In this Wednesday Night Live on 3 December 2025, philosopher Stefan Molyneux delves into the Mouse Utopia Experiment, or Universe 25, conducted by John B. Calhoun, exploring its implications on societal behaviors and psychological breakdowns. We examine the setup and outcomes of this study, where unlimited resources led to self-destructive behaviors among a mouse population. The discussion highlights the relationship between environment and mental health, urging caution in making direct comparisons to human society. We address the criticisms of Calhoun's methodology, the ethical concerns of using animals in experiments, and the relevance of these findings to contemporary issues like urban overcrowding and social isolation. The conversation encourages listeners to reflect on the necessity of promoting human excellence and combating isolation within our communities to avoid the pitfalls illustrated by the experiment.

00:53All right. The mouse utopia experiment.
00:55We have talked.
00:59Well, we've heard about this a lot.
01:01We've talked about it a little bit, and we're going to dig into it
01:03so that you can understand what it means philosophically and what it's all about.
01:09The mouse utopia experiment lessons from a coercive rodent world.
01:15Who expected me to say that today?
01:17Well, so we're going to discuss the mouse utopia experiment,
01:19also known as Universe 25.
01:21We'll cover the experiment's basics, its creator, its goal, his goals,
01:26whether it's been replicated, criticisms, funding, and how it ties,
01:29or doesn't tie into sort of human society as a whole.
01:32First thing, of course, to understand, there was no natural mouse habitat.
01:36It was an artificial forced confinement that studied how rodents react under coercion,
01:41not just their natural in-the-wild innate behaviors.
01:45So it's sort of like taking people and putting them in prison or a zoo or under some oppressive government
01:51rather than in the wild.
01:54So John B. Calhoun, do not.
01:59I refuse to have you confuse him with John C. Calhoun, who was like the beta,
02:04the 18th, 19th century statesman from South Carolina.
02:09So he was born in 19...
02:11Okay, John B.
02:12Born in 1917 in Tennessee.
02:14Calhoun was an American scientist who specialized in ethology,
02:17the study of animal behavior in natural or controlled settings.
02:21He earned degrees in biology, went on to work for the U.S. government,
02:24particularly at the National Institute of Mental Health, NIMHA,
02:28the secret of NIMHA, from the 1950s onwards.
02:31There he focused on how population density,
02:33obviously the number of individuals crammed into a limited space,
02:36affects social interactions and mental health in animals.
02:40It doesn't appear that Calhoun was much of an activist,
02:43but his work was used by Senator Robert Packwood,
02:46that's a great porn name,
02:47to advocate in 1971, to advocate for government action on population growth.
02:52Calhoun's work is also associated with works such as Paul Ehrlich,
02:56Paul Ehrlich's The Population Bomb 1968,
03:00where he predicted that hundreds of millions of people
03:01would starve to death in the 1970s.
03:04Of course, his predictions did not come true.
03:06Now, for those of you who weren't around in the 70s,
03:09boy, weren't you lucky.
03:10It was a hellscape of a key party,
03:14environmental terror, nuclear bombs, and terrorism kind of decade.
03:19It was hell on wheels.
03:22And if you are not that old,
03:25then the absolutely sinister pivot from,
03:27there are too many people in the world,
03:29there are too many people in your country,
03:31to, there aren't enough people in your country,
03:33we need to import everyone from the whole planet
03:35just to prop up your economy,
03:37is about as sinister a thing as I've ever seen in my lifetime.
03:40Telling people, don't have kids, there's too many people.
03:43Ooh, sorry, you didn't have enough kids.
03:45We need to import everyone from Somalia.
03:47That is not the most rational or moral pivot in the known universe.
03:58So as far as Calhoun's political leanings, we don't really know.
04:00He did coin the term Rx revolutionist
04:03to describe himself meaning revolutionary evolutionist
04:07using the Rx symbol
04:09to indicate he was seeking to prescribe solutions
04:12to societal issues via better design and technology.
04:16So if you're using the term revolutionary to describe yourself,
04:19could be a smidge of a tell.
04:20It's of course associated with various violent communist coups and so on.
04:24The love-olution.
