European Commission hits Elon Musk’s social network X with €120 million fine

The European Commission targeted the tech billionaire’s social network with its first-ever fine under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The account tick marks and advertising policy do not respect EU law, the Commission said.

00:00The European Commission imposed a 120 million euros fine on Elon Musk's Platform X on Friday,
00:07the first penalty under the Digital Services Act.
00:11At the center of the probe was the blue checkmark, which previously signaled official accounts,
00:16but is now sold for 7 euros a month, confusing users on account authenticity.
00:21X, previously known as Twitter, also failed to meet transparency obligations for advertising,
00:27lacking an updated register that could expose users to election-related scams.
00:33The Commission criticized X for not providing researchers with data on views and likes as required.
00:39The fine breaks down to 45 million euros for checkmarks, 40 million euros for researcher data, and 35 million euros for ads.
00:47The fine is well below the maximum 6% of global turnover, unlike previous larger fines on Apple and Meta.
00:54Two other probes into illegal content and algorithms are ongoing.
