
02:55Why can't I fly to my job daily?
02:57So, when you do things outside, it's obvious it requires energy.
03:08And it so happens that the more uprooted you are inside, the more is the number of unending
03:21things that you compulsively want to do on the outside.
03:25I am not at rest, I am not at peace.
03:30So, sometimes I go and pick that up.
03:33Sometimes I go and, you know, try putting that chair over there.
03:38Sometimes I run upstairs.
03:42Drop something there.
03:43Oh, what if I could have a badminton coat in the adjacent lawns?
03:54So, I'll cut down, uproot all the trees and have a cemented coat there.
04:00And I'll do all these things.
04:01And I'm doing these things because I'm not all right within.
04:06Just that doing all these things requires energy.
04:09Energy.
04:10And a thing of coincidence is that most of the planet's energy today comes from fossil fuels.
04:24Fossil fuels.
04:26So, when you go out and do things, you release carbon.
04:29It's as simple as that.
04:32Now, going out and doing things is not really the problem.
04:35Because if you're doing something for the right end,
04:37it usually has an end point as well.
04:43But when you do not know what you're doing,
04:46then you do it endlessly.
04:47Like corporate profits.
04:50Go and ask
04:51somebody
04:53in the board of a corporate.
04:56You know, do you have an end point?
04:58This is how your P&L and balance sheet looks.
05:03Is there ever going to be a point where you would say enough is enough, it's saturated
05:07and we are not proceeding any further?
05:10We don't require
05:11at least an
05:14ever increasing number
05:17against my profits.
05:20Even a stable level of profits would do.
05:23Go and ask them.
05:24Not a single person,
05:26not a single CEO,
05:27not a single stakeholder is going to say
05:29there is a definite end point.
05:33They'll say we require it to increase every year.
05:36Now, for it to increase every year,
05:37you'll have to consume energy.
05:40You'll have to dig out stuff from
05:43below the surface of the earth.
05:45You'll have to burn things
05:48and you'll have to brainwash
05:51your consumers into believing
05:53that the products of your company
05:55are needed for them
05:56to have a sustainable or respectable life.
06:00You'll destroy everything.
06:03You'll destroy your employees as well
06:05because since you have no
06:07upper limit to your profit,
06:10so you'll want to extract
06:11the maximum from your employees
06:13offering the minimum you can to them.
06:17You would exploit the earth,
06:19you would exploit your employees
06:21and obviously you will exploit your customers.
06:25And all that is climate change.
06:27When you extract stuff from the earth
06:30that requires energy,
06:32that releases carbon dioxide and methane,
06:36when you brainwash your customers,
06:39they purchase not just your useless products,
06:43they get identified as being
06:47purchasers and consumers.
06:49So they keep on purchasing everything,
06:51not just your stuff.
06:53Not just your stuff.
06:56And when you purchase,
06:57then somebody manufactures
06:58for somebody to manufacture something,
07:00again, what is needed as energy?
07:01So climate change is nothing but a product
07:07of the unfulfilled dark interiors
07:11of this species Homo sapiens.
07:14No other species is born with this kind of unrest within.
07:19No other species is responsible for the climate disaster.
07:22Because only the human being has a hollow in her heart.
07:33A hollow that she keeps trying to plug in
07:37using all kinds of material things.
07:39A new hair cut,
07:45a new pair of shoes,
07:47a new husband,
07:48a new job,
07:50this, that and all of that
07:52is energy.
07:55I am not feeling well,
07:56not feeling well.
07:57Your feelings are carbon.
08:01Because in feelings,
08:02as we said,
08:02there are no facts.
08:04You do not know
08:04what the facts of your insides are.
08:08All you have is feelings.
08:09And feelings are blind.
08:12Feeling,
08:13to feel so much
08:14is to experience so much
08:15without understanding anything.
08:17When you feel something,
08:20do you ever understand it?
08:21You feel you have a headache, right?