04:27So Calhoun's work was mostly funded by the US government,
04:30i.e. the taxpayers,
04:33under threat of force through NIM
04:35as part of the National Institute of Health.
04:38As a federal employee from the 1954 onwards,
04:40his salary and lab resources came from taxpayer dollars
04:43via annual budgets.
04:44He did apply for and receive specific grants.
04:47For example, early outdoor experiments in the 1940s
04:50were self-funded or low budget.
04:52But by the 1960s, NIH grants supported his rodent universes.
04:57Given that the majority of his career
04:58was in government-funded academia,
05:00he was not subject to market forces
05:01that would have informed him
05:02of the necessity and utility of his work.
05:04So why do you hear of him?
05:06Because there was a radical Western,
05:10largely white depopulation agenda
05:12that was going on from the 1960s onwards
05:14because all of the communists,
05:16to whom white Christian males in particular
05:19are their natural antagonists or enemies,
05:21the communists were absolutely horrified
05:24by the baby boom of the post-Second World War period
05:27where you had birth rates of 3, 4, 5 per family.
05:31It was absolutely horrifying to them.
05:33Their enemies were breeding,
05:35and therefore they had to freak people out
05:37by talking about overpopulation
05:38until the women's legs froze shut
05:42like a pair of rusty scissors you find
05:44in a tool shed from 1920.
05:46So that's the larger thing.
05:48So nothing's accidental, right,
05:50in this kind of propagandistic universe.
05:52So why have you even heard about these things?
05:54Because too many people leads to societal collapse.
05:57So stop having babies.
05:58Oh, not enough people.
06:00Okay.
06:01So the mouse utopia refers to a series of experiments
06:04that Calhoun ran from the 1940s to the 1970s.
06:08But the most famous was Universe 25,
06:10conducted from 68 through 73.
06:13When I was two through seven.
06:17That's very important.
06:19You know, that's how we should measure things.
06:21So the setup was this.
06:23Calhoun built a large enclosure,
06:24about nine feet square and 4.5 feet tall,
06:28divided into 16 pens connected by ramps and tunnels.
06:31It was designed to house up to 3,840 miles comfortably,
06:35but the key to this whole enclosure
06:37was unlimited resources,
06:39which was endless food from feeders,
06:41constant water from drinking fountains,
06:42nesting materials everywhere,
06:44and no predators or diseases.
06:45The temperature was kept ideal
06:47at around 68 degrees Fahrenheit
06:49with clean air and bedding.
06:53So Calhoun started with four pairs
06:54of healthy young mice
06:55and let them breed freely.
06:58In this particular iteration
06:59of a whole series of experiments,
07:01the population grew rapidly.
07:02At first, it doubled every 55 days or so,
07:06peaking at around 2,200 mice by day 560.
07:11It's worth noting that mice experience estropores,
07:13the cessation of female fertility
07:16around 560 days might just be a coincidence,
07:19but then things went wrong.
07:21I've got a bad feeling about the mice, Jim.
07:25Social order broke down.
07:26Dominant males fought viciously over territory.
07:28Females became aggressive toward their young
07:30and many mice withdrew into isolation.
07:33Infants were abandoned or attacked.
07:34Breeding stopped and the population plummeted to zero.
07:37By day 1,584 total extinction,
07:42even though resources remained plentiful.
07:45This collapse was what Calhoun called
07:47a behavioral sink,
07:49a term for when overcrowding leads to
07:51abnormal self-destructive behaviors
07:52that drag the whole group down,
07:54like water swirling into a drain.
07:57So for a visual, we've got an image here.
07:59So here's the image of Universe 25 setup
08:02showing Calhoun inside the enclosure.
08:04There he is, our RX revolutionary,
08:09creating propaganda for anti-European population growth.
08:14So to track the rise and fall,
08:16here's a population graph from the experiment.
08:18Days after colonization, 500,000, 1500,
08:22and the fall down,
08:25the last born 1st, March 1970.
08:28So of course, it's artificial, right?
08:30These mice were forcefully confined
08:32in a metal box with no escape.
08:34They didn't face any natural challenges.
08:36So this wasn't studying the nature of mice,
08:38how they behave in forests or fields,
08:39but how they respond to coercion,
08:41like being trapped in a cage.
