00:00Once found along the Murray-Darling Basin but now locally extinct due to habitat loss,
00:07the olive perchlet returns to South Australian waters for the first time since 1983.
00:13To be able to bring back a species that has actually been extinct in South Australia for over 40 years is such a huge achievement.
00:21It's not known if breeding threatened fish by a golf green has been done before,
00:26but at the Glenelg Golf Club southwest of Adelaide this man-made wetland is teeming with wildlife.
00:32It's a place for these tiny transparent fish to hopefully multiply from 500 to 10,000 by early next year.
00:40So we hope to be able to then reintroduce them into other wetlands and maybe even back into the wild one day.
00:45Golf courses like this one act like a sanctuary.
00:48They've got permanent bodies of water and offer protection from introduced predators,
00:53giving species like the olive perchlet a chance to recover.
00:57That golf courses have more to play than just hitting a golf ball around or live golf or that sort of thing.
01:04We have actually a vital role to play within suburbia.
01:08Recent research found 37% of Australian native freshwater fish are at risk of extinction,
01:15a threat made worse by climate change.
01:17While drought conditions empty dams, these wetlands don't dry out.
01:22I think the golf club could be a really great part of fish conservation for South Australia.
01:26And, you know, since we've done this in South Australia,
01:29we're also looking at it in other states as well.
