00:00Is Matt Lauer making a comeback again?
00:03Here with Moore is our Page Six editor, Ian Moore.
00:06I'm having deja vu, what's going on?
00:08So People Magazine, as you've seen,
00:10reported earlier this week that Matt Lauer
00:13could be making a comeback, and there were insiders
00:16saying that he's exploring this comeback.
00:18Now, when I saw this story similarly,
00:21I remembered it rang a bell, and then I looked back
00:24and I saw that at Page Six we've essentially
00:27been writing this story every year, starting in 2018,
00:31which was a year Matt Lauer was ousted from,
00:34you know, fired from NBC in November of 2017.
00:38So essentially, this is an annual chestnut
00:41that comes back in November of every year
00:44that insiders say Matt Lauer is making a comeback.
00:47It's like the Tom Cruise coconut cake.
00:49It just arrives for the holidays,
00:51and we have to make sense of it all.
00:52But unlike a coconut cake, which can be delightful,
00:56it turns out that everyone wants the coconut cake,
00:58I want one, no one wants Matt Lauer back.
01:01Maybe, now, sources have speculated, you know,
01:04are people in his camp maybe leaking this?
01:06Are they sort of exploring what the public appetite might be
01:10for him to make a comeback?
01:11But our sources have said, look, no one's going to hire him.
01:15He's basically unhireable.
01:17And that his skill set, as well, you know,
01:21is very much was this sort of old-fashioned Today Show thing,
01:25which is not as in vogue.
01:27Would he be able to come back, like, and do,
01:29if no one will hire him, could he do, like,
01:30a Megyn Kelly thing or a Tucker Carlson thing?
01:33Probably not.
01:34That's not his brand.
01:35So I think the Matt Lauer comeback might just be
01:39in these annual stories saying maybe he's going to make a comeback.
01:42Right. So maybe it's coming from his camp,
01:45and he's hoping to have a little comeback.
01:46In the meantime, he's been hiding out in the Hamptons.
01:48He's been hiding out in the Hamptons,
01:50but don't feel too bad for him.
01:51I mean, sources had also told us that Lauer,
01:56he has more money than he needs.
01:58He has more money than he could ever spend.
02:00He doesn't need the money.
02:01He doesn't need the money for a comeback.
02:03So he's been, yeah, living his life out in the Hamptons.
02:05I mean, he's popped up once in a while at different events.
02:10He was at a wedding a couple years ago that a lot,
02:12that, like, you know, Savannah Guthrie was there
02:14and Don Lemon was there.
02:16Now, Don Lemon, oddly, has predicted
02:18that Matt Lauer could make a comeback.
02:20That's another thing, he doesn't,
02:21Matt Lauer doesn't have as many friends as he used to, right?
02:24Because, like, Katie Couric had even sort of slammed him
02:26in her book, Don Lemon has said he could make a comeback.
02:30But, yeah, I think he's going to remain
02:32in the Hamptons.
02:33Maybe he'll come back and do a local Hamptons TV gig.
02:38Yeah, right?
02:39Some local, maybe he'll be the local newscaster
02:41out in the Hamptons.
02:41Yeah, yeah, exactly.
02:42Reporting on the tides.
02:44Yeah, right, exactly.
02:45So this, yeah, in Montauk.
02:47But so the thing is that the story has been coming up,
02:50you know, every year.
02:51Expect the rumors keep going.
02:52I had even reported a few years back that he was at,
02:55I don't know if you've ever been there,
02:56but he was at Donahue's on Lexington Avenue,
02:58this kind of old-fashioned steakhouse pub and was overheard telling people,
03:03you know, that he was going to come back.
03:05So he might want to make a comeback.
03:07But people are also saying that, you know, the circumstances
03:11and the allegations against him, which he's denied.
03:13Of course, he was alleged by a former colleague to have raped her.
03:17He was accused by other female colleagues of sexual harassment.
03:23You know, he never was arrested.
03:25No charges were pressed.
03:26But he's denied that.
03:28He apologized.
03:29But people say it was just like it was too much for him to make a comeback.
03:33Right.
03:33And his accuser, you know, reportedly got a $1 million payout from NBC.
03:38And, of course, the stories that came out around that time will never forget it.
03:41I mean, the button under the desk, that self-lock the door of his office,
03:46and all these kind of crazy things were swirling around.
03:48I mean, the damage was done.
03:49And I don't know if you watched The Morning Show on Apple TV,
03:53but season one dramatized or fictionalized the whole Matt Lauer,
03:58you know, sexual misconduct storyline.
04:00Right, right, yeah.
04:01With Steve Carell.
04:02Right.
04:02Well, the thing is, so, right, there are other,
04:05there are also, I should say, other anchors.
04:08You know, like Chris Cuomo had been involved in some scandals, lesser scandals.
04:14Yeah, ethics scandals involving his brother.
04:15Yeah, involving his brother.
04:17And, you know, he made a comeback and went over to News Nation.
04:21But, yeah, our sources are saying that within the industry,
04:24there's not really an appetite.
04:26There's not really a place for Matt to come back.
04:28I'm sure Sirius XM would welcome him with arms wide open.
04:32No comment.
04:33All right, great.
04:34For more on this story, of course, head to Page6.com,
04:37and also check out Page6 in the actual paper.
04:41Yeah, go to your local newsstand.
04:43It's hot off the presses.
04:44Thanks, Ian.
04:46Thanks, Ian.
04:47Thanks to us,製io.
04:48Thank you Penguin.