08:43Calhoun himself noted,
08:45the enclosures limits mimics.
08:46Human cities are institutions
08:47where people are boxed in by rules of force.
08:49So that's really jamming
08:51a whole bunch of stuff together.
08:52This is like Desmond Morris'
08:53The Human Zoo.
08:54That was a big book in the 70s as well.
08:56The Naked Ape and The Human Zoo.
08:57A human city is not like
09:01a totalitarian concentration camp mouse prison
09:07because you can come and go,
09:08you can live in the city,
09:09you can live out on the outskirts of the city,
09:11so that's not the way it is.
09:13It's actually closer to something like a prison
09:15or a government school
09:17or perhaps even Calhoun's own
09:19trapped-by-government money career.
09:23So what was he trying to establish?
09:24He aimed to show that overcrowding alone,
09:27even in this utopia with no shortages,
09:30could cause social and psychological breakdowns.
09:32He believed population density
09:34triggered pathologies like violence,
09:36apathy, and reproductive failure.
09:38His early rat experiments in the 1940s,
09:40located in outdoor pens behind his house,
09:42showed similar patterns,
09:44but Universe 25 was his most refined test.
09:47He hoped to warn humans about urban overcrowding,
09:49suggesting we needed better conceptual space,
09:52mental room for roles and creativity
09:53to avoid similar fates.
09:55In essence, he was testing
09:56if too many bodies in one place
09:58erode normal behaviors,
09:59leading to societal collapse.
10:01A big, big problem, of course,
10:02is the largely peaceful century
10:05between the fall of Napoleon in 1815
10:08and the start of the First World War in 1914.
10:11Well, there was a huge amount of overcrowding
10:13in the Industrial Revolution,
10:14but it did not lead to this kind of pathology.
10:17So, anyway.
10:18So, were his observations replicated?
10:20Well, not much and not extensively.
10:23That's kind of a key weakness.
10:25Calhoun ran over a hundred similar setups himself
10:28with varying results.
10:29Some populations stabilized,
10:31others collapsed faster due to factors
10:32like disease or design tweaks.
10:34But independent replication
10:36by other researchers are scarce.
10:39One partial echo was the 1966,
10:42also known as Year Zero,
10:43study by Kessler,
10:45where two mass groups showed differences,
10:46but it didn't fully match Calhoun's scale or findings.
10:50Modern scientists haven't revisited this setup much,
10:53partly due to ethical concerns,
10:54particularly around intentionally harming animals
10:56and doubts about its relevance.
10:58Without robust replications,
11:00his observations remain intriguing,
11:02but unconfirmed anecdotes,
11:03not solid science.
11:05So, he ran over a hundred setups.
11:07This is the one that was most famous
11:08because it had a big peak
11:10and then led to complete collapse,
11:12which gives people goosebumps of doom and disaster,
11:14which is quite a heady drug for a lot of people.
11:20So, what are the criticisms?
11:21Well, there's been a lot of pushback
11:23on the mouse utopia experiment.
11:26Methodological flaws,
11:27the enclosures were artificial and coercive,
11:29forcing unnatural proximity.
11:31So, mice, of course, are territorial by nature.
11:34Males fight intruders,
11:35so cramming them together predictably sparked chaos,
11:37not just because of density,
11:39but because of poor design.
11:42Critics noted Calhoun ignored variables
11:43like inbreeding and the lack of stimulation.
11:47There were no wheels, no toys,
11:49or varied environments
11:49leading to boredom-induced madness.
11:52And, of course, the inbreeding would increase
11:53behavioral and physical issues.
11:58I mean, ethically, it was pretty ugly.
12:00The setups caused suffering
12:02with cannibalism, infanticide, and self-mutilation.
12:05I mean, if you tried that today,
12:06animal welfare rules would block such studies.
12:08You know, mice aren't great for human standards.
12:13I mean, people like them
12:15because they have, I mean,
12:16obviously they're mammals
12:16with a high turnover rate of breeding.
12:19Their social dynamics differ wildly.
12:21Over-interpretation is common.
12:23Calhoun's dramatic language
12:24fueled doomsday myths,
12:25but data shows various variants
12:27across his own trials,
12:28suggesting the results weren't inevitable.