08:24That doesn't mean that you understand
08:26how the brain works
08:27and why it is aching.
08:29So we feel a lot,
08:31but we are not at all in touch with facts.
08:33And this feeling,
08:35given the kind of respect
08:36we give to feelings,
08:38makes us run hither thither
08:40and all that is carbon emission.
08:45There can be no scientific,
08:47no economic,
08:48no political,
08:49no technological solution
08:51to the climate disaster.
08:53Not at all.
08:54Because this is purely
08:55a spiritual crisis.
09:00I agree that,
09:01you know,
09:01overconsumption
09:02is one of the biggest problems
09:04for climate change
09:05and climate justice.
09:06But sometimes it's not
09:08even overconsumption.
09:09You're consuming
09:09the bare minimum.
09:11But like you were talking about,
09:13like technological advancements,
09:15how do we stop
09:16like our society
09:17from going stagnant?
09:18Because innovation,
09:20every innovation
09:20and every field now
09:22requires some sort of
09:24large carbon footprint.
09:25And how do we,
09:26is there a way to coexist
09:27with innovation,
09:29spirituality,
09:29and climate justice?
09:32You know,
09:32I do not see
09:33how innovation
09:34is out of tune
09:35with mitigating
09:37the climate disaster.
09:40Right now,
09:40what you call as innovation
09:42is nothing
09:43but the particular
09:46kind of innovation
09:47that would further
09:50the capitalist objective.
09:53We don't just innovate.
09:54We innovate only
09:55in particular directions.
09:57Directions
09:58that would enable us
09:59to have more profit.
10:01So we are not having
10:02real innovation.
10:03Mind you.
10:06We only innovate
10:07where there would be
10:09an ROI
10:10on the innovation.
10:14So,
10:15it's not as if
10:16innovation
10:18goes necessarily
10:20hand in hand
10:22with consumption.
10:23innovation.
10:26That's the kind
10:26of innovation
10:27we are seeing.
10:28But that's not the rule.
10:33This idea
10:35that unless
10:37there are more profits
10:39and these things,
10:40we would not progress.
10:43Are we even testing
10:44this idea?
10:46You see,
10:47man does not exist
10:48for the sake
10:50of financial growth.
10:52Instead,
10:54financial growth
10:55is for the sake
10:57of the human being.
10:58Right?
11:00True.
11:01Do we realize
11:02first of all
11:02what we truly want?
11:05Now,
11:05obviously,
11:06to an extent,
11:08money is important
11:09in that.
11:11But isn't
11:13there
11:13a point
11:15beyond which
11:16the returns
11:18start diminishing?
11:19if you live
11:23in a third world
11:24country
11:24with very little
11:27financial resources,
11:29then obviously
11:29having money
11:31would contribute
11:32to your welfare.
11:33We all agree.
11:34Right?
11:35You'd get better
11:36nourishment,
11:36you'd probably
11:37get a roof
11:37over your head,
11:38your students
11:39would get better
11:40schooling,
11:40your kids that is.
11:42All that would
11:42start happening.
11:43We understand.
11:43But a point
11:45comes
11:46when
11:46more money
11:48or more
11:48consumption
11:49does not
11:50contribute
11:51any more
11:52to your welfare.
11:53The curve
11:53starts flattening.
11:56Is that not so?
11:57And then
11:58there might be
11:59a point
11:59when the curve
12:00actually starts
12:01dipping.
12:03Negative
12:03marginal utility.
12:04So why
12:07do we
12:07continue
12:08to believe
12:08that
12:09unending
12:10growth
12:11in per capita
12:13income
12:14or per capita
12:15consumption
12:15is the
12:17sine qua non
12:18for human
12:19progress?
12:22That's not
12:23that way.
12:23It's an
12:24assumption
12:24that we
12:25need to
12:25challenge.
12:28Look at
12:29there are
12:30several
12:30countries
12:31where
12:33the
12:34per capita
12:34income
12:35is very
12:36modest.