12:30Finally, some argue he projected human fears
12:32onto rodents,
12:33seeing utopia,
12:35where it really was a dystopian prison.
12:36I mean, it's UBI,
12:40but you've got to stay
12:40in the apartment building, right?
12:44So, which conclusions are applicable to humans
12:46and which are not?
12:47Calhoun intended his findings to apply to humans.
12:50Warning of urban behavioral sinks
12:51like rising violence
12:52or isolation in crowded cities.
12:55Some parts ring true.
12:56High-density and coercive settings
12:58like prisons or slums
13:00can amplify stress, aggression,
13:02and mental health issues,
13:03but most aren't directly applicable.
13:04Humans have culture,
13:05we have technology,
13:06we have choice,
13:07we build cities,
13:08emigrate, innovate,
13:09negotiate out of problems.
13:11Mice don't, obviously.
13:13Invalid parts include
13:14the extinction prediction.
13:16Human populations aren't collapsing
13:17in this way.
13:19Calhoun's behavioral sink theory
13:20hasn't produced
13:21empirically testable outcomes in people.
13:23No large-scale human studies
13:24mimic it ethically.
13:26Per our guidelines,
13:28without tests yielding results,
13:30these conclusions must be judged
13:31invalid as science,
13:33more like speculative analogies.
13:34They were meant as prophecies,
13:35but lack proof.
13:38So, how do mice and humans
13:39compare in their social hierarchies?
13:41Well, mice form small groups
13:43centered on one dominant male
13:44who defends a territory
13:47with scent marks and aggression.
13:49This is sort of like
13:50my marriage with my wife,
13:52but if you ever meet her,
13:56you don't,
13:57I mean, you don't really have to
13:59talk to her about
14:00how dominant I am.
14:01Don't, you know,
14:02it's obviously very difficult for her.
14:04You don't have to bring it up with her.
14:06I mean, otherwise,
14:06she might just laugh historically.
14:09So, you've got a dominant male
14:11paired with several females
14:13and they're young.
14:13Females cooperate in raising babies
14:15like shared nursing
14:16and are less competitive.
14:17Males fight fiercely for mates,
14:19creating a clear pecking order.
14:21In the wild,
14:22groups are similar
14:23and more spread out
14:24due to varying resources,
14:25leading to higher aggression
14:26and exploration.
14:28Young males often
14:29disperse to new areas.
14:31Labs provide constant food
14:33and safety,
14:33allowing denser groups
14:34with quicker forming
14:35but sometimes unstable hierarchies.
14:38Lab mice from selected breeding
14:39are tamer
14:40and less bold than wild ones
14:41with bigger changes
14:42in female behavior.
14:44Humans, of course,
14:45create layered social orders
14:46shaped by culture,
14:47rules, and institutions
14:47from families
14:48with defined roles
14:49to large systems
14:50like governments or economies.
14:52Hierarchies divide people
14:53by wealth, power, or status
14:55like a pyramid
14:55with leaders at the top.
14:58They blend competition
14:59and teamwork
14:59can be formal
15:00as in job ladders
15:01or informal
15:02as in social influence
15:04and change over time
15:04through ideas, laws,
15:05or technology.
15:08We can negotiate, they can't.
15:10We can specialize, they can't.
15:12Comparison and contrast.
15:13So both species
15:14use structures
15:14to organize groups,
15:16reduce fights
15:16and aid survival,
15:17higher status brings
15:18better resources,
15:19and crowding
15:19tightens hierarchies.
15:21Males compete more
15:23in both,
15:24though humans
15:24add cultural twists.
15:26The major differences
15:27are that mice
15:28are instinct-driven,
15:30simple, and physical,
15:31focused on small families.
15:33Labs amplify control.
15:35The wild adds adaptability.
15:37Humans are complex,
15:38cultural, unscalable,
15:39using cooperation norms
15:41and innovation
15:41to handle challenges
15:42like density,
15:43unlike mice's breakdown
15:44in experiments.
15:46So people often link
15:48this sort of mass utopia
15:49to modern issues,
15:50but of course,
15:51remember,
15:51the experiment's core
15:52was coercion,
15:54forced confinement
15:54breeding unnatural behaviors.
15:57In humans,
15:57equivalents involve
15:58violence or force
15:59like abusive parenting
16:00or government mandates
16:01disrupting natural choices.
16:03Here's an outline
16:04in a table for clarity.
16:06Ooh,
16:07that's a,
16:08let's see if I can
16:08zoom in on that
16:09a wee smidge.
16:10Yeah, probably.
16:11Can we?
16:13Ooh.
16:14Let's see.
16:15No, not really.
16:16Okay, it's about the same.
16:18All right.
16:18So the human phenomenon
16:19declining birth rates
16:20in developed countries.
16:22Low fertility
16:22in wealthy nations
16:23such as Japan and Europe
16:24despite abundance.
16:26So the comparison
16:27to the mass utopia,
16:29like mice stopping
16:30breeding amid chaos,
16:31the beautiful ones
16:32withdrew from mating.
16:33These are the male mice
16:34usually that would withdraw
16:36from mating
16:37and just groom themselves
16:38endlessly and so on.
16:40So birth rate decline
16:41among humans is complex.
16:43Birth rates have declined
16:44worldwide,
16:45though much more so
16:46in high IQ populations
16:47where they've fallen
16:48below replacement rates.
16:50Common to many,
16:50if not most,
16:51of the factors
16:51contributing to birth rate
16:53decline is coercion.
16:55Just to name a few,
16:56employers are forced
16:56to hire women
16:57through policies
16:58that enforce
16:59equality of outcomes.
17:00Governments run
17:01up massive national debts
17:02and unfunded liabilities
17:03which destroy the currency
17:04and make it more difficult
17:05for young people to succeed.
17:07Governments create
17:08mass migration policies
17:09which hack off
17:09the bottom of the ladder
17:10for the native population
17:11to enter the job market.
17:13Government quote,
17:13education is anything
17:14but producing adults
17:15not fit for anything decent
17:16after having charge
17:18of children
17:18for 12 years or more.
17:20Intermixed with this
17:21is a constant stream
17:22of ever-shifting propaganda
17:23including condemnation
17:24for being white,
17:25the devaluation
17:26of family life,
17:27and media scare stories
17:27about the imminent destruction
17:29of all life on earth.
17:31Overcrowding is a relic
17:32of the mid-20th century
17:33scare stories
17:34on overpopulation
17:35which itself
17:36was a hold of
17:37from 19th century
17:38Malthusian doom says
17:40saying that humanity
17:41would continue increasing
17:42until collapse.
17:43So the Malthusian doctrine
17:45is that
17:46human beings
17:48increase
17:49exponentially,
17:51right,
17:51it's a curve that goes
17:52from horizontal
17:53to almost vertical
17:53whereas food production
17:55increases
17:56in a linear fashion,
17:58right,
17:58x plus one.
18:00So
18:01because
18:02you can't get
18:04food production
18:05to increase
18:06at the rate
18:06of human population,
18:07starvation
18:08is always inevitable.
18:09It is not proven
18:10to be the case
18:11of course
18:11as we know.
18:14So
18:14human
18:14phenomenon,
18:17social isolation
18:18and
18:18hikimori,
18:19hikimori,
18:20hikimori,
18:21hikimori,
18:21I'm not sure
18:22how to pronounce that.
18:23People withdrawing
18:24from society
18:24like Japan's
18:25shut-ins
18:25or the
18:26global loneliness
18:28epidemics.
18:29This mirrors
18:30the beautiful ones
18:30groomed but asocial
18:31mice avoiding contact.
18:33Social isolation
18:34is also complex
18:35and has its roots
18:36in many of the same
18:36elements as
18:37declining birth rates.
18:38The increase
18:39of daycare
18:39and the fracturing
18:40of high-trust societies
18:41through mass migration
18:42serve to increase
18:43this isolation
18:44as well.
18:46So the human
18:46phenomenon is
18:47urban violence
18:48and gang culture
18:48and of course
18:49this is rising crime
18:50in dense cities.
18:51This echoes
18:52the aggressive
18:52behavioral sync
18:53fights over space
18:54in the mouse utopia
18:55but the mouse
18:58were homogenous
18:58and again confined.
19:00Urban violence
19:00and gang culture
19:01is not an effect
19:01of overcrowding
19:02but of the removal
19:03of incentives
19:03against it.