12:39Yet
12:40the
12:41average
12:42life
12:42expectancy
12:43is better
12:44than
12:44some
12:44of
12:45the
12:45first
12:46world
12:46countries.
12:50Innovations
12:51are
12:52happening
12:53at
12:54the
12:54same
12:55rate
12:55or
12:55at
12:56faster
12:56rate
12:57than
12:58the
12:58global
12:58north.
13:01Japan
13:03is
13:03known
13:04to
13:04have
13:04people
13:05who
13:06live
13:06the
13:06longest.
13:13Are
13:14Japanese
13:14richer
13:15than
13:15the
13:16Americans?
13:16No.
13:17In terms
13:17of
13:17per capita
13:18income,
13:18no.
13:20But
13:21they are
13:21more
13:22peaceful
13:22and
13:22happier.
13:24So
13:24is
13:25capital
13:27money
13:27financial
13:29growth
13:29needed
13:31for
13:32its
13:32own
13:32sake
13:33or
13:36is
13:36all
13:36economics
13:37actually
13:38for
13:40the
13:40sake
13:40of
13:40the
13:41individual?
13:43And
13:43do we
13:44understand
13:44what
13:44the
13:44individual
13:45really
13:45needs?
13:46We
13:46are
13:46not
13:46saying
13:46the
13:47individual
13:47needs
13:47mystical
13:48salvation.
13:50No.
13:51We
13:51are not
13:51coming
13:51from
13:51there.
13:53No
13:53spiritual
13:54mumbo
13:54jumbo
13:54here.
13:56We
13:56fully
13:56understand
13:57that
13:58we
13:58need
13:58money.
14:01But
14:01being
14:01rational
14:02people
14:02we
14:03would
14:03also
14:03want
14:03to
14:04plot
14:04money
14:06against
14:06welfare
14:07and
14:08see
14:09where
14:09the
14:09curve
14:10attains
14:10saturation.
14:12And
14:12beyond
14:13that
14:13if
14:13you
14:13are
14:13still
14:14invested
14:14in
14:15earning
14:15money
14:15then
14:16you
14:16are
14:17wasting
14:17yourself
14:17your
14:18life
14:18and
14:18also
14:19destroying
14:19the
14:20planet.
14:21That's
14:21what
14:21is
14:21happening.
14:22That's
14:22what
14:22is
14:22climate
14:23change.
14:26So
14:26I
14:26had
14:27an
14:27interesting
14:27point
14:27to
14:28add
14:28to
14:28this
14:28because
14:28the
14:29other
14:29day
14:29I
14:29was
14:29taking
14:30a
14:30class
14:30on
14:30human
14:30happiness
14:31here
14:31at
14:31Berkeley
14:31and
14:32we
14:32were
14:32discussing
14:33how
14:33in
14:33the
14:33US
14:34there
14:35is
14:36the
14:36curve
14:36that
14:36you
14:36just
14:36described
14:37for
14:38an
14:38average
14:38American
14:39the
14:39curve
14:40sort
14:40of
14:40stagnates
14:42at
14:42$75,000
14:43annually.
14:45After
14:45that
14:46the
14:46diminishing
14:47effect
14:47of
14:48money
14:48as
14:49you
14:49say
14:49sort
14:50of
14:50proves
14:50out
14:51to
14:51be.
14:52And
14:52it's
14:52interesting
14:52how
14:53within
14:53that
14:53same
14:54class
14:54we

16:04look
16:05more
16:05into
16:05it
16:05and
16:05it's
16:06very
16:06interesting
16:06just
16:08as
16:08you
16:08could
16:08come
16:09up
16:09with
16:09a
16:09figure
16:09beyond
16:11which
16:11the
16:11returns
16:12start
16:12diminishing
16:13similarly
16:14there is
16:15an
16:15established
16:16figure
16:16on
16:17the
16:17per capita
16:18material
16:19consumption
16:19that
16:20is
16:20sustainable
16:21for the
16:22planet
16:22we also
16:30have
16:31very
16:32established
16:32very
16:33scientifically
16:33proven
16:34figures
16:34on the
16:35per capita
16:36emissions
16:37that can be
16:38sustained by
16:38the planet
16:39so all that
16:40is very well
16:40known
16:41just that
16:43the policy
16:44makers
16:44themselves
16:45are financed
16:48by the
16:49ones who
16:49want us
16:50to endlessly
16:51consume
16:51and that's
16:53a problem
16:53with the
16:54democratic
16:54model
16:55you see
16:57I'm the top
17:00manipulator
17:01and I want
17:02these people
17:02to vote
17:02for me
17:03so I
17:05leave them
17:05worse off
17:07psychologically
17:09than they
17:09ever were
17:10I'll condition
17:15them
17:15I'll indoctrinate
17:17them
17:17I'll radicalize
17:18them
17:18I'll leave
17:19them
17:20worse off
17:21that's what
17:22democracy
17:23does
17:24to an
17:24ignorant
17:25voter
17:25please understand
17:27if these
17:28people can
17:29vote for me
17:30only if they
17:30are uneducated
17:31then as a
17:33policy maker
17:33I would
17:35deliberately
17:35keep them
17:36uneducated
17:36if I want
17:37to come
17:38back to
17:38office
17:39if these
17:42people will
17:43vote for me
17:44only when
17:45they are
17:45radicalized
17:46I'll ensure
17:48I keep
17:48radicalizing
17:49them
17:49deliberately
17:50so that
17:51they keep
17:52voting for
17:52me
17:52and that's
17:54a huge
17:55flaw in the
17:55democratic
17:55model
17:56the entire
17:56world is
17:57experiencing
17:57it
17:57we'll need
17:59to correct
17:59it
17:59I also
18:06wanted to
18:07ask more
18:07on you
18:08know as
18:08you brought
18:09up a really
18:09interesting point
18:10about how
18:10climate change
18:11is not
18:12it's more
18:13spiritual than
18:14anything else
18:15that we know
18:15of and how
18:16we are
18:18ourselves the
18:19contributor to
18:20climate change
18:21consciously or
18:22unconsciously
18:22I was
18:24wondering
18:24then if
18:25that is the
18:25case as you
18:26said democracy
18:27has its own
18:28flaws who
18:29really is
18:29responsible for
18:30driving this
18:32spiritual change
18:33within folks
18:35is it us
18:36ourselves or
18:37who exactly
18:38should we
18:40look up
18:40the culprit
18:41is the fellow
18:42who understands
18:43yet not
18:44acts
18:45the electorate
18:52we said
18:52is ignorant
18:54in general
18:54the ones
18:57in power
18:57have vested
18:58interests in
18:59keeping the
19:00electorate
19:01ignorant
19:01then who
19:07can be
19:07termed as
19:08responsible
19:08for the
19:09state we
19:10are in
19:10the ignorant
19:12person is
19:13as good as
19:14someone asleep
19:15if somebody
19:18is sleeping
19:18you don't go
19:20and blame them
19:20right they
19:21don't know
19:21anything at
19:22all anyway
19:22who is to
19:26be blamed
19:26then
19:26the fellow
19:27who knows
19:28and yet
19:28not acts
19:29he is the
19:30one to be
19:31blamed
19:31and this
19:35is the
19:35person
19:35all real
19:37positive
19:37change
19:38will come
19:38from
19:39the fellow
19:40who knows
19:41and acts
19:43unfortunately
19:45we have
19:46too many
19:46people who
19:47do not
19:47know
19:47but act