19:04Welfare,
19:05mass migration
19:05and reduced reinforcement
19:07sorry,
19:07reduced enforcement
19:08of existing law
19:09all contribute
19:10to rising crime.
19:11Crime correlates
19:12with IQ
19:12not with poverty
19:14and the sweet spot
19:15is around IQ 85.
19:17The human phenomenon
19:18is welfare state
19:19dependency.
19:20People on long-term
19:21aid losing motivation
19:22leading to family
19:23breakdown.
19:24In the mouse utopia
19:25it's similar to mice
19:26with unlimited food
19:27but no purpose
19:28breeding and leading
19:29to breeding apathy.
19:31So on welfare
19:31of course children
19:32are converted
19:32from liabilities
19:33into assets.
19:35This leads to
19:35wildly distorted
19:36incentives where women
19:37can get money
19:39more money
19:40from the government
19:40for having children
19:41and are disincentivized
19:42to having and keeping
19:44a man in the house.
19:44Again we come back
19:45to coercion
19:45as the common threat.
19:47So in this situation
19:51the mouse utopia
19:51is not society
19:53it's not cities
19:54it is when
19:56the government
19:58provides the resources
20:00like literally
20:01in the mouse utopia
20:02because he was getting
20:02his funding
20:03from the government
20:03the government
20:04was directly providing
20:06the resources
20:06not just to Calhoun
20:07but government money
20:08was being used
20:09to buy the enclosures
20:11it was being used
20:11to buy the food
20:12and the water
20:13and all of that.
20:14So when the government
20:15provides resources
20:17rather than
20:18the family
20:21then you get
20:22just this kinds
20:22of mess
20:23and chaos.
20:25So theories
20:26on human behavior
20:26developed
20:27and were they tested?
20:29What were the results?
20:30So from mouse utopia
20:32as I mentioned
20:32Calhoun developed
20:33the behavioral sync
20:34theory
20:35overcrowding
20:36in limited spaces
20:37causes role
20:38last leading
20:39to deviance
20:40and collapse
20:40he extended
20:41to humans
20:41proposing
20:42a compassionate
20:44revolution
20:45or redesigning
20:46cities
20:46for more mental space
20:47were these tested?
20:49A little bit
20:50a little bit
20:50I mean no ethical
20:51human equivalence
20:52exists
20:52we can't confine
20:53people
20:53like mice
20:55and of course
20:55where we do
20:56confine people
20:57in prisons
20:57reproduction
20:58is not an issue
20:59some urban studies
21:01the 1970s
21:02housing project
21:03showed density
21:05correlating
21:05with crime
21:06but causation
21:06is fairly unclear
21:07poverty or design
21:09flaws
21:09mattered more
21:10results
21:11kind of inconclusive
21:12high rises
21:13sometimes
21:14bred isolation
21:15those are the
21:16very tall
21:17apartment buildings
21:18the kind of stuff
21:19well actually
21:19I didn't grow up
21:20in super tall ones
21:21I think the tallest
21:21I lived in
21:22was about
21:2212 or 13 stories
21:24but high rises
21:26sometimes bred
21:27isolation
21:27but interventions
21:28like green space
21:29has fixed it
21:29unlike mouse extinction
21:30without rigorous tests
21:32yielding clear outcomes
21:33the theories are
21:34invalid
21:34as empirical science
21:35may be speculative
21:36tools
21:37but not proven
21:37so
21:40we have to talk about
21:41how it doesn't scale
21:42to human beings
21:43major differences
21:44between humans
21:45and mice
21:45or rats
21:47so
21:48even these obvious
21:49differences matter
21:50as they do undermine
21:51direct comparison
21:52mice typically live
21:53three to six months
21:54in the wild
21:55in captivity
21:56they can live
21:56up to three years
21:57rarely living
21:58to post fertility
21:58much less beyond it
21:59they are of course
22:01a prey species
22:02humans live
22:0370 to 80 years
22:04or more
22:04decades beyond
22:05reproductive windows
22:06there's also no
22:06comparison to
22:07intergenerational care
22:08between humans
22:08and mice
22:09reproduction
22:10mice reach
22:11sexual maturity
22:12at six to eight weeks
22:13can produce
22:13litters of six to eight
22:14pups every
22:15three weeks
22:16really they're
22:17just blind photocopiers
22:18humans reach
22:19sexual maturity
22:20in the early to mid teens
22:21although nowadays
22:23do not typically
22:24have children
22:25until their 20s
22:26and typically
22:26have only one
22:27child at a time
22:28a single mouse
22:29of course
22:29can have dozens
22:30of offspring
22:30though with a high
22:31mortality rate
22:32while humans
22:32have an average
22:33of 3.3 children
22:34in the mid 20th century
22:35in the first world
22:36with an average
22:36of 1.5 now
22:37of course
22:39mice are prey species
22:40always vigilant
22:40fleeing threats
22:41humans are apex predators
22:42shaping environments
22:43aggressively
22:44this flips
22:44behaviors
22:45mice huddle in fear
22:46humans conquer space
22:47intelligence
22:49and adaptation
22:50humans have
22:52high iq variability
22:53low iq strongly
22:54correlates with crime
22:55whereas high iq
22:56enables complex
22:57societies
22:57mice lack culture
22:59tools or language
23:00there are no laws
23:00therapy or innovation
23:01to fix
23:02these sort of sinks
23:03and i don't know
23:05that there are genius
23:06mice compared to
23:07not genius mice
23:07but there certainly
23:08are with humans
23:09mice are polygamous
23:11and territorial
23:11humans form
23:12monogamous
23:12pair bonding
23:13families and governments
23:14we migrate
23:15or innovate
23:15the mice of course
23:16were trapped
23:17in this hellscape
23:18response to coercion
23:20of course
23:20both humans
23:21and mice
23:21suffer under force
23:22but humans
23:23rebel or reform
23:24even to the point
23:24of revolutions
23:25against tyranny
23:25while mice
23:26just deteriorate
23:27right
23:27the mice
23:27couldn't exactly
23:28gang up
23:28and free
23:29themselves from
23:30Dr. Calhoun
23:32so in some
23:33mass utopia
23:34spotlights
23:35coercion's harms
23:36artificial environments
23:37breeding unnatural
23:37woes
23:38for humans
23:38it's a caution
23:39against forceful
23:41policies
23:41not a doom
23:42prophecy
23:42it doesn't have
23:43anything to do
23:43with human nature
23:44it only has to do
23:46with the problem
23:47of getting
23:48your resources
23:49from the state
23:50rather than
23:51from individuals
23:52so I hope
23:54that makes
23:55some kind
23:56of decent
23:56skints
23:57and if you
23:58want to get
23:58back to your
23:59comments
24:00and questions
24:01I would love
24:03to hear them
24:03what do we got
24:04here
24:05how much
24:07of our
24:07current society
24:08in the west
24:09would you
24:09say
24:11are the
24:13beautiful ones
24:14I consider a lot
24:14of the left
24:15to be caught
24:15in this
24:15programmed
24:16to not
24:17reproduce
24:17has it
24:19the left
24:19see the left
24:19has a culture
24:20of ugliness
24:21the right
24:22wing
24:22young
24:23the sort
24:24of young
24:24right wing
24:25males
24:25in the gym
24:26culture
24:26the ab
24:27culture
24:27the you know
24:28the sort
24:29of narcissistic
24:30vanity
24:30selfie
24:31with the
24:31iPhone
24:32and the
24:32mirror
24:32culture
24:33that to me
24:34is a beautiful
24:34one
24:35and there's
24:35nothing wrong
24:35with having
24:36a nice
24:36physique
24:37there's
24:37nothing
24:38of course
24:38wrong
24:38with exercise
24:39I'm a big
24:39fan
24:40and praise
24:40exercise
24:41a lot
24:41but when
24:42exercise
24:43becomes
24:43about
24:44the vanity
24:45of how
24:45you look
24:46or sex
24:47appeal