19:49vigorously
19:49and there
19:52is a great
19:53dearth of
19:54people who
19:55know
19:55first of all
19:56people who
19:57know
19:57they themselves
19:58are a rarity
19:59and even
20:00among this
20:01rare class
20:02those who
20:03know
20:04and have
20:05the love
20:05the guts
20:06the responsibility
20:08to act
20:09they are
20:10absolutely
20:11rare
20:12those are
20:15the people
20:15that will
20:16bring about
20:16change
20:16yeah i
20:22completely agree
20:23with that
20:24and honestly
20:25like i feel
20:25like i try to
20:26be that person
20:27sometimes but
20:27it's really
20:28difficult
20:29i'll give
20:30an example
20:30i like
20:31i live in
20:32the dorms
20:32and here
20:33you know
20:34the water
20:34or whatever
20:35it takes a
20:35long time
20:36to heat up
20:37and sometimes
20:38i've seen my
20:38friends you know
20:39turn on the
20:39shower
20:40go and like
20:41do something
20:41else and
20:41come back
20:42so it's
20:42warm
20:42and i was
20:44telling my
20:44dad about
20:44this and
20:45i was like
20:45yeah like
20:45i don't
20:46really like
20:46how people
20:46do this
20:47and he's
20:48like so
20:49you wait
20:49in the
20:49cold shower
20:50and you
20:51just like
20:52you just
20:52deal with
20:52it because
20:53you don't
20:53want to
20:53waste
20:54water
20:54and my
20:55dad tells
20:55me that
20:56you know
20:56the way
20:57to get
20:57it like
20:58you can't
20:58be the
20:58person
20:59taking all
20:59the burden
21:00and all
21:00the blame
21:01for climate
21:02change and
21:03dealing with
21:03it obviously
21:04this is a
21:04very small
21:05example it's
21:05just water
21:06but um
21:07like how
21:07does one
21:08person manage
21:09that burden
21:10and you
21:11know even
21:11educate other
21:12people when
21:13oftentimes climate
21:14change is
21:14something that
21:14it's not an
21:15impeding issue
21:16for most
21:16people it's
21:17not very
21:18urgent so
21:19for many
21:20people it
21:20doesn't feel
21:20like they
21:21have to do
21:21anything and
21:22so for
21:23oftentimes people
21:24who do know
21:24and who do
21:25act it feels
21:26like they're
21:27the only ones
21:28who do
21:28care and
21:29they can't
21:30get other
21:30people to
21:30care
21:31wonderful
21:32thing to
21:33bring up
21:34you see we
21:34said climate
21:36change is
21:37the thing
21:37that emanates
21:40from the
21:41hollow within
21:41the human
21:43being's heart
21:44right
21:44so
21:47this would
21:49suggest
21:49and so has
21:51been my
21:51experience
21:51that addressing
21:53climate change
21:55does directly
21:57does not
21:57help
21:57because it
22:00is you
22:01you are
22:02addressing the
22:03emission
22:03you are not
22:05addressing the
22:05source of
22:06emission
22:06the source of
22:10emission is
22:10not really the
22:11exhaust tube of
22:12the automobile
22:12it is the
22:14heart of the
22:14human being
22:15that has to
22:18be addressed
22:18and if you
22:19address that
22:20let's say
22:22without even
22:23bringing in
22:24these two
22:25words in
22:26the discussion
22:26climate change
22:27you might
22:28still find
22:29that the
22:31fellow has
22:31become
22:32in general
22:33more sensitive
22:35towards the
22:36surroundings
22:37her actions
22:38her relationships
22:40her entire
22:41being
22:41see that's the
22:46problem with
22:47climate activism
22:48we want to
22:51behave as
22:52if climate
22:54change is an
22:55isolated
22:55problem
22:56we do not
22:59want to
23:00or we fail
23:01to see
23:02the clear
23:04very strong
23:05relationship
23:06between
23:08human
23:11human
23:12unfulfillment
23:15and the
23:19burgeoning
23:20emissions