24:47rather than
24:48trying to get
24:49a good person
24:50to make a family
24:51with
24:51that would be
24:52the beautiful
24:53ones
24:54the women
24:55it's always in
24:55cars
24:56they're just
24:56saying the
24:56most outlandish
24:57things
24:58with the
24:58most astonishing
24:59filters and
25:00makeup on
25:00and it is just
25:01a mating
25:02display
25:02called give me
25:03attention
25:04but is the
25:04attention
25:05because they
25:06want to have
25:06children
25:07right
25:07is sexual
25:07attention
25:08because people
25:08want to have
25:08children
25:09or just because
25:10they enjoy
25:10the attention
25:12attention
25:12without
25:13children
25:13is
25:14it's a
25:16crack
25:16it's a
25:17kind of
25:17heroin
25:17it's a
25:17kind of
25:18kind of
25:18drug
25:18so how
25:20much of our
25:20current society
25:21would I say
25:21are the
25:21beautiful ones
25:22the beautiful
25:23ones
25:23are not quite
25:24the same
25:25as the ones
25:25who are
25:25purely
25:26isolated
25:26but
25:28it's hard
25:31to say
25:31I mean
25:31I really
25:31it's hard
25:32to say
25:32because
25:33social media
25:34is not
25:35the real
25:35world
25:35but I
25:36would say
25:36probably
25:36at least
25:37at least
25:3710%
25:38oh yes
25:40Ehrlich
25:41Ehrlich
25:42it's such a
25:43Randian
25:43villain name
25:44Ehrlich
25:44also made
25:45a bet
25:45with Julian
25:45Simon
25:46about how
25:46resources
25:47would run
25:47out
25:47Simon
25:48figured out
25:48that resources
25:49are virtually
25:49infinite
25:50and just
25:51need human
25:51time to
25:52extract
25:52Simon
25:53was correct
25:53and commodities
25:54were relatively
25:54cheaper
25:55and more
25:55abundant
25:5510 and
25:5720 years
25:57after the
25:58bet
25:58with Ehrlich
25:58yeah
25:59yeah
26:01I remember
26:03I read
26:04a book
26:05called
26:05The Under
26:05Recover
26:05Economist
26:06which has
26:06a great
26:07analogy
26:07about
26:08the room
26:10full of
26:10peanuts
26:10the room
26:12full of
26:12peanuts
26:13so
26:14if you
26:15are put
26:15in a
26:16big room
26:16full of
26:16peanuts
26:17and they're
26:17all in
26:17the shell
26:18right
26:18peanuts
26:18all in
26:19the shell
26:19you'll
26:19never run
26:20out of
26:20peanuts
26:20because
26:21you'll
26:21eat the
26:22peanuts
26:22but then
26:23you'll
26:23throw away
26:23the shells
26:24let's say
26:24you can't
26:25get rid
26:25of the
26:25shells
26:25and
26:26eventually
26:27there'll
26:28still be
26:28shells
26:28there'll
26:29still be
26:29peanuts
26:29in there
26:30but
26:30they're
26:30just
26:30it's
26:30all
26:30shells
26:31and it's
26:31too
26:31hard
26:31it's
26:32too
26:32hard
26:32to
26:33find
26:33you'll
26:33have
26:34you ever
26:34have
26:34that
26:34where
26:35you're
26:35eating
26:35like
26:35some
26:37nuts
26:38and
26:38shells
26:38or
26:38whatever
26:39you're
26:39kind
26:39of
26:39opening
26:40them
26:40and
26:40then
26:40some
26:41of
26:41them
26:41are
26:41too
26:41hard
26:41to
26:41open
26:41and just
26:42kind of
26:42throw
26:42them back
26:42and you know
26:43that kind
26:43of thing
26:43so
26:44I remember
26:46when I was
26:46telling people
26:47about this
26:47that you know
26:49we can't run
26:49out of oil
26:50we can't run
26:52out of oil
26:52because at
26:54some point
26:55oil will just
26:55get too
26:56tough
26:56to get a
26:57hold of
26:58and of
26:58course
26:58there's
26:59I mean
26:59virtually an
27:00infinity of
27:00oil
27:01under the
27:01earth
27:02and
27:03one of the
27:04things that's
27:04happened of
27:05course is
27:05that as
27:06oil
27:06as the
27:07easy oil
27:07got more
27:08scarce
27:08the technology
27:09improved
27:09to get
27:11more oil
27:12that was
27:12harder to
27:13get at
27:13right
27:13so they
27:14used to