23:22it's not as
23:24if we
23:25have been
23:27especially
23:27unfulfilled
23:28only since
23:29the last
23:30hundred years
23:32or so
23:32when the
23:33CO2 PPM
23:34started rising
23:35we have always
23:36been like this
23:37just that
23:38till around
23:401850 or
23:411870
23:42we didn't
23:43have the
23:44technological
23:44means
23:45to burn
23:47so much
23:47fossil fuel
23:48or burn
23:49anything
23:49and reproduce
23:51so much
23:52and sustain
23:53such large
23:54populations
23:54we didn't
23:55have the
23:56wherewithal
23:56so just
23:59by virtue
24:00of our
24:01incapacity
24:02the earth
24:02somehow managed
24:03to remain
24:04saved
24:05but after
24:07the industrial
24:07revolution
24:08we developed
24:09the might
24:10to do
24:11things on
24:12a never
24:13seen before
24:14industrial
24:14scale
24:15we were
24:22always
24:22like that
24:22you know
24:23wherever we
24:24went
24:24we
24:25brought
24:26destruction
24:27in our
24:27wake
24:27it's not
24:30that we
24:30are
24:31destroying
24:31species
24:32annihilating
24:33entire species
24:33just today
24:34we have been
24:35doing
24:36that since
24:37centuries
24:37just that
24:38the rate
24:39has
24:39exponentially
24:40grown
24:40we went
24:47to Australia
24:47what happened
24:48to the native
24:49species there
24:50both animals
24:51and human
24:51beings
24:51we went
24:56to America
24:56what happened
24:57to the natives
24:57there
24:58wherever
24:59we go
25:00we go
25:01with a
25:01sword
25:02and a
25:02torch
25:02we are
25:08destroyers
25:09we are
25:09destroyers
25:10because
25:10we are
25:11unhappy
25:11within
25:12unfulfilled
25:12within
25:13joyless
25:14and loveless
25:14within
25:15if you
25:17address
25:18that in
25:18a person
25:19you might
25:20find that
25:21the issue
25:22of climate
25:22has been
25:23taken care
25:24of without
25:25even bringing
25:26in the
25:26word
25:26you never
25:29talk to
25:30that person
25:30about
25:31climate
25:31and yet
25:32you find
25:33that the
25:33fellow
25:33has become
25:34more
25:34responsible
25:35the fellow
25:36does not
25:37even know
25:37that his
25:38carbon footprint
25:39has shrunk
25:40and yet
25:41it has
25:42whereas
25:43when you
25:44are on the
25:45side of
25:46activism
25:46then you
25:48keep harping
25:48on this
25:49thing
25:49you know
25:49you please
25:50manage
25:50your water
25:51consumption
25:52and see
25:54you must
25:54shut down
25:55these lights
25:56use less
25:58of this
25:58use less
25:59of that
25:59and all
26:00that is
26:00just so
26:01boringly
26:02moral
26:04who would
26:06want to
26:06hear that
26:07so be it
26:08the vegan
26:09activists
26:10or the
26:10climate
26:10activists
26:11or the
26:11plastic
26:12activists
26:13they are
26:15abhorred
26:16people run
26:17away looking
26:18at them
26:18because they
26:20are so
26:20predictable
26:21and what
26:22is predictable
26:23becomes
26:23boring
26:23now she
26:25will come
26:25and
26:27pontificate
26:29on this
26:29and that
26:30I have
26:31had enough
26:31of that
26:31no I
26:32don't want
26:32that
26:33why not
26:35speak to
26:35people
26:36about
26:37their life
26:38about their
26:39love
26:40about great
26:41literature
26:42about the
26:43pressing issues
26:44in the world
26:44take them
26:47deeper
26:47into
26:48themselves
26:49there is
26:51such fabulous
26:51literature
26:52available
26:52on the
26:54wisdom
26:54side
26:54why not
26:56have a
26:56club
26:57that
26:57discusses
26:58such
26:58literature
26:58and a
27:01very
27:01silent
27:01byproduct
27:02of this
27:03thing
27:03will be
27:04that
27:04people
27:04will
27:04become
27:05more
27:05climate
27:06responsible
27:06very
27:08silent
